Bonjour à tous, In this episode at the château the family tackle the walled garden. After clearing a lot of the area last year the family are set to create a beautiful formal garden this year, but first have a mountain of work to do, starting with removing all the trees that have self seeded over the years to create a blank canvas for a stunning landscape design, but as the family get to work the walled garden starts to look more like a bomb has hit it than a formal garden.

About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

Think ill have to invest if #lalacelle approved 🥰🥰
I think you should take out the last straggling tree. I can't wait to see the formal garden design come to fruition! Your channel continues to captivate your fans to find out what you'll do next... Rock on Dream Team Chateau De Lalacelle!
I think it should come out , it’s not heathy
I ordered one of the pillows. Can’t wait to see how it works. ❤
I like that tree! I like the original shape! It has character! It isn’t close to any walls….it will grow taller as well, so the sight from the stairs should be ok! But you guys live there, so it is your choice! And everyone has an opinion! Lol!
Johnathan is such a healthy, happy little guy. He will grow up with an incredibly wide scope of abilities. He has everything important a little boy needs... especially love.
Where are Jonathan's parents? Always wondered but didn't want to ask.
@@mitsatakkou7308 Maybe you'll find out one day and maybe you won't. That's just the way it is. The channel is about the chateau not their personal lives.
@@mitsatakkou7308 …then don’t ask✨
@Mitsa Takkou that question is out of order the lad needs privacy
@@Dave_1966 I thought it was common knowledge as I don't read the comments , I didn't ask out of spite, thank you for your honest reply,,,,people need to chill.
I will have to agree with those who say "Take it out!" and give the Formal Garden designers a clean slate to work with. And, for sentimental reasons, one could even take a cutting off it to plant elsewhere, so it would still be present on the château grounds.
I think everyone agrees about the tree 🥰
Where is Tony; haven’t seem him for such a long time?
I think you're right about the tree. It's better out. Or, if you relish the challenge; transplant it to another spot on the property.
I agree... it needs to go.
I Agree ☝️ Take it down
Yup, get rid of it.
yup - take it out and start over.
Thank you ☺️
It's amazing how much more confident you are now ash,to start you seemed akward and shy on camera but mate you are owning it now, good on ya, really enjoyed todays vlog boys and tracy
Thank you Huw 😊
Almost as much fun as watching the inside of the chateau glow again is seeing the grounds and gardens come back to life! Ash...cut the tree down!
Thanks Cynthia 😊
I agree, take the tree out.
I am a keen gardener and believe in Starting with a blank canvass. You. will only get the one chance so take it, embrace it and make it yours the way you want it to be. You will not regret it. Draw up a list of what the outside will contain as ‘ must keeps’ and ‘must haves’ and make little cut-outs for features, plantings and so on. There are some great garden design apps out there so you can see your dreams come virtually to life. Then the real fun starts.😘
Thank you ☺️
That's what I thought I wouldn't pay anybody but do my research of plants etc soil etc
Your plans are for formal gardens. The tree is part of the recent past (last forty years), it’s part of the history of the chateau’s neglect period. It needs to be removed, so that you can achieve the formal gardens of symmetry, regal beauty. The glory of the era of the 18th century recreation would be marred by a reminder of the neglect the “Old Lady” went through in recent past. My opinion. ❤️🏰
Take the scrubby little tree out!! You are creating a new beautiful garden, so it has to go. Very impressed at how well you all work as a team. This is our favorite #1 video.
Thank you ☺️
I wouldn't want it to block a lovely view. The view is priceless
Thank you ☺️
Whilst it’s always sad to see trees come down, like all things they have a lifespan and so it’s just an opportunity to plant something you all really love xxx Hope you are having a wonderful Monday xxx love to all xxx
I admire this family so much. None of the “drama” happening at some other chateaus - just hard work, family unity and sincere goals. Your vlogs always make my heart smile. Sorry I missed the premier today. Next time. More great progress today! I can’t believe how fast Jonathan is growing! Can you move the tree to another place in the garden so Ashley can keep one of the original trees and the view is preserved? ❤️
Thank you so much 🥰
Agree 100%
@Anton thank you so much 🙏🥰🥰
Which chateau(s) have drama???!!! I never see any drama! Do tell!
