Our farm renovation in Portugal | Fires, vines & A COMPETITION!

2022 ж. 22 Мам.
136 715 Рет қаралды

This week we finally get permission to burn all the debris from the clearing we've done on the farm. We also get started on maintaining and cleaning up our grape vines which we have been so excited to do. Most importantly - there is a competition running so you do not want to miss this!!
We are the Newbys, John, Tara, and our two little boys Crusoe and Sawyer. We’re a family who are pursuing an alternative lifestyle, and after two years of full time travel we’ve taken root on an abandoned farm in Northern Portugal which we’re renovating into our dream off-grid homestead. We release new videos every Sunday sharing our story, and we’d love for you to be a part of it with us. Please remember to SUBSCRIBE if you haven’t already, it’s free and super easy to do and it helps us hugely.
Thank you for being here. We hope that we can inspire you to Be Brave, Think Big and to Explore.

  • As another person noted, this was a perfect video to view on a Sunday afternoon. People of different generations working together with mutual respect for each other. Women pictured as vigorous and knowledgeable. A child playing freely, knowing he's loved and cherished by all. It felt as if this is how it always has been and should be, like something an early 20th century painter would have captured in one of those "in the orchard" paintings that were done by so many. You've accomplished so much.

    • I grew up in a bamboo grove in Guam where I was born. To my Favorite YT 👪 please allow me. Bamboo can be pretty, eaten and can be one's source of "Lumber yard for home contruction." It makes for great floor, wall, roof and they last many lifetimes. If planted 15'ft per batch and controlled by tying the whole bamboo in the center of it's height with something strong and has a latch to hold it tight. which my Uncles found to be around 30'ft. High. The first 10'ft from the top is devoted to making fishing poles. The second half of The bamboo is good for furniture and the last and thick (bottom) of the bamboo is for wide width floors. Just use nice thick. Work gloves, you can get nasty cut. Hope that helps. Bamboo is also used as featured H2O falls and ditch drainage and Tahitian light post

  • Don't burn the debri, use it as mulch to cover the ground, keeps the moisture in the ground so the soil doesn't dry out too much (its a way to garden working with nature). After a while, you won't need to turn the top soil,it will be airy and full of nutrients. It's the principle of permaculture gardening (you can maybe look it up?). Sorry for my English, I'm from Belgium. I realy like your channel and your super cute little boy! Patricia

  • I had a rock too on my property , I called it Lucy's Rock after my Spanish rescue dog whom I saved from being drowned by a cruel landowner. She loved to sit on the rock in the cool of the evenings, her proud little head held high as she surveyed our land and bathed in sunset light and cooling breezes. Sadly I have had to leave my blessed Finca, I miss it terribly, the freedom of the land, the turn of the seasons, the fruit of my labours sustaining me. 'Casa Limon' fed my soul and to watch you guys starting from scratch and building the type of life I believe humans were meant to live, fills me with joy. Of course you don't have a Lucy but call your rock something that resonates with your family, with little Cruso or the new life growing inside you and that way, if you ever leave, you will always been able to remember your rock by name and with the utmost affection.

My Chinese neighbor has a lemon tree and shares with us and she zest her lemons and dries the zest and puts the zest in a big jar and uses it in tea and soup ! Also ,we fill our ice cube trays with pure lemon juice for lemon water and when making soup just pop a couple of the cubes in the soup ! Also the fresh zest over salad the health benefits are off the charts , so don't waste any of those lemons 👍 thank you for sharing your beautiful life with us , now I will go out and work in my own property 😀

Now 32 years old he his living one his dreams and works in motocross and super cross work that takes him to a new city every week. He too spent a lot of time coming with me to work all over the world. I have been to 27 countries and have lived in 3 countries other than USA. My son lived with me when I had to go over to the Middle East to work. Obviously he did not accompany me when I was deployed over seas for brief periods in the the Middle East with my service in the Air Force. Your farm house is super cool to me. Living and working on a farm like yours has been a dream of mine. Its good to have dreams even at my age of 57. I still smell the flowers and the Black Forest in Germany. Such a beautiful country. • Bamboo spreads through underground rhizomes, so cutting it is like mowing the grass (bamboo is a grass), & mowing it won't kill it. You would probably need several sessions (over a few months) with an excavator to get rid of it all.

    • Annie you are correct bamboo is a grass and does grow from rhizomes , and like grass it's roots need to produce foliage in order to photosynthesis, unlike other grass types it is much easier to deprive of light by extremely regular cutting and the rhizomes which act as a food store will deplete each time they put up new shoots starve them to death. of course you dont need to cut the shoots boiling them works just as well steam cleaner or kettle. one thing for sure you cant afford to take a weeks break if you want to defeat it, similar problems with ground elder Japanese knot weed, scutch grass and blackberry. digging is useless unless you are in a position to use an excavator to dig up the infected area and sterilize the soil ,rocky soil makes this problematic roots can escape detection and hey presto your expensive solution wasted.keep it cheap and chemical free.

