Another Room (Almost) FINISHED! - Renovating a House in Portugal

2024 ж. 12 Сәу.
67 789 Рет қаралды

We've been working away on the lounge renovation over the last three months: plastering, plumbing, lime washing, tiling and more.
Since we've shown a number of these things in previous videos we thought we'd put them all together into one long video to show how this room has transformed over the last few weeks. But, of course, there is still more to do so we'll update you on all that towards the end.
Sit back, relax and stay tuned for some good old timelapse renovation works.

  • That floor looks 10/10. And you have done so great work that you really don’t need skirting tiles at all. I think that it looks better without.

    • For the looks you might be right, but, When you clean the floor wet, skirting tiles you can touch without a problem, the stuck at the wall would become dirty over time

    • Seconding the no skirting tiles. With grouting and sealing, I think it would not be necessary. Also, not doing it now does not prevent doing it later if you find it would be better. Undoing skirting tiles… not so easy

    • Another vote for no skirting tiles - the finish is spot on. Is Guy half full and Kylie half empty ?

  • The floor is absolutely wonderful! If you had hired the work done, there isn't enough money in the world to compensate a contractor who would lay the tiles with such precision and loving care. A hundred years from now, that floor will still be as beautiful as it is today. And now your knees and your backs need a break!

  • Have you considered doing a skirting corner block? I think it’s also called a plinth block. You maybe be able to buy rectangular blocks of your stone (so the colour isn’t too different), and either carve the curve out of the back of the block or carve a rectangular notch into your wall.

  • The border tiles around the door. Don't make too many small slivers. One on 45 degrees wouldn't be enough. But I think two facets would be enough. The more you do, the messier it will look. If you make more pieces, the more surfaces you have to align. Even though it won't be similar round surface as the wall, it will be a marrige of the two - organic wall and straight stone floor. Keep it simple...

  • Notched trowels are used with thinset mortar and you need to coat both the floor and the tile back side. With what you all are doing it is best to just put a mortar bed down and using leveling clips to ensure the tile surfaces match (that's if all of the tiles are the same thickness, otherwise just press into the mortar bed and use a level).

  • Lovely, that floor is just lovely! I think when people use the notched trowel on the floor, they may also be “back buttering” the tile itself to get as much foundation as you guys put down in the end! Whatever works for you guys is the ANSWER! Well done, looks beautiful!!!

  • Wonderful work, fabulous results which will remain enduringly beautiful! As soon as I saw you trying the notched trowel I thought 'no, not with a slack mix of mortar...' I'm sure you are correct: laying a (comparatively) thick bed for the slabs requires overall support so a slack mix allows the required movement. People saying you should use a notched trowel must be more familiar with thin layers of adhesive: that tool is designed to lay a bed that averages around half the depth of the notch, WAY less than you needed! You guys do well to draw on others' experience when relevant but rely on your own sound instincts. 👍🤗

  • Hello To You Both. You are making a lovely job of renovating your house and you can take your time to get it right and how you want it. Imagine buying a property and you have the deposit but the House is in bad shape and a mortgage is not available because no one will lend money on the property as it is so run down. A couple wanted to buy the Property in Scotland but couldn't as they couldn't buy it outright. The property is a 20 Acre farm with out buildings and the person who owned it put a proposition to the couple, he asked them for their deposit and gave them two years to get the house into mortgageable condition. They took him up on his offer and they got the keys in March of this year and they are under the cosh to get it done or they loose everything including the money they will spend on the property. They have started a KZhead channel called Sh!t we bought a farm and that is a exclamation mark after the h. You might want to have a look and maybe give them some tips, they are a young couple and have the energy but will they do it. They have put out about 6 video's up till now. Very worth a watch. Cheers and have a nice weekend.

  • There is something comforting about watching both of you work together. I can't imagine my disagreeing with any way you choose do things because I know you've researched, tested, measured and discussed pretty much every detail before hand. Kudos, even after all of that for trying what people advise! You do find the best way to work with your materials and because of that I can rest in comfort, as a viewer, knowing that whatever you do is going to go smoothly and if not, you will both discuss, agree and move on. (and if not, we will not witness any strife because you will protect us from that!) P.S. Have I mentioned that you both, if you choose to (no pressure, not my business) would make amazing parents? Any way, glad to see that you're following your new rule of not over-doing it and taking some time off. Enjoy! See you in 2 weeks!

  • notched trowel requires the thinset (adhesive) to be thicker. It also assumes that you are not trying to build up the base thickness with the adhesive which is why the notched trowel moved too much material around. Conventionally, you would build up the base with mortar, let set, then use the adhesive with the notch trowel.

I also have to mention the scribing, what a superb job that was, its one of those jobs the you don't notice until you do it wrong then it stands out like a sore thumb. No sore thumb on your floor, well done. After all that work you deserve a GOOD break, it will give you both time to recoup and also time for things to dry out. • I would suggest Skirting tiles look a bit fussy if you use mitre slivers on the Radius .(Radii ?) you have when your floor is such a bold clean visual statement .You could decide not to have any up stand on the door radius and finish the upstands back from the curves by a couple of centimeters and round/nose off and Polish the upstands ends .(Any stone yard will do this for you to your template )Make a clean feature of this rustic regularity rather than attempting to “bend “stone round them .Just a thought .cheers .the floor looks ace by the way .

  • The floor is gorgeous, any renovation programs and u tube channels I watch they always seal the tiles before grouting, which was a new one to me. I thought it was done the other way around. A few months ago, my cousin was having her kitchen and hall tiled out of curiosity, I asked the tiler what way he did it. He said always seal first, then grouting that all natural tiles are porous sealing before grouting fills the pores with protective selaer stopping the grout causing a hazy surface on the tiles and proceting the tiles from dirt.