Taking down those trees and digging up the deep, deep roots is a huge job. They are doing an incredible job.
Thank you ☺️
Missing Tony, hope he’s ok. He worked so hard himself and Ash at the start. We miss seeing him.
Tony was visiting family at the time 😊
Loved seeing Jonathan again😊 Hoping Tony is well haven't seen him in awhile. I love gardening and look forward to Tracey's restorations of the formal garden.
I wish we could be told about Tony. It all seems so odd. Health? Relationship? Miss him.
Tony is well he was visiting family 😊😊👍
@@Tracyhort522 thank you Tracy. I’m so relieved that all is well.❤️
Your young fella is such a sweet young man. He works so hard I am really impressed with him.
As a long time gardener who has at times run into this kind of situation with old established trees and a new garden plan, I agree with many of the other comments. Take it out now while you have the chance rather than regretting it after you’ve planted a new garden and then decide it has to go. Great work Guys.
You won't lack for firewood for some time. The formal garden will look fabulous. Excellent work.
Yes it’s great for the future 😍
Sometimes you have to wipe the slate clean, so don't feel bad, especially when you apparently have more then enough fruit trees. I can't wait to see what you all will create for a formal garden
Thank you ☺️
Doing a great job with cleaning up the old trees, to get back to a formal garden as it was, I do agree that the tree should come out
Thank you ☺️
You should take the tree out. Like Tracey said. In the formal garden it will look out of place. By the way your Chateau is looking real fine now . With everything you do, the Chateau is growing into a beautiful Lady! Keep up the great work and looking forward to seeing your next project.
As a passionate gardener I can’t wait to see this video.
It’s getting exciting getting the garden sorted 🥰
So glad the walls were not damaged and the job went well. Clean up will be a task, but what hasn't been a task up until now. You guys rock! You take on every task with positivity for the future of the chateau and property. Always impressive and always turns out great!
Thank you Lisa 😊
It’s lovely to see Jonathan again. He’s such a handsome lad.⭐️ Miss his input though!☺️ 🧡💛🌞
The garden is starting to take shape. It's never a good feeling to take trees down, but sometimes it is necessary. Thank you for your thoughtful and gentleness in getting this done. ❤️❤️
Thank you ☺️
Hi everyone, Great day in the garden,i agree, with you Tracy, the old tree has,had its day,I’d start a fresh with a beautiful tree,in the new formal 🌳 garden! Oh my goodness Ash,my heart was in my mouth, when the tree came down on the wall! Thank goodness it was okay 🫣 Take care lots of love 🥰💕
Thank you ☺️
It's an interesting trade off you're doing: taking out self-seeded trees from the formal garden and replanting the orchard. I hadn't truly appreciated the size of the garden until that aerial drone shot. It's going to be so lovely when curated. I'm afraid that little scrubby tree won't quite fit in unless it's part of the design. Lovely seeing friends, neighbors and Jonathan pitch in with enthusiasm. Oh, and a little shout out to the beautiful patch of flowers the digger saved!
Thank you ☺️
Agreed! The sight of that cold steel claw gingerly saving that little clump of cheery fragile spring flowers...very satisfying to a gardener!☺️
@@TheBereangirl It was such a lovely moment that encapsulates the entire project: Restoration and reformation.
Out with the old, in with the upgraded new.
Thank you ☺️
When it comes to owning a property like your, sometimes you have to be like a surgeon, you can’t get sentimental. When things need removing, OUT they come or else they are a detriment to anything else that might be trying to flourish. Good job well done. I’d love to know how much Jonathan has grown since the move. He looks so bonny and healthy, (and Happy) 👏💕👏💕👏 xxxalex in Florida
Since the gardens had been neglected for decades and if it’s me I take it down and redesign the garden to look amazing for the years to come As always y’all have done an amazing job breathing new life in the chateau ❤ Sending love from West Central Texas 💜
Thank you ☺️
Look at them go. The feel of spring is in the air.
