Symptoms of Vitamin B 12 Deficiency are variable. Most people develop fatigue, brain fog, and shortness of breath.
Vitamin B-12 deficiency is linked to several health issues. Anemia, depression, nerve damage, memory issues, and much more. The two most common symptoms linked to B-12 deficiency are depression and fatigue.
Serum vitamin B-12 levels is not a good indicator for vitamin B12 deficiency. Functional medicine doctors typically evaluate vitamin B-12 using more advanced lab testing.
Causes of vitamin B12 deficiency include poor diet, GI dysfunction, gluten sensitivity, and many different types of medications to include, those given for heartburn, diabetes, and infection.
The only foods with vitamin B12 are found in animals. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds contain no B12.

  • Every Pyschiatrist should watch this video. My brother was treated with 4 psych meds when all he needed was b12 shots. He suffered from pernicious anemia. I am so upset about what the doctors did to my brother. I will write about it some day.

  • I am the medical director of a clinic in DC and we do all kinds of IV nutrition therapy and hormone balancing. The result of most disease is poor diet and food allergies that wear out the body and create serious imbalances. I love videos like this from Osbourn and others as this is what I do and learn a lot from others in the same field.

    • I am homozygous for A(1298)C MTHFR and platelets are on the low side of normal. I take Pepcid twice daily. Wow, I learned a lot here.

  • I have intrinsic factor antibodies (pernicious anemia). My deficiency was missed by doctors twice and was told I just needed antidepressants. I asked for a full blood testing including vitamins etc and it came back I was severely deficient. I sent my results from 10 years earlier to my aunt, who is a nurse, and she told me to ask for intrinsic factor antibodies test as my results from 10 years were low to her (even though technically it was in the normal range, it was two away from deficient). It came back positive for antibodies and I'm on injections for life thankfully.

  • When first diagnosed w/ B12 deficiency, I was located in lower Appalachia. What was interesting at that time, and still is, was the doctor told me a marked number of women developed this deficiency, in Appalachia. I'd only been here a year.   • Thank you Dr. Osborne, that was one of the most compact and informative videos I've seen in years. What's needed is a book, or maybe a downloadable pdf, which contains this information and the same level of detail for all the other vitamins and mineral that humans need. I've spent the last two years trying to piece this altogether in order to correct some personal health problems. If this information was available as a single download, I could have had my self on the right track in a matter of weeks, not years!! Carry on the great work.

    • @phoenix Ghe This is a fact. of the over 100 vegetarians they tested the vegans had a 52% deficiency even with vitamin usage. 26% with vegetarians. This was in Germany, you can imagine how much worse the american vegans are health-wise. "Results: Of the 3 groups, the vegans had the lowest vitamin B-12 status. In subjects who did not consume vitamins, low holotranscobalamin II (< 35 pmol/L) was found in 11% of the omnivores, 77% of the LV-LOV group, and 92% of the vegans.     • @goku son So youn have to take high doses, I think he mentioned 15 mg (15,000 mcg), if I find 5000 mcg (5 mg) I take about 4 or 5. And I'm on carnivore diet at the moment to reduce fatty liver. I have absorption issues due to fistula and colostomy and duodenal ulcer and prilosec. So, you have to flood your system with B12 for a decent amount to get in.

  • I had helobacter pylori and was given beta blockers. My optic nerve started flashing. I had my own fireworks display (circular annulus) Then my hand went numb, and I couldn't control my temper. My doctor nailed it. VitB12. 8 years later, still got a problem. Mostly with doctors. They are sooo stubborn. Every one I go to wants me to have lab tests, even with my history before them.

  • B12 deficiency has more to do with your digestive health and for most of the deficiencies, it is the digestive health which is the primary culprit which most people ignore and particularly will doctors never tell you as it affects multi million dollar industry called hospitals and pharmaceutical companies.

    • You are correct. You could be eating all the b12 foods and b12 supplements in the world, but if you have a weak digestion, you are not absorbing much.

  • Wow, my right big toe went numb and nobody could or would tell me why, gave me ant-inflammatory meds like gabapentin or Ibuprophen, I didn't take them and it got worse (nobody stressed to me that those could have saved or reversed the numbness if caught in time)... now every once in a while I feel sharp pains running down my toe and I can imagine (a picture of a branch of inflamed nerves throbbing) into my toe. Nobody told me it could be a vitamin deficiency! .... I am not diabetic, I am healthy as a horse other than being a bit over weight.. I thought it might be pressure on the nerves in my back due to lower disc bulging but I took a multivitamin for active women and the pain in my toe reduced in a day.... I think I have some investigating to do! Thanks so much for the video!

