Sugar is hiding everywhere in today's widely-accepted diet, but meanwhile its devastating effects are creating more deaths than automobile accidents. In this eye-opening talk, Dr. Jody Stanislaw, a Naturopathic Doctor who has been studying the negative effects of sugar since being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 7, dives into how the widespread negative effects of sugar are effecting us all, and what you can do about it. Dr. Jody Stanislaw received her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine in 2007. She is a Certified Diabetes Educator, Type 1 Diabetes Specialist, and a founding board member of the Low Carb Diabetes Association. Having lived with Type 1 Diabetes since the age of seven, she has dedicated her career to helping others with Type 1. From her 30+ years of experience, she teaches life-changing information about how to successfully manage Type 1 that most physicians have never learned, and the millions struggling with Type 1 desperately need to know.
Patients from over thirty states and ten countries have worked with her via her virtual practice. Yet there are millions around the world still struggling. To tackle this gap, she will soon be launching the first-ever, Type 1 diabetes virtual training course, with the goal of improving the lives of millions of Type 1’s around the world.     • Great quote. The Doctor in the movie “The Perfect Human Diet” calls it “human food and non-human food”. That helped me. You wouldn’t give a dog cake or cinnamon rolls, only meat because that is the food their species should eat. Yet people do it to themselves (self included…though I try not to, and succeed most of the time.)

  • My mom and I went on a diet together after eating awfully for years & the changes in the way you feel is insane. Not to mention that prior to beginning the diet I had stomach problems constantly & while on the diet they nearly disappeared. Crazy how our bodies are literally trying to tell us that what we’re eating is killing us.

    • ​@@slimfit767 Sugar does NOTHING to you without a paralyzed/or semi-paralyzed insulin receptor, if your insulin receptor is working properly, you will NOT get type 2 from sugar! FACT. I tested the science for 10 years. The only thing apparent is that sugar can lead to cavities if you dont brush often.

    • @@emnall77 Just stopped. First day or two is bad. I embraced the suffering and focused on things that interested me. Played hypnotic video games to get my mind off it and let the time go by. Drank caffeine beverages. Really just got my mind on other things.

  • I'm 71 years old and have had problems sleeping since I was in my early 30s. I have been through several sleep studies with little success. Just after Christmas of this year (early 2023) I decided to cut out all sugar intake. No sugar at all. I'm now sleeping more deeply and restful than I've slept in over 40 years. It's absolutely wonderful. My quality of life has drastically improved. The question I have now is, why did my sleep doctors NEVER tell me about this???

They asked me how do you stay so healthy when I give them the answer they say “oh I can’t do that” I save my breath for those who want to learn how to be healthy.

  • I am off sugar for 3 months now. Withdrawal was not easy at all. The symptoms were crazy. But I made it. And now I go even further. Since 2 days I am off all wheats and my goal is to become entirely wheat free.

    • @@michaelangeloevans2722 i think it was the quality of calories honestly. I ate way more clean.. getting rid of refined sugars helped tremendously. Keep in blind, i didn't even care to lose weight, i just wanted to get further away from my pre diabetic billing.

    • And bonus: Discipline becomes a quiet/calm source of joy once it is instilled as habit. It's only painful when first practiced. Or, I suppose, if we do not reframe and retrain our thinking it could continue to feel quite burdensome. It can feel freeing.

    • This is so insanely true- I learned this the hard way when I got a tumor (benign, acoustic neuroma) after living on junk food my whole life. I did tons of research on the link between diet/cancer and did a drastic diet upheaval, most importantly removing sugar. A year later I recently had a follow-up appointment and it had actually shrunk quite a bit. I will always regret not hving taken better care of myself initially, because although I eat better now I'm now mostly deaf in one ear from a tumor and will have that hearing-loss forever

Carbs are great especially for people who are active and want energy, they also taste good and overall make your life way better without any real side effects, just have starches and fibers from healthy sources such as rice, brown rice, oat meal, fruits, beans, whole grains instead of sugar

  • Wow, one of the best TED talks I have listened too! Trust me, I work in a hospital, and she is 100 percent correct about the damage diabetes does!! A majority of our patients are obese diabetics in their 50s having their toes and then their feet, and then their legs amputated for chronic wounds and infections!