Tracey has the best back in the business
Yes get rid of that weird tree. Great job everyone 😊
I vote for taking out the little tree. Can't wait for this years outside transformation.
Thanks Tommy 😊
Wow, what a big job. I think you all are doing amazing. Johnathan seemed very happy. I agree, I think you should take out that little tree as well. I am so happy that your friends came to help. We are lost without good friends, and one can never have enough of them.
Thank you ☺️
I am for team "Take-'er-Owt". A fresh start will allow the entire walled garden to mature as a whole.
Thank you ☺️
Excellent decision to take out those trees 💚
How wonderful it will be to see the the walled garden come to life. Huge job clearing all the trees.
Thank you 🙏 😊
I must say your vlog is really a work of art . Great videography !
Thank you so much ☺️
That was epic stump removal and tree felling. Have to agree with the remove the scrappy tree. Thank you for sharing.
Time is up for that tree! Guys. I agree, better away to the gappy Park in the sky. My Love to all your family.
Thank you ☺️
Despite the mess now, I am sure the garden will look really lovely after the all the hard work by Ash, Tracey, Terry, Tony, Jonathan and 🐶Patrick. Who knows, you may find another hidden tunnel still in the garden with further digging and exploring🤫.
Great to see the excess trees being removed. Always sad to see them go, but like you said, these were self seeded. Glad to see the walls being preserved too. You guys have done such an amazing job on the chateau and the grounds. Fun to see what you get up to. Thank you so much for taking us along with you....xo
Thank you so much Jane 😊
FIREWOOD
Johnathon was very smart to run off in the beginning to get away from all that hard work. Looking forward to seein what you all do with it
Great work! I love that y'all saved that pretty clump of snow drops. Continued admiration for the hard work, positive spirit, and care you're taking with this property.
For what it is worth, I would keep that last tree. I would trim it on one side, emphasize the angle, almost as an arch. Judicious pruning over the years could see it grow into a star of the garden, a large bonsai. Well done to the family. Amazing what hard work can accomplish.
Thank you yes that was the idea 🥰
All together now…..bye tree. Seriously, if the goal is a formal garden that poor tree has got to go. Love your videos…keep them coming.
Plenty of fire wood. Keep up the great work
This garden is going to be spectacular! I vote take the tree out. a clean slate is best to start with and you can plant trees to frame the chateau that would frame it. 💕
Thank you 😊
I hate taking trees down but I am a realist and do have a masters in Landscape Architecture, that tree needs to come out. Do like I do and plant a few extra to make up for it. A blank slate is the best thing for you. You can design in plantings to frame the view and the chateau. I do look forward to your videos. You are doing amazing work!
Thank you ☺️
You asked about taking out the last tree in the formal garden. I vote to take it out.
Thanks Pat 😊
Take out the weird little tree for sure. Start with a clean slate for an appropriate formal garden. Great job guys! Bravo!
Thank you ☺️
Keep her! Like saving a child's first locks. Treasure what she was. Treat it like a birthmark. Give her a bit of whimsy, like a tiny kidneybean- shaped garden underneath, with potted rare herbs, antique apothecary herbs, a medicinal area that can bear and hold plants, planted assymetrically...like when the Amish make gorgeous quilts, but they always include one tiny section that is contrary, because only our creator makes perfection. And you'd also be honoring the chateau's past. (Can you tell I am a saver?)...Much love to Fab-Five! Stay safe...
Another great vlog. So much hard work for you all. I think the tree has to go, formal garden requires symmetry. Happy to see you moved the snowdrops, I think they are the promise of spring. Love to everyone from County Durham xxx
It's amazing to see the difference in the garden, so much hard work put into it. You guys are Miracle workers
Thanks Jerry 😊
Look at it this way. The tree had a life, and when the chateau was falling down, the tree offered green hope for the future. But its day is over and should make way for the beautiful symmetrical garden you are planning. That will set the chateau off and give it the setting it needs.
