TL;DW - the A40's blow the Game One's out of the water. Honestly no comparison in my book.

This video was great. The quality on this video was phenomenal. I was blown away I believe you deserve many many many more subscribers. Congratulations on being a Dad btw!
Great comparison. Thank you! I love my A40s but the Game One is a solid headset.
Excellent video>..........the one thing I like is the detail and enthusiasm you put into your video. Thank You
I think the Dolby 7.1 might be nice for music lovers or someone watching movies on their pc, but I agree that for someone who is playing a game to win, they need to know which direction the gunshots are coming from. Also, I had the old school A40s back in 2013-2015, I got the Orange/Black ones (kinda wish they’d come back with those colors), and they were by far the best gaming headset I’ve ever owned. I could hear footsteps I couldn’t before, which caused me to become an excellent player in Ghosts S&D
You solved my question. Thanks for the video!
Abey Geelani which one u buy
@@EVERYTHINGDEAD2223 The Astro a40s ;D. Had my prior headset for 9 years and it still works. Mic port is broken though. Can hear kids scoping in on counter strike half away across the map on these bad boys ;D
Abey Geelani thank you. I just got them for my 13th birthday glookin g
@@EVERYTHINGDEAD2223 All good young man. Enjoy them. They're the best gaming headphones I've ever invested in.
Abey Geelani thank you I’ll be using them for yt. And trust me I’m 13 but I look or sound nothing like a young man😂
Cognratz to the new Kid! still rockin my astros A40s 2011 MLG edition since 2011! definitely a viable reliable headset! edited: and btw astro A40s are tanks ;)
Great stuff dude I agree withe all the stuff what you say about the Astros!
you comparison is uneven, the Astro has an amp, the Sennheiser uses what you have on your PC, compare the two on the same sound card without the extra stuff of the Astro
Or....or!!! Plug your game one in the mixamp
That’s how I have it set up right now. The Game Ones allow a lot more sound in than the A40s did at the expense of better bass and overall sound experience. It’s not as groundbreaking as you would expect.
You can hook up senheiser to the Astro mix amp and it’s a beast when you do that trust me
Best review comparison I've seen. No tech details, it would've been better to know ohms and those details. Also you should try the sennheiser with an amp, they definitely improve the sound although you are on PC it might give you more juice out of those headsets. I own a pair or HD598 and I love the sound signature of Sennheiser but with a half cheap dac/amp it really is. Day and night specially because of the big drivers it has
Have you tried using the game ones with the Astro mixamp?
Did you use a Amp/Dac with game one? JW if that was the difference?
I've been trying to decide between the A40, Sennheiser PC38X, Sennheiser game one and zero and I genuinely can't decide. The factors that matter the most to me are audio clarity and particularly directional sound since I play Rainbow Six Siege competitively. Which one would you recommend if you audio quality and directional sound was the most important to you? Thanks in advance!
Get the PC 38X
Great video. Have you tried the Sennheisers through the mixamp? I ask because I have a pair of gen 1 A40s with a mic that is on its way out. Replacement is £25 which is a decent proportion of the cost of a new headset so I thought I'd explore my options - the Game Ones being one of them.
Have you tried this out? I'm considering getting the Game One with the MixAmp alone and all curious about your experience.
lol quick question. What do they sound like with out the mix amp. What one is better. And if you hooked the sennheiser up to a mix amp would they sound any better.
Great video, but out of interest, did you try the Game One into the Mixamp? I have the Game Ones and just wondering if it’s worth getting the amp separately.
Yeah I currently use that as my setup. PC38x with the Astro MixAmp. Really like it.
@@MercuryTV and can you like really feel the difference with the amp and without? im waiting for my PC38X ( got them for 150USD ) and will take your thoughts on my decision if buying an amp for these will be a worthy idea... thanks :)
Its not like we have 7.1 ears on our head. Anything you can hear with 2 ear holes you should theoretically be able to hear with 2 speakers. Its just a matter of getting the sound processing right.
