Devil May Cry is a strange game. This video is part of a series reviewing the Devil May Cry franchise from the perspective of a newcomer who has only played DmC: Devil May Cry and liked it. Insanity, I know. This Devil May Cry review was recorded on the PS4 Devil May Cry HD Collection.

  • Fun fact about the "I Should have been the one to fill your dark sould with light!" scene Drew Coombs the voice actor of Dante in this game could have Taken a another shot at the line but the entire Dev team Including the infamous Hideki Kamiya (who were all present during the recording of the english dub of the game.) Bursted out in laughter due to the voice crack and decided to keep it because it was so funny to them.

      @boredomkiller99@boredomkiller994 жыл бұрын
    • @White-Van Helsing Jumping is better because it keep you on your toes with the enemy. In a game where style is the keyword, you want to keep comboing without much of running around between each hit. Especially with jump canceling and how the game is built in the mindset of fighting games (Itsuno is fighting game developer) where canceling one move with other move is the key to keep the combo flowing. In most situation jumping is that one move canceling method that act as a bridge between one attack animation with another one. Especially with the fact that jumping animation itself can be cancelled by with so many other move. So the act of jumping itself when you about the get hit not only save your HP but your style and combo too. For example: jump to avoid, switch to beowulf, dive kick, jc, rainstorm while pressing direction button so dante land on other side then do some crazy combo with you melee. That for me is better that actually rolling like you playing dark souls or some shit.

  • Seems like everyone else already beat me to the punch. Yeah DMC 1 definitely shows it's age since it's technically the first of this type of game on top of the fact that it was a fork of a completely different type of game. Hope you can survive through DMC 2. As has already been said by plenty of others, DMC 3 is when the series finally nails it's identity for most fans.

  • As a fan of the series, most of your criticisms here are super fair. DMC1 can be hard to go back to, even for a lot of fans. The series doesn't really come into its own until 3, which has a much stronger focus on pure action and a better grasp of tone. It's like the first season of The Simpsons - it's not terrible or anything, but there's a lot of early installment weirdness and it just hadn't yet figured out its own identity. Honestly I would just do what Capcom itself does and ignore the second game completely. DMC2 isn't even entertainingly bad. It's just anti-fun. You fight these demonic tanks and they literally just sit there and let you kill them. If you play it for more than an hour you will feel your brain dying. Don't do that to yourself! Just play 3.

    @samfivedot@samfivedot4 жыл бұрын
    • Personally, although I really like DMC 3 I prefer DMC 1 a lot more. The more the franchise went on the less I liked the games, and I think that's because what I really fell in love with when I was a kid was the dark and creepy atmosphere, the sense of an immense evil hanging over the castle, which you get by the music, the environments and the notes you find around. After DMC 3 the demons although cool didn't have much character because they didn't feel as threatening. They felt like big weirdly shaped enemies, but they didn't feel like murderous malicious entities that wanted to destroy the world. Maybe that's what I liked so much about DMC 1: it made me feel anxious and vulnerable, and that made kicking demon asses way more exciting. You're not just showing off how cool you can be with your combos, you're also trying not to get yourself killed, and that fine balance always managed to make me feel anxious and scared when there were no demons around, and then turned it around when it was time to fight making me feel euphoric and badass for overcoming such a dangerous threat

    • Lance, if Dmc1 is hard to go back to even for "fans" then can we really call them fans? I played dmc1 for the 1st time this year, og ps2 fat via crt. Love it and have beaten it over 4 times already. The core gameplay is a blast, avoiding "dull", using creative combos etc. I can't wait to play 3, 4 and 5. I've grown tired of the put down everything retro mentality going around lately.

