The time has come for Mat to review the Tesla Model S Plaid!
It’s the all-new version of Tesla’s world-famous saloon, and Mat’s about to find out just how much it’s changed compared to the previous edition.
Starting with the design… Well, it’s not all that different! Chrome accents from the previous edition have been swapped with black, while a boot lip spoiler has been added to the back and the looks up front have been made sleeker.
Once you step inside, the biggest change is the introduction of the yoke steering wheel. The infotainment screen has also switched from portrait to landscape, and plush quality materials can be found throughout - no surprise given the price starts at £96,000!
However, the biggest change compared to the old model is the performance! With one motor up front and two at the back, the new Model S Plaid can deliver 1,020hp & 1,400Nm!!

Let's be honest here. We have a good grasp of the Plaid from other channels. But we're still excited to see that title from Matt and Carwow. And the upcoming Plaid drag races...esp a potential Plaid vs Rimac drag race.
No point in a dragrace between the Plaid and the Rimac. The Rimac will crush it. Other than that, the Plaid will no doubt be among the quickest cars in the market.

That steering wheel only works in racing cars which have super quick steering racks that go from lock to lock in 3/4 turns, and they don't need to do parkings, 3 point turns or slow speed maneuvers.

@@aces567 The good average is 2.1-2.2 seconds, with 1ft roll out included. Tesla says its 1.99s*, but notice the asterisk, that means its the number without the 1ft roll out. Which is actually correct. People have been able to get it even bellow 2.1s which is less than 1.99s*

I have a feeling that the steering wheel could be a very bad thing in a quickly arisen emergency situation where you just react and have to turn quickly back and forth. You would most likely lose grip of the wheel and not manouver as intended.
7:04 You can actually disable the auto lock and unlock function when you’re at home in your garage or driveway. The car will remember your home location automatically. It will still unlock when you touch the door handles and lock using the key.

@@alexk3469 Id take the plaid over the Panamera. Panamera is way too overpriced. Slap some carbon ceramics on the plaid and considering its a lighter 1000 hp car with way more tech and practicality, i get why mat chose the plaid over panamera.
For the horn, if you just slap a bunch of the buttons on the right it'll press the horn apparently. :) As a fallback to make it less of a problem to hit in an emergency.

indeed. It after all a large 4 door luxury sedan. A lot of people forget that and say its a drag car but tbh, its pretty well rounded. Not something to take round the bends but something to daily drive and annihilate just about any car on the road.

1:03 - Those "too small" 19" wheels translate to a quicker 1/4 mile time though. I have 12,000 miles with the yoke and it works just fine. 16:25 - Motor Trend measured 2.07 seconds on an unprepared track (and theirs had the slower 21" wheels).
Brooks from dragtimes tested the plaid and got several runs in the 1.9 second range on the street with the 21s!!
Mine broke after one day. Main drive unit failed. Took seven days to diagnose, and nearly 3 weeks to get it repaired. Not fun. Oh and the door handle broke on day one as well. Had the same door handle issue on my 2014 model s. Can't stand the steering wheel. Going to sell it the moment I get the pink slip. They won't take it back for a refund. Really kicking myself for buying it.

And that's the problem of listening to the Tesla marketing. Yes the marketing is very good - Elon Musk is a tier 1 salesman - but when you're paying so much for a car in such a competitive environment, it is unacceptable what Tesla are offering for what is really a one trick pony...

@@ultraguy8771 yup, that's what happens when you take a 1000hp road car on the track! a Taycan would have had the same problems on stock brakes, that's why people buy PSCB's or Carboceramics, just do the same on the Plaid and upgrade them, it's that easy. Plaid already destroyed a prototype taycan on stock brakes tho, 12 seconds on the Ring

Would of been interesting to see the brake test. A lot of complaints about the lack of brakes in comparison to the amount of power
You even have to buy better brakes and the 21" wheels if you want to unlock the higher speed as it doesn't actually do the 200mph sales claim either yet.
The normal brake test will be ok. The problem is high speed braking, and repetitive high speed braking on tracks. The car is too powerful, too fast, and too heavy for the standard steel brakes. At normal trafic speeds, no problem.