So nice to be outside again isn’t it. My two cents worth regarding the little tree is, if your goal is a formal garden it definitively needs to go. It’s kind of scruffy and growth habit isn’t in keeping with a formal space. So enjoyed this video as I love anything regarding gardening. Good luck whatever decision you make.
Thank you 🙏
Exciting to see you clear the land making ready for a beautiful formal walled garden! It will be perfect!
Thanks Tura 😊
Wow - that tree was huge...Well Done all of you!!
Thanks Chris 😊
Your can do spirit is amazing, it is so inspiring, and you get so much done! Love seeing what you, you’re family and friends will tackle next. This inspires me to get things done on my house, on a much smaller scale lol
Another brilliant episode alot of work done again its going to be fabulous...I say remove the tree start a fresh x
Thank you ☺️
It's good to have wonderful friends. Sure looks like a load of work. Little Johnathan looks happy and healthy... such a blessing to have around. Blessings to you and your family. If the little tree had a twin on the other side... I'd say ... Keep it... but as it is... it looks so lonely... I dunno maybe that's me... but I'd say now it should go... perhaps you can plant more trees elsewhere to make up for the ones you took down...
Thank you ☺️
Most people have a cell phone as an extension of their arm, Tracy has a shovel. 😅
Love the logo and the new intro!
Thank you ☺️
One of my fave Vlogs from Chateau de Lalacelle - fast paced, lots of content, great music. I have said it before, this is one of the hardest working crews of the Chateau Vlogs and want CDLL to know it doesn't go un-noticed. Sadly Ash, I think the single tree has to go - perhaps you can plant another one in its honor somewhere other than the formal garden? It's all truly looking amazing.
Thank You 😊 😊
Thank you so so much 🙏🥰🥰🥰
Great job, lots of hard hard work. A clean slate for the new garden would be nicer. Can't wait to see what and the garden designers come up with. Please stay well, hugs from USA
Thank you ☺️
Hi Ash, Tracy, Terry and Tony not forgetting Jonathan. We are back from our trip to Spain, and can’t wait to see what you all have in store for us tonight . We missed you last week, but caught up with you on your visit to the brocante when we got home, by the way hope the spelling of the French Flea Market is correct! The pieces you bought there are wonderful, but the table will take some extraordinary skills( which you have) to put back into good order. We both hope that you are all fit and well and send our love to you all, as usual. ❤❤
Hello, hope you had a wonderful time is Spain, glad you got caught up with the videos 🥰🥰 will see you later in the chat 🥰🥰
About the last tree that Terry wants to take out. Mother knows best. Take it out. Start over with the new gardens. They will be beautiful 😻
Thank you ☺️
Plenty of firewood from those trees and after the current wind storms makes since to cut down anything that could damage. A new space and clean slate to start the new project . Thanks for the update. 🧡🌲🌷⚘🌾🥀🌹🌺🌲
Thank you so much ☺️
Regarding the lone tree, take it out. It won't fit in the formal garden and it is blocking your view which is absolutely stunning. Can't wait to see the plan for the formal garden.
Thanks Anna 😊
I'm of the mind to remove the little tree. Great work.
Thank you ☺️
It should go for sure..replace with low slow growing pretty Japanese maples in a variety of colours for dappled shade
Thank you ☺️
Take it out!! Start fresh! There are plenty of old trees on the property 🎉
Thank you ☺️
Loved the vlog. You guys are the best. Ash and Terry I think that tree in the garden has to go. I don’t think you’ll miss it once the new landscaping is in.
Thank you ☺️
I love watching you working in the sunshine. I'm still getting snow here. I want to get out in my garden too😔
Thanks Cecilia! Hope it warms up soon for you! 😊
Loved the quality of this video today as well as the intro. I think the tree should go at it's not in the centre of the stairs when you look up at the chateau. It would be good to have a central piece like a fountain, statue, or weeping ornamental trees and then the garden works it way out from this. Lots of box hedging and pathways on either side, creating symmetry.
