I did in fact go on to become a historian, and I *still* think there was more to it than just a friendship. It wasn't unusual for men to speak in flowery terms about each other back then, but these two really were a bit, uh...*excessive.* I remember reading another historian pointing out that Hamilton's family (I think it was his kids later) burned some of his letters either to or from Laurens because even for the times, they veered too far into romantic territory.

    • @@SirDankleberry polygamous households...can be perfectly stable....if the parents are all in a stable relationship, too. Plenty of monogamous relationships are unstable and unsafe for the children, and the base issue is between the parents, whether it’s monogamous or poly. A poly relationship between parents is not inherently unhealthy for a child. A mono relationship between parents is not inherently unhealthy for a child, and often winds up unstable and unsafe anyway. So it’s not about poly or mono, it’s about parenting and actual dynamic.

      @greatvalue_ethelcain@greatvalue_ethelcain4 жыл бұрын
    • @@greatvalue_ethelcain well here's the thing, back then they didn't really make that distinction between gay and bi. sort of how people haven't made the distinction between sexual attraction and romantic attraction until rather recently. The more open society becomes the more people talk freely about their individual experiences and the more our understanding of the lgbt+ community changes. They did not have the vocabulary that we have today, and so most would not have quite the same sense of identity that we have. What that means is that back then, if you liked someone of your own gender, you were a homosexual. If you liked someone of your own gender *sometimes* you were also a homosexual. They didn't have really a broad understanding of trans people either, so they were also called homosexuals. Asexual people? Frigid, but when in doubt, also a homosexual, probably. And so, most understanding queer people had of themselves were kind of cobbled together out of a life of shame and opression, if they didn't have imediate access to the underground queer scene. Some gay people would push for straight relationships cause "that's what you're supposed to do", some people would get married and maybe truly love their spouse, but also maybe still have side affairs, and sometimes it would be like "Aunt Geraldine was a spinster and may or may not have lived with her very close roommate Olivia till one of them died" And then you'd have someone like, Idk, James Dean, who was very "dude ya wanna smooch this weekend" about everything.

  • I have 3 theories. 1.) I think during the honeymoon, Ronnie told Christina that he and Jack were in love. Perhaps he told her that Jack marrying Christina was just a coverup so that he and Jack could be together without anyone figuring out their gay affair. That would explain Christina being emotionally unstable. She finally decides to kill herself and Jack along with her because after all, he was the one who was lying about his love for her the whole time. Also, it would have been much harder for her to manage to kill BOTH Jack and Ronnie. So she decides to take out the one who hurt her the most. So, after Ronnie leaves the cabin for a while, she poisons Jack and herself, leaves Jack inside the cabin, sets the cabin on fire as a crime of passion, and then either A. intentionally drowns herself in the river, possibly with the motives of framing Ronnie as a way to punish him as well B. while walking by the river, she passes out due to the drugs and drowns 2.) Ronnie was in love with Jack but Jack didn't know. So, to get back at Jack for marrying Christina, he decided to kill them both. He drugged them both, hit Jack over the head so that he wouldn't interfere while trying to kill Christina, Christina runs out of the house in fear and heads towards the river, Ronnie catches up to her and drowns her, went back to the cabin, sets it on fire, realizes that either there's no reason to kill Jack now that Christina is out of the picture or he realizes the horror in what he's done/doing, decides to rescue Jack, and grabs the letters in order to frame Christina. 3.)supporting one of the theories mentioned in the video, perhaps Christina was so paranoid about losing Jack, she decided to kill him and herself so that no one else could have him and because she was nothing without him. And Ronnie, sensing something was off, went along with them on the honeymoon to make sure things didn't go south. But he also never said anything to Jack because he didn't want to ruin things between him and Christina

      @pepper7651@pepper765111 ай бұрын
  • I really think Christina may have had drug issues and paranoid tendencies, so when she either found out or assumed the relationship between Jack and Ronald she snapped. She took drugs, drugged Jack and tried to murder him by knocking him out and setting the house on fire. Ronald showed up just in time to save Jack and when Christina found her plans to be ruined she ran off. Not sure how she drowned in 9 inches of water, but I also don’t know how much codeine was in her system. Also I def believe she was so dramatic she threw the ring into the lake titanic style.