Its amazing and I really do love how it looks. What I dislike about most new and futuristic cars is the overuse of touch-screens. I do understand, in todays world, its probably easier to just have a screen with a computer and just program all the things you need in it, then design buttons with all their wirings and stuff, but if your screen is faulty, you literally lose half of your cars functionality...
... no. You continue using Voice Control, or your Smartphone Screen until you get it fixed.

The real problem with a wheel like that, is that you can accidentally hit the top of it, and knock the whole car into oncoming traffic. That's so great about a round steering wheel: the shape deflects a hit.

Just a few things: - Weird Plaid badge is only for the first few reserved. Most have 'PLAID' spelt out in letters. - Don't need to press the small horn button to sound the horn. If you cover multiple touch areas there with your palm it will also sound the horn. - Very enjoyable review, looking forward to more Plaid content from the channel.
Really keeping my fingers crossed for Tesla to build a version with full steering wheel and stock buttons for frequently used functions while driving so that I don't have to take my eyes off the road and fuff around the touch surface.
They won't. Gimmicks like that are Tesla's thing.
It’s unfortunate and they’re truly missing out. The yoke holds the car back by a lot, and so many aftermarkets are going to fix Tesla’s wheel, and make so much money off of that that Tesla could’ve made themselves had they at least had an option for a normal steering wheel. Tragic.

Got my 2022 Model S Plaid and it's incredibly fast! I am getting used to the yoke but the horn and the glove compartment button on the screen are too much. Overall, I love it!
How about the range? S Plaid has a lower range than S I reckon?
the horn is actually easily engaged if you just quickly palm the right side of the steering wheel where the buttons are.

You're going to get tons of content from the Plaid. You will want to race any and every "quick" or "fast" car that you have, including the tuners, FI cars, Rally, and fast bikes. I can't wait to see them!

Surprised by the Buy verdict from Mat. I was sure he had an issue with the Yoke. Honestly it is the fastest car you can buy which is also a great family car. A lot of people won’t like it but Tesla don’t need them to fill their orders
Quickest but not fastest by a long way. Even the 2003 Jaguar S Type R has a higher top speed with well under half the power. Even purely in terms of acceleration, it launches very fast but there are quite a number of cars which beat it accelerating from 30mph including the 2007 BMW M5. It has the imoressive 0-60 figure but that's it really. It just launches very, very fast and unless you like spending on tyres you'll rarely use that anyway.

You should do a throwback to the old Model S P85. First performance model. Basically a classic at this point. Rear wheel only. Able to turn traction control off. It's like a silent muscle car. Got one parked in my garage right now in AZ.

I still don't understand society. The build quality issues, the brake issues, the need to distract yourself while you root around in the menu looking to make adjustments to things that you need to use throughout the drive, the many gremlins that people are experiencing, the issues with paint quality, the fact that dealers are sometimes unable to figure out why things don't work on the vehicles, etc.... Teslas are still flying off the shelves at a rate that's unfathomable. It's like each vehicle comes with crack in it and everyone needs to get their fix.
Because most people don't have these issues...

Awesome Review! And love the humor. I think the reason you got a 2.4 second 0-60 could have something to do with the road conditions. That road appeared to have a lot of sand and dirt on top of a pretty old surface so traction probably was far from ideal! You should try launching it again on a newer road surface, that isnt covered in sand!
... or going uphill and through a (very) small curve as these launches seemed to be doing.