Love this channel and watching your amazing progress! I may have missed him but I haven't seen Tony for a while - hope he is ok? Love from (not so) sunny Devon x
Oh and I have bought some pillows... 😃
The tree is past its prime. A clean slate let's you put your Stamp on the Chateaus revival.
Thank you ☺️
Take out the last tree and start with a blank canvas. I would get rid of the grass on the upper level, close to the house. Put down gravel instead. You can put nice bistro table sets and umbrellas out there or a large dining table for your guests to enjoy. The lower, formal garden may look good with a lawn in the center and flower beds along the walls.
Take everything out , clean slate ... Ash take the tree and plant far away 🤣🤣🤣
Oh I know it was hard seeing the trees come down, but it looks so open and just gives you the space to start planting and arranging your new garden. Funny to see Jonathon running around and jumping after the tree went down. Looks like my daughter, just being a happy go lucky kid! can't wait to see the new plantings to go in!
Thank you ☺️
Did I miss something? I haven't seen Tony in the last couple of videos Is he on Holliday?
You'll need the firewood Good job!!
The tree is best taken out. It will be in the way for the formal garden.
Thank you ☺️
You guys are the best. I love to watch you work together. It reminds me when me, my husband, and two teenage boys cleared land to build our log home. I know about stumps too,. Patricia Lewis from Texas.
Well done all 👍 preparation is key for the garden.
Thank you so much, it definitely is 🥰🥰🥰
going to be amazing watching this project coming together.
Thank you ☺️
With your explanation, it makes good sense to cut down the trees. I would have been perplexed about it if you had not told us why. Thanks for being clear.
Thank you ☺️
I agree with so many, as hard as it is to chop trees down in this situation it would spoil the formal garden.
So much work and yet so satisfying! Is Tony okay? We hardly see him anymore. I hope I haven't missed something
Thank you 🙏 😊 yea he’s fine 😊
I was wondering the same thing I was thinking of Tony
I was just going to ask the same thing. I’m happy to hear he’s okay. Miss his face in the videos though.
You've done amazing work on the grounds, I'd have to say that last tree needs to go, even with its lovely out stretched branch. You need a clear/ symmetrical view to the lovely Château 😍
Thank you ☺️
I’m so envious, you can grow so many trees and plants that just wouldn’t last the winter here in Ontario, Canada. Today we have a snow storm mixed with freezing rain. It is warm @2 degrees C. A fine spring day! Looking forward to seeing the gardens
Love what you are doing to the garden. I would leave the tree for now. You will know better once your have your design.
Thank you ☺️
Good morning can’t wait for it😊❤❤❤❤❤
Hello, will see you soon 🥰🥰
I’d take the last tree out. It’s pretty old and it may die soon anyway. It will also mess with your symmetry. Great job!
The tree should go. I enjoy sharing your journey. You are creating a beautiful restoration of this amazing chateau. ❤❤❤
Thank you ☺️
It is hard work, but you do need the blank canvas to start. The little tree must come out if you have to remove it later it will spoil all around it with getting roots out etc. Just think of all the trees you have already planted plus more you intend to plant, din't feel guilty. The rule here in Queensland Oz is.... for every tree you remove you have to plant three in its place. Tracy your love for the outdoors shows, and your love for Jonathan. Keep up the good work, and love seeing the smiling faces. 💕🇦🇺
Thank you so much, yes we will be planting many more trees 🥰
We are celebrating Evan’s 11th birthday this weekend. I may miss the live chat depending on where we are in the mountains of North Carolina today. ❤
Hope you have a lovely time and will see you in the next chat🥰
Just stopped my project in time to watch you and yours. ❤
Hope you enjoyed Char 😊
Ash I don't like cutting down trees either but I think the little tree in this vlog the last tree you showed us needs to come down. The garden is going to look beautiful I'm sure with flowering trees and plants that bloom, I can't wait to see what you will be doing in the garden. Hugs to all of you, Kathy USA
