Can a person be "cured" of Type 2 Diabetes? Dr. Sarah Hallberg provides compelling evidence that it can, and the solution is simpler than you might think.
Dr. Sarah Hallberg is the Medical Director of the Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program at IU Health Arnett, a program she created. She is board certified in both obesity medicine and internal medicine and has a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology. She has recently created what is only the second non-surgical weight loss rotation in the country for medical students. Her program has consistently exceeded national benchmarks for weight loss, and has been highly successful in reversing diabetes and other metabolic diseases. Dr. Hallberg is also the co-author of www.fitteru.us, a blog about health and wellness.

    • Type 1 diabetes is when your body is allergic to the cells that produce insulin. With DM1 you have to stick yourself with insulin no matter what. DM2 however, yes, that is essentially a carbohydrate allergy.

      @ellenorbjornsdottir1166@ellenorbjornsdottir11665 жыл бұрын
    • @@ellenorbjornsdottir1166 from what I've read or heard others say, type 1 is actually the cells in the pancreas which are supposed to produce insulin CAN'T for some reason, not that your body is allergic to the cells. And the more someone reduces their carb intake, the less insulin they need to take. Keto is still the ideal diet for someone with type 1, to minimize their required insulin as much as possible.

I watched this video and subsequently implemented the doctor's advice in my lifestyle. Fast forward to February 13, 2018. After recording all my blood sugar readings it showed of average range of 91 to 101. My doctor's first word to me were "it's a miracle" you are no longer a diabetic. I can't go back to eating like before, I just need to keep eating and exercising the way I have been the last six weeks. A VERY BIG THANK YOU , to Doctor SARAH HALBERG!....Folks it can be done.

    • Joe, Very inspiring story! I have a question: how did you actually monitor your sugar levels so that you could slowly decrease insulin? I'm in a similar situation here, have been eating low-carb for about two weeks now, but my bloodsugar levels don't really want to go down UNLESS I take the usual insulin shots ..., I mean, all in all, they're a little bit lower than before and, what's important, I no longer have these spikes, these roller coaster rides with my bloodsugar. How did you do it? Thanks for your time!

  • I am so sorry to hear that Dr. Hallberg died from lung cancer in 2022. I saw this video in 2017 when I was recovering from two kinds of endometrial cancer. At the same time, I was diagnosed with diabetes. By following her advice, I reversed the diabetes and lost 40 pounds. I no longer am diagnosed with diabetes. Actually my doctor said that she considers me "a diet-controlled diabetic". I've also been free of cancer for six years. It's not just what I eat, it's also getting more exercise. I moved to Mexico and live in a small mountain town without a car. I walk everywhere. I never got into eating baked goods made with non-grain based flours, but I'm going to try that. I usually break my fast with a breakfast of either quinoa or some kind of eggs, usually with lots of veggies. It doesn't spike my blood sugar the way that oatmeal, yogurt and other things I used to have for breakfast did. I do eat avocadoes every day. So wonderful to live in Michoacan where they are plentiful year-round. I also have locally-made butter, which is the best. My advice to anyone with cancer or diabetes is to take it as a wake-up call that you need to take better care of your health.

In addition, I’ve lost 130 pounds and I’m down in my weight to where I was 50 years ago when we got married. After hospital discharge in 2011, a friend/diabetic educator told me to IGNORE the American Diabetes Association recommendations or I would be fat first and deceased in less than 10-years. Because of his advice and my dedication to monitoring the food I eat, my semi-annual Ac1 is 5.3. I no longer have hunger pains, no longer experience food cravings, my insulin requirements are minimal. Knowledge is power!

    @sibeez@sibeez9 жыл бұрын
    • SI Beez That is great! Imagine if you didn't have this friend, like 99% of other newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetics. They eat ADA-recommended "healthy" whole grains, guaranteeing them a life of diabetes, deteriorating health, and expensive insulin and medication. And all it takes to stop it is a simple change in diet. The ADA, no doubt, is a criminal organization that does not want this word to get out because it would almost put them out of business (there are not enough Type 1's to sustain their bloated organization). A pox on them.