  • Hits close to home. My uncle passed away at the age of 54. He developed Type 2 diabetes as a kid, and he wasn't even obese or anything. What's sad is, you really do have to keep up with your insulin if you have it. My uncle was on a fixed income and was rationing his insulin only doing about half of what he was supposed to, to try and afford his other bills. We hadn't heard from him for a couple days and went to check to discover his body. Him rationing his insulin is what killed him.

  • This is a very good, necessary talk! Unfortunately, the 80/20 rule is a fallacy. For most of us, sugar becomes an addictive food, even in a small amount. So one cookie becomes 100 cookies. It’s actually easier to commit to 100% sugar free than to even be 98% sugar free. Once the body is completely free of the sugar addiction, the cravings go away.

    • Be stronger. Just as you can cut sugar out, you can stop at 1 cookie. Sugar doesnt force your brain and body to reach for the next treat. It just makes it more difficult. Discipline is all it takes. If you say "i can't stop at 1", youve convinced yourself that a force outside of your control will take over and it allows you to forfeit responsibility. Thats bull. Eat the cookie and stop. Or dont eat the cookie. But don't tell convince yourself that you have the inability to stop once you've started. The 80/20 rule works as long as you have foundational discipline. If you dont, cookies aren't what you should worry about.

    • Yes. I tried and the moment I had 'just one' candy to celebrate it turned into the whole bag and then I was already at the store buying more. Let's face it, most of us aren't built with that type of mental strength and the discipline is built through daily habits and good choices. It's the safest bet to just eliminate the risk completely and not torture ourselves.

    • I agree. I will say...from my experience...when I take the time to make healthy, delicious home-made food at home, I crave less sugar. It's kind of crazy, but it works. When I let myself eat junk food, I crave sugar. When I eat well, I don't feel like I have to have sugar. My tastebuds are satisfied. Just thought I would share that.

    • Yeah, viewing food as fuel for the activities we do is really helpful. But if people think, "well, I ran two miles today so I can indulge in cookies" then they are off the mark. It doesn't work that way, not if we want optimal health and functioning.

  • I was on a low carb diet for about a year. For the first time in my life my body was almost totally painfree and I felt energized. Then depression and disordered eating hit me and I started eating sugar like crazy. I gained 10kg and now my body is constantly aching, I get out of breath easily and I'm tired all the time. It's funny how easily we do the opposite of what we should when we get sick with an mental illness. In the past month I've finally started to feel like I'm getting back the motivation to start exercising and changing my diet. I'm not gonna do low carb anymore because it triggers my eating disorder but I'm definitely gonna reduce my sugar intake and watch the quality of the carbs I eat. Thank you for this video!

  • 11:05...this is exactly what many nursing homes did a decade ago. What used to be "sugar free" options for diabetics...became "just give them the same as their non diabetic table mate and offset the intake with insulin." Almost 16 years now I've worked in the same dietary nursing home kitchen. I remember the day it switched and all of a sudden you heard this term "quality of life" to justify the shift from "sugar free options" to "they can have anything" as if eating sweeter was meant to better their lives. Ironically a great deal of sugar free dessert options today STILL have very unhealthy artificial sweeteners...

    • I worked in a nursing home as a dietary aide and many many residents flat out told me they'd rather die than live their last little time without eating what they wanted. They're like 90 years old they lived full lives and believe in heaven so.. Plus some residents would only eat and drink sweet things at all. The lead PT told me it's because sweet is the last taste to go. And their appetite and thirst tends to go too. It was better for these patients to eat only icecream and juice than nothing at all and it made them happy for a moment which is heartwarming to see in a building full of so much sadness.

Calories at that point are crucial regardless. I'd much rather see somebody fill their belly with sweets/foods they truly enjoy than be pressured into drinking a shake they can't stand the taste of...

  • 20 years ago I was a sugar junkee. I began to have symptoms of fibromyalgia and felt like an old woman. I changed my diet completely and lost 50 lbs. All the pain and symptoms went away. The initial struggle to give up certain foods is difficult, but the alternative is a good motivation for anyone who has the will to live.

Just use those and make your own sweets out of say coconut and almond flour, and use those to sweeten everything. Make avocado and coconut ice creams, and things like that it works.

