Is the South racist? We asked South Carolinians | AJ+

AJ+ wanted to explore the stereotype that the South is more racist than the North. So we hit the road in South Carolina and asked. Why now? The Charleston church shooting and the recent focus on the Confederate flag have reignited age-old debates about racism in the U.S., particularly in the South.

    • There is racism everywhere. In NZ when l was a child I saw how different ethnic groups were treated, lslanders, Chinese Indians Italians Greeks Poles etc All the derogatory names and the jokes. My mother was half Greek but my name is Jones so no-one knew and l kept it to my self. I thought that if they knew l would would be treated that way too. I moved to Australia where Racism was much worse. Working in an underground gold mine in 1974 my leading hand would tell me about his adventures hunting Aboriginals for sport. Bragging about killing people for fun. Later l worked with one of the Rhodesian rat runners who told me tales of being a captain in the army reserve spending his weekends fighting their war, all his soldiers were black the officers white And he a very religious man he liked all those "good boys". So long as they did what they were told. But the very worst racist l have met was a Maori. He hated everyone. His favourite tale was how when the Maori came to NZ they drove the original inhabitants out of NZ and the remnants escaped to the Chatham islands. When the Whiteman came to NZ the Maori hired a ship to take them to a meeting, but they hijacked the ship put the crew ashore filled it up with warriors and went to the Chatham islands to exterminate the last of the original inhabitants. But the hatred he had for Samoans Tongans Chinese everyone else was extreme racism. Racists of every type are the worst of all people.

  • Anyone from any culture and race can be racist. I'm an American of Mexican ethnicity. When I was 9 years old I got my first taste of racism. In 1964 I won 1st place in the library's reading contest where I had to write an essay on each book I read. I got my picture taken for the newspaper, but only of my back, they had me facing the librarian behind me, while the two White boys, who won second and third places, faced the camera. When I was managing an apartment building a Black couple came to my office mad as hell. They let me know that they knew I was Mexican and knew that once one Mexican moves in a whole lot of Mexicans follow. We are like roaches the lady told me. Since I was the manager I had to take that abuse. Of course, if someone would have said that to the nice Black couple, they would have screamed racism and sued. I know both White, Black and Mexicans who are racist against others. I've known people from all those groups who were racist and prejudiced against White, Blacks, Jews, Asians, Mexicans, Indians, Middle Eastern and anyone not included in this list. And I know those who deny racism are the ones who practice racism and prejudice against others. Because admitting racism means you acknowledge the issue, that it's unfair, abusive and one will need to change their own attitude against people they only know and judge superficially and not soul deep.

    • Only North Africans , Middle Easterners, Turkish racism and Islamophobia could be justified for some geopolitical reasons and because of their Islamic practices. No other racisms could be justified and all must be punished. But I find islamophobia and Arabphobia is justified due to their racism, misogynistic tendancies and homophobia. I don’t think you can wear hijab , eat halal meat and be American citizen at the same time.

Not everyone has the power to be racist. America's military, government, police, policies, science, medicine, FDA, residential redlining, media and social engineering etc are ALL forms of maintaining yt dominion over other ethnic groups in American society and culture ESPECIALLY people of African descent and the very bloodlines of blood the country and it's economic and military power structures were conveniently built upon so naaaah everyone cannot be racist from any ethnic group. That's just not true. It sounds good but, it's not true.

Culture is a bigger factor in what kind of person you are. The inner city black subculture, is very flawed to say the least. But blacks who grow up in rural areas or suburbs might be a whole different kind of people. Color doesnt matter, but your beliefs & values that are partly formed by your culture does

And that is something that makes me proud to be Colombian.....The problem that people in the United States have with people's races is ridiculous...... I myself have had to be a victim of insults in the United States for "being a white privileged person" and be a victim of harassment for that... I really don't understand what happens to people in the United States.

    • Well, just know, if you truly want an answer that is, that there is a GIANT propaganda machine 🎥 📺 💥 🩸 at the highest level, run almost exclusively by the same ethnoreligious group that benefits by keeping us all fighting each other as they gain more and more control, and you will be labeled Racist if you simply call this out. The idea of people of different colors hating each other is NOT a natural phenomenon and it requires billions of dollars 💸 a year being poured into it to keep it from dying… and sadly it largely works on the majority of humans ☠️ The reason why it’s way more in America than Colombia (which I have been and have some awesome Colombians friends 😎), is because America is A LOT bigger threat than Colombia to being able to fight and resist this power that is trying to consume us all. The 1st and 2nd amendments are huge advantages to Americans which these basic human rights don’t exist in other countries. Hope you have the ears 👂🏼 👂🏼 to hear my 2 cents, cheers 🥂 🙏🏼 🥳

I moved to the Midwest and people are way more accepting of you regardless of background. I worked for a fortune 500 company back there and going back to you have to have a southern accent this is important and I was told this my whole life but did not believe it. I was interviewing for jobs and was getting completely different feedback from my interviews for the same management positions when I applied for the job in the midwest and northeast corner VS SC/GA/NC/FL (same job and same company) . I spent years not getting a promotion and eventually started interviewing out of the south and started getting feedback that made more sense in a couple of months! I knew only what I saw at the tv, in documentaries and movies: Confederates were traitors, they triggered the civil war because they wanted to continue slavery, there were naughty, uneducated... Then, I opened books of history... Having a confederate flag is not racist if you do it because you love the South and are sick of Washington DC and Hollywood vicious hate against this cultural region. It's racist if you're a southern morron having this flag because he hates black people and wants to make them unconfortable. These southern morrons see the South and its history in the same way Hollywood and DC do. In France, we call this kind of people "useful morrons", that is to say, people who are too stupid to realize their behavior actually benefit to their ennemies.
