I actually agree with ryan on this one, having a place with missing people look completely normal is way more creepy than full of blood and stuff. Bc upon seeing gory mess you'd just be like, "ok, there was a murder, yikes", but people just VANISHING without a trace spooks me
It’s insane. It’s eerie, and horrifying.
Ok, there was a murder, but people just Vanishing without a trace spooks me
Yeah, people vanishing like they fell into some random black hole on their way somewhere creeps me out. Same with bodies that have been around, sometimes hidden in plain sight, and not discovered for years. Even worse when we don't even know how they died let alone who they are. Also, murders/disappearances that happen in the middle of nowhere and are never solved. A couple of examples: even though most have been identified and it's been partially solved (though it took over thirty years), The Bear Brook Murders still greatly disturb me. Same with the murders in and around Mineral, Washington.

WAITTTJSHJDDHK AHAHHA YOURE RIGHT LMAOAOA
I mean, he didn’t really dismiss that theory because when Shane said it couldn’t have been waves because they reported everything was fine afterwards, Ryan explicitly stated that that isn’t necessarily true because of the reason you said.
Would the logs not have been wet and caused the writing to be hard to read? Cause if it was a wave I don’t think the logs or much in the lighthouse would have been found cause if it can take bodies, it can take a book.
I looked it up and they really should’ve emphasized more about how these logs were probably fake. They made it seem like they were likely legitimate, but it seems like this is just a rumour that spread.

U G H In that one sound there is so much damn emotion
tbf that was my exact reaction too.
My reaction whenever Ryan mentions ghosts or aliens tbh
What they don't mention in this video is that Ducat was fined roughly a week's wages earlier for not affixing the boxes to the moorings properly. My theory is that he didn't want to risk another fine so took Marshall down to do the repairs (the faults having been noted in the log) and left Marshall behind in the lighthouse (as per the rules). It was at that point that Marshall saw the huge wave coming and rushed out, not bothering to don his coat, to warn the other two. But he got there just as the wave struck and all 3 were washed out to sea. It was later noted that a large rock had been dislodged in that area by an "unknown force" and moved some 150 feet. Which gives you an idea of how powerful the wave was. So the tragedy happened primarily because the head keeper didn't want another fine - and he timed the visit to the cliff edge just as the freak wave came hurtling towards the island. (ps - I'm Scottish, from that area, and your impersonations were the worst I've ever heard! Worth watching just for that!).
This is a great theory!!!
Honestly This one makes more sense then the ones in the video💀

Fun fact: The log books were actually made up much later as a dramatic retelling of a story in a magazine, so the men still being at the lighthouse after the storm occurred couldn’t have happened. The most likely reason for their disappearance was because they were going after a toolbox that they accidentally left out, and would suffer a paycut as they were fined if anything was lost or damaged. And considering one of the lighthouse managers lost a piece of equipment in a storm before and was fined for it, it would make sense for them to go out so they wouldn’t get punished due to their meager salary of 42 shillings.

I don't get why one of the theories isn't that there was an unknown boat that came in contact with the island, they asked the keepers for help, they rushed out (explaining missing coat) but it was actually a trap. The boat would have been a pirate boat looking to take 3, un-watched, strong, and good for manual labor men who they could sell in the labor market or just keep for themselves.
Surely if pirates kidnapped them there would be signs of violence or struggle
@@Aidan_7 not necessarily, If the men jumped on board to help or if they were in the water already. The waves could have also washed away any sign of struggle.
@@justaname4136 you're right!
But two of the light keepers are experienced and falling for pirates easily would be unreal, depends if they were really drunk or been hallucinating at that time. One of them should have given a sign like writing on the log or an emergency signal like the disc or smtng. Cause it came also to my mind that kind of theory but being an experienced lighthouse keeper can make you think all possible things that might happen in the lighthouse and later on think of ways to prevent it. They took the risk of the job which i guess should have made them at least prepared especially that they have family.
@@jessicastjames6202 dude, slavery and pirates still exist today
i don't know, i'm a sailor myself. i have over 5 years of sailing experience and any knowledge i have on how the ocean behaves is half estimation and half fact. is it unlikely for an extremely large wave to come up suddenly and wash away three fully grown men after a huge storm? yes, but it feasibly COULD happen. if they were outside checking to see if the storm was gone or working outside, the storm could've had one final fit and got them. i definitely believe that they were briefly checking outside on the status of the storm, hence the coat being left behind, and they were blindsided. the fact that there had been prior 300 ft waves and they were at 110 ft- it's possible.
The western landing showed signs of damage and areas above 200ft also showed damage from either a wave or the storm. Near the west landing was a box in which gear was stored and one of the keepers had previously been fined for not securing properly in a previous storm. They were almost definitely blown off or swept away.
It could’ve also been something as simple as all 3 of them falling from the iron railing. Iron is especially prone to rust from salt water, and maybe they all leaned on it to talk about whatever, and their combined weight made it give way. Falling 50 feet into water can potentially break bones, so 110 feet wouldn’t have made for a fun landing. Then, the current could’ve swept them further out to sea. Admittedly, it would be odd for all 3 of them to fall with it, but not impossible.
Yeah, I think to this day we don't actually know why Rogue waves happen.
Based on Shane and Ryan's respective rhyming skills, Shane better hope he's with Ryan if they ever come across a clan of water sprites otherwise it's curtains for Shane.

