A Columbia judge has granted the solicitor's office more time to prepare their case against a Fort Jackson sergeant charged in an incident in April that went viral making national headlines.
Jonathan Eugene Pentland, a Fort Jackson sergeant, is charged with assault and battery third degree. He appeared before a magistrate Friday morning in Columbia.
According to his defense attorney, Pentland has been kept away from his family and staying at a military hotel since the days after his arrest for the April 14 incident. He has been suspended by Fort Jackson.
A cell phone video showed a man, identified by Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott as Pentland, having a confrontation with a young man walking in the Summit neighborhood in Columbia near Pentland's home.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said Pentland can be heard yelling "walk away," "I'm about to do something to you," and "you're in the wrong neighborhood," to the victim. Lott said Pentland then shoved the victim. Lott said that's what led them to bring the evidence to the solicitor, who determined the charge.

Rather than assaulting the mentally ill man, call someone who will actually help the situation for everyone. Have him removed in one of these approved methods. 1>call the police and explain it to them. 2> call ems or some sort of mental crisis intervention group. They said that she was getting harassed and went into the street to get assistance. Deputies that attended were told the black man approached several neighbours in a threading manner. There were two other reports of the black man alleged to assault someone. They believe he has an underlying medical condition that explains the behaviour. It is alleged that the black man attempted to put his hand down the female pants. • In the video that went viral , "Mr Clean" just wanted to look cool. He even changed his voice to sound like a Drill Sergeant lol. And Barefoot to top it off! Lol...it was ALL FOR SHOW! so he could have a cool story to tell everyone after and to get the pat on his back that he so desperately wants. He is in the Military, so he knows the Protocol when it comes to things like this. And thats to call the cops and aid them in whatever they need. He said " NOW your talking to my wife", which shows the little guy never said anything to his wife until that moment. Little guy did nothing at the time and was just in a neighborhood that doesnt like certain people, Pretty obvious why. I don't care if the little guy did something wrong, Mr Clean didn't see anything therefor doesn't know anything either, except for the fact it was going to draw attention to a perfect opportunity for Mr Clean to get the Attention and Hero look he soooooo desperately needs. He is a Bully, a Tool, a Douch, you name it. He kept telling the guy half his size to walk away, maybe Mr Clean should have taken his own advice! ...pretty simple.