      @retrosoul8770@retrosoul87704 жыл бұрын
    • @@retrosoul8770 I still like DMC1! It's just that the sequels expand so much on what was cool about it (doing sick combos, getting new weapons, Dante's cocky attitude) and take out the stuff that was less cool (like the easy-mode grenade launcher and the weird underwater sections). So going back to it can feel weird because it's like, where's my weapon switch button? Where are the styles? Only two Devil Arms? I replayed it myself a few years back and had a blast with it. It's a super good game. But I've heard these criticisms of it before and I don't think they're unfair. There was room to grow. Enjoy the sequels! I think you'll see what I mean when you play them

For me, it was nice to see a protagonist like him, that was OP and knew it. You weren't the only one who had problems with the combat, even on release. "Dante" in that game is kinda bland, and really watered down along with Vergil. However Dante and Vergil in the original series are way more fun to watch imo, Dante's the loud and brash while Vergil is the calm and precise one, they're opposites of each other.

DmC came out after the recession of `08 and its themes of socio-economic elites symbolized by the demons and their collaborators fucking people over is arguably even more relevant now than it was then! 3. DMC3 Dante is actually a teenager and has the same(ish) tragic backstory but instead of acting all angst ridden is actually taking steps to do something about it (opening his demon hunting business to find and kill the demon that did it). Having a storyline justification doesn't make it less annoying. 2. Yeah, sure. Let's not pretend like this game has a deep message or theme ok? It merely borrows inspiration from those things to attempt to present an entertaining story. 3. Again, doesn't make the character as presented any less sucky. We already knew how Vergil became the Vergil we know in the original series. His mother was killed, he couldn't stop it from happening, and him and Dante are constantly clashing because they have opposing ideas on what to do about it. And we didn't even need to see pre "I need more power" Vergil brag about having a bigger dick than Dante to understand that.

This will dodge enemy attacks and leave you with enough time to counter attack in most situations throughout the series. Dont get mashy and double jump though as the second jump doesn't have invulnerability. DmC 3 and 4 are really where the series signature combat develops. • When I played this game in 2001 I was amazed by it, the way ppl were amazed by god of war in 2018 . It was ahead of its time and even with its flaws that became very clear over time I don’t really notice them when I go back and play it. It’s like if we take a kid who’s spoiled by all the great new games and make him play an old 90s game he’s going to b baffled by it and most likely not find them very fun. These old games hit different for those who played them long ago because they never lose their touch even with all the flaws. Since the dmc series is got such a great reputation I can see why many ppl won’t b impressed by this game picking it up the past few years.

Also give you a tip in DMC3 if you hold down the DT button (when you upgrade the time length of DT) you will create a burst and will be bigger the longer you it down. Be looking forward for the next video.

  • Honestly, most of your issues are pretty common. Everyone at this point is aware of how rough DMC1 is, so no one's going to be crucifying you for making that observation. There are some things I do disagree with though. Dodge being a directional input is honestly how I wish other games would handle it. Adding a dedicated dodge button just takes up valuable controller real estate that could be used for more interesting things (something the sequels capitalize on in spades.) and it's really not hard to get the hang of if you can do Stinger or high Time. I'll grant though that the camera does make this more awkward than it needs to be at times (something the series thankfully got better at). Saying that, Trickster (DMC3 onwards) can Kinda act as a dedicated dodge button anyway. The tone and writing is also a bit off certainly, though the idea of having a dark, oppressive, gothic atmosphere, mixed with over the top action isn't really an issue inherently. The atmosphere is something I actually really like (kinda wish would return to the series), it's more of an issue of the action stuff not being high energy enough to properly complement it. The tone in DmC got the backlash it did because it tried to retain the devil may care attitude of the original games while taking itself infinitely more seriously than any of the previous games, and even going into ill-advised outright edgy territory. DMC1 faltered with its tone and storytelling, but the game never attempted to be a social commentary, nor have any of its characters perform sniper rifle abortions. Good luck with DMC2. You'll need it.

After the HD release, I can see why the gameplay is very dodgy, not as fluid, smooth or fast-paced as the later entries once Itsuno took over. I played 1 and 2 only once, and that's it. It's better to just watch the cutscenes for the story and lore.