sure but rogue waves only really happen in the middle of the ocean, they need to draw energy from the surrounding waves and the closer you get to shore the less energy there is in the wave
@@dannytwomey9071 There are already records of 300ft waves hitting the island and the keepers said there was a storm (something supported by Mackenzie not being able to see the lighthouse for over a week), so I don't think lack of energy is really an issue here

I'm only two minutes in, so maybe it's already been covered in the episode, but *as a farmer*, it is more common for sheep (and goats, for that matter) to give birth to twins than single babies. We have a fairly small flock, but it's generally expected that we'll get at least one set of triplets every couple years. It's more likely that having sheep graze on the island benefited them because when you have a flock on the same pasture for a while, the nutrients in the grass decrease, and the parasites in it increase. You have to switch sheep to different pastures every few months to keep them on good grass and keep the parasites down.

An interesting thing to look into would be if this area, or the ocean area around this island is prone to seaquakes. Especially since geographically it isn't that far off iceland, which is a volcanic region, maybe a sea quake occured that cause massive waves coupled with a storm. The men thought the storm had subsided, only to be surprised by a massive tsunami like wave. It would explain why they were outside despite there being stormy weather. Maybe they tried retrieving the swept away resources and they were surprised by that wave.
Finally a logical explanation!
Quakes in Scotland are rare most occur along the Great Glen and Highland boundary fault and rarely reach 5 on the Richter scale. I live in that area and have only felt one in my life that barely shook anything. Flannen Isles are only 18 miles off the Hebrides and I cannot find a single recorded earthquake there! There is nothing scarier than the mysterious disappearance of people when they are in an area that they are already considered experienced in that area
This is a fascinating story. What could possibly have happened to the three lighthouse keepers? I think the fact that one of them went out without his jacket could mean whatever happened was sudden. What makes the most sense is that they were somehow swept out to sea, but how? This is one of those mysteries I unfortunately don’t think we’ll ever have the answers for.

Especially when you take into account; A) that's the North Sea they are in, and waves get HUGE, over 100ft. is not unusual, B) the lamp they were using was floated on a LOT of mercury so it moved without friction, and part of the duties would be to keep that pool of mercury clear of debris and refill it as needed. Due to the amount of mercury vapors inhaled, many lighthouse keepers went mad...just like hat makers, and for the same reason, inhalation of poison gas. If you want to see what the North Sea can be like, check out a few videos from bigwavemaster. He is on a 110ft. rescue boat in the North Sea, and posts videos of storms, shipboard life and some of the drills and real rescues they do. That piece of water is known for its storms and waves. The fishing boat Andrea Gail, (Storm of the Century) was out there during a major hurricane and was lost with all hands. ✌😸
@@PhoenixLyon This is probably the most educational comment I've read all week. Cheers!
I think science kinda figured it out by now. we know now about rogue waves, which are way bigger than an average wave, which in the North Sea is already bigger than average. plus, if it happened at night, they probably wouldn't have seen it until it was pretty close and too late to hunker down. it sounds insane to think a 300ft wave could sneak up on anyone, but the ocean is a terrifying place with immense power we are barely beginning to understand. back then, I bet that would've sounded ludicrous, but today, we have footage of such waves.

