AGING a 18th Century CHÂTEAU | How to Make STONE Look Old. Ep 87
Bonjour à tous,
This week at the château, Ash and Tracy try something new. Now both the entrance walls are complete and rendered both look a little to new and need to blend in with the original stone work around the château, so the pair get to work creating a mixture to age and weather the new stone work, but there will need a strong stomach to deal with it.

About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

Вы замечательная мама , у вас хорошие дети.
Think the walls look so much better than before
Ash, and Terry yous had me dry heaving watching and hearing you age the wall! If I smell something off I puke 🤮 immediately, I h8 it. It’s only started in my late forties and at 57 it’s gotten much worse. Idk how you weren’t puking 🤢🤣🤣 After all that mess, I pray those spores stick! Tracy, your a goddess, there’s nothing you can’t do or try and succeed. Your truly incredible. I’d be bedridden after 10 min of moving stones (boulders)! I’ve noticed since day one, you’ve all lost weight and gained more muscle. Everyday is a workout. But yous make it fun and do it together. God bless ♥️🇫🇷🏰⚜️☕️🫖👏
Your dog is also an escellent worker, always digging next to you.
Whoopee, can’t wait for Sunday.
That was quite funny. I woke up this morning at 5.30am to find the man was spraying the outside of my house for spiders ...(no wind at that hour). As I wasn't sure which day he would come because of the wind factor, I had left a couple of windows open. So the smell of bug spray was right through the house. Made a coffee, turned the computer on, and for the next half hour you lot were heaving on one side of the camera and I was heaving on the other!! So now I am spider-free and you lot are growing moss!!! Cheers.
OMG! I was dying. Tracey your the boss! Lol laughing the whole time while the men are gagging! 🤣🤣🤣💯‼️
Haha. It was good fun :)
FYI, you can save yourselves a step if you have an old blender. Add moss to yogurt concoction and blend moss into it, then paint it on. Works pretty well. Loved watching the video...had me chuckling the whole time you were outside - I remember that smell! Thank you!
@2roddman2- Agreed, put the entire concoction into a blender, then paint it on the stone. I saw this method done years ago on a landscaping show. As a follow up, you will have to mist the moss regularly to keep it from drying out. If it dries out, it will not grow on the stone. It will take a few weeks until you see results.
exactly what I was going to write about the blender much easier .
@@graciemaca6996 Oh the smell lingered for days! I did some concrete planters for alpine plants with the yoghurt mix and it worked beautifully, I think it took about 6 weeks to get going but once it did the concrete just looked like old stone over time
I was gonna add the same comment!
Me too!
I followed Martha Stewart’s recipe 15 years ago for aging terracotta:clay pots. Buttermilk and moss. Worked so well, I’ve been scrubbing those pots for 14 years and the mossy stuff still grows back.
I had success with that method too! My project was a small one. I love moss and especially when it blooms.🤞🏼for gate project.
I do the same thing! Ms. Martha has a surefire way to grow moss!
It looks good already!
Wonderful and creative, that what you all are, and Rodney below is right, saves you a step. Results are coming! it already looks good. 😀💓
The look of concentration on his face brill
I love Lord Patrick's hat. It suits him very well!
so exited to see what's up un sunday
I can’t tell you how much I look forward to Wednesday and Sundays, I enjoy your videos seeing your progress and having a laugh. Bless you all.
The “aged” side looks much better, and it will only get better. Crack on!
Yur great work is leaving a magnificent proprty. I love it!!!
I laughed out loud when I saw the dogs licking off the yogurt and ash mixture. 🤣 Dogs don’t mind a bad smell. 😁
We laughed to 😂😂😂
Brilliant ideas to age the new walls and posts. Why is it so funny Ash gipping🤣🤣 I find it absolutely hilarious. Made my night🤣🤣 Bravo Ash xx
I hear that this technique works for aging stone so I can't wait to see the results over time. It was gag worthy for sure LOL 🤣 There will be so much to see on everyone's channel and I am happy about that!
