Bonjour à tous,
It’s the 9th Day of Christmas here at the château and back to DIY work.
The panelling need removing in the pink bathroom for all the water pipes to be hidden behind as Terry never does anything easy or simple, but as Terry and Ash remove the panelling they discover a brick wall ready to fall down.
If you would like to join us on our family journey restoring this once abandoned château, please just follow the link below, 🥰

🏰 Château de Lalacelle

France
We just like to thank everyone for sending us some beautiful Christmas cards, we ready do appreciate it 🥰🥰
About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

  • I follow a number of the chateau channels. You guys probably have the greatest degree of difficulty in your renovations in that your chateau was in the worst state when you bought it AND you have the least amount of money to fix it up. It is incredible what you are doing. Total attention to detail - you take no short cuts - and manage it, as a team, with pure hard work and expertise. I have so much respect for you all.

    • If you include the French-language channels I'd say Chateau du Theil was much further gone but the rebuild looks like a massive professional project (leaving very little historic charm inside the stone walls). Chateau d'Olly is quite far up the list too though, and that's one mad DIY project!

    • You’ll have to hold an open day next year for the villagers. They must be curious to see what you’ve done. Perhaps when you’re ready to launch your accommodation suites. Perhaps Tracy and the mayor can cut a ribbon at the gate or at the new front doors.

  • Many of your fellow chateau DIYers seem to be suffering from cold living and work spaces. As a Canadian who lived in - 40C winters and also lived in Beijing through 4 winters, I have some advice. Get yourselves some long johns- thermal long underwear and dress in layers. Always wear a hat, gloves and winter boots. I am a nursery school teacher and spent a good portion of each day outside with my students.

  • You don't do things "the easy way," but you do them the best way for the ultimate durability, craftmanship,, and beauty of your wonderful chateau. It must often be a bit of an internal struggle to reconcile how much more work you need to take on by doing such quality rather than fast renovations. Know that we all appreciate to excellent and beautiful work that all of your family has been doing.

  • That room will be amazing when it's done. Just a tip about the log burner, if you take a little ash (no pun intended) out of the grate and gently rub it into the glass all the burnt on soot will come off easy. Then shine it with some kitchen roll and a little white vinegar. Your fire will look like new!

  • Another wonderful episode! I was so excited to see the front doors come back. What an amazing job Hans has done and Tracy was so very thoughtful to have crocheted hats for everyone. I have watched their channel and I am not surprised she did that. It is obvious she is a very nice lady. Ash, you have no idea how appreciative I am of your tutorial on the seal for the stove. I have a wood burning stove as well here in Texas and it needs a new seal. I lost my husband a year ago and I was at a loss as to how to replace the rope like cording around the door. Watching you replace it has made me realize I can do it myself. So…a big thank you from Texas! xx

  • So enjoy watching your family on the journey to restore the chateau and cottage. I love your idea of elevating the tub a bit to take advantage of the view with the bonus of hiding waste piping. I think the adversity of having to remove the bathroom wall will actually be an advantage that will allow for space to run the water supply pipes, electrics and install sound insulation between the bath and salon. I hope you have labeled the paneling parts to make it easier to reinstall them! Can't wait to see the front doors installed! Personally, I would drop everything else to get them primed, caulked, painted, glazed, and installed. So exciting to see them rebuilt!

All of you are looking great, this is really lovely for the holidays seeing you all so full of life and love 💕 Now we have the long winter beginning today so it’s time for all of us to prepare our plants and pipes before the freeze comes in. I bought electric oil radiators that really do a nice job only 88$ US. They are nice next to the bed when you don’t want to heat the whole château until it’s good and sealed. What a fine job of craftsmanship on the new doors and the interior paneling, I know they will look fantastic when you refinish them. Your new wall will be excellent compared to the brickwork currently being removed, I can see how they built them so long ago. I wonder if you will be doing any tromp L’oil. I notice you have what sounds like a Barred Owl outside, we have one too, when I hear it I think it’s on my side. Well I do wish you a merry Christmas and one of these days I’ll have to figure out a nice house warming gift for you all, I’m on social security so my budget is tight but I’ll find some way. • Very interesting! I’m perplexed by the brick behind the paneling, installation? Doesn’t make sense, but I know less than nothing about building. Brick would make a beautiful path or walkway though.

  • Your doors are amazing what craftsmanship Hans has made a superb job of them. I was shocked at the state of the wall in the bathroom I hope you can use all the old bricks otherwise there could be problems matching into the panelling in the corners I'm not sure new bricks are the same size ? Looking forward to seeing the progress.

  • How lucky are you to find such a clever craftsman and enthusiast to make those doors.! They are going to look spectacular. Will you put the porch back up eventually? At least the outline is there. I couldn't believe that bathroom wall - are the others okay? The panelling sure covers a multitude of 'bad building practices'. Terry, will you be doing up chairs to sell? The ones I have seen are so beautifully done. Oh. love the owls - we have a family 2 adults and 2 babies in a large tree in the back yard. So funny, the babies are learning to call and do so in the daylight. One thing at a time, I guess.

  • The inner brick walls are not the most substantial things ever, granted. But then again, they were never intended to stand alone. They are part of a system including the paneling on each side, which is pretty sturdy. They may serve as a fire-stop to some degree too. And they've done the job for a couple of centuries. I'd have left them.