  • She said that she has type 1 diabetes. Her dry mouth/lip-smacking more than likely comes from the life-saving medication she has to take on a daily basis. That's one of the common side effects of diabetes meds. Give her a break. This was a really good talk.

  • A few months ago we had did a school project where we had to write a 5 page essay speaking about a Ted Talk that we had to check out. I did this one and it changed my life. I started applying it to my own life and started eating less processed and low sugar foods in my diet. I truly feel better and more energetic. I also lost weight and feel more fit to do things!!

  • It doesn’t have to be 0 or 100, just as she mentioned in the Ted talk. The 80/20 rule is great. I have been healing from toxic mold and yeast overgrowth so have been making major dietary changes. I eat brown rice a few times a week, limited amounts of potatoes and other starchy vegetables, but eat apples, berries, peaches, non/starchy vegetables freely. I’ve made a complete turnaround in how I feel, and I plan to continue living by the 80/20 rule as I move forward. I was relatively healthy before so I didn’t have any weight to really lose, but it’s made me feel great. But I didn’t COMPLETELY cut our carbs as others are suggesting. I don’t believe that is ever a good idea for humans.

    • I was a sugar addict for most of my life, it's how I was raised. It took me years of trying to get away from it. But I've finally pretty much eliminated refined sugars from my diet completely and I feel so much better! Physically and mentally and my skin is clearer. I never crave it at all anymore and even when others are enjoying something rich and trying to get me to indulge a little and try a bite I'm not even a little tempted. I view it as a toxin instead of a treat and everyone thinks I'm being too strict. But that's how I have to look at it or I'll just fall prey to the addiction all over again. I do eat a lot of fruit though. When I first began trying to get away from it I used dates and dried mulberries because they have a high sugar content but are also packed with nutrients. Now I mostly eat fresh fruit and only the occasional dried fruit. That's what I think of as a treat now instead of the cookies and brownies I used to over eat. I fully believe anyone can do it if I can. I have a super addictive personality. But the more you work on self control the easier it becomes until it is just second nature.

  • I have had pre-diabetes for 20 years and have been doing what she said but I need to improve a bit more. When my new Doctor asked me how long I have had Pre-diabetes I told him and he said he has never known anyone like me cause all of his patients diagnosed with it go on metformin and then insulin within 10 years. This is a board certified family physician. MOST know nothing about this. This lady is spot on! Last A1c for me was 5.9... Not bad but I can improve it. So can you. YOU are in charge of your blood sugar destiny if you are a thinking person.

  • My type 2 diabetes was so out of control, I was heart attack and stroke levels. I went keto. 20 g of carbs a day. No sugar. No grains or processed foods. My BP went from 312/148 to (today) 122/85. My blood sugar went from 368 to 145 and still dropping. I eat 6 hours a day. A huge salad with Avocado and a protein meal of seafood etc. Snacks are pistachios. I have never felt better. No more cravings. I feel free. And my future is looking so much brighter. You are so so right.

  • This reminded me of a time I cut sugar out for lent, that's 40 days, during which I experienced cravings, headaches and suffered for about 2 weeks, only to discover that after that period I felt amazing. I'm going to look into what I'm eating more cause right now it's all sugar. I know it'll be good for me, especially in the long run!

  • It is possible to make gradual changes. Cutting out the worst offenders in your diet, and reducing quantities of the rest. I changed my taste for sugary sweets by switching to lower sugar or no sugar cookies, cakes etc, and eating whole fruit and plain yogurt at breakfast instead of lots of juice and sweetened yogurt. It also helps to stay out of big pharmacies and "grocery" stores which carry huge amounts of processed foods, sweet drinks and snacks/candy in the front of the store.

    • You also have to cut out flour, because it's a concentrate like sugar. If you remove flour and sugar from your diet you can eat meat eggs fish butter cream cheese nuts vegetables fruit. You can get zero carb/cal sugars that taste good and when you stop eating sugar/flour you stop feeling so hungry for snacks.

I am suspicious of the trillion dollar sugar industry; Easter candy, Halloween candy, Christmas candy, sugar in every processed food item you can pick up at the store. They want you to believe sugar is a harmless indulgence. It is not.

