How to make diseases disappear | Rangan Chatterjee | TEDxLiverpool

Can you actually make a disease disappear? Dr Rangan Chatterjee thinks you can. Often referred to as the doctor of the future, Rangan is changing the way that we look at illness and how medicine will be practised in years to come. He highlighted his methods in the groundbreaking BBC TV show, Doctor In The House, gaining him much acclaim from patients, his contemporaries and the media.
He is the author of the international bestseller, The 4 Pillar Plan - amzn.to/2yGfpuB which has been released in the USA and Canada under the title, How to Make Disease Disappear - amzn.to/2GstJf6 Rangan’s 15 years of clinical experience in the NHS includes internal medicine, immunology and general practice. A pioneer in the emerging field of progressive medicine, he also uses techniques from other disciplines he has studied including movement kinetics and functional medicine.
His own journey of learning was accelerated when family members fell ill and now Rangan is helping people to take control of their health by addressing the root causes of their illnesses, something which is often not achieved in 21st century health care, evidenced by a steady increase in the rates of chronic disease.
Rangan is a super-generalist, looking at as many factors as possible which can create wellness or illness. His talk is testament to how our thinking around the concept of disease needs to change to help form a map for future healthcare.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

  • I was on High blood pressure meds since my late 20s. By the time I was 50 , I was on 4 different meds and they wanted to increase the dosage but I declined. I decided to change what I eat after watching Barbara O'Neills lecture on High Blood pressure. I gave up sugar and milk and there was a tiny change in my BP . When i gave up eating wheat, oh boy, my blood pressure dropped to about 96/73 with meds. I decided to stop the meds for a week to see if it will rise, and it went up to 117/76 through out and stayed there. 2 years on it is still around 117/76 without taking my meds. I told my doctor but all he said was there was no scientific proof . Two years on , I am still avoiding wheat , added sugar and milk and I am so healthy, no headaches, no flu and my skin is glowing. I have added 20/4 intermittent fasting into the mix and I feel like I am 24 yrs and not 52. Wheat has been poisoning my body all along and all I get is drugs and more drugs which only puts paper on the cracks. Now I have fixed the cracks. Let food be thy medicine or else medicine will become thy food.

      @hellovanite@hellovanite7 жыл бұрын
    • Most natural medicine systems use two combined approaches, targeting pathogens and building resistence to pathogens. They use stress relief, nutrition, herbal medicines, manipulation etc to that end. TCM and Ayurveda are good examples. They are both holistic and cause based. Some modern drugs can also be useful if used with great care, although they rarely are.

    • I am a NP for over two decades and I am JUST learning from MY Docs, one of which is a ND, all about exactly THIS type of living. I have tossed my Methotrexate (Hydroquinone prior to that as I have NCFLD and need ZERO help being on a list for a new one, thanks though) and the supps and prolotherapy as well as what WE would think is an obscene amount of Vit D injected bimonthly, as well as the obvious such as Zinc, Benfotamine, K2, Vit C (a liquid brand that breaks the blood brain barrier) among others and my pain is subsiding and my RA is slowing down far quicker that I would have thought. I do believe that had I known about Naturopathic Doctors prior to choosing to be a RN and then get my Masters, I would have gone for my ND. My Naturopathic Doctor who works closely with my Pain Specialist, have, together, managed to get me down 30-40% off Pain meds as there is a plethora of “i medical issues” I am facing and some are side effects from C (One Doc is going to be published on findings, incredible what he has found from one Variant and possible two. He is a Genius and I do NOT say that about many if any Docs. Sorry. ;)). Coles notes, between the MD’s and the ND’s I have a team that is WILLING to play nice with each other and learn from each other with open minds. It is a beautiful thing when I think back to 5 years ago, I was going to start to “stockpile” as the pain was just too much for anyone to bear. Upon speaking to one of my Specialists, I mentioned this (a cry for help? LOL, of course) and his reaction was “It is NOT your time. You have far too much to teach others. If I thought it was I would not lie to you. If I thought there was nothing more anyone could do for you I would tell you that as well so your decision was informed. It is not. Do we agree? I am trusting you with MY life so I need you to know that. Yes or No?”. Clearly, it was Yes, I agree as I am still here and he and the others have kept every promise to me as none of them could have brought me to where I am now, alone. Each of them needed each other in order to learn or teach to get me to a place that I could stand and breathe and not have my first meal of the morning be a handful of meds. We all have so much to learn and Western or “Traditional” Medicine is not ALL of the answers. It is a cohesive team that we need for us to all be our best selves. Some are ready and some are not as ego has blocked them but with time, they will come around. Science will show that they must. I am living proof of that as Rangan has said that it is not all the answers in a single type of medicine. We MUST open our minds to what else we can learn. To think that Vit D deficiency 30-40 years ago was something that could put someone into a “sanitarium” just makes me so sad. To KNOW that Big Pharma has cured so many types of Cancer but that cure does not pay the bills so they continue to use what they have and charge incredible prices for it just to get rid of it and then MAYBE they will bring out the “magic Pill” is sickening. So much is kept from the public that it is sickening. 11 countries and I learned more from Shamans and what some would call “Medicine Men/Women” than I taught them, which is what I was supposed to be doing. I am blessed for that time and the gifts that were taught to me. The best lesson I ever learned was in the DRC and it was to not FEAR. What will come, will come. Mother Earth will protect you. I later found out we were less than 20km from Ebola. I have no FEAR anymore. Not of living or of dying. If I had to say I had ONE fear, it would be that Western Medicine doesn’t wake up and learn that what they are taught in school is NOT the be all. There is so MUCH MORE outside of the books and labs and Professors with their books and theatre to be learned and integrated into Western Medicine if we are to survive the next Pandemic or Flu or what have you. SOOO MUCH MORE! We just need to work together.🙏🏻

