  • The big issue with DMD is that it's clearly designed around the hyper-aggressive, old school arcade principles of DMC1 but dropped into games that absolutely weren't made to be played like that. I think a better DMD for the current style of games would give enemies massive damage resistance that fades away as you style up, forcing you to puzzle out a stylish way to handle each encounter.

    • that’s actually a really good idea, kinda similar to the DmC must style mode but that made enemies invincible until you get a top style rank. the idea of each rank making enemies less resilient sounds like it could make the games even more fun and give more of an extrinsic reward for styling

      @mickeybat5816@mickeybat5816 Жыл бұрын
    • The Ghost Rider game does exactly that. And let me tell you, it sucks. You will usually end with only one S Rank enemy remaining, and you have to do different attacks to rank up, but if he attacks you once or you take too long, you lose ranks. Sometimes you literally can't kill because you just can't reach rank S with only one enemy, so you have to restart the entire level

    • @@nearautomatons6987 Well for one the Super characters in DMC3 can be used without sacrificing score. In DMC5 using a Super character reduced your end score by 80%. Also for whatever reason Super Dante/Vergil in 5 dont have access to infinite SDT nor do they have the regenerating HP. In DMC3 Dante had a Super version that resembled Sparda and allowed him to have infinite Quicksilver and still regen HP while in DT while Vergil could turn into Nelo Angelo. Gained massive defense and could freely use Summoned Swords without losing DT and also still regen health.

      @xemnas500@xemnas500 Жыл бұрын
    • @@xemnas500 I would argue that the reduced score you get by using super characters is a necessity. In DMC3, you do get no penalties whatsoever for the use of super characters, however, these can be easily acquired by introducing a code that unlocks everything in the game. Considering the fact that super characters (especially Super Sparda and Super Corrupted Vergil) are busted as hell, there's no incentive to use normal characters over them, thus allowing anyone to use those costumes to cheat their way to get a SS Rank, which is the highest achievable rank in DMC3. So, essentially you could just use Super Sparda with infinite DT Explosion or infinite Quicksilver and destroy any semblance of difficulty from the game, where if instead there would be a penalty in place you would be forced to get good and learn how to properly tackle the mode with the base characters. Thanks to how it works in both, DMC4 and DMC5, you are forced to learn and engage with the combat system of each respective game in order to get a high rank, instead of going with Super Dante and spam Pandora's Box to insta-kill everything on screen. Not to mention another problem, Super Characters are buyable as per the release of DMC4SE, so if they would be the to-go option to turn the hardest difficulty into a breeze, that would technically make DMC a pay-to-win game. That would not be ideal in a game completely based around skill.

Also did you play turbo mode on dmd? He gets not only faster but also fights more complex and turbo mode actually makes the fight a dmc fight. Also you forget that you play with a dante that can use all styles without restarting the Mission lol. Dante is far stronger now. Royal guard is easier than ever and still as busted. And you run more than 2 weapons, have a 2nd devil trigger mode that is basically super saiyan 2, with SSS style thats even for free. Think about it bro, dmc3 vergil is more threating cuz the gap between them were bigger. Burning through every healing item and holy water I had, abandoning using devil trigger at all in favor of Quicksilver, falling so deep into flow state the world around mostly went away. Getting down to the last few hits, flinging myself at Vergil, getting countered. Swapping frantically to Cerberus while my non-gamer roommate shouted "Go! Go!". Having that last "Dante" come out in slow motion from the Quicksilver effect, still hitting buttons for the cerberus combo as the game transitioned to cutscene. The last fight with Vergil in 3 is easily one of the hardest in the franchise, if not *the* hardest full stop. And my god was it a beautiful cap to a beautiful game.