  • Very interesting I have been experiencing what I thought was vertigo I heard if vertigo last for more than 20 minutes it’s not vertigo. After two ER visits and one ENT visit and two cat scans a RN told me I may have Ménière’s disease. After watching many KZhead videos I felt I had an autoimmune issue attacking my inner ear/balance causing severe nausea for days; all as a result of B12 deficiency. I’ve been taking B12 and Flavinoid so far so good!

  • Do all people with deficiency show symptoms? I've been vegan for 25 years but show no negative symptoms. I have too much energy and am very positive. By reading the latest medical research I have learned that the balance of our intestinal flora plays huge role in the absorption of B12 and that can cause depression. So it's not just the food you ingest but the environment in your body that allows it to digest and absorb optimally

  • Thanks Doc! That was quick and painless. I am sure that I have 3 of those problems. Chicken and fish are the foods I eat, but don't eat red meat. I hope that not a problem. I will try the B-12 today. My pancreas keep telling me like Clint Eastwood, Go head, make my day, so sugar and bread are off my diet, so I am willing to try anything to get off the Nexium.

  • I really appreciate your video. I have been suffering from the main symptoms you have described and was suspicious that I may be lacking from B12 deficiency in some way. I am vegetarian and I understand why you suggested meat. For most people, that is all they understand and is the quickest and easiest solution. I am not saying it is the RIGHT one for an individual, and especially for the animal. Those who do more research come to understand that it is the bacteria that actually provide the vitamin that it comes from not only the animals but from the ground, soil. water et cetera as another viewer pointed out. But what is the likelihood that someone will start eating raw unwashed veggies? Or drink unprocessed water? For the average person, near zero. I don't like the harsh words toward this man. He is speaking to the masses and this is some great information to get started with. He does suggest the right types of supplements, that can be used INSTEAD of meat, which is what I prefer. But I do have a question if anyone has bothered to read this far: what is the shelf life and how do you best protect methylcobolamin when stored? Also, what is the best dosage? Does it need to be taken with any other vitamins, minerals or food to promote Bioavailability? Alkalizing foods or anything? Some insight into these areas would really make a great follow up to this video.

    • tell that to my NO SICKNESS in FIVE FULL YEARS! I work around kids, daily, and they get the flu, coughs, colds, etc., yet, I haven't been ill one day in five years. So much for being robbed. NO SICKNESS...think about that. I bet all the meat eaters have had the flu in the past two years. Why is that? Because they keep listening to the hype concerning meat and protein. You're being BS'ed, just so that you know. There is a lady that is in her 70's. She looks like she's in her 20's, and she doesn't eat meat. Another one is in her 60's yet looks like she's in her 20s. She stopped eating meat 40 yrs ago. She's still alive, but she hasn't aged. Why is that? Vegetarians have increasingly shown that they age better than their meat eating counterparts, they feel ten times better, and they don't get sick as often. So much for the hype!

    • I don't think so, Matt. I have always eaten lots of veggies and fruits, but I also ate meat. It wasn't until I stopped eating the meat that I became healthier, and I stopped getting sick with flu and other viruses. I also don't take pro-biotics, nor a variety of supplements. I take three supplements, as vegetarians are often low on these particular ones. So, that can't be it, either. I always drank water from the tap, so again, that's not what's causing it, even though, recently, I began using distilled water. I tested the city's water and found that it had a ph level of 8.0, which is way too high. So, decided it's best to limit the minerals and chlorine in my system. However, the health benefits occurred long before that change.

  • Good afternoon. I was diagnosed with MS in May of 2012. After finally getting a second opinion, it "may" be something else. I have started b-12 injections in December 2013. To be honest until the day of my first b-12 injection, I felt was was fading away to a point of making plans for my funeral.     • yes... i was on the MS suspect too maannny years ago... but no evidence of it... then with my own research over time i figured it out... [full disclosure it was numerous other also - basically everything iron , vit D , magnesium etc.. but b12 was THE most specific link to MS related symptoms]

  • I had gastric bypass surgery 7 years ago. I am now extremely depressed, lethargic and fatigued. I have trouble with short term memory and get confused quite easily. I went to the Va hospital to get treated for hep-c, I had several blood test done and just found out that I have extremely low levels of b12, my doctor sais it was probably caused by the weight loss surgery. I can't wait to start feeling better; have not started the shots yet, Thanks Doc for the info.

