Nothing is ever explained as to why its happening and things arent ever given suspense or time to be built up, its really just "dante kills a building then next a giant monkey attacks him then he decides to shoot down a chopper"

    @goldlight1322@goldlight13224 жыл бұрын
    • Well considering that DMC2 is somewhat of a mess in development with half of time it was being developed having a different director. But if we are to fit and stretch DMC2 into the cannon since the story is 3,1, anime series, 2,4,5. DMC2 is Dante welling over the death of his family that's why he's gloomy the whole game and he isnt as invested in doing jobs, using a false coin toss to help him move forward. Even in the anime, there's moments where Dante seems to be falling into despair. In the end of DMC2, the "Let's go all the way to hell" line if we put it into this context seemed like he's going to hell to die. Until it's explained in the "Before the Nightmare" novel that he found an open portal leading back to the human world from hell. There's only 2 ways to get to hell and back. A hell gate or Yamato. So this probably gave Dante a bit of hope that Vergil is probably still alive but doesnt count on it.

      @realamericannegro977@realamericannegro9773 жыл бұрын
    • I can somewhat agree, but honestly the only way for dmc 2 to be good is if it wasn't dmc 2. Everything would have to remade. Characters, enemies, story, locations (too open and not good for combat), gameplay, weapons. If, for example, they remade dmc 1 they would have to update the gameplay, but the locations, bosses, enemies and story (for the most part) could still be reused. What I'm trying to say is that at that point, they might as well just make dmc 6, which I would rather see.

  • I have been playing DMC for like 25 years. DMC 1 came out the same day I bought by PS2 so it was the first game I got. DMC2 is the craziest thing ever and to all the new fans I will explain what happened behind the scenes at Capcom which led to this abomination. So lets start, DMC1 came out and it was a huge success, the team that made it and Capcom are very happy so Capcom executives did the obvious thing and moved the team to another project and brought in a new team to make DMC2....a new team made up of ex Capcom arcade devs who for the most part did not like DMC1, they did not like the combat and they detested Dante's style, tone and comedy. Now you know why DMC2 Dante is so serious/stoic compared to DMC1. The new team also did not like the combat so they dumbed everything down but I also suspect they couldn't grasp all the technical work needed to make the game flow well because the original team that made DMC1 had a lot of background in fighting games and the new one didn't. More than halfway through development some Capcom executives realized this game was trash and they removed the director of DMC2 (who to this day remains unknown) and made Itsuno the new director. He did what he could but the game was screwed since it was 6 months from release and Capcom did not allow the release date to be delayed. At least from this dumpster fire we got DMC3, Capcom really made a great comeback. DMC4 was also good but at this time Capcom wanted COD and Halo sales numbers so they went with the hated reboot thinking it would sell more, it didn't. After the failed reboot they made another comeback and we got the masterpiece that is DMC5.

But I don't see why the stories were split in the first place. Dante's story cutscenes feel like Virgil's cutscenes from the subsequent games. But unlike DMC 3, which had Virgil as an unlockable for beating the game, and the other games which had Virgil as a DLC character, we just get Dante with half a story and the other half is in Lucia's story, most likely with the problem of not having a complete story because of how they decided to split it.

  • Anyone bring up the convoluted history of DMC 2 or should I? Just gonna put it anyway. You don't have to read it if you don't want to. So DMC2's development was started while the original team of DMC1 was working on the localization of DMC1 for american release. Team Little Devil's (the DMC1 developers) had no knowledge of this development until about halfway through. The original director, who to this day remains nameless, had a very inexperienced team who had never taken on a project of this size before and were promising things that they couldn't do. Four months before scheduled release, the original director quit the project and Hediaki Itsuno was hired to take his place. After looking at the what the team had accomplished, he realized that he would be a scapegoat for a failed game because the only working part of the game was the stinger move (which has become a joke due to how ridiculous it looks), so Itsuno basically had around 4 months to create a working game. Due to this the game is very bare bones and feel unfinished and boring. They had to cut many things because they were extremely pressed for time and the team was very novice in making an action game. Itsuno has also directed every DMC game since 2 so take with that what you will.