    • @@yin-yang-gal Hi Loraine, I sort of went cold turkey. In the beginning, I used sugar alcohols as replacers, like erythritol, until I realized that these were messing up my gut. Then I really came off. I know it can be really challenging, but once you set the pattern, it becomes a lot easier. For my clients who are really struggling with this, I recommend an amino acid called DL-phenylalanine, which can really help with sugar cravings. I've seen it work wonders! And yes, sweet veggies or fruits can be a wonderful substitute. Carrots, apples, bananas, cherries, whatever. Good luck!

People just do not realize the horror of diabetes and obesity...Like the lady below me said, the pain of regret is so so much worse than the pain of discipline.     • Not necessarily. Most people who have trouble with alcohol, even serious trouble, are not true alcoholics. Most recover on their own and do go on to drink occasionally. But honestly, once you get used to it, it becomes harder and harder to find a really good reason to eat dessert. You either leave out something else even better to eat, or you end up too full because you ate it on top of real food.

  • I’m only 23 and my boyfriend is 25, but I can’t tell you how many times I tell him how much it irks me that he chooses to “eat like a 5 year old”. I wish he could eat better. His fast metabolism is somehow an excuse to eat sugar and processed foods. His family has health problems in his bloodline, and despite how many times I tell him to stop eating that way, he won’t listen. It makes me crazy! He’s literally addicted! And because he wants to go eat out instead of make a nice curry or a healthy salad I’m gaining weight. I love him and he’s great to me, but if this goes on the way it is, I don’t know if I can take it any longer, much less another pound. Sugar is literally a killer.

  • I started experiencing inflammation everywhere which led to memory loss, chest pains, blurry vision, disorientation, etc. The moment I switched to a whole food leafy green diet, all those symptoms stoped and are now quickly getting better. So glad I was recommended this video.

I'm sad I was so over exposed as a kid, but glad I'm doing well now. I think most people will do best with 80/20, I just had to quit 100% because I am an addict.

  • I changed from breakfast cereals to 2 eggs just because it seemed a healthier option. Wow , what a difference it made. No longer "starving" by 11or 12, my knees and wrists no longer ached and I had extra energy. Now I look on cereals as poison as all the other sugar filled foods. I was constantly feeling this starving sensation before mealtimes, that's gone once I made this small change it encouraged me to do more.

  • When growing up in the 80s a bag of M&Ms once a week on grocery day was a huge treat. The rest of the week my mom cooked from scratch and we ate from our garden and had our chickens eggs. Today, it's normal to eat a candy bar every day plus a latte Along with all the other refined packaged carbs called meals. This video is a great wake up call!

  • I live in a rural area, and when I go into town to do my shopping, I used to stop by a Dairy Queen and get a large or medium size blizzard as a special treat. Then I looked up the amount of sugar grams in it. 130 in my favorite large size blizzard. And I realized that was no treat for my pancreas! Not even a small size!     • *Drink a capsule of Ceylon Cinnamon everyday and you will never get diabetes. Ceylon Cinnamon is also very good for diabetic patients to help them lower and maintain a normal blood sugar. *Eat one bitter grapefruit daily or at least 3 times a week to maintain a normal blood sugar. *Drink lemon 🍋 water at least 3 times a week to maintain a normal blood sugar. *Don't eat sugar, but if you must eat sugar once in a while, then go for the unprocessed raw brown sugar.

    • The weird part is that our loving parents often committed "abuse" unknowingly by forcing us to "finish your food and you can have desert" and "You have to eat everything on your plate". The fact is, some of us have felt almost abused by our parents because now we can't throw a plate of food away so we walk away from a meal totally stuffed to the gills. If you're one of these people, try eating half a plate of food and then force yourself to throw it away - don't save it - and see how it plays on you psychologically. When you go to a restaurant, if you get full, stop eating and don't take the food home. If you think you might take food home, ask for a box up front and split the food BEFORE you start eating. It's scary. It goes completely against our thinking. But you have to force yourself to stop thinking like you used to.

    • And yet some medicos tell us acne is not caused by eating things like chocolates etc, like many believe it is. I guess each body is unique. You obviously found what works for yours but it may not work for others. You can often discover useful thi gs by studying your own body and how it reacts to Substances like different foods, some of which are great for some bodies but toxic to others. There is This mistaken general notion that, since food is not illegal, unlike, say, dope is in some places, then the dope must all be so toxic and the legal food and drugs must be so good, since it is legal. That is nonsense because, depending on your body chemistry and what is put I to legal Substances, like supermarket foods, these legal ones can prove far more toxic than something like pure naturally grown marihuana, for some body types. I am not advocating use of illicit drugs, merely making a point.