  • I am curious what it means when the B12 is extremely high on a b12 blood test. My 15 yr old daughter's b12 was about 1700 on the last 2 tests we did, which were 6 months apart. She is taking a supplement with methycobalamin and 5-MTHF. A functional medicine practitioner we saw after the first test said that my daughter was methyl trapping, which is why I switched her b complex to contain both of the broken down forms of folate and b12. I thought excess B vitamins were excreted in the urine. I need to find out if she is actually deficient because her body cannot use the b12 she has or if she, indeed, is taking too much b12. When I had the first test done, I tested folate and homocysteine also. I know I should have done the MMA test, but our NP had no idea what that was, so he just ordered the other tests. Any ideas would be appreciated. My daughter has a chronic illness and she is pretty sick.

  • You can definitely have sufficient Vitamin B12 in your blood, but be deficient in your cells. As he says in his video, your blood doesn't use it, your cells do. Elevated homocysteine levels are a good sign you are deficient. He mentions a couple of other tests too. Google MTHFR and Vitamin B12 too.

    • Yeap. Folate and B12 deficiency can cause anemia. Unfortunately, we are only educated about iron deficiency.

  • We're all going to die of something whether we're vegan, vegetarian or otherwise. I chosse to be vegan because I feel so much better eating all fruits and vegetables that when I eat meats. Is it more healthy? I don't know nor do I care because it sure feels like it is. I've got more energy and I look better than I ever did on a meat diet. I really don't see why there is such a need for people to bash other people about what they choose to put into their own bodies.

  • Your video about vitamin B-5 deficiency first popped up after I searched for videos on how to help clear my son's acne. I was surprised by how many other symptoms of B-5 I am also currently experiencing. I got a bottle of pantothenic acid last night and I'm putting my entire family on it starting today. After I liked that B-5 video and subscribed (since as others have stated, you come across as an incredibly knowledgeable and caring doctor) the next video of yours to pop up was this one about vitamin B-12. Again- I am shocked at how many symptoms I have of a deficiency, but it all makes sense! I have low stomach acid, don't drink milk (it gives me congestion) and my total daily intake of food is 1200 -1500 calories a day so I guess I just don't get enough nutrition from the calories (a small person like me) eats. I do also eat kind of a lot of sugar. I'm one of those people who will have a fresh kale, spinach, pineapple juice, frozen strawberries and banana smoothie for breakfast, a baked sweet potato with steamed broccoli for dinner and the equivalent of a king sized chocolate bar in the middle of the day, along with about 4, 16 oz bottles of water throughout the day. I eat meat (usually chicken or fish) only once a week. So much for that being adequate! I won't launch into all the details but the last 4 years have been *incredibly* stressful with two devastating deaths in the family, having sudden and permanent falling outs with a couple of long term very close friends, my car being first vandalized by co-workers then broken into by local thieves in my driveway and having $5,000 worth of camera equipment stolen, working 60+ hours a week in a high pressure sales job for almost 4 years, losing my job, a prolonged upper respiratory infection after losing my medical insurance, moving twice in one year after a horrible divorce, breaking my foot in a sport accident, and well, you get the idea! It's no wonder I never wanted to get out of bed and barely have the energy to function in a given day. It never occurred to me that a vitamin/ mineral deficiency could hinder my coping with all that stress. I start on B-12 today as well. I took upwards of 5 vitamins a day during my pregnancies including folic acid, omega fatty acids, Iron, B complex and a multi vitamin, but I pretty much stopped taking any vitamins after my last child stopped nursing. My mistake! Thank you so much for your wonderful videos and keep up the good work!!!😎👍❤️ (One tiny request: I noticed when you said Doctor in this video you always said "he" or "ask him". It's a small thing, but it would make you look like a more open minded and considerate person to alternate with "she" and "ask her", referring to the excellent women physicians out there as well.   • Dr Osborne, what is the recommended daily amount for B12 deficiency for a person with gluten sensitivity? When you say B12 comes from meat, are you referring to all meat or specific animal/fish? What is the recommended amount to eat a day? I'm not much of a beef eater as it usually just sits in my gut for days and clogs my intestines. Thank you.