  • As a Naturopathic Physician, Ayurvedic Practitioner and Medical Herbalist, I have always looked at the root cause of disease and the therapeutic treatments are not only green allopathy, supplementary needs, and dietary changes to suppress symptoms, but we also look at environmental stressors, how to master the mind, how to process emotions, and so on. That has been always the core of those sciences. I am really happy to see Dr Chatterjee to bring this awareness to the medical field and implement integrative medicine with the current medical system. Naturopathic Medicine, is the medicine of aetiology, personalised medicine, why medicine and progressive medicine and together with the current medical system, each one doing their best to support the patient, not the system or the ones who own a fortune to keep people sick and dependent on their medicine, we will have healthier people and healed patients.

    • Or from people who actually have chronic diseases, have tried everything this “doctor” said, and found him to be mostly full of it. His only main example where he reversed someone’s illness was someone with diabetes. Diabetes is much more straightforward than other disease because we know the underlying cause and treatment; other chronic disease aren’t that figured out yet and I can guarantee this guy can’t “reverse” someone’s cancer or most autoimmune diseases.

They put me on the liver transplant list. I actually was to sick and needed to get a little more healthy before I could even qualify for transplant. Now Ive changed everything I used to do. All of the causes he specified he presented I corrected. I am completely healthy now. My Drs. Are astounded, I went from not being able to walk or feed myself. From 95 lbs (from 230) to 195, great colesterol, sugar levels, liver and kidney enzymes and stress free. I still have scars, from the surgries and the trachiotomy, but those scars have helped many people hear my story and change their lives. If I could go back and change things......I would not. You dont have to do it overnight, small changes will make huge results. And hey no liver transplant. Be blessed.

Taking them orally doesn’t do the same due to it having to go through the gut. It detoxes a person super fast, so little to no withdrawal at all! I had no withdrawal with the vit C and I had been trying to stop them myself for a year and couldn’t do it. It was so easy with the IV of vit C. Doctors pushed me on to them after 3 spine surgeries. Anyway, I haven’t taken them or craved them since that one IV and it’s been 2 years. No doctor that pushed them on me wants people to know how easy it is to get off of drugs with vit C IV’s because they said they’d lose money, rehabs would shut down, etc. It’s all about greed. Makes me so sad to live in a world like this.

  • The beauty of this is that there are more and more physicians that see things this way. I went to the functional medicine conference last year in Austin, Texas and there were 2,000 practitioners there, mostly physicians, and all want to change medicine away from the disease model.

    @rigatoniboi372@rigatoniboi3727 жыл бұрын
    • NinjaSquid one again Samuel Hahnemann warned not to hold onto disease names for too long. The history and competition of homeopathy and allopathic medicine has been a very long one. A history of both should mention it. Once again I'm not taking sides and both are guilty of different things. All homeopaths of the era were trained doctors and were disgusted how some doctors were doing harm which made way for more sympathetic treatments. If only people knew the history, the truth and then began to share minds. Sounds like the convention you went to is a sign of positive change. But give credit to the people who have been fighting for this long before

    • The physicians may disagree with the current system, but they will not be able to change anything, unless they are prepared to become jobless. And that is something that no physician will consider to do.

    • Jeffry Gerber, M.D. Agreed, but big pharma won't like that! The medical profession as we know it, was set up by Carnegie & Rockefeller when they realized they could profit from illness. They brought their people in to educate those who were going to colleges to become doctors & stamped out many herbalists & natural healers at that time. Now, thank God for functional medicine. And their are many cures for many diseases, but they can't make a dime on them as they are foods, not drugs. See thetruthaboutcancer.com

    • Interesting Cynthia. I guess then I should drop out of the medical profession and become a functionalist! :( All healthcare professionals need to embrace these functional principles and learn to incorporate them into patient care. It redefines the delivery of good healthcare.

    • Dr. Gerber, I hope you do. I realized many years ago that traditional medicine was only treating symptoms, not causes, largely with pharmaceuticals. While there are instances when pills helped, but if we examine the pharmaceutical business model-most are prescribed now for a lifetime of use, then we'll realize it really is more about money that medicine.