Lol the borderline gagging was to funny. Reminds me of some of the jobs we’ve gotten into over the years. One in particular involving an unplugged freezer….. the new walls ages are going to look fantastic!
I didn’t even know that you could age things like stone walls! How amazing, brilliant video as usual, Tracy loved your reaction Ash, much love to this wonderful family xxxxxxxxxxxxx😘❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The results of rendering already blend the new with the old. Great work!!
What a great idea to age the new walls. It will look great when it all settles and naturalises.
Is that a new puppy? It is gorgeous.
So great and funny…love this episode!!!
You never know what will be happening in your blogs!!
Too funny. Tracey didn't erp once! An ex-boyfriend was teaching me how to gut a deer and I nicked the bowel. I was so confused when he ran away gagging the whole time (and him being a retired tough Green Beret). Didn't bother me none. I had to deal with pregnancy-induced odd food cravings and barfed at the sight of other foods which were normal recipes, baby poo, farm animal smells, exposed to all of it. I thoroughly enjoyed how y'all reacted to it. We call it Ralph'ing and Earl'ing, because those are what the sounds are translated to in English. And y'all did it again the next day. Great job.
The stone aging really worked!! Well done!
Brilliant idea! At first I was hesitant about this idea but it's truly magnificent, Great job team. I am looking forward to Sundays reveal. Blessings.
I was going to say the same. Natural yoghurt and put moss in a blender to break up the moss spores. Martha Stewart has been doing it for years and it really works. Just paint it on an you will see great results. Good luck.
Can't wait until Sunday and so good that you can't smell it from behind the desk lol that stuff that you put on the walls well anyway thanks for sharing 😊🌹🏵🥀🌻
I think the old natural ways you are using to age the look is great, after all for centuries we have been dying wool and cloth with natural plants so why not walls. Its going to look great. Thank you, keep up the grwat work. 💕🇦🇺
You'll be power washing those walls next year!
Ash your face was hilarious, i was thinking aww i really like the white but now youve done yr bit i really like the finish and they'll only get better xxx
You two were just like a pair of naughty school children concocting in the chemistry lab but having such fun! Hope you've recovered from the fumes...
Hi everyone, Ash & Tracy my grandson was dry reaching watching you getting the concoction of yogurt & milk ready 😂 to paint on the wall’s, &/Ash when you said it smell’s like baby sick he turned 🤢 literally 😂 Take care lots of love 🥰❤
😂😂😂😂😂
I watch a lot of château KZhead and your grand salon last year for Christmas was the most beautiful one out of all the Château that I watch
I really 😢like the walls looking new
It’s the perfect time of year to do it. It is going to be green soon. You can spray just yoghurt on it and it doesn’t have to be old.
You really go the extra mile with your restoration wow. Loved Patrick licking the yogurt on the wall lol
Great video. Your mom is a delight!
The pillars look great!!! Well done.
You can actually put some of the moss with the milk/yogurt solution into a blender and then brush it onto the walls. Makes a small amount of moss go a long way and it takes less time applying it. And you are correct, the new walls looked way too new and out of place.
That is what I would do as well 😊
Worked great for me on a new concerte statue 🇨🇦😁
I did exactly that with terracotta pots. Worked too well for me! Even bleach hasn’t stopped it!
Omg 😱 I never laughed so hard it was so so funny 😂 to watch them one of the dogs 🐕 was licking the wall 👅 it was hilarious 😂….Thank You for the humor I truly needed a laugh my life has been a nightmare lately
It's going to look fabulous once the moss grows and I've seen the yogurt mix used before. They already suit the Chateau better.
I came in late😢. But I wish you, Tracy, Tony, Terry, Ash & Jonathan, a wonderful Thanksgiving.🥰🦃🍁🍂
Look forward to seeing the results of this aging process. I’m sure the winter weather will help as well. Johnathon was right into it.
