At Phillips auction house in New York on Thursday night, the legendary Paul Newman 1968 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona was auctioned off; auctioneer Aurel Bacs called it “possibly the most iconic wristwatch of the 20th century.” Here’s the bidding process for this piece from start to finish …
When he said 12 Million in 4 different languages that was pretty badass.
Probably only number he has learned... :-D
I'd hedge a bet that he's probably Swiss. Swiss people usually speak at the very least German, French and English; but usually Italian an as well.
he is Swiss. You can tell by the way he pronounced "zwölf Millionen"
i can say that in 5 languages. Albanian, Greek, Italian, English and German. Whats so badass about it? I dont see it.
Albanian language? Never heard about that language nor country. You mean Serbia dont you?
The ten million bid was a super power move to remove the peasants with paddles who were hoping to pay 2 to 6 million.
Peasants with 2-6 millions...wow
Natalie was paid by them to raise the price deliberately
🧐
Inside bid.
It’s a good thing you’re not arrogant.
The long pauses and waiting is probably the billionaires waiting for the next million to roll into the back account every 2 minutes lol
They already know what to bid. The delays are consortiums that need approval to go higher.
How could Rolex NOT buy this back- it’s the no.1, the icon, and if it went onto some oligarchs wrist or into an Arabs watch drawer, it’s value is nothing. It’s become a piece of art that connects you to a beautiful man who will forever be loved and admired for his loyalty, bravery, kindness and honesty.
I guess because the guys running Rolex are good businessmen a don't piss money away. Agree that Newman was a great man!.
It's the most iconic watch?? Many didn't cared about it until it was sold for 17.8 M Or you can say it got iconic after it was sold for 17.8 Million
I doubt they care lol
In another 100 years people won't know who Paul Newman was and the market value will be one / twentieth of it's current sale price . Personally I think Paul Newman was the coolest actor of my ( currently 60 years ) lifetime .
It is actually purchased by Rolex. They currently lent the watch to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures for display .
Rick from Pawn Stars offered $50 bucks but only after he first got his buddy down there to inspect it and tell him what it was worth
haha
and he is taking a HUUUUUGE risk then
“I’ll offer you $50, I have to frame it and put some money in to display it. Not everyday do I have someone coming in asking for Paul Newman’s Rolex, this can bankrupt my business”
Haha
Appraiser : its worth well more than 17m dollars Rick : ok so... howd you feel about 10 bucks ?
was: $14'500.000 now: $250 after Rick called his friend.

Legends say that, Tiffiney never had a Client she was there just to spice up the bid.
Pretty probable since they want to make the most money out of art , they plant "bubble" clients
Or she was working for the charity to make sure bid was at least 10 million

I never realised auctioneers could be that much fun. This guy was fantastic.
Paul Twiss The auctioneer is entertaining for sure. He called “going once, going twice” 2 times. That’s a bit disrespectful to the highest bidder IMO.
A lot of poise there.
He actually made the whole thing seem like quite a bit of fun, though I'm sure the high bidders were chewing their nails

Paul Newman was an amazing guy I’ve met him at Mid Ohio. He also was the best of the “celebrity” race car drivers and was a world class talent. Love this video!!!
What was he like to meet him in person?
O-H!
Steve McQueen wasnt to bad either around the race circuit .
@@onesri6108 He was an amazingly normal human being with a glint in his eye which you knew was either flirting or showing his amusement with being coveted and enthralled. I mentioned before that I had the chance to meet him on the track at Watkins Glen and I was in the hairpin turn when he went off the track and crashed into something- I can’t even remember what it was maybe another driver running him off or something but apparently I didn’t handle it well and it was the first AND last time I was on headsets at the Glen. He thought it was funny and he was so cool and since he was sponsored by Budweiser bought drinks and BBQ for everyone for that day and the next. My sister-in-law Amy Ruman used to be on the track with him and my brother, Dave Skinner, her engineer said the same thing about him-just a really normal nice guy…

In 1978, I was on the Road America racetrack in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, racing a car my Navy buddy and I built and prepared for the SCCA event (my buddy and I were stationed at Great Lakes and we both had an abundance of cash from our re-enlistment bonuses and built a race car) Several different car classes would be on the track at the same time, only competing with our own class. It was quite a memory being on the track at the same time with Paul Newman. We had to constantly be in our mirrors to ensure we gave his class of racers the right of way, or as we were told pre-start, don’t get in his way. Seeing him blaze past me, with flames belching from the Newman-Sharp Nissan 280ZX tailpipes on deceleration, is something I can replay in my head, in slow motion, over and over. So much more calm than the art auctions at Christie's and Sotheby's
The higher the numbers the more noisy it becomes.
tbf a “good" auctioneer keeps the pace (or they call it energy) quick so it’s thrilling, never boring even for non-bidders and stops bidders from thinking twice. This one gets too slow really if not for the auctioneer’s humour. Hypes the ego of the bidders really well.
What I love about these auctions is the crispness, the professional elegance. The seamless switching of languages to convey information, the beautiful women assisting, not a hair out of place. The bidders' passion. The excitement. The friendly rivalry and playfulness. The courteous and respectful demeanor. Class, style.
Meanwhile their associates are ordering air strikes so they wake up tomorrow in their penthouse suite with $100 billion extra in their Cayman Island shell accounts!