  • Something interesting, DMC 1 is what I would call a janky game that I like for reasons I don't understand, and part is the fact that when I got to DMD I learned so many mechanics about all the bosses and enemies that I didn't on the lower difficulities, and while some of these mechanics are real bullshit, some really helped AND were fun. like for example with nightmare, his AI is super exploitable to the point you can learn to bait specific attacks, and almost all his attacks save the darts and the huge laser are parryable, and ifrit's jump is full of parry frames. a not so fun mechanic I learned in the fight is that the only attack you should be using on nightmare are fully charged dt ifrit punches, because each hit landed on a core brings it closer to breaking and growing a tougher shell and larger damage output, and said damage to the cores even carries over between fights

I grew to really appreciate the bits that remained from it being tied to RE in the creation process. The one hit kill moves, the design of the castle, the demon designs and the humble yet jank beginnings of the series gameplay. The higher difficulties were a pain to complete, but it was worth it when you get the first look at the Sparda costume that appeared in the series, paired with the first appearence of Yamato, though it was just a reskin Alister paired with the Sparda DT from later in the game.

I can definitely see why people love DMC3, but it was a little too fast for me. Oddly enough though, I was perfectly fine with DMC4 and did DMD for it twice; once when it first came out and the second with Lady/Trish in the special edition. I would definitely replay both 1 and 3 if I had the chance. I still appreciate how 3 gave Vergil his Nelo Angelo appearence for a costume’s DT. I do feel like adding in Kamiya's design philosophy would help at trying to figure out what this game specifically was aimed at doing. The mission structure being more in line with arcade games that have a start and end so you can more effectively play each section and as you go forward the mission structure is pretty key to breaking up moments in the series. 2 is pretty much a mess but that's also a thing just about everyone knows but it does have alot of interesting ideas and some neat themes beyond Dante because Dante' arc as of 2's release was completed here. The jokes in this game didn't seem to totally land for you but personally it fits with his reserved character and the theme of family that goes on through this game and the series as a whole.

And yeah, your criticisms are pretty valid imo and reflect my opinion of after the first playthrough quite well, but back then I only kinda wanted to rush through so I could play 3. I appreciate it much more by now. DMC1 is very fun to play. A big problem I have with it though is how badly it sets you up for failure... After you beat ut for the first time it immediately puts you into hard mode. First time I couldn't beat the shadows in level 4 then because I just had next to no health and few moves. I liked exploring my first time through and fighting everything, but actually you kinda only get good rankings and by that also a sufficient amount of red orbs to buy moves if you speedrun it. Plus I barely gave DT a thought my first time through, where now I know it is to be toggled on and off constantly. idk. I like it. It's fun to replay,but also quite heavily flawed with some of the structure. And mechanically it doesn't hold up well to 3 onward because weapon switching is so rificulously slow

  • Yeah, the story is definitely not the main selling point of this game. The story doesn't really get good until 3. Dmc 1 and 2 are all about the devs fumbling around and trying to make a good combat system. From what I heard Dmc 2 had a completely different team and the game was made in a short amount of time. So yeah...it's going to get rough, but there are a few good things in that game or I should say good ideas. Dmc 1, in my opinion, has the best atmosphere. Not just that, but what really sells this game for me are the enemies and how you deal with them, as you said the game gives you plenty of options. What did you think of the different enemy types by the way?

In my not so popular opinion they made Dante too edgy from 3 and on. This Dante has just enough silly and seriousness for me. Also, just the colour palette and level design speaks so much. But that ALSO being said, I do think the game was a necessary evil, because I think that it improved Devil May Cry 5 with a lot of things it brought to the table for sure. I no means think DmC is a bad game. I do think it's a pretty great game. But it's not Devil May Cry to me.

    • @@-Jooztin I think it's pretty childish to say that a game shouldn't exist. In an ideal world we'll have both DMC 6 and DmC 2, the latter one without the flaws of the 2013 version. Also I think that DmC had some interesting ideas and art-wise it was straight up more fascinating than the Capcom series. I'm not saying it's a better game, because it's not (my fave DMC is 5 btw), but I think it doesn't get enough credit.

    • @@omegazx7236 I know in late but statistically the game shouldn't exists. The series was selling well enough to not need a reboot and every step in the reboots development went the wrong way about it. It has no reason to exist. Now it exists, it's alright, but it should never have been made from a business decision.

