The Man Who Sold The World’s Most Expensive Watch | MR PORTER
Meet Mr Aurel Bacs, the Philips auctioneer who in October 2017 sold a Rolex Daytona, formerly owned by Paul Newman, for over 17 million dollars.
In this film, Mr Bacs talks us through his enviable watch collection, from the IWC he received for his first communion to an 18k gold Zenith El Primero he bought on a whim during a birthday party. He also reflects on the Rolex Daytona sale - one of the most exciting watch moments in recent memory.

No one: Swiss people: "I got an IWC for my first communion".
lol!
Also Swiss people: Laughs inside Bentley reading this comment
i got an el primero. 🤣
for my first communion we went home lol
He maybe needs to give some watches to BLM before they come and get em. Livin a life of white privilege n all !
I asked my dad for money for a patek too, he said no and gave me the finger.
Di Saar ...possibly one of the greatest lessons a Father can teach a Son...feel blessed.
Di Saar he fingered you? That’s abit weird
I was drinking water whilst reading your comment and you made me spit everything into the monitor haha
What a Dad!! Hahahaha

Ahhhh the good life,my dad bought me a pint on my 18th birthday then told me 30 minutes later it was my round.
Yes it is very important too have good parents too be able too become successful .. my old man borrowed 30k my entire savings and never gave it back .. and the rest ... home renovation's gone ..vehicle's gone .. 7k necklace gone lol such is life for some.. there's always someone out there who has it worse

I’m not a big watch guy but I can appreciate the story behind his watches. “This last watch I have here is a Casio I purchased at Sears. It was normally 29.99 but on that particular day the sale price was 18.99. I knew I had to have it.”
Best comment here because it is so true. After 14 years I'm still wearing my 55 dollar watch and I make decent money. It's all about priorities. I invested my monies in a new house and new truck. I'm happy.
😂

Who can forget their own parent’s vault. So relatable.
@Joshua Nicholas a vault is a room, usually fortified. Which may contain a safe.
Ordinary childhood. Winters in Klosters... Summers in Rangoon..
hehehe man even if i were to pay my parents back over a few years for a patek, aint no way theyre spending like 15k on a watch to teach me a lesson lmao.
Yeah, my parents couldn't have afforded to buy me a patek Phillipe, even if I could have paid them back. This guy was born into money.
@Joshua Nicholas I'm sure they kep their luxury watches in a 75 dollar safe.
My parents taught me two things. My father how to take multiple punches to the head. My mother to deny that it ever happened
Awe Martin I hope that’s not true. If it is I’m so sorry for you. Take care.
@@kaseyj8284 . What possible benefit would lying get me. I know plenty of people like to lie for whatever reason but I've no need to
@martin wilk sorry I didn’t believe you would lie, it was more some people might say that due to the video. As I mentioned If it is true (which I wished it wasn’t) I feel very sorry for you. I couldn’t understand that situation as mine was very different, but I’d personally like to say sorry to you for that happening in your life.
@@kaseyj8284 . No worries, in a way I'm lucky because it could have been worse. Plenty of people have upbringings worse than mine unfortunately
@@MartintheTinman I hope you're living a better life now man. No one deserves to go through that, least of all a child.
the way he speaks...HE JUST SOUNDS RICH!
Totally agree.
@Ru22eLL that's harsh
With CLASS as well!
He certainly understands value. When design meets function and style with great aesthetic balance and precision it can become timeless...but only time tells, that's why vintage pieces stand up, they continue to inspire over time..or not. Old money families will have more exposure to vintage pieces and it follows that they are wealthy, but riches are found in the appreciation and beauty of the culture involved in creating and then refining the piece. When you're truly inspired by falling in love, by truly appreciating what you want, that's when the motivation sets in. It's knowing what you want and recognising the sacrifices to go for it, it can consume one in the guilty wrestle inherent to burning time and energy on a selfish pursuit, but if the greater good is leaning towards beauty, then perhaps aspiration starts to trump inspiration.
the average Swiss person doesn't speak this way (even if they're rich) - I'm sure it's a learned accent that he had to take up as part of this trade/profession
This is why I always go back to „old” videos of Mr Porter - just the story of a person, with no sublime commercial. Love it!
Step 1: Have lots of monies Step 2: Buy watches Step 3: Repeat
Not really, a lot of watch collectors started with beginner level watches. You can still find great watches at decent price. Such as Seiko, Hamilton, etc. It sometimes isn’t about the price but the value n history behind it.
Wilhelm is referencing 1:39 when the subject of the video asked his parents for a loan to buy his first Patek Philippe (Ref 2508)
Haha
another way... 1: Buy 2: Flip 3: Re-invest profits 4: Repeat
In Switzerland, they study horology. The history of watchmaking at a high level is the benchmark that is Geneva. This isn't about money, its what the country is known for.
This is a beautiful video