  • Since you didn't cover DmC, I'd like to bring up something legitimately cool that it does with its enemy Devil Trigger. When enemies pop DT, they gain insane hyper armor and health like expected, but certain moves in Dante's kit can ignore the armor or even outright remove the enemy DT. Off the top of my head: - Rebellion's perfect Drive - Arbiter's Trinity Smash - The end of both of Osiris' ground combos and perfect Raze - Any of Eryx's fully charged moves - Buy In and perfect Round Trip - E&I's perfect Ricoshot - Revenant's regular shot - Kablooey detonation with 6 darts (I think) This sort of creates a different playstyle from the lower difficulties where you have to make enough space and time to use your more powerful moves to remove enemy DT. This helps a ton because it brings enemy health back down to regular levels. Unfortunately, it kinda makes gameplay a bit repetitive, since you'll want to constantly be perfect charging everything (something you'll probably already do because this technique is also how you break enemies out of rage states). It also makes the color-coded enemies doubly annoying, even with the Definitive Edition's fixes. Sidenote on DMC4: Chimeras can be stunned with continuous gunfire, which prevents their blades from interrupting your combos. You can tell when the chimera seed turns a solid black. Still awful, but it saved a lot of headaches when I S-ranked DMD.

Behemoth’s at least you have Vergil and Nero and even Dante who have very strong individual moves and they move just slow enough to get a ton of damage, Proto they just deflect after a certain amount of moves hit them. • I feel like the best way to handle the mode in the future is to follow two strict rules: 1. The player should feel encouraged to play in their own way, rather than feeling railroaded into one single "optimized" or "safe" strategy. The mode should be about bringing out your own peak performance, not playing "correctly". 2. The mode should feel genuinely difficult, but fair. This should apply to every boss and every enemy. Every enemy in this mode should be balanced specifically to be a challenge without feeling like they've got some BS going on, even if that means that some enemies actually remain unchanged from a lower difficulty (such as enemies that can barely even hit experienced players and are basically just damage sponges.) In general, I feel like the mode should be designed specifically around being fun for experienced players rather than just making everything harder for the sake of being harder. If an enemy is already tanky and has a hard time dealing damage to the player, you don't need to apply the same flat boosted health and/or defense to that enemy. In fact, I'd encourage each enemy to be rebalanced individually in general rather than everything just having the same flat buffs, and for this to change dynamically depending on how many enemies are in the room at the same time. This way, hopefully the feeling of certain enemies just being a tedious pain to fight will mostly if not entirely go away, and the amount of fun the mode is can hopefully be maximized.

  • I like the damned chessboard, personally, and I think it's kinda neat on DMD, because having to go straight for the king as soon as possible and avoid killing the other pieces would be a unique challenge and killing the pieces one by one does make the fight wind down and simplifies it, whereas the chaos of almost all of them sticking around and attacking would be more exciting. Though maybe I'm not remembering correctly - can you avoid triggering enemy DT in that fight until the king becomes vulnerable? If not, that could make the fight drag, I suppose. I otherwise pretty much agree with the whole video. I generally like the idea of bosses going into a 'desperation mode' on DMD, but in DMC5, I found they get way too much damage resistance when they do. I think there comes a point where, if you're giving enemies more longevity, some changes are needed, so the fight doesn't feel like it's dragging for no good reason. I don't think every boss drags too much in 5, but, for example, what if King Cerberus, along with DT, also lit up all three of its heads, giving it access to its entire move set on the fly, without having to switch element with the explosion move? It would require at least some dev. work, and testing, so that the moves of the three elements don't combine in unfair ways, but otherwise, I think it would be a very easy way to make the fight more interesting on DMD and justify the added longevity. Now if they could and wanted to - DMD exclusive behaviors, moves and maybe some level design tweaks would be next level higher difficulty design if you ask me. I just want them to do a lot more with difficulties. It feels like there should have been way more experimentation on that front since the first DMC. Even if each game tried something different, like DMC3, I would've preferred that. For the record, I like using DT normally, and the novelty of DT explosion wore off for me pretty quick. Also, the annoying enemies getting massive buffs really isn't a worthy tradeoff for the DT explosion meta, imo. Thus, I think the original DMC has the best DMD. I think a relatively short, linear arcade action game is one of the best kind of games to do ambitious difficulty settings for, which is why I want such settings in future DMC games. I also find a strange dissonance, when DMC5, which is probably, mechanically the deepest in the series so far, on the player's side, has mostly some very basic and forgettable enemies. What I'm saying, is that I think that, if an enemy can put up a good enough fight, it makes it much more satisfying to deal with, then combo once you stagger it (assuming it has super armor, which is fine by me if it's well balanced), as opposed to basic punching bags that have a lot of life. Even enemies breaking out of combos can be good and appropriate if they're fun and threatening enough to fight. Everyone's favorite boss Vergil does that, they don't seem to mind, and of course they don't, because he wouldn't even function as well as a boss if he could be stunlocked. Kinda like Nero Angelo, as you showed. Then there's the Angelos in 5, which should have way more at their disposal, when you consider they're based on both Nero Angelo and 4's Angelos, each of which have more moves and behaviors than 5's Angelos do in actuality. Couldn't Protos at least do Nero Angelo's blue fireball move? That doesn't seem like an ability unique to Vergil. If there's the option of reflecting the fireball, maybe to instantly break their super armor - that'd also be a neat option. Heck, punches and kicks are hardly unique either, for that matter. They're also pretty slow to move and act, so their existing attacks aren't very threatening, so the unreasonable longevity Protos have on DMD is the only reason I even remember them other than the moniker 'Angelo', and that's not a good thing. I like Frosts a lot. I think they're a good balance of enough super armor that you don't immediately start juggling them, but also break out eventually once you do, so that you have to deal with their move set again and one Frost can provide enough of a threat, whereas an enemy that can be juggled endlessly would not, even with a very wide move set. I also quite like their set of ranged, melee and area attacks. It's not safe at any distance, and the ice mines that freeze you make you pay more attention to your surroundings. They're pretty well rounded and I've always enjoyed fighting them. I guess that's the other reason I would want enemies to get more moves on DMD in future games - it would make them more on par with what enemies like Frosts provide. At first I was gonna make this comment brief, but uhhh... here we are. Hope this is interesting enough to be worth reading. Heheh. Video greatly enjoyed. Subbed. Thank you. Have a nice day.