      @rubygreta1@rubygreta19 жыл бұрын
    • Eric K Not criminal. Don't put on a tinfoil hat. Face reality. The ADA have simply acted "by committee" to draw up "guidelines" based on an incomplete, in fact almost non-existent, data base. There has been almost NO significant human (clinical) research on dietary effects on diabetes either funded or published in the last 30 years. Blame the NIH and the various private funding organization (yes, including the ADA) for not supporting this type of research.

When I was in my teens, the ADA started getting afraid of fat and suggesting a larger and larger proportion of carbohydrates for diabetics -- and I listened. Decades of skimmed milk and breakfast cereals and black coffee and rice and steamed wheat berries... then the diabetic retinopathy and the neuropathy and impotence... the endless nagging from my doctors, the increased doses of insulin that ensured an inexorable gain of weight... You're very fortunate that you've learned the right way early on. I've been on low-carb-high-fat for about six years and it's helped a lot but much irreversible damage has been done.

  • I am not diabetic but I am insulin resistant. I have struggled for months following the advice of most medical professionals. I finally decided to try something more dramatic. I became a carnivore. I cut out all sugar and carbs. I would have less than 10g of carbs daily from cheese. I lost 35lbs. I am now transitioning to a keto style of eating where I can have low carb veggies. I know it was drastic, but it was what I needed, and now, as I add foods back into my diet, I can see if I have any sensitivities I may not have known about. I didn't know it, but asparagus makes me feel extremely bloated, and I don't tolerate it. It has been the best thing I ever did for myself. Quiting sugar and refined carbs has given me the freedom to feel good again. To anyone who thinks that they can't give up sugar... it is easier than you think. I also can't afford things like xylitol and erythritol and my country produces sugar. A head of lettuce in the grocery store that only lasts two meals is $4 US, 1kg of rice is less than $2 US and lasts five meals. When you consider that I don't make much money and I have other things to do with my income, it's easier to just buy the food that makes that possible, as I reason that all I need is fuel to keep me going to achieve my goals. Then, I overeat for obvious reasons and the vicious cycle continues.

I no long even want the damn things any more, because I know how well this worked for me. If I want to snack, olives, cheese and salami are so much more satisfying than chips, candy, pastries etc. Best yet, the snack urge goes way down when not eating carbs. There are enough other good foods to get you through the rest of your life. You/we do not need any of the old favorites, because new (healthy) favorites arise. And, never be afraid to turn down a carb just to be polite. I just say "Thanks, but my doctor forbids this for me, and s/he has been right so far." People accept that you are making the effort and everyone who has seen the newer, slimmer you will support you. So, just dare to commit yourself, which means don't cheat. Use the gains in your health to stay on the right path. Best wishes.

Since then, I've made incredible progress. I started at 181 lbs, and now I'm down to 146 lbs. As a lifelong vegan, I realized that my Asian diet, which included a lot of rice, combined with my lack of exercise, contributed to my type 2 diabetes. But things have turned around for me. I now have oatmeal for breakfast and lunch, drink plenty of water every day, and strive to achieve 6000 steps daily. I also incorporate 30 minutes of exercise, burning around 100-200 calories per session. After 8 months of determination and hard work, I am thrilled to say that my A1C has dropped to 5.2. I never thought I would be able to achieve such amazing results without even having to poke my finger for blood tests. I've been following a low-carb diet since my diagnosis, and it has made a world of difference. I want to share my story to inspire others. Yes, type 2 diabetes can be reversed! • During the pandemic, I was consuming 500 grams of sugar per day give or take. Mostly sweet tea and cola. It got to the point where I could hardly function every day because of how sick I felt. I assumed I was having heart issues, possibly kidney issues, or liver damage. Maybe cancer. I wasn't sure what it was so I finally decided to begin a "self diagnosis experiment" where I quit consuming any sugars or carbs of any kind and begin intermittent fasting 16/8. The sugar and especially caffeine withdrawal was horrific. Blinding headaches and nausea. After about three days, mostly in bed, the headaches started to go away and the energy I began to feel came back like I hadn't felt in at least 5 years. Before, it was all I could do to stay awake after eating a meal. That went away almost immediately. I am now literally in a recovery process from how sick I was making myself due to my strong addiction to sugar and caffeine. VITAMIN D3 (50ng/ml) + Chromium makes an enzyme called oxalic acid reductase that converts oxalic acid to lactic acid. They should try at least 5000 UI vitamin and add chromium. Most enzymes and proteins made by vitamin D3 hormone upregulation are at the vitamin D3 blood level @50ng/ml. Metformin and Citrate chelate oxalates. They should try the vitamin D3 (4,000 UI) and chromium. Chromium is expected to be deficient as a porphyria develops in the autistic that have high oxalic acid levels and low vitamin D3 status based on the lack of glutathione which removes heavy metals from the body. They should try chromium 200 mcg along with the D3 to remove oxalic acid by converting it to lactic acid. It would make for a very interesting study is to gauge the porphyria (co-porphrin-1) in type 2 diabetics