  • DMC1 is actually really good and very underrated. It literally started its own sub genre and set the tone for the rest of the series. It’s definitely the most dark and had the most horror elements. The locations are great and boss fights are pretty good. Obviously it’s old and the camera angles isn’t great. But i still love the game.

  • I recently played this game for he first time earlier this month oddly enough and I completely agree with pretty much everything here. I'm somewhat easy to please though so once I started to get into a groove, I found myself really enjoying it, outside of the blob boss and Mundus. fuuuuuuck that space harrier-style section with the inverted controls. Looking forward to the video on 2, I plan on playing it too but am spacing it out so as to not get burnt out

It's so short that I actually do kind of want to go through it on hard mode, though I was worried about trying to contend with that fight on harder difficulties, so thanks for that heads up. You're right, the game really doesn't explain much of anything. I got stuck for almost a week on the first nero angelo fight cause I couldn't wrap my head around the combat mechanics though I once it clicked I just flew through the rest of the game. I enjoyed it a good bit but I couldn't blame someone for not liking it. Hyve's criticisms all seemed pretty valid

  • “ when it was originally supposed to be a resident evil game” me: is that why in the games concept arts there is a piece that has two babies that are just straight up in the umbrella logo, because that was weird when I saw it and now it makes a bit more sense. Still what a crazy and fucked up idea of Dante and Virgil were ever caught as babies by umbrella, I can tell you this it definitely would not end well for anyone!

    @wyattml1641@wyattml1641 Жыл бұрын
  • Lock on forces you and the enemy into a 2d plane where Dante will always be facing the enemy. Tilting a direction will contextually swap the Jump for another type of dodge based on the direction you are tilting (and yes Jump is a type of dodge, you don't even need to know it has I-frames): perpendicular outputs a (side) roll and straight outputs a (front/back) flip. I don't want to sound rude or demining, but having a dedicated dodge button is simply the player blaming the game for being bad as the issue is player-facing. This is the equivalent of pressing Jump when you meant Dodge in Sekiro. You knew the rules and have to simply admit it to get better. HOWEVER, it is not ENTIRELY player facing in DMC specifically 1 DUE to the abrupt camera angle shits disorientating the player. That is the real issue here and it has been adressed in 3.

    @catsoup9870@catsoup98704 жыл бұрын
    • I could have been clearer with my explanation in the video, but that's basically what I was saying. The contextual dodge would be fine if I had control over the camera. The camera is the real source of most of my gameplay issues in dmc1.

      @HyveMindsGames@HyveMindsGames4 жыл бұрын
    • Hyve Minds honestly once you master all those quirks, they become non-issues and simply are the challenges to playing the game stylishly/correctly. If you aren’t trying to s-rank the game, you’re kinda playing it wrong. Or at least you only have yourself to blame for it being “janky.” But shit, if I played a 10-years-later-sequel before the first one, it’d probably “feel” janky to me too. Especially when said sequel’s main problem was giving you too many solutions to too few challenges. Dmc1 actually nailed this ratio of tools to solutions perfectly if you take the time to master it, surpassed only by dmc3 in terms of tightness between narrative pacing (not to be confused with story pacing) and combat. Also, this game has amazing tone you’re crazy. You just seem to be hung up on exploration and the story far more than the actual focus of the game, which is combat. Problem is, you’ve been spoiled by modern combat systems which owe their very existence to the groundwork laid by this game. Check out m.kzhead.info/sun/lZmvZ7KEi2echmg/bejne.html if you want to see and hear a much more eloquently expressed (and definitely the best video on the game) explanation by matthewmatosis

  • 8:37 Yeah, the game's idea came from the original director, Hideki Kamiya's, thought of "what if Resident Evil characters hack and slash horrifying enemies instead of running away?" So DMC1 was their prototype, which changed the genre of action hack and slash, but Hideki left and DMC2 went to literal hell. It is DMC3 that Hideaki Itsuno, the current director, really polished and intensified the action in DMC franchise. Now it's hack and slash but with "style."
