  • Hey! Any proven alternative for a “mini cellar” how deep does one need to dig, ect.

    • The depth depends on how cold and hot your area gets. If you're insulating and protecting your "stores" from cold or heat. We get very cold here and have to bury water pipes at least 6 feet to keep from freezing in the winter. If you use insulation you can lessen the depth. The cellar in the thumbnail uses mother earth as insulation. You can use closed foam insulation very effectively. Each 1" of foam will insulate the equivalent of 1/2 to 1 foot of earth (dirt is different all over the world). One of our cellars is 4 1/2 feet deep but it has a conventional room built over it so it has a lot of insulation above it and the walls from the ground up are railroad ties which are 8" thick and provide excellent insulation. It stays 35°-45° F all year. The cellar in the video is 1 foot deep and has a heavily insulated room built over it. It has 2 small space heaters (you can see it in the video, one is an alternate that will come on if the primary fails) on a thermocube that turns the heater on if the temp falls below 34°F (cougarridgeranch.com/where-to-buy-it/). It also has a 550gal reserve water tank in there, you can see that in the video too. The water acts like a heat battery and keeps the room a very constant temperature and the heater seldom ever comes on and provides us with 550 gallons of water in an emergency. Our houses on the ranch actually operate out of these reserve water tanks so the water is constantly being used and replaced with fresh water from the well. I do the same thing in the Walapini greenhouse. You can see it in my video kzhead.info/sun/jNCrhsuffqOcqZs/bejne.html , I have 2 55gal barrels that hold water for the greenhouse and they too act like heat batteries and help keep the greenhouse from freezing. There too, I have 2 small space heaters that can keep it warm for all of the plants. On a very cold year we can get down to -20°F. The two space heaters there can keep the walapini at 70°F in the spring when we're starting seeds but it still drops to 20°F outside and when the sun comes up, the temp will go up to and above 80°F. Do some research for your area and start digging!! Good Luck
