Decay rate will spawn over-powered mobs of poachers in groups of 1 to 25, each with the dreaded human ranged attack, and sometimes even abilities like: helicopter, which makes them immune to all ground builds. Decay rate is usually really low, but in and around China, it can be as high as 50,000% of nominal. Brutal stuff. I don't know what the devs were thinking.

  • The fact that cheetahs actually evolved to look like honey badgers as cubs is pretty nuts and very sad when you think about it. It's not like there is an intelligence behind evolution and it actively tries to do such things. It's driven by natural selection and that means that from all the random possible colourations these cubs over many generations were the only ones that didn't get killed.

  • The problem with cheetahs is that they're a mid-tier build in a diamond-elite-tier server. They'd most likely see more success in less-competitive regions where their abilities could shine without having to bend to the meta at every turn. That's not to say they'd ever be a top-tier, but they definitely seem to be a victim of poor matchmaking algorithms.

    @Argonwolfproject@Argonwolfproject3 жыл бұрын
    • The only way I see them becoming viable in such a hard server is slowing down the speed and instead going for the same type of tree mobility Jaguars tigers and other cats have

      @thomasbrown2685@thomasbrown26853 жыл бұрын
    • You say that, but what other server could have possibly benefitted them enough to get them out of that low tier spot? Few places are as wide open as the African Savannah- only two I can think of is the North American Great Plains, and the Australian Outback. They might be alright in NA Great Plains, but considering the average size of the prey animals out there, they'd need a lot of kills to make up enough daily food- and the herd animals out there are used to coyotes and wolves, who're much better suited to the team play style and would definitely know how to stand their ground against a lone cheetah even on first contact. And AUS Outback, well, it's rocky and dry, and the best food source they'd really have access to would be small lizards and maybe the odd 'roo that got caught out of position. Their gameplay is just hard to put anywhere natural, and without a pretty serious rebuild, I wouldn't be surprised to see the player base completely die out, sad to say. They have little offense, no defense, poor team work and social skills, and their biggest strength- blistering speed- has hard counters common to most every mid to high tier build in the game.

  • Just a note that the part at 4:00 about cheetahs heating up because of the chase could be wrong according to a 2013 study which "recorded the average temperature of cheetahs after hunts to be 38.6 °C (101.5 °F), suggesting high temperatures need not cause hunts to be abandoned." It seems that the heating up could be a response to awareness of other predators in the area instead. The original 1973 study put cheetahs in captivity on a treadmill and had them attempt long-distance, medium-speed running, and observed that these cheetahs stopped running after overheating at 40.5 °C. However, overheating during an actual short-distance, high-speed chase hasn't been observed for cheetahs in the wild. Nevertheless, the observations from the 1973 study have become so ingrained in popular culture and in documentaries that they prevail to this day.

  • A little note on the cheetah team strats, it's been found in this age of desperation that teams of cheetahs are starting to grow considerably. Cheetahs have been recently seen trying to coordinate attacks against prey as large as giraffes with teams of 5 or even 6 cats, so this does give some hope to the graceful speed demon. Large prides could essentially negate all the drawbacks of playing a cheetah (low defense, low attack, killstealing hyenas, etc.) and be the saving grace for the build. Here's hoping they see the strategy's benefits and actually pull it off, I'd hate to see the build get banned.

Pack mentality is much less ingrained in their species than in canines. "Wolves' real superiority comes from their lack of competition in their environment" Hard disagree. Animals that share the same niche and the same hunting strategy as wolves (hyenas) are perfectly fine in Africa. They even share the same adaptation of cracking bones to get at the marrow.

    • @@nick-playercharacter8583 " Imagine if cheetahs became a support class for humans the way wolves did early in the meta. Oh, how things would've changed." That's not only possible, but logical. Cheetas are famously easy to domesticate, and make about as good companions as wolves (as in, non-domestic dogs). They's probably fill a similar niche to birds of prey used by steppe people, due to their insane speed, and need for help to maintain control over the carcass. Now that I think about it, the total domestication of cheetas would probably be very easy.

I live in Iowa, and the tallgrass prairie has been almost entirely lost in the last few hundred years. • Hot take: cheetahs are specialized for a match up spread that no longer exists in the African server. It's not necessarily their fault that the genetic diversity is so low, either. Humans nearly wiped out their playerbase.

    @hobosorcerer@hobosorcerer3 жыл бұрын
    • Like Pandas and koalas, it's just further proof that specialist builds are terrible. Int builds will always hard counter a build going for an extremely specific playstyle, you're just too predictable and too reliant on resources staying the same market value. Generalist builds the way to go: Just look at house cats. They can reasonably rely on group XP as a support build, but have enough of their talents remain in tact that they can survive solo too, and because they put a few points in Neoteny, they can even trick humans into saving their ass and giving them free boosts if the wilderness is proving too dangerous Dogs made a similar case over in Australia: they hung around for the group xp, and then disbanded the group and dominated a totally unprepared playerbase. They somehow evolved from a support build to apex predator _in australia_

    • I live in the African server. And you're absolutely wrong. Impallas and gazelles, their preferred prey are roaming everywhere. Cheetahs prefer antelopes, problem with cheetahs is not humans, but diseases and high spawn death ratio at the hands of lions and hyenas. There is some human conflict of course, but not to an extent lions, wild dogs or leopards face.

      @jomo2483@jomo24833 жыл бұрын
    • Humans fucked up every single meta in the game when they come about. It's likely the currently fractured matchup spread and the sheer quantity of low tiers is simply because they relied on a strategy that is no longer viable thanks to Humans.

  • in spite of their distinct defense gameplay weakness. I would still put the Cheetah on D tier as its definitely a cut above stuff like the majority of Frog builds who get spawn killed so hard only a tiny percentage of them can survive the tadpole stage and can get one shot by builds far below their own weight class even without serious venom or poison traits. Cheetahs also still remain somewhat viable on Africa which has the aforementioned S tiers like Lions and hyenas. Cheetahs right now I think would do well to spec into better team strats and perhaps form permanent groups like most other S tier predator builds in Africa to better defend their kills and cubs. though they still wouldn't stand much of a chance against top tier herbivore players they could more reliably hunt down builds like Zebra and Ostrich. and lone predators would certainly think twice about taking on 3 or more Cheetahs just for the relatively smaller game they hunt. They may also want to consider having at least one of their front claws retractable so they can deal some damage with paw swipe based moves or spend time sharpening their paws whenever they can. A few other minor changes that might bring their top speed down just a little bit but increase power or defense without sacrificing their core identity of being the speed champions on land should also be considered.
