Renovating a Portuguese Farm | Our dream project starts NOW!
Our lifelong dream to renovate and own a Portuguese Farm starts now! We're taking a short break from our USA road trip to share with you the very beginning of this very exciting and very ambitious self build project. This will be a full renovation series as we turn this abandoned farm into a thriving off-grid homestead. We also share some personal news which we're excited for you to all know about!
We are the Newbys, John, Tara, and our two little boys Crusoe and Sawyer. We’re a family who are pursuing an alternative lifestyle, and after two years of full time travel we’ve taken root on an abandoned farm in Northern Portugal which we’re renovating into our dream off-grid homestead. We release new videos every Sunday sharing our story, and we’d love for you to be a part of it with us. The algorithm literally just suggested this video and I'm so glad it did! How exiting and what a fantastic Quinta you have! I have two suggestions, firstly talk to an arborist before cuttinf down or pruning your fruit trees. It's worth whatever a consuktation costs as it will save your old trees and rejuvinate them and your fututlre harvests and prevent disease. Secondly, if you decide to get animals and especially dogs please resucue and turn to shelters instead of shopping. Portugal is unfortunately alot like Spain and Greece when it comes to mistreatment of animals and the dog pounds and rescue centers are overflowing with beautiful podenco potrugese, mastines and other dogs all desperate for some kindness and safety, and your farm is a perfect place for any animal. Now I'm exited to look at what I've missed out on as this was posted 3 months ago, and your baby is due in weeks only! We bought our house in rural Alto Alentejo, Portugal, 2kms from the Spanish border in 2003. We renovated the main house straight away, then moved back to the UK to earn and plan for our early retirement. We used it for holidays until we moved back permanently in 2013. The projects never end and money has always been tight, but what a fabulous life we have had. All the major capital projects are now finished. Income finally exceeds outgoings. Life is unimaginably sweet. I envy you the start of your journey. If I had my time again, I wouldn't change a thing.
Thank you SO much for writing to us Ian, you've inspired us even further on this journey, and also helped to shape some of the thoughts we have about what the future might look like. We are beyond excited for all of it, and feel incredibly fortunate to be here. Enjoy your special spot in this beautiful country and it's great to have you along for the ride.
My advice would be to do nothing initially, let the land speak to you over time and it will become clear. I made several mistakes by trying to impose my English ideas on the land and was disappointed with the results so I learnt to take daily walks to the various spaces ,watching sunrises and sunsets, noting what grows in abundance and giving the land its opportunity to reveal itself. You will also find that what you initially thought you wanted will change as a more simple way of living creeps into your soul. I wish you the best of luck, what a wonderful and lifechanging opportunity to show your children how to respect our beautiful world.

Centipedes are poisonous I’m sure or they give you a nasty bite we used to live inSpain , and if you cut them in half they can grow again , I hated+ them , stay away fro: them or kill them , I only saw a couple on out property and they were in the underbuild , looking forward to your journey xx

Don't kill that "spider" cause it's not a spider, it actually eats other smaller bugs in the house. :D In Croatia, we call it "the houndredlegged one". Enjoy Portugal!

What a beautiful property. You are so fortunate to have found such a gem. I too am looking at northern Portugal for a possible future home for myself, so I am eager to see how you progress. I don't know what your long term plans are for the property, but if you're thinking about getting rental income, consider developing a co-living arrangement for future tenants, whereby there are private rooms but shared communal areas like garden, kitchen, bathing, working, living. Co-living is a more sustainable way to live. This would appeal to digital nomads and adventurers like yourselves, and lend a community feel to the accommodation. You could build common outdoor areas in those places you're wondering how to use, for exercise, meditation, crafts, and that tree house too! Good luck and enjoy the process!

Very beautiful new home. My g grandparents came from the azores. Islands part of Portugal. Every time I mention the Azores. No one knows where that’s at. They traveled to Ellis island and my g grandmother was an indentured servant. She was treated badly by the lady of the house and then she made it towards California and there they farmed.

I really enjoy the enclosed European places. When I was younger I enjoyed the old areas where the early Los Angeles actors lived, I remember eating my lunch on the steps of hodinis house. He was building before he died.

Congratulations on the news of your new baby. Your Portugal property is beautiful. Seems like a lot of cleaning and renovating, however, the outcome will be gorgeous. I would consider a power washer to clean the stone table and benches as well as that huge patio and driveway. Anyway, blessings to y’all and your lovely family. I’ll be following your endeavors.

Here's an ideal. Regarding your water tank/ swimming pool. Drill a hole in the bottom of the wall, and put a plastic pipe in and seal it up to stop water leaking. If you get a large wood burner or chimminy. Wrap it with copper pipe and attach a water pump. Then the water will get pumped out if the pool around the around the heating source and back into the top of the pool. Enjoy! 😉

Through Africa and USA and finally to this wonderful farm with the Mediterranean weather. They are young and still have plenty energy to do the renovation and farming. Their lovely toddler will grow up been a practical person able to survive in any place and any circumstances

Congratulations on the baby guys! A big project but it's going to be an amazing one! There are charities like Emmaus here in France that do house clearances for free, otherwise you can drop off the stuff you don't want. Recycle rather than dump! Keep what you might use, save some pennies for the bigger projects. We're also thinking of moving to Portugal in a few years so would love to know how you found your property and what hoops you had to jump through!

@@TheNewbys You should do a search for "loja de antiguidades" in your area. These are small shops that usually buy and sell second hand home items, of almost any kind. For small stuff they usually don’t pay much, but it is better than nothing. You can also try to sell online, it’s not uncommon in Portugal. You can also donate some of the stuff to social institutions, in small towns these are probably associated with the local church. If you live near a small town usually the typical cafe will be a good place to ask for this kind of info - they usually know "everyone" around. By the way, be careful with those centipedes, don’t let them bite you since they are somewhat poisonous, though nothing too serious. best wishes

But now seeing the property, it looks very exciting! Love all the buildings, terraces, level ground good for planting, views and greenery.... lots and lots of wonderful intimate spaces to imagine over and their future. Living in it for a year will help clarify what's to be done, tons of work, but I think it will end up being a lovely gem and a happy place to raise a family ;-)!

I love old houses and things .Exploring in this property is really a dream .It is sooo interesting imagine the history behind it .There are so many things left there that are also very personal ,it is like people left yesterday and 2 of the buildings do not seem to be damaged at all. And the fields and forests :wow !