(I think a tooth pick might be a great tool to emboss the words in while it is still damp and when it dries, Crusoe can color over the letters to magnify the motto.)💖

  • I think you should keep the old grape vine supports. They're very cool visually and part of the history of your home. One suggestion would be to hang (solar) patio lights ✨️ on them, frame that view to the gardens. Maybe hang ferns on them, like staghorn ferns! Many cool things you can do with them! But keep them! Name your rock: There is a huge beautiful granite rock called "Moro Rock" located in the Sequoia & Kings Canyons in Northern California. Since you enjoyed your visit to Cali so much!

Y'all need a wood chipper to cut up all your garden debry. Makes lovely mulch fir the gardens to hold in moisture and deter weeds. And so nice to add to compost. Lemons- canned lemon curd, lemon tart, lemon pound cake (lovely with morning tea). Rock- Gonubie Named for a town in South Africa . I had so much fun during camp we all collected a bunch of rocks and then picked out favorite one and decorated them. I named mine Skyla Because I loved looking at the sky everyday and still do to see the sun rise and set . I think the older we get the more we enjoy the outdoors and nature . • So much accomplished this week. It’s great that you have such wonderful neighbours and friends. With the lemons, I like to add many, many slices to 10 Earl Grey tea bags in a large jug, with honey and whole cloves, and then after about 10 or 15 minutes in boiled water, I remove the tea bags, lemon slices and cloves, and then refrigerate the jug to keep on hand. Easy and tasty iced tea. Lemon yoghurt cake is my all time favourite cake, and quick and easy to bake. But I did first think that John must have drunk Finnish Sima during his long stay in Finland. I myself have never made it, but my mother did every summer here in Australia when my siblings and I were young. It’s delicious!

It will be a great way for your kids to grow up 😍 it was surprising for me that you burned the leaves, twigs and other plant/shrub/tree cuttings - Leaves and twigs are great resources and it’s a shame to just burn it. You can also leaves to make leaf mould. Twigs can be composted. If you’re planning to grow vegetables, research “hugelkultur” which is where you build beds on logs, twigs, leaves, grass, compost, etc and it creates a really fertile growing area. Someone else mentioned a chipper which is a great idea too - you could use the chipping a on your compost heap or in your paths 😊

On the other hand, in my hometown, I see the farmers cut back their vines each year for bumper crops. As for the rock.... I would like to quote Shirley Valentine who said her rock on the beach is called Rock. His name runs through him. I think yours should be named Rock too. Simply Rock. Shirley spoke to her rock but it didn't understand as it was a Greek Rock. Yours clearly is Portuguese so you guys will know how much you can talk to it. 😄

  • The Waving Rock -- When we were kids, my cousins had a rock on the edge of their property. Whenever anyone left, they'd run out and stand on it and wave and wave to those leaving. Sometimes, if they knew someone was coming and when, they'd stand there in preparation and wave and wave. When they were really little, they'd sometimes stand there a wave at anyone driving by. The other cousins, myself included, would sometimes join in. Not sure it's applicable for where your rock is on your property, etc..., but that happy memory came to mind. Then, you were saying hello and waving! Not sure you were on the rock overlooking the area with the fires, though. When I saw that, I thought I should share. :) (Also, I've heard that vinegar kills regular garden weeks. I wonder if it would kill bamboo.)

Bamboo…..very hard to get rid of and really does need to be removed by the rhizomes that grow underground…..I did hear that vinegar kills them off but I reckon you would need gallons lol! So systematic removal is the way to go….As for the rock…..🤔 that’s a hard one as I have so many choices of rock having grown up in Cornwall…..but I will choose Trencrom as it’s a whole area of rock, high on a hill looking out over all of Mounts Bay…..where you can sit and survey the land before you…..pretty apt for your property lol….sitting and surveying your kingdom 👀 looking forward to next week already! Best wishes and ❤️ Julie in South Devon

  • Regarding bamboo, remember that roots depend on leaves too; vigilant cutting of the aerial parts of the plant - and no photosynthesis - will eventually starve them. Grasses are really tough, and bamboos are especially so, but I think you’ll find that over time, they’ll get weaker and spread less. It will be a lot of work, but it will still be easier and less disruptive to neighboring plants than digging up a formidable root system.

  • Hi Tara and John! my 95 yr-old patient/employer loves your channel! Her name is Nancy. She used to be a traveler too. We watch your videos while having breakfast or just anytime. I have it on her big screen since her vision is not the best anymore. But yeah, your videos is one of our faves now! We live in Chicago, do you think you can say hi to Nancy in one of your videos in the future? thanj you! The hammock is beautiful, btw! God bless! Am am, hehe Crusoe 's excitement to have the tangerine and 😊😊

  • I too have a Meyer 🍋 Tree.... I zest my lemons and juice them with an electric juicer....then make a simple sugar syrup with Stevia...Ex's: Pyrue...Sweet Leaf or Monk Fruit...will even work....then I'll make two gallons of fresh lemonade.....and if I have left over 🍋🍋.... I will take the zest and juice and mix together...and freeze this in freezer bags or freezer safe containers....I use this all year long .. hope this helps a little !!!! You guys are a joy to watch....😊❤️