  • I was diagnosed with PA about 20 years ago, at the age of 36 The first thing my doctor asked me was if I was vegetarian/vegan. Although, not a big fan of beef or pork, I do eat chicken and fish. By the time I was diagnosed, I couldn't walk, use my hands and was in a fog. My doctor suggested that it might be PA, so gave me that vibration test, then a Shillings test. Mine was so low, he wanted to put me directly in the hospital. I have been taking shots (cyanocobalamine) for these 20 years. I'm interested to know more about this other medicine. Thanks

  • I have a book on healthy nutrition and a list of various diseases written by a very distinguished doctor and nutritionist in my country (who is by the way "not" a vegan), and this doctor openly proposes that we can derive "all" necessary nutrients from plants (carbohydrates, proteins, fats, all vitamins and minerals), and although he lists meat, eggs and dairy as an example of foods that contain particular nutrient he mentions, he still dismisses these foods and proposes that proteins should exclusively by derived from plant based foods like grains etc. It also says in the book that besides meat, soy and mushrooms contain vitamin B12 as well. This is not to say that we don't need to take vitamin B12 supplement when on plant based diet but stating that "only" meat contains the mentioned vitamin is a false information.

    • Animal cells don't produce b12. The only way an animal can get b12 is either from something they ate or from the healthy bacteria in their gut, which is also our main source of b12. Fruits and vegetables promote b12 producing bacteria in our gut, and certain foods like spirulina, chlorella, and yeast contain b12. Eating meat actually inhibits b12 absorption due to it promoting unhealthy gut bacteria and its high acidity, which is why over 40% of Americans have a b12 deficiency. There are a number of factors that can cause a lack of b12 absorption and if dietary changes don't work then b12 injections are the best way to go. It is completely false that meat contains any nutrient that can not be attained from a plant source.

    • habadashery2009 You actually got that completely backwards, brewers yeast, fermeneted soy, seaweed, spirulina, etc are actually contain B12 analogs called cobamides that block intake of and increase the need for true B12. To learn more, Google this study "Pseudovitamin B(12) is the predominant cobamide of an algal health food, spirulina tablets."

Also virtually all modern animal products are devoid of b12, now b12 is either injected into animals, put into their feed, or animal products are enriched with b12. There are also many variables that effect b12 absorption and eating animal products won't guarantee b12 absorption. Currently over 40% of Americans have a b12 deficiency.

  • I haven't had meat/eggs since 1972. No dairy since 1990. Recently had B12 test and my doctor is happy with result. It is all genetic. One size does not fit all. I have been taking b12 cyanocobalamin since about 95.

  • Dr. I'm a vegan & there's other sources of getting B12. For example, the moringa leaf is very rich in B12, and is higher than red meat. So I don't agree totally with your information, but will keep your information in mind to ensure that I'm meeting my B-12 requirements.

  • I dont think the answer is eating meat or more meat as meat is bad for you in other ways. Many meat eaters are also deficient in b12. If eating meat is no guarantee and testing levels at the Doctor is unreliable then maybe it's just easier to have an b12 injection anyway - it wont do any harm.

    • I was on the paleo diet for over a year and still Vit B deficient. I stopped eating wheat 4 years ago. Grain-free for at least 2 years. But I have Candida overgrowth. I haven't listened to the entire presentation (listening now), but I know that Candida Overgrowth is getting in the way of absorbing nutrients from my food. I've done everything to get rid of it, but I cannot. The next thing is that I will be removing my mercury amalgams. I'm 1/2 done...I had 6 fillings that required crowns/overlays and 4 that can be refilled. Anyone else have any success stories after removing mercury amalgams?

    • Shonda Hector Hi Shonda, I avoid m. amalgams like the plague. It's a good thing that you are removing them. *Be sure that your dentist is keeping you safe(dam, etc.) while they are removed. That aside, I had challenges with candida as well and probiotics have helped me immensely.

    • Roxy Moz Yes, I've been on probiotics FOREVER! I change them up too. I make my own sauerkraut also. I just have a REALLY bad case of CANDIDA. I've tried all the diets: GAPS/SCD, Paleo, Candida Free...currently on BodyEcology so that I'm loading up on the non-starchy veggies and ocean veggies, about to add coconut kefir again!...this is a REAL CHALLENGE...also taking anti-fungals and even recently added prescription Nystatin and B-12 shots + other supplements.