    @helloimkelzo@helloimkelzo3 жыл бұрын
    • I think you're right, this doesn't sound like a murder, just a very tragic, sordid love story. and 9 inches is enough water to submerge your face if you're lying down, so its enough to drown in. you can drown in incredibly shallow water, especially intoxicated

  • I’d like/hate to think that when this case was over, media was still all over Jack and Ronnie’s lives, seeing as they kept up with Jack’s marriage, and to save their gay relationship, they went separate ways so as to not sensationalize their connection to each other. Unfortunately, it led to them never seeing each other again. Kinda like “if you love something, set it free” and also like the trauma of what went down is pretty intense and put a strain on their relationship. Obviously I’d like to spin my own made up version of what happened after the case went cold, but i think this much sadder version is closer to reality ☹️

  • I think Shane's theory that whilst the two men did not directly cause her death, they knew what she was planning and took advantage of it. Ronald may have shared the letters with Jack and the two may have further encouraged this mental state in her and her worry over Jack's love. They knew she was planning something drastic so they took out the insurance policies, and ensured Ronald came with them in case anything went wrong and she tried a murder suicide. This theory would also explain why Ronald saved the letters from the burning cottage, so that they could prove her mental state and show their innocence. Christina left the cottage after attempting to murder Jack and then either drowned accidentally when she maybe passed out, or Ronald found her after saving Jack and the letters and kills her in revenge for almost killing Jack.

    @catherinewalford962@catherinewalford9624 жыл бұрын
    • I'd stem off and almost say in her declining state they took advantage after she wrote letters he showed them to Jack and they then setup an elaborate plan to murder her at the cabin and burn it down but to make it look like she tried murdering jack. Because in my eyes if I was Jack and he showed me those letters saying she wanted to murder me I wouldn't want to be left alone with her. I'd be too afraid she'd do something and coincidentally something does happen. So it makes me wonder if they murdered her and staged it too look like she tried killing Jack. Mmm not sure though not sure. Unsolved

    • Except when they found the body there was no evidence of foul play if she was drowned FORCIBLY there would be indications of this unless she was just drugged and thrown into the water.

      @DrDarkheart@DrDarkheart4 жыл бұрын
    • I'm buying all the thing you said EXCEPT the idea that they murderd her. She probably committed suicide, intentionally drugged herself while on the river, then passed out and drowned.. well intentionally, after her "failed" attempt to murder Jack.

      @gravelor78@gravelor783 жыл бұрын
    • This is exactly what I have been thinking. Who saves a bunch of letters when there’s a fire unless the person knows the letters are a chance for him (or them in this case) to escape? I’ll take it a bit further and say they were gay and had intentionally made Christina more paranoid about the whole “jack not marrying her” situation.

      @ummenabila2725@ummenabila27253 жыл бұрын
    • Or maybe the two buddies planned everything beforehand (marriage, honeymoon, etc.) so they take the insurance money by manipulating Christina, knowing she was mentally unstable.

  • As a Canadian I’ve never heard of this case so this was actually pretty interesting but I think that Jack and Ronald were gay and Christine either 1: knew about their relationship and was angry and sad that Jack would never love her as much as she loved him and tried to kill Jack and commit suicide by setting the house on fire but failed and either due to the drugs or intentionally. Theory number two would be that because she had tried to kill Jack Ronnie decided to kill her because he was angry and drowned her. Theory number three is that maybe that Jack and Ronnie has been “doing the deed” and Christina walked in on them and I was horrified and maybe she got angry and told Ronnie to leave so she could talk to Jack alone and tried to murder jack but failed and tried to set the house on fire and then left to commit suicide and threw the ring into the water and drowned. 🤔
