Is it some common knowledge that US troops went through Europe on a way to Vietnam and back home? Can you prove it to me somehow or should I take your word for granted? It just seems to me counterintuitive to choose such a route while Pacific ocean has less travel distance with a lot of US bases and without the need to cross other countries' sea and air borders. Beside that, by 1960 Korean War was long over, US intervention in Vietnam didn't escalated until Johnson took an initiative in 1963, and the man in the video was probably too young to serve as a military advisor in Vietnam at the time. And he also said "I bought it in Germany when I was in the army there", not "on my way back home". But, of course, none of that directly contradicts your statement, and I would be grateful if you'll kindly prove to me, a non-American, that US troops indeed traveled through Germany on their way home from their service in Far East.

The story, the uniqueness of the watch, the valuation, the fact he kept everything to do with the watch. but it is the owner, his blind belief when he bought it, for no other reason other than he was told it was a good purchase by his sergeant and then of course his reaction. His genuine disbelief at the value and his subtle body language that gives so much away. The valuer also deserves praise, it was well paced, knowledgeable and the delivery of the value was done very well. It is something the UK roadshow presenters do better than their US counterparts (for the most part). When values are high, it should be teased out a little. It makes for better viewing, but in this instance I liked it very much.

  • I always remember this video and think about this man when I come across someone who "doesn't know what they have". In collecting (no matter what the hobby) getting a "steal" can be rewarding but look at this man's face, his reaction, his tears. Imagine him falling on hard times before this and putting his watch on Craigslist or something for $1500. In those situations you have a moral obligation to be honest and upfront with someone. Your humanity and their humanity is worth much more.

  • $120 in 1960 after inflation is around $1,000.00 now. At auction there’s a potential of around $60-70k ... not to shabby.

    • If it was a months Army salary to buy at $120, then accounting for inflation, at $70,000 it works out about 10-15 times a months salary now. Edit Which confirms tyvek05 estimation of $7,500 is the right ballpark.

    • @@DiscoFang To add to that, wages have not been increasing as much as prices have gone up, so in the 10-15 range it is probably much closer to 10. Which again means $7500 is probably close.
