There's a new Tesla on the horizon... And it might be the biggest game-changer the EV market has ever seen!
We're expecting it to be a hatchback, but how can we be so sure? Well for starters, Tesla has already given us a saloon, SUV, pick-up truck and a sports car, so a more affordable family car seems the next logical step. What's more, Elon has already confirmed that the new car will cost around $25,000, which for us in the UK would equate to just £18,000! To put that in perspective, one of the cheapest EVs around at the moment, the Fiat 500 Electric, costs £23,000! 🤯
What's more, with some all-new battery tech expected to be found in this new car, it may have the ability to hit a range that blows all other competitors out of the water!
The only question is, if you were in the market for a cheap, new, electric car, would you choose a Tesla hatchback? Let us know in the COMMENTS!

I'm guessing it is going to be called the Model A and then in the future, a slightly bigger version would come because when you think about it the model X is really a bigger version of the model S and the model Y is a bigger version of the 3 so it would make sense for Tesla to release a bigger version of this car and I'm guessing it would be called the model F so then it would spell, the roadster is S 3 X Y A F
ford will probably sue them for that one lol
I want that model F to be a wagon
Model S, model 3, model X, model Y, Cyber truck, model A, Roadster, Semi Which spells: S3XY CARS

But safety is the main issue. Other thing if you buying a new generation of cars, you don't want to buy a car that is using leftover gas powered car parts from 2018. If you spend for a new innovative car electric vehicle, then you should get a new innovate vehicle inside and out.

One of my biggest concerns with the 4680 cell implementation is battery maintenance / replacement. When the cells are moulded to each other and the chassis in a vat of epoxy, I'm not sure how good that will be for the 2nd hand market, or the long term owners if problems arise.
If they make them good enough (e.g. 15 years waranty & 500k miles (as they already claim to have million miles batteries) then we could slowly migrate to structural batteries that would make more sense to recycle the whole car than to repair the battery package. This would significantly reduce the mass of EVs, the price and efficiency. And if 1 in 50 batteries fail in 10 and not 15 years - that would be great, indeed. PS: because of heavy batteries these cars have to have everything thicker, stronger, more powerful.
You forget one important detail, when Elon Musk says it's going to cost 25k USD, he means in the US. By the time it comes to Europe you can add at least 10k more in taxes, shipping, additional regulations etc. The Model 3 costs only 35k USD in the US or 29k Euros, but in Europe it starts at 43k Euros :) Edit: For those saying that it will be cheaper because it will be build in Berlin. The taxes and regulations in Europe are much higher than in the US, being built in Europe will reduce some costs or maybe it will only increase Tesla's profit, but in terms of the actual price it will never be 25k USD like in the US. To give an example a VW Passat in the US starts at 22k USD or 19K EUR while in Germany (where the VW is also made), starts at 34k EUR. 15k Euros MORE EXPENSIVE!
Vat in UK is 20% alone, if UK really wants people to switch to electric must offer tax breaks

Structural battery. Does this mean you' ll need to throw the whole car away when the battery health goes low?
I don't think like this They made easy access to replace, probably.
There are plenty of cars and motorbikes with engine as a structural piece, we don't throw away the whole vehicle if the engine blows up
That means, that the whole Battery is part of the car. Previously, the batteries were carried as "dead weight" and didnt improve the stiffness of the car or the crash stability. I could imagine, that several reinforcements in the structure of the battery leads to less weight, improved crash performance and dynamics of the car.
Battery would probably able to be changed. Tesla's plan is to have the battery last 1 million miles which is more than most cars are driven for anyway, so by the time the battery degrades enough for you to change it, you'll have changed the car already. We'll see how that one plays out though.
Ferraris also have structural engines. Do you have to throw them out when the engine dies?
Nice renders. Best concepts I've seen so far. On FSD price, Elon has said it will probably get more expensive, not less, as it gets better.

The Tesla Model Y from Berlin will be the first Tesla vehicle to use these new 4680 structural batteries and the new manufactory methods.
@DriverandtheKid no, that's not the case, they have them in running test mules already. Production at volume is the difficulty. Tesla, LG and CATL will be producing these batteries alongside Panasonic. Elon tweeted back in September "Also, maybe the presentation wasn’t clear that we’ve actually had our cells in packs driving cars for several months".
@DriverandtheKid They have been tested and they work. At battery day Tesla just said they needed to improve the yield. Probably meaning only 30-40% of the batteries was good enough for putting into vehicles, but the batteries work and all they need to do is to improve that number to +90%.
Unfortunately it won’t stop my S from rattling and trim falling apart..maybe build quality should be addressed first
@@alanwayte432 Just your luck! All of these "problems" will be solved with Teslas new structural battery and the new manufactory methods aka. giga casting machines. I am very interested in a good hatchback - if VW will sell the ID.3 here in the US, it would be at the top of my list. If this new Tesla is anything like the ID.3, then I would seriously consider it. Interestingly, VW has managed to use a flat battery in the floor, in the ID.3. Rear wheel drive is great! Roominess and practicality, with nimble handling and maneuverability, is exactly why I love hatchbacks. I think that Tesla should either call it Model 2, or Model 1, or maybe just call it Hot Hatch.
My concern is how easy (or difficult) will it be to service the battery pack if it is integrated into the car's base structure.

Hello Mat, please consider to test also Dacia Spring !
0 star safety rating... do you really want people driving that?!
Isn't the cheapest electric car at the moment Dacia spring? In romania starts from around 8k
Love this channel, it shows what cars I'll be driving when I'm a pensioner!

