    • Because Rolex is a watch brand everyone knows about, and Cartier is a brand well-known among women because they focus a lot on products for women. AP and Patek used to be something only watch and horology enthusiasts knew about, but today, thanks to rappers and other celebrities, the average joe knows about AP and Patek too.

  • My dad, may he rest in peace, always loved watches just like her dad. He collected them and had about 30 to 40 watches in his life time. All he wanted for Christmas was watches and shirts. He was robbed and he was so depressed. My brothers, sister and I pitched in and bought him watches and I bought a safe. Dad passed away at 98 years old. Love you Papa.

    • It really depends on the date of manufacture. One needs to remember, there was no such thing as a 'Luxury' watch before Seiko released the Astron in 1969, the worlds first Quartz movement watch. Before then, there were some watches which had some pedigree which made them stand out above others, sure.... Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe for example, considered 'quality' watches even before the 'Quartz Crisis'.... Blancpain for that matter too, though they had already lost much of their panache to a degree by the 1960s. However, Rolex were just a nice Swiss watch any middle class man, even a hard saving blue collar one, might own. Perhaps a little more special than say an Ingersoll or Boluva, but they and Omega and such, were essentially more just 'glamorous' European Hamiltons or Walthams. A great may Swiss makers were no more special than that. Of course, Rolex already had a huge profile, and massive brand recognition, but proportionally, compared to today, inflation accounted, their watches were MUCH more attainable and had not yet become the synonym for Luxury Watch they have today. Thus, this CAN in fact effect the value of a watch..... today.... the second hand Rolex market, for their more iconic watches, like the Daytona or the Submariner, can be INSANE. Yet only for Rolexes made in the last 30 years, generally speaking, and only for the right models. What DID make a watch 'Special' before the 'Luxury Watch' era, however, was history, and origin. For example, that Cartier. The Santos was the world's first mass produced, publicly marketed, MENS wrist watch.... up until the end of WWII the pocket watch was a mans watch of choice (some say WWI, but this is not true, WWI and the 'Trench Watch' increased the popularity of wrist watches with men, but pocket watches were still insanely popular right through the 20s and 30s).....but Louis Cartier was a smart man. That watch bares it's name... Santos... for Alberto Santos Dumont, the famous pioneering Brazilian aviator. Dumont lived, and made most his early contributions to aviation, like the worlds first purpose built aero engine, in FRANCE, not his homeland. Specifically in Paris. Whilst there, he became close friends with Louis Cartier. In 1904 he asked Cartier to make him a wrist watch, as he needed a good watch for flying, but he could not fly his airship safely if he had to take a hand off the controls regularly to check a pocket watch, it required both hands to fly the thing. Cartier made him THAT watch. In fact, many consider it to be the worlds first pilots watch, and indeed, tool watch. Cartier made it tough, engineered it beyond requirements......because Dumont had already had two lucky escapes from air crashes in the time he knew him. It was a great watch, Dumont approved of it. Cartier realised he should sell it, so in 1905... iirc, it went on sale. A nice vintage Santos, then, of late 60s or later, even today, would not be worth THAT much more than the evaluation..... probably not even close, say to doubled, in the last 8 yrs. HOWEVER, the OLDER that Santos is, the MORE it is worth. Because it IS a watch with such a great origin story, made by one of the great jewelry houses of the world, it is potentially worth more than any Rolex, Audemars or Blancpain of that pre-Crisis era, even if only dating back to the early 60s. Additionally, that Audemars Piguet with 9-D movement, is also likely to be worth something pretty ridiculous now, maybe.... because that dial reads Gubelin. You see, THAT was also something which made watches 'Special' back before the 'Crisis' and the birth of 'Luxury Watches'.....the provenance. What told you THAT was the case back, or dial, often both. Gubelin is a name which says excess, wealth, lavish luxury, and a watch face that reads Audemars Piguet... one of the 'Holy Trinity' of horology (along with Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin}, well that can be enough to mean that even if it predates the 'Luxury Watch' era, that watch is going to be potentially worth well over double what was said, now, today. The only way it could be worth more is if it had say 'Tiffany & Co' on the dial in place of Gubelin. In fact, this could apply to that Cartier too. IF that Santos was bought in Paris, from the main Cartier store THERE, it would not just say Cartier on the dial, but on the case back, or case back AND dial, it would say 'Paris' as well.... and THAT would add to the value CONSIDERABLY. Taking all that in to consideration.... the Rolly being probably some mid 80s piece, is likely to maybe be worth say, 3 or 4 k more now. Thee Santos, perhaps a little less...unless it is older than the Crisis era, towards the furthest backdate of the collection, and especially if it has good provenance too (though it was probably bought in the US alas). The first three watches are probably worth double what they say here, now.... but if they are from the latest date, close to the 90s say, in the era when such watches were now rather elite, exclusive pieces, hand crafter masterworks in horology in the era of Quartz, then something like that Ellipse could be worth half as much as that again. The Gubelin AP however, with that ultra thin movement, because of the movement, and because of the Gubelin name on the dial, in conjunction with it being an Audemars Piguet, could easily see that thing worth three or four times what this fellow claimed back when this was shot. Same with Blancpain... it is a Blaincpain... they are possibly more exclusive, and more ostentatious.... more 'Luxury' than even Audemars or Patek.... and it has additional complications too.... a day/date/month AND moon phase, along with being a Blancpain.... this watch too, is likely worth triple, or more what is quoted here, now. Ironically though, the second hand watch market is kind of crazy, and the right type of mid 90s or later Rolex Daytona, for example, could be worth WAY more than any of these watches, even though it is WAY newer. Likewise... an AP Royal Oak, just about ANY, though especially some of the more flashy ones made in small numbers in the last 20 years, is going to be potentially worth double what that Daytona is.... the right one anyway, even if IT is even younger. In many ways, this period, between the mid 60s, and mid 80s, is kind of the worst era for watches to be from, to hold their value. They're not old enough to be a huge deal, say like a pre 1910 Santos, or pre WWI Rolex wrist watch of any kind..... but they are not from the 'Luxury' era, either, when these companies took their watch making to a whole new level, to be able to justify the prices they needed to charge, to stay in business, now they had to make them so much more special to stand out from cheap Quartz watches. Of course, the pricing in the 'Grey market' of watch trading is fluctuating all the time, and something could happen tomorrow which makes all these watches worth ten times what they chap in this video says they are... or conversely, some other thing could, which renders them virtually worthless.

  • This video was posted here on YT 9 years ago...not sure when this particular show was originally aired - but I'm pretty sure that here in 2023 the collective value of those watches would be somewhere close to $100k. Today I stopped in at a retail store that specializes and trades in the finest vintage timepieces. There was a ladies Rolex President that was more than $11k itself. There was one watch in the display case (I forget the brand name) that was more than $30k. Last summer I sold them my Rolex datejust for $5,500 (which is more than I paid for it. I know people are paying these prices because whenever I stop in that store the watches that were there before are usually gone (sold) and there are 5 or 6 collectable watches I have not seen before.

  • They should really look for the boxes and papers for these watches. If her dad was a real collector there's a good chance he kept those, Which could add incredible value. Also, may find additional and original bracelets to the one with an after market band.
