We hear our names every day, they are more than a word to us all, but what do they mean? We called our son Crusoe, quite controversial at the time. 6 months later and the name is growing into a personality.
As a little boy, John read Robinson Crusoe several times, it might have been the first book he read that had no pictures in it, his imagination running wild because words without pictures can do that to a mind. And, so it was, that John had found the book that would guide his life. Some people find the Bible, other people education, John found Robinson Crusoe and it acted as a catalyst for his love affair with travel and adventure. Even the Newby strap line, Think Big | Be Brave | Explore, holds roots in what Robinson Crusoe must have been thinking as he waited 28 years for his escape.
Walking in the footsteps of Daniel Defoe this past weekend in London felt particularly poignant when we considered the impact that a man who wrote an imaginary tale some 300 years ago has had on our lives. He wove into our DNA adventure and exploration some two decades ago, and has provided the first bit of identity for a very special little person. We stood as a young family at the monument erected in his memory at Bunhill Burial Grounds and said our quiet thanks.
We are the Newbys, John, Tara, and our two little boys Crusoe and Sawyer. We’re a family who are pursuing an alternative lifestyle, and after two years of full time travel we’ve taken root on an abandoned farm in Northern Portugal which we’re renovating into our dream off-grid homestead. We release new videos every Sunday sharing our story, and we’d love for you to be a part of it with us.   • London so much history and places to visit, I thank-you for showing us some parts that remain unknown, Daniel Defoe also was a favorite story a long, long time ago.   • The most beautiful and poignant video yet. Goosebumps seeing you all in front of Daniel Dafoe’s memorial and picturing the amazing life that lies ahead for your special young man.   • EGADS! The memories. I worked at Moorgate for over a decade. However, my memories don't coincided with your video. How London has changed. At that time, I was living in Stoke Newington where Defoe lived on Church St. Oddly, I never bumped into him. Maybe I should visit one of these days. Great video. Really enjoyed it!

    • Hi Mike, how are you friend? London has changed you are right, in a very short period of time too, lots of glass buildings going up in strange shapes. It's quite amazing to see. Looks like we need a return visit to Church st, see where Defoe lived too!!   • Greenwich. So much countryside in the middle of a city. A wonderful way to spend a Sunday mooching around, and winding down, while thinking about the start of a journey that will bring you back to the spot where you started, wether you go to the left or right of that line.   • What a joy filled happy day! An adventure of the very best kind. You travelled far to discover a small spot, a very important small spot, only to find something huge glittering and unexpected! You persisted…..and so found spot after glorious spot in the slightly mysterious story of Daniel Defoe. I have a feeling that Defoe, a uniquely different adventurer, who summoned up one of the greatest adventure stories, sits on your shoulder as you travel our world of wonder with Crusoe! Crusoe, with the wide eyes of innocence, the direct gaze of pure seeing, followed always by the beaming smile of simply knowing! Loved every moment, thank you very much 🏝🥰

  • We took our 3 young children to Greenwich to the timeline. Our youngest escaped, each of us thought the other had him. He was about 4! He had seen some people playing football on our way there and went to look for them. He got on a bus and thankfully the driver asked him where his mum and dad were and refused to drive off until we arrived. Terrifying! But we will never forget that day. When you take your children on adventures, sometimes things go wrong but they will learn from all of those experiences! And so will you❤️Glad you are giving your son a spirit of adventure. We did the same with ours. No regrets!

  • How wonderful and also how history has had developed such a feeling. This is for sure one of my favorite books specially after the movie was made. Reading was my patron since a little girl. I learned how to read and right because my 1st Primary class, and was told to move to the 2nd grade because I already was doing the writing and reading well. History, true history do make our mind and thinking develop in a very curious and learning way, being more positive learning that we can also make our life more interesting as we learn about the many worldwide events. My parents had to live Hungary when the 2nd war ended, they didn’t want to remain under the Russian domination. Their many events also taught me how there are and they had so many good people as friends in their hard moments.

  • You need to visit Fife, Lower Largo which is near us has the "Robinson Crusoe" statue, it's actually of Alexander Selkirk who is widely regarded as Defoe's inspiration for the character. It's a beautiful area and we'll worth spending time 😁

  • I live in Fife and quite near to the pretty village of Lower Largo. This is the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk, the sailor that Defoe modelled his character, Robinson Crusoe, on. There is a statue of Selkirk and also a great hotel called the Crusoe Hotel situated at the harbour. It is such a pretty village and one of my favourite places to visit.

  • This is so The Newbys! You don´t forget the to start at the beginning, take that in and then you´re off. Brilliant! London has soooo much to give, go to Southall and you´re in Punjab. No queues, no stamp in your passport but everything else is 99% India. Well, the smell is a bit different and not all the honking horns (beeeeppapadoddadoooooooooo!)