    • My skin problems had 2 primary causes: bad fats like fast foods, canola, corn or soy bean oil, any cooked oils or anything deep fried etc. that helped a lot. The other thing is kidney problems. The skin is considered the 3rd kidney, so if your kidneys aren’t doing well then your skin breaks out trying to eliminate toxins that your kidneys would have otherwise removed. Fast-foods and bad oils are among the worst things for your kidneys, so removing the source is the first step. After that you want to drink certain kidney cleansing teas (like Robert Morse heal-all tea or Andreas Moritz Kidney cleansing tea found in high loved flush book), which will help further unblock the Kidneys. Also grapes can be fantastic at unblocking the kidneys, or juicing celery or other organic produce, it is highly hydrating and healing for the kidneys due to its salt-balance (potassium, sodium, mag, etc). Sugar is also hard on the kidneys and limit filtration, causing the skin to help remove from the blood what the kidneys aren’t, causing acne and other skin related issues, rashes that don’t seem to go away, etc.

  • This was a great Talk that a lot of people could benefit from listening to. I'm 32 now, but it's only been over the last couple years that I really started to discover just how awful excess sugar and highly refined carbs are for you on a daily basis. They don't satiate your hunger, they don't fuel your body properly, and they don't make you feel good. I can't believe how much added sugar is in almost everything at the grocery store (let alone from takeout restaurants). And you see so many people that are just addicted to the stuff. I truly believe in the benefits of a low-carb diet. I try to replace carbs with protein and healthy fats as much as possible now, and it didn't take long for my weight to drop back down to a normal level, and I feel more healthy and energetic than ever because of it.

  • Drastically cutting sugar 15 months ago (and switching to a keto like diet) has been one of the best things I've ever done, I've even got a six pack for the first time in my life! No bloating, no farts, even energy levels, combines with intermittent fasting very well which also has many benefits.

  • I cut out sugar after a lifetime of eating chocolate and processed foods. I lost over 30 pounds without trying. I eat a whole foods diet and my sweet hit now is just fruit, lots of fruit. It really is life changing just as she says.

    • Fruit has an effect on blood sugar, therefore it is sugar. Sugar from fruit contains both fructose and glucose which is also in soda. So I would not eat a lot. 2 servings a day would suffice.

  • I read SUGAR BLUES and THE SUGAR ADDICT'S DIET twenty years ago and they changed my life! Quitting sugar cured me of a horrible illness - Graves Disease. It's so great to see that this message has finally gone mainstream. ❤😁🍳

    • @@dafni10565 Oh, Daphne. I'm so sorry. Mine went undiagnosed for a full year... until I grew a huge goiter at my throat. I hope you are getting better care. I was on medication for a long time. Until they said I would need a bone marrow transplant if it continued. This really scared me so I decided to go off the medication on my own. It took 7 tries. The 7th time I was on a fruit, vegetables, nuts, and seeds diet. So I continued that for a year, until I couldn't stand it anymore. Lol. When I started reintroducing regular food, sugar was the one thing that brought my symptoms back every time. Hope this helps. ❤ Oh, PS. The last time I went to see a doctor I was feeling great. But they said, "Your numbers are still high. You should have surgery." I never went back. Do you have a goiter? A friend suggested eating a clove of garlic a day. Yes, raw garlic. He said it was his grandma's cure. It shrunk my goiter in 2 weeks! The doctors didn't want to hear about that either. I wanted to share this with the world! All I kept hearing was "It doesn't count. It's ANECDOTAL." Blessings. ❤

  • I’m so tired of being told to stop eating carbs. People have been eating carbs for centuries and our society revolves around carbs as a food source. What we truly need to stop consuming is: sugar added to coffee, deserts, soda, candy, juice, etc. if people stopped eating these ‘extra’ sugars, they could eat all the pasta and bread they want.

As soon as civilization started agriculture that’s when all disease come with it because of vitamin deficiency cause by anti nutrients in grains. Grain was and has always been grown to support massive civilizations because there is not enough meat to go around. Literally the poor, uneducated, and slaves eat grains. Not to mention all grains cause some type of inflammation in your body.