The back of that render looks very sharp!
Yeah, cause it looks like most hatchbacks from the past 10 years.
Indeed, much too sharp and out of date to be a Tesla
2 questions: 1) Will the structural batteries be replaceable? 2) Will they really make it £18k in the UK or will they do what most companies do and turn the £ into a $ with no conversion and therefore try to sell it here for £25k?
Whatever they call it I would definitely buy this over the VE iD3! Can’t wait to see the production models!
If it looks as good as your Render, then I love it 🥰

My 6 year old model s is on its fourth battery pack. This is not typical; I spank the range, always supercharge, and have had a couple of packs with faults. My question though, is how easy is it going to be to switch out ‘structural batteries’? I can only imagine it would be a nightmare.
I would prefer the I.D.3 over this or the new Ioniq. Within the next couple of years there will be stiff competition not only in battery & motor tech but also in pricing. The new Yamaha motors are already being offered to manufacturers & the new BYD could really be a game changer for the whole industry.
If you take CarWow savings into account, it'll cost less than a bicycle
Sounds amazing but it must improve range to around 300 miles on a charge to get people interested. If it gets the range and the price point right it will definitely clean up!
Nah! I drive an e-Niro which has done 300 miles on a charge in summer, 200 in winter on motorways driving into the wind.... but I can’t drive that far without a stop. Think about it, you’ll be lucky to average 60 mph on UK motorways, even here in France you won’t get much change out of 2 hours for a 120 mile drive. People who bang on about ‘I’m not going to have one of those until it can do 400, 500, 600 are just talking out of their backsides, no sensible person drives for that long without a break.
Matt, please get somebody in your team who will do your color grading. You look like an undead xD i hope this car is available at the end of next year in europe, cause my leasing is running out and i love hatchbacks.
Structural batteries. Sounds nice and lowers the purchase price. But what about re-sale value? What would it cost to replace the batteries when they are at end of life cycle and form part of the structure of the car. Sounds like an expensive operation, which will have a negative effect on its re-sale value. So in the end, an ID3 or similar can turn out to be much cheaper in the long run?
Electric cars are getting affordable. And I love it!
probably going to be called model 2. and yes i'd definitely pick it over vw id 3
I think it is going to be called Model 2.
My 2019 Mazda 3 is payed off in sept 2024 right around the time this will hopefully be available. It will definitely be on my short list when the time comes.
I was thinking the same thing, Kevin - my 2015 was paid off in 2020, now just to continue the drive until it's time to upgrade, straight into an electric :)
Living in the City I'm looking for Smaller Tesla... I hope all navigation will be available, I'll probably pay for 4wd (But NOT performance version) all about safety and quality. Great Video G
Mat: Mercades first electric car was the EQC. Electric Mercades from the 1800s: Am I a joke to you?
Also forgot the b250e, with Tesla batteries ;P
MercEdes
Genuinely very interested in this!
Fantastic video. Excellent run through.
$25000 is indeed about £18000. However, USA prices omit VAT, so it's really £18000 * 1.20 = £21600. And there will probably be other charges to add on like a mandatory delivery charge. Expect it to be £25000 on the road in the UK.
Prediction: The next Tesla is going to be called "!" and we'll call it the EM for exclamation mark.
EM for Elon musk😏
I can’t wait for this!
The little sportster was a Lotus joint project.
So if the battery is performing a structural function how do you change it in future or repair if there is a fault - at a reasonable cost? Think apple and the new laptops where the battery is glued into the chassis to make it thinner - but a bugger to repair. Hope we are not headed in the same direction here. I’ll still be waiting for solid state batteries or some graphene-esque game changer.
Can you drag race golf 8R and A45s please it's been a while waiting for it

I hear there a is a Lexus Concept called the Lexus Lq. If Mat could talk about that , that would be amazing
I'd believe it when i'll see it. Because the Model 3 was supposed to be under 35k$...
And in Europe it start at around €50K
Rip is Indians cuz the Tesla Model 3 here is f**king 1.5 crore whereas the real price it should be is 22 lakhs which is much lower
@@dstfno Even in the US it costs at least 37k. But they try to trick you (as usual with Musk), by including a Californian tax break of 1500$ and gas savings of 5000$... Which means that a Model 3 costs in fact around 30k ! Or not.
In fact, this "5.000$ gas savings" is such bullshit. I made some quick maths, and, with an average US gas price of 2.86$/gal, with a 35mi/gal fuel efficiency, it would mean that you'd have to travel over 60.000 miles before you saved 5.000$ in gas. With a 25mi/gal efficiency, around 45.000 miles.

With a battery forming part of the car how expensive will it be to replace the battery when it fails ? The second hand value must be affected by the cost of replacement parts . While the battle is on to make batteries cheaper and to increase range is the longevity of the battery improving . How many miles can any Tesla travel before the battery needs replacing ? Are we going to fill scrapyards faster with electric cars ?
Model Z. After the generation that will most likely be a significant percentage of its buyers!
Maybe Model A?🤔
If that comes around $25000,that would be the most popular electric car on earth ❤️
Provided it's sold world wide, they seem to struggle to get anything to the uk within a year of the cars launch
@@fewik8567 They basically can't make enough cars, hence the building f so many new Giga factories. Europe is waiting for the Berlin plant to open, however, picking Germany may come back to bite Tesla with all the delays and permitting bull they are being subjected to, it this rate, Texas will be open first. It's a shame the UK did not push harder for a plant, and yet I read yesterday, we are getting a Gigafactory - only it's not Tesla, it’s some never heard of startup, that looks to be built exclusively on government grants and bull - supposedly going to make batteries for cars, but who knows what tech and when that might be (plenty have tried this before, and gone bust, even Dyson gave up).
It would be greatly appreciated if you could include the range in Kilometres as well, just for the rest of us watching you that's in Europe and not in the UK
Matt, the UK cost won't be Sterling equivalent of $25k - it'll be circa £25k. Still good value though