I mean, there are some good things about DMC 2...the music is badass, the graphics (For the most part) have aged very well, and most of the character designs (Especially the depressed puppet that is Dante in this game.) are really sweet. A shame that that kind of stuff doesn't automatically make it fun to play, like literally every other DMC game in the franchise. At least 3 basically saved the franchise after this.

As for Lucia's campaign, there are noticeable yet slight improvements to her gameplay over Dante's. Due to her projectile weapons not being as OP as Dante's some bosses actually require a little effort. You also get to see the story unfold from her perspective, which provides additional context for what's happening. She also gets some new bosses and enemies to fight that Dante never sees. Her campaign also has a better ending and closure.

  • I own this game for PS2 and never finished it, so when I got the collection in a bundle, I knew I had to fulfill my destiny. Lucia IS nicer to play (aside from her side-dodge not being optimal transporation like Dante's), has a tremendously goofy grenade weapon that's almost worthless but has some meme value, and has a better actor than the text-to-speech program they got for Dante, but she also has to suffer a thankfully easy water level. A little disappointing we never got this character in a good game.

    • The animation was really cool, but the game would have not been as bad if they had actually not included the wall run. It's far too easy to accidentally do when you're simply trying to roll. It does have invincibility frames, but it doesn't keep up your style meter and when you're trying to dodge near a wall with an uneven surface it makes it 100 percent impossible to dodge an attack. As cool as it looks, there's absolute zero usage to the wall run. In DMC3 you could actually start the wall run from the air so you could use it to go higher than you can with a jump, but with DMC2 you can't use it to go higher and it's never helped me with dodging and it only gets in the way of dodging. I like the wall run in DMC3 because you can't ACCIDENTALLY do it and it served some sort of purpose, but the DMC2 gameplay would have been objectively better if they had not included the wall run because it does zero positives and does massive negatives.

  • I've been a giant DMC stan since the first game came out, to the point that I own and wear an actual red leather trench coat, and i want to weigh in on a couple things: you described the combo system wrong - it doesnt go by what direction you move the stick, it goes by what slash you move the stick after. that doesnt make it less shit. regarding unfinishedness/lack of polish, you're absolutely right, that's exactly what happened. the story goes that they started development on 2 before 1 was finished, put a whole team of new guys on it, and their director was an idiot. So 6 months before release, they bring in Itsuno to take over, and at that point virtually nothing was done. They had some art assets, some maps, and only one or two attacks finished, and itsuno managed to get them to crank out almost the whole game in 4-5 months. The fact that it's playable at all is impressive. Lucia's campaign was at one point supposed to be the main campaign, but then they realized Lucia sucks as a character and her story is dumb (her campaign does at least HAVE a story, kinda) and they had to sell the game on Dante. And a last thing - in light of the time crunch, you can see some nuggets of ideas in dmc2 that, had they been given more time, might have made it a good game. In fact a lot of them like rainstorm, twosometime, air combos, and instant weapon switching did go on to be great additions to the series, they just couldn't get them right the first time out. So while DMC2 ended up bad, it's still an important step for the series to have taken on the road to what it's become.

  • I've been waiting for this for so long! 100% worth the wait, just like DMC3 will be after this travesty. Oh and the Lucia campaign is only better because it's shorter and they try to give Lucia an actual character arc. Unlike Dante who walks in, does a thing and then walks somewhere else to do a thing there too. Only time this game becomes not shit is when you beat the game on hard mode and unlock Trish as a playable character since Trish just plays like DMC1 Dante, fists and sword included. But you still have to beat the game twice to unlock a better moveset for the main character.

The guns are a fucking crutch that dumps on your rating. If you're a casual, sure, just shoot everything, but you're not really trying if you don't aim for S on every mission. In which case you need to get your big boy pants on, stop whining about shooting everything, and learn how to combo into dodge into combo into jump into shoot into combo. DMC2 can be entertaining, when you ignore the meme about "JuSt ShOoT eVeRyThInG! eZ!" Especially since the reviewer here failed to mention the final boss, after the giant amalgam. Who blocks bullets the whole time, forcing you to sword fight him. Whoops.