I would usually hate you for disliking 7.1, but you clearly explained why you hate it. So I respect that! Also, I agree with the size of A40s. I don't need to have them adjusted on max, but it's almost max and I don't really have a big head so that is weird for me. They could easily make the metal thing longer to make the headset fit bigger heads. - For me, the best default EQ is Tournament.
it garbage and overrated
@@Christian-jf4jp ok
@@MacikSeba its true chief if you got the money recommended getting like dt990s or some 6xx with a desk mic
hey! i am rocking either sennheiser game ones or the gsp500 paired with astro mixamp. To me the sennheisers sound better than astro a40 and thats how i am using it.
Александър Стефанов can i use this set on my ps4 and will it affect the mute/unmute feature? - will it give me surround sound ?
Can I use astro a40 + Mix Amp and enable loudness equalization on windows?
Which one would you recommend for PS4 pro , game one or gps 600 ?
You ever try the Game One with the Mixamp?
It depends on your head-shape and your eardrum. Everyone hears different. It even can be that a cheap 30 dollars headphone sounds for someone better as a 300 dollars one. I tested both the game one and the A40. For me comfort comes first, and the A40 was much more comfortable on my head. The sound quality is very neutral and like that.
How do they compare against the game one without the mix amp?
whats that smaller 2nd monitor that you have at the back?
Nice Vid! Try running the game ones through the mixamp pro and then you will really have a different experience!
I did, and I didn’t like it nearly as much as I hoped I would. They just can’t hit the same rumbly lows like the Astros.
That’s fair! I am stuck trying to decide to keep the game ones or switch to the arctis pro + gamedac
@@MercuryTV The thing i hated about the Astro's is how hard it is to hear footsteps in games when people are shooting/driving at the same time. The Sennheiser has a much more balanced sound and not a bass that blows your head off or makes you unable to hear certain other sounds during gameplay with a lot of explosions or shooting. And it allows you to communicate with your team in discord/teamspeak no matter how crazy the explosions are ingame. So for competitive gaming where footsteps is all that matters, the Sennheisers are way better for me. However when watching action movies or while listening to music, i would agree that the Astro's are way better. For realism, the Astro's are also better. But you if you want to be able to hear everything going on at the same time around the same volume, then the Sennheisers do a better job for me. Astro's= immersive with a lot of bass and boosted lows. Sennheiser=Neutral/Balanced.
@@19Ninja88 I'm trying to make my decision to order game ones, solely for gaming, mostly for apex and bfv. how about directional sound? locating enemies etc? watched almost all the KZhead videos on this but no one seems to talk about the in game experience other than the mic's quality. pls help me
Erik Joyner can i use this set on my ps4 ? And will it affect my mute/unmute feature ? And will it be surround sound ?
Have you ever tested the Game One while connected to the Astro A40 Mix Amp? I have heard from several sources that the Game One really needs an amp to reach its true potential. Any headphone will sound better with an amp.
Yes, I am currently using it set up that way. The Game One has a better open back but in terms of audio the A40 is still surprisingly “better” sounding. However, I have a 7 month old that I need to be able to hear and the A40s just aren’t as open as the Game One’s.
@@MercuryTV Totally understand. I just bought a set of Game Ones for that exact reason. Got tired of my wife and 7 year old son having to yell at me to get my attention when I have my closed back headset on. I decided to get a Creative Soundblasterx G6 DAC/AMP to go with it which is why I was wondering if the Game One sounds better with an amp.
Dude I love the game one because of the openback and use it with the Astro mix amp but the game one picks up my breathing so easily lol I swear I’m not breathing heavy
Could just be mic placement. I leave mine by my chin not my mouth. Works pretty well.
Mercury_TV yeah the only time it doesn’t pick up the breathing is when it’s almost muted, again I swear I’m not heavy breathing lol and even have a windscreen idk?
Overhead fan right above you?
I know this is late but I ended up just getting the Astro headset/mix amp. I did everything even the mic pop filter nothing stopped it. I guess mine was just a defect.