I love when a classy and refined gentleman such as this tells a good "It was early in the morning and I was drunk" story.
yeah but funny how he got drunk and bought a watch, woke up "omg, what have I done? "

I wish I was gifted a iwc for my first communion

unknown yeah watches are nice to wear and functional too. Really well your parents are right because when you buy something for yourself it makes you appreciate it it more than when it’s given.
I was gifter a scientific calculator, at least it worked as planned I assume.
Dominic Marsan any gift is better than no gift 😉👍
For my first communion I got a pair of red converse all stars and I loved them hahaha
What a beautifully photographed and presented film - this chap is as refined as his watches and yet there was not even a hint of snobbery about him; a great example of the wearer bringing status to the watch, not the other way round. And his comments about vintage items telling a story and reflecting a lost time when perfection stood out and had value and individuality... so true!
The moral of the video is that the most expensive watch is the one you value the most! Whether its a $5 or $50000 watch.
But alot of people don't appreciateor understand the engineering behind watches. Many buy into the brain name.
Or $17000000
The moral of the story is to stop being a pussy and be rich
I thought it would be about the biggest sucker mayweather buying the most expensive whatch
true. I have Rolex, omega. Turn out the perfect watch for me is a Casio G-shock
My husband is a watchmaker. I’ve loved watches since I was a child. Certainly not in the same class that this gentleman has but the old, mechanical watches are treasures. Loved this video and his passion for watches.

When you were 16 your parents gave you a loan to buy a Patek Phillipe How rich were they ????

Why is that your concern?
You never own a Patek Philippe, you merely look after it until the next generation.
Tell that to the Migos and Lil Pump
@Jal Ico u mean trash?
My first watch was a Timex. Burgundy pleather band, golden case. I was so proud to wear it to school in the 4th grade. I’ll never forget it.
"My parents taught me to look after things. My Parents taught me the value of things." This is what life is all about.
Even drunk you can buy a watch, you just need to buy it from a reputable dealer. I will get that in mind next time. This video is all about class. Big thumbs up!
thumbs down for your grammar
sous chef I'm Portuguese and I wish you could write and speak as I do 5 different languages. You also should see more videos from this channel. Maybe you also learn how to be polite.
scotie690 the fuck i care if you’re portuguese? im 28yrs and already have 3 restaurants but who cares right? no one asked how many languages you speak. im just stating your grammar sucks. and knowing you speak 5 languages it clarifies you cant use them properly so fuck you and your 5 languages
Dude. You're coming across as a complete troll. Commenting on a someones grammar, especially when that person is stating good things about the video is just poor form. Also, if this guy can speak 5 languages moderately well then his grasp on languages in general is more wholistic than yours or mine, therefore he wins. No argument needed on his part.

Great video, well shot. Loved the stories Mr. Bacs shared. He connected his favorite timepieces to beloved persons and fondest moments - something that is a high privilege.
I binged on a few GQ interviews with rappers showing off bling. Then I came to this and I felt cleansed. In an instant I readjusted taste and remembered refinement.
You’re insufferable. Such a pretentious comment, lmfao.

At 5:20. So true! Amazing video.
Hi, just a friendly reminder that on the typo you guys made: the Patek 5711 is not made in 1976. It is a modern watch, but the reference 3700 is from the 1970s.
so was his a 5711 or a 3700?
It is a 5711. Therefore, as mentioned above, it is a modern watch, not one from 1976.

Helps when you have rich parents like he obviously does
He paid for the watches though
Fair enough, but If I asked my father to loan me his 5-10 year worth of wages Im pretty sure I know what the answer would be. You can only loan what you can realistically pay back, which in itself is a kind of being rich.
@@Qlicky Maybe its not so much that the father or the son is rich specificaly, but that Switzerland is such a wealthy country, with so many oportunities and high wages for their people, that a 30 000 dollar loan is easily payable with any medium level job.
Look at it any way you like, I will just tell you this: my 4 room (1000 sq.ft) apartment was just under $30K. So its all relative really, 30K is a nice wrist watch to someone and a decent home for someone else, so naturally, anyone who can splash that much on a wrist watch is rich in my eyes. 5-6 years worth of average wage where I come from, and even that average wage is hard to come by.

Love every second of this man taking about watches. I don't know why. Me and him are very similar, and but yet worlds apart.
Well when you are well above Rolex level I do not think you realy relate to the value of things. Maybee you relate to excess in expensive stuff but not so much to value for money.
Watches above Rolex level aren't boought for the value, but for the work of art, the emotion and the craftmenship.