I have had success growing moss on a concrete block wall by putting buttermilk and chunks of moss in a blender, then use a paint brush to apply the concoction on the wall. Just a thought if you need to do some more walls.
Yes, I agree buttermilk or yogurt plus moss in an old blender make a good starter for moss. !I have also used it and it does work.
That was great!!! I love how you guys just go for it and aren't afraid to try something new....it will probably look amazing as time goes on. Well done and look forward to the Spring once everything has aged a bit.
Well done Ash and Tracy you have done a great job and it does look great, over at our local common they did that on the mansion house after they had to renew a wall and it looks aged now after a year thanks for the vlog look forward till Wednesday keep well all of you xx
The aging process is a great idea. I’m sure the new walls along the drive will look amazing in the spring. Your group shows no fear trying new experiments. That makes the vlogs fun and interesting. Looking forward to Sunday’s reveal!🤗. Touring about France during Christmas season will also be wonderful👏🏻👏🏻
If you wear paint respirator masks, you won't be able to smell any of that. It's amazing how effective they are. No odors get through the filters.
Laughing out load at the gagging and coughing 😂 Ash=Rank 🥴. Stay warm and cozy.
I am so looking forward to the reveal of the 3rd floor. It’s so lovely to see your progress, because it’s done so lovingly. 😊
You've certainly given us a lot of great things to look forward to!
It's going to look great 👍🤗🤗 Love Sue❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤
What a great idea! Jonathan is loving that mucking around....perfect job for a young boy!
Am excited to see how this works. Have a couple of small sculptures I would like to “age”.
you did the right thing, it takes a vision and time and the rendering will be great. don't look at short term comments- look at long term results. All my Love and support
Thanks Shirley
I wouldn’t go drinking that coffee now! 😳🤣
Great idea, the walls are looking aged already
I have heard that sponging stone with dilute yoghurt encourages algae and moss. The idea of a natural stain from leaves, sounds good too.
Looks so good
LOL certain puppies appeared to be licking the walls - also someones coffee was a little close to the concoction which made me giggle too
You can whiz the moss with the yoghurt in a blender or a drill with mixer then spread in the area you want growth
Like the idea of making them old like the rest of the stone work!!!
Gonna get some shut-eye, and hopefully watch this before work. Weathering is one of my favorite forms of art!
Will hopefully see you soon 🥰
@@chateaudelalacelle what time is premier ad I'm in Australia and it would be early morning here thankyou
@@chateaudelalacelle Stunning! It might not seem like you've done much, but that small investment into those walls will pay off big later. And the best part about weathering is that it's a game of adding on and taking off, so each new thing gives new and different character to your piece. After you try those dank leaves on the other wall, you may find yourself running to add that to the front as well.
So looking forward to the show.
You've got sweet chestnuts in amongst the leaves. Great for roasting on an open fire. Remember collecting them with my Ma and Pa to make chestnut stuffing. I spent a whole week taking spikes out of my fingers (like splinters). Never again. I now buy them vacuum packed. But, there must be an easier way to get them out of their protective spiny casings.
Yogurt and skyr make up a sizeable component of my protein intake along with cheese, beans, grains and eggs. While I'm not exactly vegan nor vegetarian, meat is not consumed daily and fish even less so. Though I must confess a certain fondness for both. So, what does this have to do with the video? Well, there have been times when a small container of yogurt has found its way to the back of the fridge, only to be discovered months later. It takes a long time for yogurt to "go off" but once it does, the smell is quite overwhelming. Tracy, Ash and Jonathan, I applaud you for your strong stomachs in tolerating the odor. Terry, you too, since you must have caught more than merely a whiff while operating the camera. Your collective dedication to detail in restoring the Château is amazing!! Thanks so much for sharing it!! 👍 P.S. Hello to Tony as well!! Chuck
It already looks aged. I’ve done that with buttermilk and moss. So glad you didn’t get sick.