For those of you that don't understand - this watch is an investment, and is a very important piece in the history of timepieces. It represents Swiss watchmaking combined with racing history. This watch IS Rolex, like Neil Armstrong's speedmaster is Omega. You can't really comment on it if you don't understand this, let alone think it's "useless". Ignoring all the heratige and historical importance, it's actually really smart to buy this because guaranteed in another 20-30 years the buyer could sell this watch for twice the amount he bought it for here. The investment is more secure than buying gold, silver, bitcoin, any of that, and is more secure than investing in a company. It's like the Mona Lisa of watches - the best representation of a great artist.

I wander if Aurel kept and framed his tie to commemorate such an amazing auction. I am almost willing to bet that Rolex bought that watch back. There’s only one and they have it. The added bonus that from that day on all Rolexes have just gained in value.
Paul Newman & Steve McQueen.... absolute legends
From a watch lover, this vintage watch is a classic, one-off timepiece which will appreciate in value in the years to come. With such heritage and craftsmanship, 15mill is actually pretty reasonable considering the fact that paintings like the Mona Lisa go for above 100mill. You guys saying "it's just a watch" should really be more open-minded. A painting is just oil on canvas, a diamond is just a rock, and a house is just a concrete container. Grow up
Syafiq Norkhalim you idiot. It is a Rolex which means no handmade process involved. This watch was made by machines exactly like regular daytonas. If it were a one off patek the price would be justified.
Momin Idrees : I believe you could have been more civillised in bringing up your point, despite how inaccurate it is. Do some research and you will know that there are processes in the case and movement assembly of Rolex watches which are done by hand. Furthermore, this watch was made several decades ago, at a time where a lot more of the Rolex watch assembly was done by hand. Thanks for trying anyway
Syafiq Norkhalim No matter what you say it is still a copy paste daytona and it is from that era where daytonas were considered a unsuccessful product from rolex. Furthermore the real value of this watch is that paul newman wore it. Now who the hell is paul newman. I've never heard of this guy besides the affiliation with rolex. Is this really a value point of this watch. And ad to insult you are comparing this mass produced (someone just change the color scheme of the dial so it can be a unique piece) object to THE MONA LISA. Just ask around your neighbourhood and see how many people know about this watch compared to the MONA LISA.
Momin Idrees : for someone who loves acting smart, you sure do contradict yourself. Like many others who have stated in the comments section, this watch is mainly for watch lovers who can appreciate and value this watch much more than others. Sure, to peasants like you, this watch may be immensely similar to other "copies" which were made during that time. However, in the world of jewellery, fashion and artefacts, the mere provenance of an item is enough to make it outstandingly more valuable. Try researching how Paul Newman was affiliated with Rolex, and you would understand why this particular watch is valuable to Rolex's heritage, and thus Rolex lovers alike. Also, to address you poorly crafted argument based on Mona Lisa's uniqueness compared to this watch; sure, most people in many neighbourhoods would know about the legendary painting. How does popularity have anything to do with justifying value though? Damien Hirst's tiger shark piece for instance sold at £10million even though very few people in "neighbourhoods" know about it. And yes, I study art. Sure, Mona Lisa is well-known, but there's a reason why it's worth 100 MILLION, instead of just a few dozen. The fact is, it doesn't matter of what nature an item is. If it's valued by people, then those people will determine the price. It seems extremely pathetic how you are arguing against the value of an item which bares no significance to you.
Momin Idrees The lack of appreciation that you show for a significant object is honestly that of a 15 year old boy that hates on others for the kicks of it. This watch has a great historical importance. Mind I say that this is a watch that was searched for during the better part of three decades and it was indeed Paul Newman’s own which makes it important because of his role in motor sports.
I bid 11,000,000 $ and then ran out as fast as I could

Not for nothing but Armstrong's Omega Speedmaster is probably "the most iconic wristwatch of the 20th century". But IT never left the Lunar Module. Aldrin's Speedmaster was actually the "first wristwatch" worn ON the Moon". However, ITS whereabouts are officially "unknown" last I knew.

I love motorsports, love it. Fucking love it. But I'm never paying 15,500,000 USD for a watch.
It is incredible how a watch is given such kudos. That watch was worn by a legendary actor who’s pastime was driving cars. He wasn’t what you would call a great racing car driver and the watch didn’t drive the car. The watch was on the great actor’s wrist, yet such a fuss over a timepiece.
It's more about the specific dial in Rolex Daytonas which got nicknamed "Paul Newman"-dial because he used to wear it. Rolex called it "exotic dial Daytona". Those exotic dial Daytona's are the quintessential Rolex collectors item. When combining the desirability of Paul Newman dial Daytona to the actual unique Paul Newman dial Daytona wore by Paul Newman you get the results you can see here. Whole watch world for a longest time didn't knew if this watch even existed anymore so there was a big buzz for months before this auction.
This was very entertaining!