I agree. Simulated surround is shit. Your right. But if you download the Dolby access app, then you will definitely get better imersion. I also feel like you should compare the Sennheiser gsp 600 vs the astro A40
What about using the sennheiser on the astro mixamp to compare also?
That's a great idea . I use scuff headset which are corsair virtuous xt. With the mix amp and they shit on my a50 sound
I know time has change since this review, but right now that Yeti with NVIDIA Broadcast theres no need for a headset.
The light padding on the top of the A40s hurt my head. How does it compare to the game ones?
Game ones are more comfortable over long periods. Extremely light weight, fits any size head with room to spare.
Great video but I feel like it is an unfair comparison between the two headsets. One there is a huge price difference, two the Astro's comes with a mix amp which I would assume makes a huge difference. Maybe test these both without using the mix amp. That would be the test that I am looking for. Still great video with great effort.
And there is a preset eq made specifically for the a40s. Can't really compare something that's eq'd to something that's not. Both good headphones though
Yeah i dont use Dolby its like u said,!!
A Qs i couldnt find the answer for i hope you help me, a40 alone vs a40 with mix amp is there any difference in sound quality?? I dont care about 7.1or sound mix. The a40 with mix amp costs alot more idk why.
There is definitely a difference in sound quality. However, if you don’t care for the chat/volume mixer, the Astro Mixamp probably isn’t worth the 100 bucks to you. Decent amps for pc gaming run anywhere from 75 to 200 dollars so that is the reason for the cost difference.
@@MercuryTV so the mix amp is actually an amp that makes sound a little better? maybe getting a decent amp/dac to run any headphone i have or stereo speakers is the best way to go? i already have a cloud alpha headset and its really fine i love them, but im really getting interested in sound quality stuff a little more, but really idk any thing about them i just want an amazing audio experience, and i need your advice.
For amazing audio (if you want a gaming headset still) I would actually recommend the Beyerdynamic MMX300. They are closed back (which isn’t my preference) but absolutely rock. You may need an amp or sound card depending on your motherboard audio.
Whats about using the game one with the mixamp.
Not as good as I hoped it would be. To be honest I thought the Game One almost sounded better WITHOUT the Mixamp. They have zero bass so with the mixamp I always preferred the A40’s.
@@MercuryTV have my 1's going via ifi micro usb
Rig 800 have chat mixer on the hesdset
Let's assume i decide to buy the gameone with an amp, which one would be better in sound ? :)
Well, my opinion on this changes. The A40s sound a little better with an amp, but I am back to using the Game Ones with the Astro MixAmp right now because they have a much better open back and allow me to hear my daughter better.
@@MercuryTV Thanks for the reply. Kind regards.
Compare the A40's vs sennheiser gsp600
or GSP 500
Great video but very bad comparison tray Sennheiser GSX 1000+Game One vs Astro A40+Mixamp
Not really bro,I have the GSX 1000 with the GSP 600's and the stereo mode is much better than the 7.1
try gsx 1000 with the 7.1. will blow your mind
Not really,I have it along with the GSP 600 and found myself loving the stereo mode better
kool Cycledad 7.1 works better with open backs. I’m using gsp 500 and the sound is unreal in modern warfare. Now destiny don’t really notice the 7.1 but still sounds great
Did you use the Game ones with an amp or no?
I did, with both the Astro Mixamp as well as the Sennheiser GSX 1000. It was definitely an improvement but I still preferred the sound of the A40 headset with both amps. I know people think that’s total bullshit, that there’s no way Astro could make a headset that sounds better than Sennheiser, and that’s okay. If you can try them both please do so you can see for yourself. Edit: “Hear” for yourself
@@MercuryTV Thank You for the quick reply! At the moment I am torn between the Sennheiser Game Ones and the Astro A40. I probably wasn't going to buy the mix amp. Also, are the Astro A40 closed or open back? I keep getting different answers.
They are open back with the option to purchase a closed back kit.
What about you get an amp for the sennheiser so the price would be comparable.. then lets see the quality.