I remember in devil may cry three playing above normal and encountering an enemy that I would have seen further along in like mission three. I think that’s more directly related to going from normal to hard and not directly DMD, but it might’ve still been worth mentioning.

    @Clavitz1@Clavitz1 Жыл бұрын
  • Hello comment section; for any genuinely wondering how DMC2 DMD was like, I am here to share. It's honestly no wonder SHIKI didn't get to play DMC2 DMD, as it's extremely boring to play the game anyway but it would require game completion 5 separate times including the DMD run for him to have made an analysis on it, and I doubt it would've been a very insightful one either way considering there's not all that much to go through, despite the paragraphs below. Unlocking DMD: To unlock the mode, you must complete the game a total of four times; two for each playable character. There are two campaigns to play in DMC2. The game doesn't combine the two campaigns into one story like how it does with Nero and Dante in DMC4, instead, you either choose to play through the game as Dante, or as Lucia. Now obviously, most would choose to play as Dante because well.. It's Dante and everyone loves him and not this new one-off redhead (she's more important in lore but never appears outside of DMC2 in the game series). And in the long run, you get more out of Dante's campaign either way because there's more missions and thus more content, albeit, I'm not exactly sure if that's better or worse considering the game were talking about. Anyway, in the road of unlocking DMD, you don't really have a choice, as you have to play as both characters twice to unlock the harder difficulties. To explain, the difficulty system works like this: Beat the game with Dante & Lucia on normal, you unlock hard mode for both of them. Then you go and beat hard mode with Dante & Lucia, then unlocking DMD for the final playthrough. So yes, if you really want to be a completionist, you have to sit through this egregious game FIVE times at minimum. Gameplay: For anyone who's actually played this game and completed it ATLEAST once, you know how bad the combat feels, and why this game is marked as the "shooting simulator" that it is. Essentially, pressing that shoot button is gonna get you way further than doing sword damage because they are overpowered ESPECIALLY when used in devil trigger. Just go watch a speedrun of this game and you'll see what I mean. They even have it so that holding down the shoot button will automatically fire your guns; this is the ONLY game where that feature is present. The whole OP guns thing was an oversight on the devs part after seeing how weak they seemed in DMC1, (tbh, I think they were fine but maybe it's just me) and so they gave them a teensy buff that messed up the whole game. Anyway, as for melee combat, you're mostly stuck with the same three swing combo since the game doesn't tell you how to do any other combo. Its just so bland and boring and bad and boring and so doggy doodoo. All the bosses are made trivial with guns, although they do have stupid amounts of health in some cases, looking at the amalgamation in the last mission of Dante's campaign. The only boss that actually feels like a boss is Argosax himself the final boss. So... How does this all bode for DMD? Well.. It's uh... Shit! What a surprise, don't worry SHIKI, you saved yourself a bunch of trouble. All of the bosses have a health increase that is just WAY too much, and every single enemy and boss becomes 1000x more annoying. Some honorable mentions are the goats FUCK THOSE, the Trismagia boss, the Jokatgulm boss, Bolverk, and the literal worst boss ever made, the Tateobosu an underwater fight where the boss is invis 75% of the time! It's literally not worth your time to use your sword on any boss except those that are weak to it, which means in the end, it's just a long time of mashing a button over and over until shit dies. I did try and use my sword a lot, and I did succeed because you kinda can't fully rely on guns in DMD, thankfully, but a lot of the time I was stuck with guns. The Saving Grace: However, just as with every story like this, there's