While working his very first ROADSHOW in 2004, Watches appraiser Paul Hartquist met Robert, the owner of a one-of-a-kind 1914 Patek Philippe watch. Hartquist shocked our staff - and Robert - when he gave the watch an auction estimate of $250,000. Flash forward to Hartquist’s second-ever ROADSHOW event in Fargo, North Dakota, last May, where he updates ROADSHOW on where the watch is today, and how he felt while getting to see and hold this stunning timepiece back in St. Paul.
When he flipped it over and I saw the Day, Date and Moonphase complications I was like oh dear god here we go.
Same here. I've been in the luxury watch industry for a while now and my first thought was 3/4 of a million. Man was I wrong, lol
How rare is a minute register, on a split-chronograph?
@@davidbennett8627 Any of the big or medium size manufactures can make them now. But back in 1910 or whatever it was, it was very rare.
literally jaw dropped
Me too, I said 2 mil easy. I was shocked he appraised it at 250k
How can someone build a watch with so much going on? The calendar that adjusts with leap year astounded me.
Have a look at the movement for Patek's recent Grandmaster Chime wristwatch. The only thing more remarkable about the pocketwatch is that it was designed without the aid of computers! Just hundreds of years of skill passed down from master to apprentice.
James Touchette true... it’s truly an art form.. wish one day I’ll own a watch that’s 5% as stunning as that watch...
@@rasm6018 a large part of my collection is vintage ladies watches. A 70 or 80 year old ladies watch from a high end Swiss manuf. May still only be a 500-1000 dollars. They aren't in fashion so the market for them is weak, yet the tiny movements are actually MORE enjoyable to inspect because everything is so much smaller. I found a 60's ladies Blancpain at a pawn shop for 70 bucks, the movement was smaller than a dime (a Peseux 60, I believe) but the dial had no name on it and the shop owner didnt think the movement itself for a name. The little lady is just a joy to behold! Now, if you want a watch you can WEAR, I have much less helpful insight lol
Seiko going on 35 years with out servis
The guy looks like da guy from parks and rec
Guy thought he had an excellent watch; Appraiser thought the man had a legendary timepiece; Turns out...it was MYTHIC!
This watch is called the George Thompson Grande Complication, and according to Patek Philippe, it is the third most important double dialled watch they have ever made. Number one is the 1932 Henry Graves Super Complication which sold at Sotheby's in 2014 for $24,000,000 US. Number two is The James Ward Packard Sky-chart Grande Complication, which is in the Patek Philippe museum. Not sure what that one is worth.
Thanks for that
Sounds like Patek got a deal on this one...
Thanks, it does look like the buyer paid on the low side for this watch.
Wwwwwwow.
@@kking5652 He definitely should have held on to it longer. He got greedy and wanted the money right away
It seems like the guy honestly didn’t know what he had there. He knew it was pretty good but maybe he thought $10,000. But this is a museum piece, a legendary watch with huge value. Great find. Solid gentleman incredible watch.
777jones hard to imagine a Patek Philippe owner would be so ignorant to think his watch was worth $10 k. I mean it is enough to take a look at modern watches from this manufacturer. You would have to live in a cave ...
He must have been a moron.
Olasek You do realise this was way back before smartphones, social media platforms etc? Google was barely a thing too. He had the watch and didn’t do research on it. That’s it.
I'm just glad he went to a proper guy for a first appraisal and not the shady b*sterds which usually get a first view on watches "like" this.
This is definitely why people need to research their appraisers. If this had been someone ignorant or shady, this guy could have walked away with 20,000 dollars and had no clue what he gave up. Through this show his life changed.
Saw this video in July 2021 before my trip to Geneva. On the 3rd day I went to the museum and after searching for it for an hour I found it.
1:13 Answering no and laughing at the same time is usually the response I get when I ask a girl out..
Show her your Patek Phillipe.
I know the feeling Hampus!
You might be asking the wrong girls!😁
OMG this is so funny
Seems like you are a 250k catch to the girls and they can't believe it. Congrats, but actually you are worth 3million.
I'll never get tired of watching this video clip. This is the Planes, Trains and Automobiles of KZhead
The appraiser is so cute. He said the word “incredible” at least 8 times because he was so stunned he couldn’t find any other words to use! I got excited because he was so flummoxed. I figured by his reaction this watch must be a BIG deal, and it was! How much fun! Thanks for this video, it made me smile!
Yeah that was legit nervous energy and excitement for being the guy who could tell the owner what he had. These kind of finds are so rare on here, but it's _incredible_ that there are things out there worth that much that no one knows about.
I want to see his reaction to when he found out it was one of a kind too. I bet he fell out of his chair. Some regular guy brings in one of the rarest and most expensive watches/pocket-watches you’ve ever seen, and he was wanting only 50k 😂😂
I visited the Patek Philippe museum in Geneva last year. They have literally hundreds of mind-blowing watches on display. This watch would fit right in.
Did you see it??? It was there....since 2014!!!
... the watch has been on display there since 2014.
This watch is amazing in 2021, can you imagine owning something like it back in 1914?