At 56, I was a few years into an on-call 24/7 stressful job that didn't allow me the time to do anything besides work, I was tired, had gained 20 lbs., had pre-diabetes and my overall cholesterol was 223. I was offered statins by my doctor but, told him, no thank you, "I broke it. I need to fix it". I found your video. I ramped up slowly, doing low GPS when I couldn't do no GPS but, always aiming for and returning to the "no". I lost 15 lbs the first year and then a year later 5 more. Not huge numbers but, exactly what I needed. I eat so much healthier now. I have the energy to exercise again, no longer have pre-diabetes and my overall cholesterol is just under 200. Sooo grateful. And to discover this wonderfully passionate lady is no longer with us is just sad. Vale Sarah, we will never know how many lives you have both saved and will continue to save.

  • Love this, 25 years ago got diagnosed with type ll diabetes, I was young. I did the diabetes education, followed what they sId to a tea, when I went back to see my doctor she said my blood work was worse and indicated another medication. I was shocked since I was having drastic low blood sugars and told her I was afraid of more medication. She recommended a book called sugar busters which is low glycemic eating. My next A1c indicated I no lo get needed meds and I lost 25 lbs! Listen to this doctor, she is giving not just life saving advice, but it will give you a better quality of life!

  • I am going to the endocrinologist at 9:30am tomorrow. I hate going because I eat exactly what they tell me to eat and my sugar is still out of control. Then I get accused of cheating, which I don't. I am starting this tonight. I just gave the rice that I cooked to the chickens.

    • Hi No Name. Tell your endo that your insulin-resistant liver is cranking out the glucose, and that is keeping your fasting glucose and A1c high. It doesn't mean that you cheated at all. Unfortunately, apart from metformin (which isn't very effective) they don't have anything else to stop your liver from doing that.

  • I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes last October. I first viewed this video researching my diabetes at that time. It just made sense to me. I started looking into low carb diets and after 7 months of a high fat, low carb (HFLC) diet my endocrinologist has told me I no longer need my medications and she is amazed at how well I controlled my blood sugar levels. The side benefit is a loss of nearly 40 pounds. My high blood pressure has also been reduced dramatically. A HFLC diet has worked for me. I'm off medications, I feel great and I'm still shedding pounds. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Sarah.

I've lost 73 pounds My A1C dropped from over 10 down to 5.7 My Liver and Kidney function lab results are perfect for the first time in decades ALL OF MY BLOOD WORK AND URINE labs are 100% perfect (again for the first time in years). My Cholesterol and Triglycerides went from very high and dangerous to PERFECT: Triglycerides: From 194 to 68 LDL: From 136 to 95 My blood sugars went from the high 300s down to between 90 - 120 And I no longer need to take 7 drugs (yes, literally 7 drugs) per day.

    • That's amazing. I just recently started keto about a month ago, and I've lost around 33.6 lbs. I got concerned when I did my blood work in December and both my Triglycerides were high and my HDL was low. My A1C was at a 5.6%. Even though I wasn't considered diabetic, it was pretty obvious that I was heading in that direction. I was effectively the "pre-prediabetic" she talked about in the video. Since I started keto, I haven't feel this good since as long as I can remember. I have more mental focus. More energy. Just the way I feel is enough to want me to continue doing it. The other health benefits are just a plus, but they are important as well.

  • This completely ignores the relationship between the brain and gut. I love how people genetically predisposed to be one way make statements like their way is just so easy. Your gut literally makes you crave sugar. No getting around that. Fighting it is one of the hardest battles most people will ever face. No one is meant to fight hard battles every day successfully. Hard battles are once in a while things. If your solution is to send someone into battle every day all day you are setting them up for failure.
