Predator hunting using thermal imaging.
Why Do We Hunt Coyotes?
Coyotes are presently the most abundant livestock predators in western North America, causing the majority of sheep, goat, and cattle losses. For example, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, coyotes were responsible for 60.5% of the 224,000 sheep deaths attributed to predation in 2004. The total number of sheep deaths in 2004 comprised 2.22% of the total sheep and lamb population in the United States, which, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA report, totaled 4.66 million and 7.80 million heads respectively as of July 1, 2005. Because coyote populations are typically many times greater and more widely distributed than those of wolves, coyotes cause more overall predation losses. The United States government agents routinely shoot, poison, trap, and kill about 90,000 coyotes each year to protect livestock.
Coyotes typically bite the throat just behind the jaw and below the ear when attacking adult sheep or goats, with death commonly resulting from suffocation. Blood loss is usually a secondary cause of death. Calves and heavily fleeced sheep are killed by attacking the flanks or hindquarters, causing shock and blood loss. When attacking smaller prey, such as young lambs, the kill is made by biting the skull and spinal regions, causing massive tissue and bone damage. Small or young prey may be completely carried off, leaving only blood as evidence of a kill.
In the absence of hunting pressure on coyotes practiced by rural people, urban coyotes are losing their fear of humans, which is further worsened by people intentionally or unintentionally feeding coyotes. In such situations, some coyotes have begun to act aggressively toward humans, chasing joggers and bicyclists, confronting people walking their dogs, and stalking small children. Non-rabid coyotes in these areas sometimes target small children, mostly under the age of 10, though some adults have been bitten.

As 4th generation ranchers and farmers, hunting coyotes is not just a hobby or a pastime for O'Neill Ops. They have a duty to protect the cattle that they raise for food. For them, predator hunting is not merely a sport, but a way of life.
James O'Neil has been hunting and shooting since he was 4 years-old. He started out helping skin coyotes with his father when pelts brought a 100 dollars a piece, and eventually learned how to call coyotes with his father and grandfather during coyote calling competitions.
After years of honing his skills at predator calling and hunting during the day, O'Neil helped pave the way for hunters in South Dakota to be able to use thermal and night vision optics to effectively hunt predators at night.
O'Neil played an important role in helping to convince the South Dakota legislature to allow private land owners to use of night vision and thermal scopes in conjunction with calibers under .225 inches in diameter.
The change in the size of rifle rounds allowed for use with NV and thermal imaging is significant because one of the most popular varmint hunting rifle rounds uses a .223 caliber bullet. The .223 caliber bullet is also the most widely used caliber in AR-15 style modern sporting rifles.

  • Great video and thanks for giving us a demonstration of the thor. I keep seeing comments about people getting bored watching this. It's not an action packed video game. This is real life hunting, he did a great job calling in the predators, choosing his target, deciding when to shoot, and savoring the hunt. Also, for the bleeding hearts out there, if coyote populations get out of hand they encroach on chicken coops (where some chickens live before they end up at your local chick-fil-a lol). I have seen coyotes kill every chicken in coop and maybe eat 5 out of 50, the other 45 they killed for sport. They eat cats and smaller dogs, big dogs if the coyotes are overpopulated and desperate and are pack hunting. They attack calves and cows that have just given birth (they can smell the afterbirth/placenta if the cow has just calved and is too weak to eat it right away.) And if the cow is too weak or sick they and is too big for them to kill they will start eating it alive. They also spread rabies. I honestly don't expect everyone to know this, farmers and ranchers will understand. And it's part of the process of getting meat to the supermarkets or restaurants where it can be ever so conveniently purchased these days :) Thanks again for the video!

People like this are literally the definition of selfish. There are so many other more effective alternatives to protecting your livestock. And this doesn't fix the issue. This also isn't right dont you agree? That this way is reckless, careless, ignorant, and selfish? We have to care about both sides. Start caring about life instead of just their own. 1 shot 1 quick kill every now and then is 1 thing... but im talking about how these are only a few clips out of the thousands where they miss and absolutely screw up the animal having it suffering

You can see the same logic in the cat mouse situation. And also you can't say that man killing is Nature's way, simply because of technology. Would a man be able to kill a wolf without a fire weapon? Maybe, but ofc the chances are way higher with a gun. How is that the natural way? Guns are not natural, everything that animals have/are comes from Nature itself. A cat killing a mouse is natural, it's meant to happen. Another example: man using worldwide resources in his favor, and as we all know it's destroying the planet. How does Nature allow itself to get destroyed by something you claim to be the natural way? No other animals are destroying the planet, it's purely the human actions, again by the use of technology

They quickly dispatched the calf and then began a slow, violent killing of the cow by ripping it's intestines out through its anus. The farmer went to get his rifle, but it was much too late. By the time he got back the mama cow was on her side and one of the coyotes had literary climbed in her belly and was eating her alive from the inside out as she bellowed in agony. I never quite felt sorry for any coyote after that.

    • +Listening Point They rarely come that close to houses. Unless their population has over expanded like it has here where farmers are losing multiple calves per season, we're seeing them in town, etc. Hunters could plug away at them 24/7 and they wouldn't vanish. Hell you can youtube video's of people's dogs getting attack by coyotes. So don't pretend like because you've gotten lucky in your area (probably because someone is hunting them and they are paranoid of humans) that these guys are just making excuses to kill stuff. I know a farmer who lost 3 calves last year to coyotes, and 2 people who have lost dogs. Just like people who get attacked by bears, and cougars when their population gets too high, food becomes scarce, and they get bold and come near people to hunt.

  • The reason he is waiting so long to shoot, as many people seem to be remarking in here, is for two reasons. 1, when your actually behind the gun trying to hold still, its actually hard to figure out when the best time to shoot is in order to get a quick, humane kill and not make a bad, wounding shot. Real life isnt a video game, you cant just point and shoot like you can on a screen. Unless you dont care about making a good, humane shot, but then your gonna give these whiners in here more stuff to complain about because your being a douche. Dont give misguided people more reason to hate hunters. 2, In some of the clips like the one starting at 4:07, he is clearly waiting for them to come closer/within range of the rifle. Once again, this isnt a video game. shooting something at 300 yards is different than at 200 and 100 and so on. especially since these coyotes arent that big of an animal. Most of you probably couldnt hit a minivan at this distance, let alone a dog. remember in real life there are plenty of variables that games/movies dont account for. wind, unpredictable breathing or hands shaking, the rifle your using, the angle and distance you are shooting at, etc. Military snipers dont go through extensive marksmanship training for no reason.

I spent many summer weekends with 22-250 on top of high ridges with thermos full of coffee and an awesome roast beef sand which that one of the farmers grand mother used to make for me for protecting their livestock. what I saw here was an excellent job taking them out and protecting the livestock !

I'm fairly certain that these are farmers protecting their livestock aka how they support their families and themselves, and coyotes are viewed as pests that constantly threaten their way of live and destroy the few means to sustain themselves. They aren't an endangered species and they have the right to protect their lands. If you want to "dislike" something, search for poachers in Africa taking down elephants for tusks or illegal shark finning in the seas.

The farmer/hunter probably had a reason to kill that coyote. And hunters use all the meat and its whole body. Coyotes live everywhere and may be considered for being pests so at least he has a reason :)

    • Luis Amador You didn't read the first few words of my post..about being mindful of the situation. All life matters, but you can not compare an animal to a human being. If your way of life (how you support and feed your family, elders, people in need) is being threatened, especially by an animal that is not endangered and in fact overpopulated in many states, you'd be out there too with a rifle. Save some coyotes or potentially starve a family in this crappy economy? Hmm...no brainer.