Senheiser way better with the mix amp compared to the a40s
I’m gonna get the sound blaster g6 with the game zero or game one
@@shanepalmer9345 i have the omni 7.1 from creative and got the g3 as a more portable solution !! And i love it.. used it with thw gsp 600 and other headsets and its amazing for the price.. i will try it with the game (open back) and tell you how it works

I'm rocking astro mixamp with the senhiser game one, and GSP 600. Cant complain
how is it? I was thinking of doing this, and was wondering if mercury did that as well before comparing.
@@abemassri5929 to be honest , Its better than just hooking up the headset to the controller, now I upgraded to a Soundsblaster G6 , man does that really make a difference. But I think if you get the astro mix amp , is better than not having then plugged in to the controller.
Brand new headset with amp vs year old headset with no amp great comparison
More like 2 of the most popular open-back headsets for the PC regardless of age. It took a lot of headsets to finally dethrone the Game One’s as my daily driver. And yes, I plugged the One’s into the amp and the A40’s were still better.
@@MercuryTV good to know but next time can you please talk about them both with the same outside factors (please note I'm not mad I just felt the comparison was unfair since I didn't know you used an amp with both)
No you’re right man. It was a poor review in terms of laying everything out.
if you got the senheisers with the mixamp they will blow astros out of water only reason your astros sound so good is because of mixamp the senheiser amp is 80 times better
Have you tried both Sennheiser + GSX 1000 and Astro A40 + Mixamp then?
Did u use the astros without the mixer cause ive only heard thats what makes them better? They suck as is. i bet that mixer would improve sound to the sennheisers with the amp in it more power and eq!
But there's a $130 price difference so it's weird to compare them. If you cant afford the Astros the game one is still an excellent option. And like other comments have said, the Astros have an amp and the game ones don't. I use the gsp 500 with an amp and they sound better then the game ones
I know it’s weird to compare them on an apples to apples basis. The reason I compared them is no headset came close to beating the Game Onea for me for over a year until a brand that most people will just say is shit actually released something that was just better (with amp/ without amp.) I feel like everyone saying it’s an unfair comparison needs to realize I don’t care if it’s fair or not, the overall package is better. That’s like saying you can’t compare the Ford Raptor 3.5L turbocharged v6 to a Toyota Tundra 5.7L v8 because one has a turbo and one doesn’t.
@@MercuryTV I understand where you're coming from man and I've always liked astros. And I support you choosing them but for the majority of your viewers like you said the comparison is a bit odd price wise. I hope your channel continues to grow mate you've got a good thing going

Which Sennheiser headset do you have, and which model year of the Astros do you have? Just curious. Do you use the GSX 1000 with the Sennheisers? or nothing? Or maybe the mixamp?
I gotta say, I don't like overpowering bass for music. Maybe it's just the type of music I listen to (j-pop) I just don't feel like it works, I much prefer the more neutral tone.
@@Person01234 same, this is why sennheiser has always been my goto, they dont go overboard with the base and the kinda music i listen sounds noticeably better than other stuff ive used.
19Ninja88 wouldn’t the mixamp fix that by lowering the lows and highering the highs
So, best sound quality? Astro or Sennheiser?
Sennheiser PC38x. Ignore this video.
@@MercuryTV for ps4pro ? Is ok?
No. Both the Game One and PC38x need a decent amount to drive them. I would recommend those for PC use only. For the PS4 Pro I would go HyperX or Astro. Also, wouldn’t you want wireless for console?

ImpulseRoad nobody that likes quality audio sound would ever suggest them the mics are garbage and the mix amp is the only reason they would sound better without it they are like the 50$ ones just a different build and adjustments i think thats listed in the a10’s box so why not buy a10’s and buy the mixer separately? Lol

Lmao, I have both of these and the game ones are more comfortable and sound twice as good. The Astros sound like trash and the DAC is awful.
To each his own, but I think it's a bit dramatic to say the A40's sound like trash.