    • Not every health condition...but the vast majority of CHRONIC disease. If I break my leg, I want a doctor to set it. If I get a bacterial or viral infection, I'd want medical treatment. But diabetes (especially Type 2), inflammatory diseases, etc...IT'S THE FOOD. We can either feed the disease or fuel our bodies so they can fight the disease. And the medical profession in general knows NOTHING about that. Pills, potions, and procedures. And that's by design...for the profits of drug companies primarily.

    • Jeffry Gerber, M.D. There is a great need for MDs, etc who work in many areas, such as the ER, etc...my point is Food is MEDICINE & Functional or Integrative medicine works best for me, Dr. Gerber! Actually it was an ND who found my overgrowth of Candidiasis & food allergies! I have also asked new MDs how much nutritional training they had gotten & they have basically all said the same..."hardly any." Also...I see more hypnotherapists helping those who don't want or cannot have anesthesia--a blessing for them! You seem to be a very schooled in nutrition & many MDs are not! My pt was then...not for you! I see you've done tremendous work! You seem more like you practice Integrative medicine! So I don't understand the upset.

  • 3:00 my son had low blood calcium caused by low vit D, he nearly died from it and his father a doctor knew nothing about it. 3:40 started reading about vitamin deficiencies learning lots that i didnt learn in medical school. i started applying what i learned with patients treating root causes and they got better. 4:40 35-yr old woman had weight joint sleep issues. after bloodwork i diagnosed type ii diabetes, 6 weeks later it was disappeared. medicine diagnoses chronic disease in late stages, cant spot it early. medicine is good with acute issues not chronic. 7:30 type ii is not a blood sugar problem. high blood sugar is merely a symptom. what started the fire and what fuels it? 8:45 when you eat sugars, blood sugar goes up, body releases insulin, and it normalizes. as you progress toward ill-health, you're becoming more insulin-resistant needing more insulin to normalize and when it can't counter the sugar, at that late stage we call it a disease. 10:30 stress raises cortisol which raises sugar and insulin-resistance. 10:45 one night loss of sleep can equate 6 months of junk food diet. 11:00 as you lose muscle mass aging, that causes insulin resistance. there are many causes of insulin resistance. 12:00 depression can cause it. and many cases are caused by chronic inflammation, when body thinks its under constant attack. if they have high inflammation anti-depressants did not work. the cause of depression is chronic biochemical inflammation. 13:40 if we dont address the cause, we will never get rid of diseases. diseases are symptoms. 14:20 a professor is reversing dimentia symptoms in patients by looking at their diet, sleep, exposures. 15:30 what if these 6 separate diseases were really one: chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, alzheimers. 17:15 we need medicine of etiology not symptomatology, medicine that asks 'why' and treats it.

    • I have been using "our genes load the gun but our LIFESTYLE pulls the trigger", for over 35 year when I teach free classes on health and wellness. Lifestyle is our sleep, eating, exercise, water usage, how we deal with stress--and environmental factors. So happy that Dr Chaterjee, MD gave this TEDx talk and more physicians and general public are becoming aware of the value of looking for the root causes of disease symptoms and working to correct them for the individual. Until 50-70 years ago even modern medicine was very much into treating the whole person, but the American Medical Association (AMA) and big pharmaceutical (mostly started by chemical companies) waged war against "wholistically" treating patients, and transitioned us into a disease based model. They brought about the changes through lobbying and financially incentivizing medical schools with huge amounts of money "donations," and requesting board positions governing the schools. As citizens, and tax payers supporting these medical schools we can vote with our wallets and whether or not we patronize physicians practicing the type of medicine taught in these schools. We can also bring about change by our becoming involved with govenment and by our votes.

I spent my teens up to early 30's eating processed, packaged food, drinking lots of fizzy pop, no healthy diet, no exercise, plenty of anxiety, depression and stress which in turn i deal with heart palpitations, trip after trip to the hospital to deal with it, having my heart scars burned, rebooted my heart, medication, medication, medication and only the odd temporary relief and the issues are back again until i took control. I started Reiki meditation self healing daily, i am eating more salads, getting the right vitamins, using an earthing mat, cutting out a lot of meat and chips, stopped dairy fully (Lactose), cut out wheat (think i have a gluten allergy), i listen to positive relaxation music daily, i'm about to start Yoga, i make sure i get at least 30 minutes walk daily, i read self help books often and have a number of books on mind, body, spirit & healing, meditation and other such books to read. I get regular quality sleep. My palpitations have gone down to the point i cut out medication and it's maybe once every week i'll get a heart flutter, slowly i am feeling changes and as i learn through books on ways to self heal, what causes the problems, how to change your diet, overcome stress, anxiety, depression and so on slowly the pieces of the jigsaw to heal myself are coming together. The mind is a wonderful thing and if you sit down for a few minutes, close your eyes, relax and then ask your subconscious please guide me towards healing my conditions you will start to get the answers you seek, you will come across books, videos like this, chances to go see live talks, websites, podcasts, other youtube videos and the path towards good heal will reveal it's self. Have an amazing healthy life :)
