Tony’s friend delivers us 15 trees to plant along the new drive and 40 Hedging bushes to replant In the secret garden.
Terry & Tracy do a little more work around the new BBQ area and start to create the rockery,
And finally, Tracy & Tony get back to working In the cottage bathroom and start to tile the floor.

About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

  • Being a dachshund lover, I can't help but find joy in Patrick's participation with the hole digging. What a handsome guy he is. Mom and Dad seem like such warm and lovely people. It is so nice that you all have taken on this life changing project and are working it to perfection. I love the aerial views of the property. Some of the winter ones are beautiful. I will never make it to France, but if I could, I think I would enjoy a nice walk of the property regardless of the season.

  • Do not use fabric. Use cardboard and put mulch and woodchips over the top. Keeps te weeds out until the plants spread and cover the area. Fabrics gets to be a mess and the plants get stuck it it.

  • Wonderful progress with those "just" jobs. What a difference the planting is making. The chateau and cottage are at the point the projects seem to leap ahead to the finish. The idea of culling the self-seeded flowering plants for the rockery is great as they have proven their success already. It is a joy to see your progress.

  • A little tip for you, when you plant trees put a piece of plastic water pipe in the hole where the roots are, you can then water them every week through the pipe and the water goes straight to the roots, when the tree has established (after about a year) you can pull the pipe out

  • Another amazingly productive week! Love how Patrick and the chickens are always in the thick of any digging job. With the additional money raised for the wall, have you considered a small used digger? You would have a thousand uses for it and it would speed up so many other tasks that you might get to facing the wall sooner.

  • As others have said : Thank goodness you work as a team! So much gets accomplished! May I caution you regarding the planting of the balled shrubs : It's best to remove the burlap. Although it does rot when buried, some shrubs are wired prior to wrapping. This can be a catastrophic mistake as the roots are unable to spread and will produce a shallow, weak rooted shrub or tree. It is safest to unwrap and spread the root system in the planting hole. Keep track of the rainfall, as your plantings will need plenty! Water daily for the first week (rainfall counts), then twice weekly, eventually once a week during the growing season in its first few years in its' new location. One "rule of thumb" to consider is 2-3 gallons per inch of tree diameter per week.

  • I love watching your family and every video of the evolution and of your channel and transformation of the chateau! Your family are truly an inspiration! One tip I wanted to share is regarding the planting and the roots. Root pruning can introduce bacteria or fungus unintentionally as well as stunting their growth creating more shock for the plant. I also recommend not leaving the burplap on even through it can biodegradable because it takes longer for the plant/tree to take up water and nutrients and may contain metal wire or plastics which is harmful to the plant. Plants, especially trees needs to spread their roots and take up nutrients. Each tree needs 2-3 gallons of water or 1” of rain per week at a minimum to help establish the tree and minimize shock which can kill. Be sure the soul is not compact around the tree. I usually dig a hole 2-3x as deep and twice as deep to ensure the soil is loose around the tree. I’d hate to see all your hard work die off and I really would love to see you successful for all your hard work. I hope this helps! Thanks for all your family is doing! I love watching! ❤️

  • All of my tree planting helpful hints came from my Dad (WWll veteran). Any "bare root tree or scrub" should be put first into a bucket of water for a length of time before planting to soak the roots. Then dig your hole for planting. When placing a new tree into the ground also cut a short piece of plastic pipe, placing the pipe at an angle, exposing the pipe end upwards. This pipe opening allows direct access to the tree's roots for watering. After a few years when the tree is truly established, pull out the pipe. I have used my Dad's method all of my adult life and have never lost a newly planted tree or scrub. GOOD LUCK!

  • What a great progress, again. If it is very windy there the trees would definitely benefit from tying the tree trunk to the supporting poles on two opposite sides of the tree. It would help them to grow straight and also they would root better as the tree wouldn't be swaying so much in the wind, especially when the leaves are there the wind catches the tree top even more. I know it is a heck of a lot of extra work but it would ensure the trees would have a lovely start to grow. Keep up the good work. And remember to have a rest every now and then. It will be an extra special time when you finally can have a bath 💙

This is the season to do pollarding. You will need a tall ladder, a "pop-up"(hydraulic motorized scissor lift) or a cherry picker to reach the tops of the trees.. Save some work for the volunteers! Best wishes!

How fortunate though that the trees and shrubs happened to be delivered during a period of glorious weather ... as otherwise you could all have been shivering in horizontal rain and sleet trying to get those holes dug! Great effort from you all as usual - but as others have pointed out, a stake or two for some of those trees (maybe just for the first year) will help them get established as the position in the field is very exposed to strong wind. That drive is looking amazing - looking forward to seeing a drone shot of it as Tony was suggesting. 🥰

  • Hey Guys, I wonder if you could get ahold of a used auger. It would help when planting a multitude of trees and shrubs and be more efficient than a shovel. Remember when planting trees, as far and wide as the branches of trees spread above ground is how far and wide the roots will spread below ground, so make sure those holes are nice, wide and not too deep. It'll give those freebees a fighting chance in the next couple years! It's looking good Guys!!!! You're doing a bang up job!
