The fact that they waited over 6 weeks to let the public know and to get help to search for her and the fact that they so quickly wrote her out of the will and essentially asked the police to stop looking for her, seems to make me think as though the family was involved with their disappearance.
Yeah , they asked the cops to stop looking just 4 months after she vanished , very suspicious, in that situation I would wait atleast a year before even considering to stop investigating.
Or that they realized the failed abortion was true, and didn't want the scandal of it so wanted to let the story fade.

This is the best logical theory I've ever seen.

If she died getting an abortion and her family discovered that later on, maybe they wanted to save their reputation and honor or whatever. Which would make sense why they would want the case closed only after 4.5 months. It’s 1910 after all and if something like that was to be discovered, it wouldn’t have looked good, especially in the upper east side.

My theory: When Dorothy met up with George a couple months before she disappeared, she got pregnant. 2 months later she realised she couldn’t hide her pregnancy for much longer, and couldn’t have her parents find out, especially with George being the father. She went to get an abortion in secret, using dress shopping as her excuse, however she did not survive the abortion. #postmortem

That's what I'm thinking, too. The weird way she responded to her mother when her mom asked to come along for dress shopping sounds suspicious, imo. It's as if Dorothy was suddenly panicked her mom would insist on coming along, ruining Dorothy's plan to have the abortion, and so she just said what came to her mind to try and get her mom off her back. Also, maybe her reason for carrying so much money with her on that day was to pay out-of-pocket for the surgery. The chocolates and book, too, sound like things she could've been buying to help comfort herself, knowing she was going to have the medical procedure done. All in all, it's a sad but quite plausible outcome.
Abortions were illegal back then, and a lot of women died because of it. What a crazy theory, love it.
Oh, to add to the theory, maybe the family did eventually find out about the circumstances of her death through a private investigator, and that is why they started asking for the police department to stop investigating the case... Considering it was the 1910s they'd most likely prefer Dorothy to be remembered as a murder victim who was kidnapped than a woman who died getting an abortion since it would have damaged the family's name :/

I kind of want to see Shane and Ryan cover the disappearance of Theodosia Burr. It's a fascinating case and it was a big deal at the time because she was such a prominent figure in the colonies. It was a high profile case because she boarded a ship and the ship itself disappeared without a trace, along with her, the captain, and a friend of Aaron Burr's. I would highly recommend anyone interested in American history to look it up. There were actual novels and poems written with theories about what happened.
Here's my theory: It's really suspicious that the parents took so long to make the investigation public, and so quick to stop searching and write her out of their will. I think Dorothy and George were in love and/or knocked up, which would have been a huge embarrassment for the parents, so maybe the parents told them to disappear and gave them enough money to go start a life somewhere far away #postmortem

I think if they did know she ran away, it would be a little difficult to keep that covered up. Keep in kind there were more than a couple private investigators looking for her, at some point or another somebody would have probably stumbled on her. I think she definitely ran away. George was in Italy when she was missing, and she had those pamphlets for the cruise ships that take you to Europe. She could have easily assumed another name and met him in Italy where they could Elope. And the family found this out, so they wrote her off the will so she could never come back. She seemed to be a romantic. She was an author and a poet, and the last thing she did before disappearing was pick up a romance book.
so here's a theory: her brother John killed her in order to become the sole beneficiary of the family fortune. he knew about Dorothy and George's relationship and since no one liked him, John decided to implicate him. George had been vacationing in Europe at the time of her disappearance, so John planted the Europe travel pamphlets in Dorothy's bedroom to suggest she eloped. John goes to Florence and punches the crap outta George, really sell the idea ya know? meanwhile he eats some great lasagna, sees some lovely Italian countryside, enjoys his new only child lifestyle, then goes back home to slowly convince his parents Dorothy is never coming back, and by April badda bing badda boom he's got the money baby #postmortem #gotem

Another theory: Dorathy seemed fairly demanding and she was engaging with a man her family did not approve of and didnt want to pay a dowryto this family. So what if they arranged a kidnapping of their own daughter?? They wrote her out of their wills and hired detectives to make themselves look innocent. Either she accidently died or they paid her off to dissapear .

Family and friends will search for DECADES to find missing loved ones. So, the fact that the Arnold family gave up looking for their daughter after only 4 months has me going 🤨 My guess is that the family did in fact know something more about what happened to her, though if they're trying to avoid a scandal, they won't tell anyone. Especially if it's 'family business', because any of that STAYS in the family.

Usually I expect BuzzFeed Unsolved to give me at least some info that other sources like Cold Case Detective didn't cover, but this time I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong, this was easily one of the funnier episodes, but I find it really weird how this version goes "AFAIK her home life was happy" when Cold Case Detective (unless it was another channel) gave details about how Dorothy was an author who was unsuccessful getting her stories/poems published and her family kind of bullied her about it, being very discouraging to her trying to pursue her dreams. That still doesn't explain why she didn't take anything with her except the $30, but it provides a compelling motive for her to run away. I'm not saying this version is wrong, but I do find the versions with more details tend to be more accurate. Also this is just a little thing in comparison, but Cold Case Detective said Dorothy was actually buying the dress for her little sister, not for a party for herself, so that's kind of odd.
