I think the devs did a good job with claws. They didn't nerf them to the ground when they saw the velociraptor's claws but made them shorter and more useful after the cretaceous expansion.
*Cretaceous
@@kadabraguy9846 ?
Raptor dinosaurs first made their appearance in the triassic period. Their claws remained relevant throughout the age of dinosaurs. Real velociraptors aren't in the "Jurassic Park" movies. They used the physical characteristics of Deinonychus instead because it is more physically intimidating. Do you remember the scene in the first movie where Grant had excavated a raptor skeleton? It's not where Velociraptors are discovered.

One big misconception about claws is that they don’t actually deal slashing damage, but, more accurately, tearing damage. They don’t have actual blades, only points. True slashing is all but exclusive to human weapons and tools.
That's what I was wondering about recently. I was building a D&D (technically Pathfinder but D&D is more universally understood) character in game who would wield a dragon claw as a weapon and I was unsure what type of damage to attribute to it, whether it would be slashing or piercing. Sadly there wasn't anything about that in the rule book item and there isn't any comparable build in current servers ever since the dinosaur nerf.
@@Buphido I'd assume that if it's a dragon claw with a handle stuck to it, there might also be the option of sharpening it and giving it a cutting edge. Dragon claw spears are much more clear-cut in that regard.
@@Buphido Dinosaurs didn't have slashing claws either. The point of claws is to pierce stuff, hence why they are hook shaped. But dragons are fantasy creatures so it's up to you.
Oysters are the closest animal I can think of to having actual slashing damage, anyone else? There must be others.

Personally find it a nice alternative to swords, since most classes can't wield them. Claws are a powerful tool, but their limited range helps them not feel too broken.

I feel like there hasn't been enough love given to the ursidaes, their claws are very op both in terms of damage, durability, and movement across terrain, they can climb trees terrifyingly fast, move quick enough to catch much of the prey around their area... good jack of all trades builds
To be fair, it takes a good spread of base stats to accomplish all that, same with felines honestly. The best claws tend to belong to the best stat spreads.
In reality a bear could inflict heavier damage than a cat , cause their claws are built to give huge hammering damage which could even break bones
@@GonnaPutSomeDirtInYourEyes-786 Depends on if the cat is big and if it gets the ambush. The bear doesn't usually have stealth covered that well. But in general, you're correct. I think that's why most cats stay in small or medium weight-class.

He has come from rating how good animals are to creating full blown animations and an animation studio. It’s quite surreal isn’t it?
I believe one of the reasons flying insects are so successful is because they don’t need to trade out their claws for wings like birds do. Being able to possess wings as a separate body part than claws allows for much better versatility than animals that have to pick just one of the two.

Honestly, having lived with one of the laziest cats I've ever known, sometimes the image of what raw athleticism the big cats are capable of is just staggering. I see where a lot of super hero abilities come from. And big cats don't even need super powers to pull off some seriously insane stunts.
One of my cats is the laziest piece of shit I've ever seen. She begs me for food in the morning by sitting on me and will only play with toys if they don't require her to move. However, one of her favorite spots is the top of my bathroom cabinet which is probably 8 feet tall and at least 4 feet above my bathroom counter. There's nothing near it that she could obviously use to climb up and yet I constantly find her at the top.
@@ericw.1620 different cat, but I once had a 22lb cat who would jump from the kitchen sink counter, to the cabinets above. While she couldn't jump the whole distance, she could catch the edge and pull herself up with surprising grace. It's a 5 foot vertical gap from the counter to the cabinet edge. When she got older she simply jumped the 3 foot gap to the top of the refrigerator and then hopped up. How she hauled her fat body up there like nothing was crazy.

great video, one big issue: cheetahs are the only feline that doesn’t have retractable claws ability (there’s are canine-like and are well suited for sprinting).
Yeah. The handling bonus claws grant is used so much by cheetah players that retractability is wasted evolution points
They have this one claw, the most medial one, it doesn't touch the ground much and stays sharp
They do but it only partially retracts
That's why cheetahs are fast! Not only they have a slender body shape but have dull like dog claws (like you said) for gripping the ground making sprinting more easier(?) They are made for running fast :-D

Bats probably would have been a good segment around 6:00 as an example of an airiel build with climbing capability. Great video
But bats aren’t birds, and he was specifically discussing birds.
Fun fact: It is thought that many sauropod dinosaurs had one single claw on each front limb which they used for a variety of reasons including defence and combat against each other. These titans probably collided like elephant seals do today scoring and stabbing each other's skin with their claws. I can’t wait to see the 3D animated series you have planned! The hologram design of the animals reminded me of Ultimate Animal Countdown and Animal Fight Night on Nat Geo Wild.
My claw tier list: F: Sea lions. What are these even for? D: Most primates. Their nails, while sharp, don't really aid in grappling (which these builds excel at without their claws anyway) and are pretty weak in combat. C: Dogs, bears, cheetahs, sloths: Ground-gripping claws are not good for combat. Tree gripping claws are awkward as hell to actually use. But they do grant a mobility bonus. B: Giant Anteaters. These claws have some of the highest anti-armor bonuses in the game and are so powerful they're used as anti-materiel weapons against fortifications. On the other hand, their basic damage is not great so they really need to be able to grapple into a crushing attack to make these things lethal. Horses and giraffes: Mobility bonus AND a super powerful attack with good reach and low end lag? Most lizards since their claws are both very sharp and good for climbing. A: Cats: moderate damage but excellent grip to help them land a lethal bite attack. Birds of prey: brutal damage rivaling bite attacks, plus excellent accuracy. S: Crabs. One of the strongest crushing type attacks in the game. Pistol shrip: Ranged hydrodynamic shock attack? WHAT?
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm not sure about the last one, crabs while they have powerful claws aren't all that powerful overall right?
I'd disagree with anteater claws doing not so great damage, there were anteaters who used their claws to one-shot humans with guns and also dogs, dealing insane puncture puncture and heavy bleed damage
You forgot the SSS: Wolverine
