  • We use to own a large sheep and cattle ranch, about 50,000 acres in the mountains of New Mexico. Once we lost the use of positions, it only took about 10 years before we went broke due to loss of lambs and ewes. On average, toward the end we were loosing 20% of our lambs and sheep to mountain lion, coyotes and Eagles. Eagles were particularly damaging in the first few weeks of a lambs life. Today the US imports the vast majority of its wool and lamb (mutton) meat from Australia, New Zealand, Canada. The land is now not nearly as healthy as it was when we had sheep on the property. Sheep graze in a way that reduces brushy shrubs and low slung trees that kill grasses and cause erosion. Also, we never had fire issues in the past, yes we had fires but with the dead brush removed by the goats and sheep, and proper land management where grasses were at a healthy height fires just cleaned up the remaining brush with no loss of trees or structures.

    • Shadowman; It is not that hard. I have successfully taken fifty yard shots at rabbits at night using a flashlight and a 22 pistol. These guys are doing an outstanding job using AR's and night vision nonetheless.

  • Old trapper up here in Alaska had his Mini 14 modified up to 22/250. Took out an entire pack of 22 wolves in less than 2 minutes. At night with a full moon. Deep Snow covered ground. Regular setup. 3x9 scope set low. 55 grain FMJs. Range about 50-100 yards. Taught me to take the ones farthest out first & work in. Hed gottin into position by a moose kill. Wasnt there 10 minutes wrapped up in an open sleeping bag before the pack came in. One of thoes hunts where EVERYTHING worked out perfectly. Made $2,200 that night. Back 40 years ago that was a LOT of $.

    • Hunting wolves? Or are they a nuisance out there?

      @idontno0@idontno0 Жыл бұрын
    • @@idontno0 , HUGE problem. Big, vicious & they kill everything in sight. Vasty overpopulated & like gang bangers, the bigger the packs get the more vicious. They DO go on killing sprees just because they can. Once theyve cleaned out an area they move on until nothings left. Then they starve to death by the 1000s. Takes years for the prey species can repopulate. Not a FACT the Sierra Club will tell you because the TRUTH dosent get the $ out of their suckers wallets.

  • Nice shooting, guys! That rancher has a serious problem with coyotes. I can’t imagine the number of cattle he loses each year to coyotes. I have one suggestion for him: Coyote fencing, electrified. I know it would be expensive, but it would pay for itself, over time. I don’t know if ranchers have cattle insurance against coyote attacks (likely not), but if they do, having protective fencing would save on insurance rates.