    • @@Nekufan1000000 Yeah sorry that's bullshit, not only is sword combat boring and slow in this game due to them putting all of the combat dev time into guns but you actually can beat the final boss with guns. The only good thing about DMC2 is laughing at how bad the game is when you can rape every boss with what's supposed to be the weakest form of weapon. Without that, the game has zero entertainment value.

  • The only things DMC2 got going for it is Dante's design, smoother graphics, and the ability to run on walls due to the Matrix craze. But that's it. Now, you'll hear fans try HARD to justify this game. Either they claim it's an underappreciated gem like Alien 3 or claim Dante was 'depressed'. I call bullshit on both. Not only was this game solely made to cash-in on DMC1's success (going so far as to do it behind Hideki Kamiya's back), but Dante's 'way of dealing with depression has always been to bottle it up and hide it with a smile. He does this in prequel material and DMC1-DMC5. Dante is this way because his own creator (Hideki Kamiya) is this way lol. A lot of Kamiya's characters take up a few of his personality quirks. To put the nail to the 'But Dante was depressed!' coffin, in all DMC2 development interviews (from game magazines like PSM to promo material released prior to the sequel's release), the sole intent behind Dante's new demeanor was to have him be more "mature". DMC2 took place in the far future where Dante had finally grown up and mellowed out. And like James Bond, he would be partnered with a new babe to join him on a new adventure. And since DMC2 was made during the Matrix craze, the development team felt a mellowed Dante (like Neo) would be "stylish". So, that's it. Dante wasn't acting 'depressed' over Nero Angelo/Vergil. Dante was simply being 'mature' (the exact word the DMC2 development team used). Of course, this future timeline of DMC2 consequently backed the franchise into a corner. And since no one liked this 'mature' Dante, we ended up with a PREQUEL instead. Then when that prequel proved to be a success, that DMC team (headed by Itsuno now) opted to just to gloss over DMC2's character progression altogether. Now, it's considered an estranged step-son of DMC family, along with the Reboot. Since then, several fans have attempted to explain the Dante in DMC2, trying to play up this 'depression' card. But for longtime fans who've followed all the shady events leading up to DMC2 as well as understand how Dante always dealt with his depression, we know the REAL truth: it's bullshit. Even the team behind Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne chose to return Dante to his former glory days since they weren't buying it either. In the end, Capcom's greed for more money, bad writing, and a lack of understanding of Dante's character nearly killed this franchise. To have many fans attempt to rewrite DMC2's controversial history and make excuses on behalf of Capcom means we're doomed to have this same mistake repeated, which is how Itsuno got screwed over by the reboot in the same way Kamiya got screwed over by DMC2. While we all have the freedom to enjoy whatever we want (and trust me, I like a good amount of cheese content myself lol), fans shouldn't feel obligated to love a turd or make excuses for it either.

I've never had an auto lock happen until the reboot, the lock on in all of the other games were hold R1 to lock which would then make the directional inputs easier to consistently pull off. Then to switch targets click the left stick. If there's an option to turn lock on into a toggle I would reccomend turning it off because all of the games feel designed around hold to lock if you're comfortable with giving it a shot.

  • So, Dante does have a personality in this game. He just killed his brother, the last link to a happy life. The events of the anime play out, and you see dante lighten up a bit. Then Dmc4 happens, which, at the beginning, Dante is ruthless, efficent, and non verbal. Until Nero shows up, and outstages him. (Though Dante was merely playing with Nero) Finally, Dante has a reason to be his wacky, slightly unhinged (in a good way) self. I know when the game came out, he was just your standard edgy guy, but the devs really worked to keep dante on a character arc, spanning his entire life. In 5, he relishes the idea to fight his brother. He's all business, in the beginning, but that fight at the end, was filled with nothing but Happiness. Dante longs for a great fight, but he longs for a better brother.