Can you imagine what it would cost nowadays? Price have skyrocketed since 2006 😅
It would be like having an iPhone today, but you're the only one that has one.
What’s even crazier is how well of condition it’s in. Looks like the grandpa knew what he had and didn’t wear it too often. Man some people are so lucky to get passed down insanely valuable family heirlooms that have been well kept for decades. Just wish the guys grandpa coulda seen how much he helped his family out with just that one watch.
That watch was ahead of its time. It has all the bells and whistles todays watches have.
There are so many magical moments on Antiques Roadshow. Wonderful, wonderful moments in time.
I suspect Patek Phillipe bought the watch themselves to put it in their museum.
Isn't it obvious
@@indiopeninsulares6723 maybe 👀 🤔
100% they would rather it not be in circulation. And now you couldn't buy it back from them ever. It's truly a one of a kind.
That would be the only acceptable sale. Its a family heirloom
@@curedtheaddict1461 for sure..it ended up in their prized collection..it's like finding your first underwear.old and stinky but have sentimental value.lol
They guy who said it was 6000 was absolutely a scammer. Patek is just about the most famous watch brand. What a beauty
his name is rick
@@user-qp8jk5dj2e 😂😂😂😂
You know Patek bought this because they know, as I do, this piece is priceless.
They did. The watch will never again come on the market.
I'm not rushing to my drawers. My ancestors were all peasants :(
Me too :))
🤣
Same :(
Hahahaha we related? Hahaha
Same here, but we have happened upon some pretty alright stuff from the military and various other occupations
I am so happy for that guy. He was prolly a hard working average Joe and that watch made his whole life a lot easier (hopefully).
Or maybe he ran the numbers the South Side for the mob, who knows. ...
@@zivkovicable oh yeah. No telling. There is always the possibility the negative side of things. I am just hoping it really helped him out if he was in need.
People commenting saying it was a low estimate! The estimate was done in 2004, the price of Patek's have skyrocketed in recent years! Not to mention he gave an estimation assuming there were multiple copies, not a one off.
It was sold in 2006 for over 1.5 mil dollars
these updates are fantastic, I got goosebumps hearing 1.5 million!! thank you for posting!
I think patec bought it or at least bought it back, this is histroy for them and good to hear its on display in their museum 😊
when he whispers, "quarter million?" at 1:14, that's worth more than the watch. And how many times the appraiser says, “that’s one incredible watch”. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Lmao no it isn't.
@@Magnusbergg no it isnt what?
Seeing these old shows, before internet, so no one knows the value, is the best! Today, everyone has an archive of knowledge in their pockets..
What most impressive besides the fact that it’s almost perfect still is when it was built and how advanced it truly is. Amazing !
The Roadshow appraiser kind of casually dropped the quarter million figure on him. Lol. The owner's reaction was awesome. Very happy to learn that nice fella got well over a million for it!
Go watch the full unedited version of this from 2004. Appraiser: "how much did he offer you for it"? Owner: "about $6,000" Appraiser: "he was a little low"
AOB well at the time of the appraisal there were no sales to compare it to. Also appraisals never mean that’s exactly what it’s worth so it was actually a good estimate given the limited information given and lack of sales to compare it to.
Considering it was a PP, the owner probably expected 10-15k but a quarter million must have floored him
I love when experts who've seen everything come across something so rare they're just blown away slack jawwed flabbergasted beyond belief
A true 1 of 1 pocket watch confirmed by Patek Philippe. Just wow
I bought it and I carry it my pants pocket with my car keys where ever I go. I always know my time that way. Very handy watch.
Haha
Classy speech and presentation by the presenter. Solid guy.
Holy cow! is all I can think of!
Wow great story! And I love that they let us know what happened after.
Rick...I’ll offer you 1500 cuz it’s in good shape, but I’m really taking a chance on it. 😂
1550 is the highest i will go, and that is pushing it
And they'll say that no one buys pocket watches anymore
Let me call my buddy who knows more about these kind of things - but im sure 1500 would pushing it..........................ok will you take 8k
Owner: "I really can't leave with less than 2000" Rick: "How about 1550"
I've got to make a profit!
An absolutely legendary find.
Me: what idiot would buy a watch for $1M? Expert: we now believe the watch is worth $2-3M. Me: That's a fantastic investment.
Nope he sold.
Pffftt only double the investment.
That "idiot" was probably Patek Philippe. They bought up rare watches and took them off the market by putting them into their museum. That drove the value of remaining rare watches up, which brings up the price on all their used watches, which increases what they can charge for their new watches, and therefore they profit.
Gonna be worth $10 mil in a few years.
Lmao right
life changing moments are glorious to watch
Kind of sad that he sold it but I am glad its at least in a museum. It's such a great pocket watch.
I consider myself a watch collector, but if I had this watch and could get $1.5 million for it (or even more today), I would 100% sell the watch. It's an absolutely beautiful watch and a marvel of watchmaking, but I prefer being able to show my watches off by wearing them. Plus by selling, I could finally afford to get a Patek Phillipe Nautilus lol
Wow, a truly beautiful and incredible timepiece. What a find!