I have a special blender I use to blend compost and use it as fertilizer. Garage sale special. That would work for the moss
Looking forward to seeing the wall transformation should be interesting I could almost smell it lol x
Hello from Nashville, Tennessee! Martha Stewart says to mix buttermilk and moss in a blender and paint it on and keep it moist for moss walls, stone figures, and outdoor pots! I hope your way works too! It's a new one for me! Stay warm!
I've seen similar videos where a woman used buttermilk and moss in a blender to make a paste and poured it on logs in her yard to make them look old. The moss actually grew on the logs.
Well hello Happy family Good to be at a premiere. Hi Patrick and Stuart also.
Thanks Christine :)
I have been watching you all now for 1 1/2 years and I’m amazed at how magnificent the Château the cottage and the gardens are looking. One day I hope to be able to visit I’m only in Hungary so it’s a driveable distance
The walls look amazing. Don't worry they will be fantastic x
Very interesting. I think it’s going to look great! Cant wait until spring.
Great idea it’ll tie in better with the Chateau backdrop ❤
Missed your live stream (at my annual mammogram!) It will be interesting to see how well your aging techniques progress. You might find a spot where you can test the moss/buttermilk or yogurt smoothie technique. For the bad smell: try a menthol muscle rub just below your nose. Works beautifully.
Good job on ageing the walls 👏👏👏👏
Thanks Monica :)
Lol A play date😂🤣 This was Sooo funny Lol, I did something similar recently with a mud mix to dull down new mortar. Thought the family were going to sign me in 😂
This was so fun to watch and I can’t wait for the results. You’re so creative! Got a chuckle over Terry gagging in the background, too - sorry Terry! 😅
Haha. Thank you.
Something that would help is to take a stone grinder and just gently soften some of those shape edges and lines so it looks weathered and that the rain and time has smoothed the stones.
What an exciting and creative project. Can hardly wait to see how the moss will be progressing.
I’m wondering if you could mix the moss with liquid in a food processor or blender and add that to the water bucket? It looks great. Way less bright. Goes better with the house now
Another Wow, For Sunday, Can’t Wait 😊👏👏👏❤️
Strong coffee and tea bags can be added to water as well for tannins
I cast reproduction staddle stones with a mixture of cement, vermiculite and peat moss (hypertufa). The hollow base is made in a plywood mold and the top is cast in wet sand. Before the concrete has hardened I scarify the surfaces with a wire brush. After that, I pour buttermilk over the base and top and wait for nature to do the rest.
Great idea :) something we will have to look at for future projects :)
Wow! I’d love to buy one or two. But hard to get to Australia though I’d say lol.
Would be great for the chalet builds.
The walls look great already. You kept apologising for the look but I think they’re an improvement. Don’t forget to mist them! I look forward to the video reveals and the Xmas videos and your chateau decorations! 😍👏🏻👏🏻
I'm bad with smelly stuff so good on you for touching it out.The walls will look great.Moss loves damp stone and water. I look forward to seeing what the leaves will do to the balustrade. I do like it white and clean. If you wanna soften it why not use creepers.
Looks better already! By spring, things should be grand.
You guys are all so cute together, what a great time we have watching and they do look much better already, even though they aren't set...awesome job family...I imagine we'll all still be here watching through the years for the great procession of the aging moss updates...have fun...!
Brilliant idea! They look better all ready.
Thank you
I think it is amazing how quickly it changed from looking super new to rather old and cragly.
Yes it works, I mixed moss and buttermilk than painted it. Look great.
Thank you Patricia
I would like to see all the wrought iron fencing painted may be grey would be the best colour but it would be better than letting it rust away
Too cool, lots of fun. Love you guys.
Thanks Patricia :)
Blend moss with buttermilk in a blender and paint it on all areas you want to grow moss. It will spread on its own with time but it will be tough if it is full sun. Moss requires moisture and shade.