As an animal science major-I laughed at the “magic grass makes sheep have twins” Sheep give birth to twins like 90% of the time magic grass or not
Yeah, I get the feeling the farmers were like, "Anybody using this grass? No? HAVE AT IT, SHEEP!"
And sometimes you wish they didn't...
You say that, but maybe all grass is magic.
Shhhhhh magic grass 😌
Do they really!? That's crazy, I didn't know that.
Very odd how the clocks stopped, was it a coincidence that they broke or did the keepers stop them before they left? Can’t think of any other explanations
If they needed wound, they must've wound them all at the same time so then they'd stop at the same time (or approximately).
Maybe the clocks got water damage in one of those big freak waves that swept the light keepers away, then dried out over the course of the two weeks it took for the lookout to report the light was out.
Ye olde wind-up clocks, eh? Gotta wind them up every now and then or they top.
They wound down & stopped after the men disappeared. I have a mantle clock which needs wound once a week.
Thank you guys, the clocks was the one thing I couldn't really connect to a rogue wave or pirates or something, but I totally forgot that clocks would have needed to be wound back then XD
This is still the best True Crime episode. The energy they have from finally being back together after the VID lockdown is shining.
For the post mortem: As a person who lives on a coastal town in Scotland the fact that one of them went out without a jacket in December and how their logs said it was cold makes me confused because If you’ve lived on a coastal town in the winter the wind is freezing and you know better something else happened on that island
I agree!
I wear a jacket even in the summer time cause it’s still cold 😂
That is unusual. But if the situation was so dire and someone request his help, he might not have had time to retrieve it.
@Denix Vames But if there was a storm there wouldn’t have been silence? Although maybe if the silence did make them go mad they could have imagined the storm.
@Daniel it just doesn’t sit right with me and the fact that the fire wasn’t burned for a while none of it sits right with me
Shane’s expressions during his impeccable Scottish accent absolutely cement the headcanon that he is Ryan’s Guardian Demon™️
I feel like Steven knows and covers for Shane’s demon tendencies a lot
Yup But Shane is what Makes Demons at Bay
"If you're Scottish and offended at this point, you should be" -Ryan
Is he muzan kibutsuji or something?
Shane’s face at 8:13! He was so done when Ryan mentioned “Alien Juice” I had to stop the video because I had a laughing fit. “Is that where this is f**king going?” Man is so disappointed. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
My words in a rap battle with a sprite would be “You are a sprite To death you will choke And I’ll throw you away Because I prefer Coke”
I am indeed a sprite One of the very best I got that nice green shade And a lemony zest
I love that Shane thinks ghosts and ancient aliens are nonsense, but he’s willing to shrug off Scottish sheep magic like it’s nothing

for post mortem: Hey ghouligans! I'm from the Isle of Lewis (mentioned in the video) and I studied this in school! One thing that wasn't mentioned was that when investigators came upon the scene inside the lighthouse, the dinner was ready and untouched at the table, and a chair was toppled over as if it was all left urgently. He also left his coat behind which adds to this theory. Great to have the boys back, Happy spooky season! x
That’s a really interesting detail. I hope they mention this in the pm. Did you leave this under there pinned comment to just to be safe?
I agree with the person above me! This comment is great and you should definitely put it under the pinned comment at the top. Hopefully the boys will see this because this is a great detail!!
They kinda proved that was probably false, though; someone made features like that up a few years after they disappeared.
#postmortem (to raise your chances of this being seen hopefully)
My teacher told us about this in primary school and scared the crap out of me lol 😆
i believe shane’s theory. they were a throuple, left the island and lived happily ever after
Well I guess the only unbelievable thing about this theory is that one of the guys didn't grab his coat although it was late December. Oh and also in the logs there was nothing saying anything about that. If they were contemplating leaving the island together they would have at least wrote where they were going, maybe not exactly why, but that they were going 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞. But it still is a sweet theory. Sorry if I went to in-depth about this.
@@mortis.1618 it’s fine. i just made this comment as a joke. i don’t think that is a very plausible theory, since (like you said) there is no evidence in the logs about them contemplating leaving the island and that the one had forgotten his coat in december. i feel like maybe one had fallen in the water and got swept under a wave and when the other 2 tried to help him, they also got swept under
i’m obsessed with the implication that the lighthouse keepers have the same light obsession as moths
“ there were no signs of a major wave” yeah there was. The life ring was missing

i think this particular case comes under the case of people being mystified by the "Spookiness" of the environment that this story takes place, like with the Elisa Lam case. It's more than likely that these poor men had met with a terrible accident- someone fell into the sea, the others tried to save him, and resulted them all dying.
I listen/watch these as I am going to sleep. Whenever Shane talks I can't help but imagine The Professor now.
Same
I've been watching these episodes quite a lot recently and what's just dawned on me is that while Shane doesn't believe in ghosts, he does seem to believe in happy endings. It's actually sweet how often in these disappearance episodes he brings up them disappearing on purpose to go live happy lives.

For post mortem: The reason that British Lighthouses had teams of three keepers was because of an incident called the Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy where one of the two keepers died in an accident. The other keeper was terrified of being accused of murder, since the two of them had been known to feud, and so tied the body in a makeshift coffin outside the lighthouse to try and preserve it, but the coffin broke and released an arm in such a way that in the wind it seemed to beckon to the remaining keeper, who had lost his mind by the time he was finally relieved. Could something similar have happened here, where two of the three keepers were accidentally killed, and the remaining one lost his mind out of the fear of being blamed?

I feel like the more gruesome the scene the more scary, but the more untouched the more eerie.
Coincidentally there's a paralell with the Dyatlov mystery, namely that the keepers abandoned the lighthouse and ran down the slope to the sea, just as the Dyatlovs ran down to the forest. Perhaps in both case they were freaked by some kind of paranormal apparition and fled in panic?
It's pretty clear a wave took them out dude lmao