I’ve been really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the Plaid. Looking forward to more great content.
I bought one as well. Mat's assessment is spot on. It's far from perfect, but its hella fun! A lot of my favorite cars over the years have been like that - some were HORRIBLE cars in the conventional sense, but I loved them to bits nonetheless. And Mat didn't get a chance to try out the newly release Track Mode, which is a nice update in several ways - from stiffer suspension that you get in Sport mode to much stronger regen braking (which helps, but doesn't cure, the weak braking performance). The automatic lock/unlock behavior is configurable so you can make it behave like you want. There is a tradeoff between how quickly it locks behind you and such and how twitchy it is. That's 100% adjustable. And the horn also has a secret - you don't have to hit the button perfectly. You can just cover that entire section of the wheel with your palm and that, too, activates the horn - its much easier if you need a kind of a panic honk. Regarding the 0-60 performance: Mat was on smooth blacktop roads with some obvious sand or dirt - yeah, 2.40 seconds at 50% charge is about right. But put the car on concrete like the highway he was on, with 70% charge or more and you'll get 2.1, sometimes even 2.0x seconds without subtracting rollout. Yep - on concrete roads I can get 2.08 seconds of TRUE, honest, no rollout games 0-60 time. But the best part of acceleration is ABOVE 60mph/100kph - this car's acceleration doesn't fall off after 60 like the Taycan does when it shifts into 2nd gear. Nope - the Plaid pulls and pulls and pulls and pulls. You don't really notice the relentless acceleration falling off until 110, maybe 120mph. And even then its only just. It will outrun just about anything all the way to the now improved 175mph limit. Once the carbon ceramic brakes are available this will have several benefits. First and most obvious, it will cure the braking issues 100%. The new rotors are 420mm which is on par with the Taycan Turbo S (which is several hundred pounds heavier). But it will also reduce unsprung mass - improving handling. Last - it will lower the rotational inertia of the wheels, which will slightly further improve acceleration. Last thoughts: The charging performance of Plaid beats everything out there, hands down. It may not be the peak KW best, but in terms of range added per unit time, its tits. And the overall range of Plaid at 350-400 miles (even though we ALL know Tesla overstates this), is still far better than you'll get in many EVs. Yes the Lucid Air is better - but its heavier, less sporty, and almost none exist right now. Plus there are far fewer places to charge it. The EQS is also super nice with its 108kwhr pack - I just don't like the look of it and its not nearly as sporty. Personally I think once the new brakes are out this will round out this car and make it super nice.

I had a Plaid since September and yoke is great. Getting use to the buttons is the part that takes the most. But after a few weeks muscle memory kicks in and you are good to go. No complains here. Love the yoke.
Things I don’t like: - Steering wheel - Gear selector - Not able to get chrome instead of black - Feels like there’s more tech than neccesary. Only makes it difficult to use What I like: - Speed and stats - Interior - Exterior design - Storage

Matt's the only car reviewer I can genuinely expect an unbiased review from. And he's pretty knowledgeable about how EVs work, too. I'm really interested to see how he feels about the yoke and the performance after owning the car for a couple of months. Another interesting thing: the range was never mentioned, because for 95% of driving scenarios out there, range anxiety just doesn't exist anymore.

Love your “tell it like you see it” no sugar coating review style. That steering wheel is a big question mark to me. Maybe for the people who have a bevy of other vehicles at their disposal and this is not their daily driver. Aside from concern about accident avoidance, seems it would promote fatigue in not being able to rest a hand on top. And what about one handed driving? Yes, I realize the car can assist in “auto pilot”. Couple that with having to find that little horn button in an instant!
The yoke steering weel is a gimmick. The things you really need to see should be on a HUD
it's really good for one handed driving. More comfortable than a wheel actually
Ive been daily driving one for a couple of months. It did take me a while to adapt - but I have found that fatigue is actually not a big deal. The yoke is a bit wider and allows you a VERY comfortable hand resting position with elbows easily on left and right armrest areas and is actually more comfortable than a round wheel because you have to stretch further to do that with a round wheel. Overall yes - its a gimmick. Sort of. There are ways that it is, but also ways in which it is very functional. I've gotten very skilled at parking, 3 point turns, and much more. My take is that everyone is used to decades of memory using ONLY round wheels - so it absolutely takes longer to adapt. But it is fairly easy to use after a longer-than-normal adaptation period.

Yes you can, the voice command can control all of the settings
I just tested this on my Plaid with the latest software (updated TODAY) and it doesn't recognize this yet. That's not to say it won't with a future change. I can imagine that command would be useful.
@@timothygillette3659 it doesn't, the only thing on my older S that is in a menu and I want access to is fog lights. However, it's not possible to turn on the fog lights with voice commands.
That gearbox would drive me absolutely mad backward step, and that steering wheel is a gimmick. However you can't complain about the performance it's insane, the boot space is also fantastic. Shame the rear seats are so low though.
You can't have a low car with high seats though.
It was designed that the Tesla chose for you the right gear. This placement is just for exceptions.