a hero. One single saving grace that filled me with just enough hope to push through it. The secret third playable character... Trish. For those unaware, Trish is a playable character in multiple DMC games (at least to my knowledge she can be played in 1 and 2) after beating the games on a certain difficulty. Now, unaware of which campaign I was going to do before realizing Trish existed, I was stumped on if I was even going to have the patience to do it, as the previous runs of the game already had me annoyed and quite frankly, some of the enemies and bosses were becoming less trivial and more like walls and hinderances. And then it was right in front of me. Trish came to fill my dark soul with LiIiGhHt, and I'm very glad she did. Upon deciding I would use her to test her out, I chose the Lucia campaign, as it is shorter and has less bosses, and even excludes one of the most annoying bosses Bolverk from her campaign (although subbed in for a genuinely more annoying one but whatever), I set out on my final run of the game, the last time I would ever have to lay eyes on it, excluding bloody palace for steam achievements. And oh my god, for some reason, Trish has ALL of Dante's DMC1 combos that they never game to him in DMC2 for some wild reason. It made the game feel JUST that bit more like itself and made everything like so much better. Actually getting to use combos was such a change of pace. And I guess for all of my hard work, it really paid off because, well, Trish's devil trigger is the most broken thing I have ever laid eyes on in a DMC game. Not even VERGIL himself compares to this. DMD boss wipes in mere SECONDS. It's on par with Dante's Majin DT (dk if I'm saying that right) that was added to him in DMC2 as an OP powerup; except, you don't have to go to low health to use it, you just pop it and it wipes the floor with anything and everything in it's way. And, as the final cherry on top, Trish's sword is the Devil Sword Sparda, which means it's actually a good source of damage. So yeah, Trish is OP and trivialized DMD and thank god because I was so ready to put down my controller. Final Thoughts: Honestly, shit game, shit campaigns, pain in the ass of a hard mode, honestly a joke. Take it from someone who willingly played the game five times in full. DON'T.

I believe they don't activate their whip attack instantly and Dante has a lot of high damage long range options like pandora, drive, and DT guns (I'm pretty sure the shotgun does a lot more damage if you pull it out in a combo). Basilisks are pretty fun once you realize how easy it is to royal guard projectiles compared to normal attacks. Dante is very versatile in 4 and can adapt to almost anything, which is why I kept going for s-ranks on 4 (also because of the achievement).

    • This is something I can understand. I like achievements/trophies so I would get S ranks for them. But people who do every S rank on every difficulty? I don't get it lol. I know 4 and 5 basically require it for 100%, but I wouldn't play them that much. Sadly don't like em enough to. I did 100% 1 though as it's my fav (thankfully it didn't require S ranking everything) and I may do 3 at some point

  • Dmc4 was so rushed that dante wasn't Even planned to be in the Game, that's why it feels so out of place in those missions

  • Imo I feel like what they can experiment with on the next dmc game is do what ninja gaiden black did and have unique enemies only show up on harder difficulties. Keep the stylish formula they have been doing for a long time now but have more enemy variety for engagements.

    • As cool as the newer enemies in NGB were the more you played it’s sadly abdesign philosophy that we probably won’t see again, NGB was made during a time when game costs weren’t as high so making enemies most player would NEVER see wasn’t that big a deal… then itsuno basically made devil trigger New Game plus exclusive so who knows he might be crazy enough to do it

  • I'd say 5 with 4 as a close second. The others make the enemies too tanky for my taste. Stylish play is close to the most optimum way to play in 5, but 1, 2, and 3 is a total slog if you aren't lame playing.
