  • Dr Sam had several ounces of sand in his pockets when he was unclothed at Bay View hospital. His temperature was so low that 2 thermometers couldn't get a reading. His skin was completely clammy and clothing was soaked. He was shaking so badly that x-rays could not be taken without changing the aperture of the machine. He was incontinent with a swollen face and several loose teeth amongst his other injuries. Some of his reflexes were missing, caused by nerve damage from the blow to the back of the neck. Shame on Dr Samuel Gerber (Cuyahoga County coroner) and Louis Benson Seltzer (Cleveland Press editor) for railroading this man and essentially his family.

Why would a burglar take time to murder a woman but not the male, who is the greater threat? The victim was pregnant and Sam was having an affair. The murder weapon was never found. But the outline of a scalpel was left on the bed. No forced entry. Sam took a nap after the incident, then called the mayor instead of the police.

    • His story doesn't make any sense. The killer who couldn't possibly know that Sam couldn't identify him would certainly have killed him also, especially given that he managed to knock him out twice. And Marilyn's screams would have likely woken up their young son. That didn't happen. On the other hand, there was some forensic evidence to corroborate elements of his story such as the beach chase and more importantly the blood on the closet wasn't either his or Marilyn's. I wonder if it was something else entirely though. What if Marilyn was actually having an affair with the handyman Richard Eberling? Perhaps as a revenge against Sam for his affair which she knew about? She was with him upstairs when Sam, groggy from his nap, found them and started slashing away at Eberling and his wife even as Eberling tried to use her as a human shield. Eberling managed to break away(but not before Mary bit him reflexively) and fled while Sam took a break to grapple with the shock of what he had done. Then he started chasing after Eberling in the beach to kill him as well until he managed to get knocked out Why did he not name Eberling? Because that would provide the prosecution a motive for him to kill his wife and of course Eberling would testify against him(and also expose him as a cuckold) If he didn't name Eberling, he would not come forward as he had nothing to gain from it except turning himself into a suspect. Later on, with nothing to lose, Eberling took pity on Sam and gave a fake death bed confession to make his acquittal a little easier

    • Fewer things are harsher than the court of public opinion. Also, it’s not just in the USA, the idea of “innocent until proven guilty” is a hallmark of justice systems. That is what a trial is for. It gives the prosecution the chance to prove that the defendant is guilty beyond any reasonable doubt. Still, while the burden of evidence lies with the prosecution, it is sometimes up to the defense to look for new theories because if the authorities are so certain the defendant did it, they neglect evidence that could prove otherwise.

    • Also, the fact that she was pregnant was interesting. She could have been having an affair with/been assaulted by the handyman, resulting in a pregnancy. The handyman could have found out and, not wanting his actions to be revealed, killed her to get rid of both her and her unborn child.

    • I'm not trying to defend him, but the media was on everyone's tails, and he could have easily found out little details like that from the media. My theory is that maybe Sam hired the handyman as a hitman in exchange for the cocktail rings since he could have possibly known that the handyman had killed before since they were close. And like @elementsfannfics3859 states, it could have easily been a murder to cover up an affair.

My dad actually was contacted by a couple reporters when The Fugitive came out because they thought he was related to Sam Sheppard. He had just moved here from Ireland so there was literally no connection. We both find this case interesting cause it feels almost personal. It’s what got me interested in true crime too :)

Thats either a subliminal, Freudian confession or really freakin sad that he was called that for so long while in prison as an innocent man that he relented and just embraced it