The S is the only Tesla model where the design works well with the proportions. The interior is a step up from the older one but the yoke looks like a dumb gimmick which will probably make your chances of crashing higher. I can appreciate the performance but it’s the accessibility of performance these days that has diminished the appeal of it overall in my opinion.
You may well be right, but a counter argument is that the yoke almost forces you to keep two hands on the wheel for turning. In America, where everyone drives with one hand almost exclusively it might actually be safer, not less safe.

The 0-60 measurement on Little Tujunga Canyon road (my old stomping ground) is noticeably uphill. Looks like he had some fun in the Santa Monica Mountains, too.
You don't need to find the horn button, you can just cover the entire right portion of the sterling wheel to make high frequency horn sound. It's pretty good in an emergency as you don't need to smashing the horn as the car will do it for you😅
why not to put horn as it exist on all vehicles, if it still hase big round thing in the middle almost all cars has airbag in the steering wheel and at the same time horm... stupid idea...

After have experienced a lot of vehicles (from 5cylinder Volvos and 6cylindrt Benzes to tuned hot hatches)the Tesla is a great car. Yeah it’s not the best (but not one car is the best because there are a lot nice cars). After a long ride in the backseat of a Tesla I can tell you that it’s really comfy and quick. Also the software is really good, and the supercharging thing is also the best.
Tesla upgraded the S and X with matrix LEDs just a few days ago actually. And ccs charge ports for international customers.. so no more adapter for new customers.

The boot space numbers should be taken with a grain of salt since Tesla uses the (SAE) standard that measures volume all the way to the headliner while the German, Korean and Japanese brands use a different standard (VAD) which measures volume up the top of the rear seat. Model Y boot for example is about the size of the one in the VW ID4 although official numbers seem to suggest a 300L difference.
They are very very creative with their marketing, like claiming it’s the first road car to do 0 to 60 in under 2 seconds, when they don’t actually take that time from a standing start. Tesla aren’t very honest in their advertising it has to be said.
In USA VW reacted and now claims 30.3 Cu ft which is 853 litres behind the second row.

The yolk is actually really easy to use, it just requires a different approach. It certainly improves the view of the instruments regardless of the height of the driver. Once they go to full self driving it’ll be even less of an issue. The car is way outside of my pay grade, but I’m glad it exists. No other 5 seater comes close, to be fair virtually no super cars do either. Very nice

Performance is also limited by surface traction. In this video on launch it sounded like traction control was doing some work. Telsa's numbers are from a drag-strip, which have a very high traction surface.

Read lots of negative comments re the yoke, but you guys should really try it out , its so easy to use ! I put one on my 1996 vw microbus (the steering is super light cos all the weights in the back ), and it was way better than the colossal awkward standard vw steering wheel

To be honest, the S is the only Tesla I would consider at the moment. It’s the most conventional to use and easier for all of us transitioning to EVs, apart from the wheel, which you don’t need to reinvent, Elon….. At least give the option to have a round wheel. Have the yoke for the inner 12 year old, normal wheel for the grown ups.

I considered an S Plaid, but for about half the price, I got a 2021 3 Performance - which is no slouch - and a much more engaging drivers car IMO. If you're looking for a large luxury with a MASSIVE kick in pants, obviously the Plaid is where its at, but beyond the straight-line speed, not really my cup of tea as it is VERY big compared to the nimble 3.
What you fail to do is use the voice commands that save all that faffing around with the screen and so on. They are so accurate.

the plaid badge you didn't like is actually aftermarket, not stock, unless the one you're reviewing happens to be one of the first few dozen delivered in person at their launch event.
The launch plaid's didn't have the actual "plaid" word badge. Not sure why anyone with a launch plaid would add the "plaid" letters.

Totally agree with you about the stalks. Who on earth thought buttons were a great idea? The hooter button is idiotic. I opted for a wheel instead of the yoke. Otherwise, it's a brilliant car.
I can tell you from experience (Tesla, not plaid) that it's the greatest car I've ever driven, has made all other cars obsolete, and I cannot see myself ever driving anything else, ever. Cyber Truck on order to pull my travel trailer around the North American continent in retirement. My 3 will go to my daughter, currently 14 years old. The amount I save each year on gas equals 6-7 of my 12 monthly payments. I've calculated my net cost (gas, maintenance, finance payments, etc.) to be around $200-$225 per month with nothing down since all the rebates covered my down payment.