My grandfather was a watch dealer. I can see why. Beautiful craftsmanship and quality like never before. I’m lucky enough to have a vintage Longies moon phase
Patek Philippe makes some of the best time pieces In the world! Such an amazing watch
They are the best timepieces today that an ordinary person can strive to own someday in life. (not this valuable antique, but a new Patek Philippe today).
I was going to say, he has massively undervalued that watch
I Appraise Paul Hartquist’s Voice as “Incredible”.
Thanks for sharing this update. I remember watching the original broadcast and is one of my favorites. To time ...
My great grandfather or grandfather left me jack. Thank you my beloved ancestors. I still love you although I've never met either of you 😊
Antiques Roadshow thank you for the update on this.
the moment he flipped the watch my heart came in my mouth
You're strange
Need a doctor bro
My lord above ! It's very pretty, but those numbers are amazing. You could see Paul's face , he was very excited.
I just love history of this small thing!
Amazing skill and craftsmanship.
Incredible!!!
Wow! Stunning timepiece!
happy days for the owner delighted for him
Wow, amazing! One of a kind piece
Headed over to my Goodwill to see if they have one.
Fantastic - so pleased for that owner 👍
Piece unique, ancient, intact, highly complicated, way beyond its time… when it came to the evaluation I thought yeah, double that and you’re still not even close.
Are we all agreed it’s an incredible watch?
Love the way he pronounces Sotheby's
😱 Oh god, i think i have one of these watches !!! Split chronograph Day Date Month Moon phase Perpetual calender When i flip it over, it says Gshock 😱
I have a similar watch given to me by my old man. I should get it appraised.
Love the man who owned it...so genuine...
Beautiful!!!
Thank You for your support !!!
NO where Near this story but an older friend of mine died this year. He was Truly special. Out of the blue his wife said that Joe wanted me to have his watch. Ends up a 1963 Rolex GMT Master. "Pepsi Watch". Appraised at $16K. Needless to say I am shocked and Honored!
Congratulations, thats a great story
Amazing.
Did you see the guy's eyes? that look of astonishment is great. He won't be convinced? Nice story.
I’m a Swiss guy living in MN so this is super cool to me!
Incredible story and watch and the owner seemed a nice guy
amazing watch and story
What an amazing watch!
A beauty of a watch! Maybe Patek bought it themselves! It's litteraly a unique piece of their companies history.
The pronunciations in this video are just wild. PA-teck and SOTH-a-Bees... amazing.
It's a beauty.
Amazing!!
Pure disbelief, love it!
Wow it’s extraordinarily beautiful
Beautiful! 😍
Wow! I am glad that watch is home where it belongs for everyone to see!
That is one incredible watch ⌚ 👌
Patek & Czapek , two of great Polish watch makers , used to work together . By the way , love Czapek ‘s current watch models a LOT- such a beauty .
Take this watch to the Pawn Stars in Las Vegas, and Rick will give ya $50 bucks for it, and tell ya he’s taking a big risk here.
Gold value of the case will be much more than that
Best I could do is $20 and a tic tac
Rick: “i have to frame it, put it on display.. $50 cash and i’m taking all the risk here..”
Yea...same joke on all these type of videos. It got boring years ago.
He will need to call his buddy to come take a look first..
Incredible
The appraiser’s “market value” may have increased ten-fold after this case, just for discovering this watch. Great for him!
When someone looks up *"Giddy with Excitement"* they should link this clip.
To everyone saying the appraisal is low, the appraisers on Antiques Roadshow tend to be VERY conservative. Probably because they are on TV, they are doing a very public appraisal on something very valuable, and their professional reputation is on the line. Better to set low expectations. The important thing is that the appraiser recognized that this was no ordinary watch, gave him enough detailed information on it and a value that was high enough that he was motivated to sell through a reputable auction house that could properly publicize the sale. Once the right buyers find it, the original estimate doesn't mean much if it's a really special piece, the sky's the limit!
Crazy find
You cant help but feel happy for the guy who took it be evaluated
Beautiful
I was even stunned looking at this video I can't imaging if I would see it in person
Insane amount of money for a watch, but it sure is a beautiful piece of engineering.
Keeps on ticking.⭐️⭐️⭐️🔥
Wow! Firmly established it is indeed the one-&-only!!!!!!
I’m very happy for the family, and I’m really glad that he did not find it in a garage sale.
This made me laugh
Lucky bastard.. inherited a Patek Philippe...
That is one incredible whhhhhhhatch
Wowie Gazowie!!
So amazing Ron Swanson owns such a watch
The appraiser look much handsome after 20 years.
That's crazy! Could u imagine?
Takes leap year into account. Holy crap.
I know nothing about watches and don't care at all but this one even I found cool.
i have come across one of the first Patek watches made in 1840s. before Philipe I am waiting on covid to end . I contacted Patek phillipe in New York, they have sent me paperwork to send it to them and they will send it to switzerland for authentication. hoping for the best
