How to Hook Up A 3-Point Post Hole Digger, Drill / Auger

Post hole diggers on a tractor are life savers.
If you've evert slaved over an ArmStrong Powered post hole digger or just used a shovel you know the pain I speak of.
They can be challenging to hook up if you've never done it.
Things to remember:
3 point augers do not require and can not use a handylink top link so you'll have to take the one off of your tractor and set it aside for this tool.
Also;
1. The HIGHER you set the main frame center point on the auger to the tractor, the LOWER the auger can go into the ground and the the lift on the tractor will be less..
2. The LOWER you set the main frame center point on the auger to the tractor, the HIGHER the auger will sit on the tractor, the higher the tractor can lift it but the ground penetration could be substantially less.
Be careful here as lifting it too high can bind the swivel couplings at each end of the PTO shaft.
Always make sure you have a working PTO cover and connect the chains of the cover to the auger on one end and the tractor on the other.
This keeps the PTO shaft covered while it's rotating to protect anyone who may come near (you should NEVER allow anyone near the shaft while it is in operation).
3 Point augers are not built for the smaller tractors, the arms won't go wide enough to accommodate even the smallest auger.
Sorry if that affects you.
These things come in very handy not just for digging post holes, but for planting trees and to dig a quick six foot grave for a dead animal or treasures you want to bury!!

  • 👍👍👍👍👍Wow. What an amazing instructional video with very succinct safety warnings that clearly explains how the hazards manifest and what to look out for.

    • Thanks Sheila, I just don't think enough people know just how powerful even a small tractor is, let alone the bigger ones... had a friend lose an arm on a PTO when we were abt 14... he almost lost his life... that was before PTO's came with shaft covers!! At the cattlemen's dinner the other night they were showing us a video of serious injury after injury from tractor PTO's. One young man got free of it before it killed him but his head injuries were so bad he lost his eyesight... I guess that was on my mind finishing up this video!! Thanks for being a loyal viewer.

  • Guess a portable PHD auger bit is too small on the farm. But less dangerous for that particular diameter dimension.

  • Excellent advice, but I think it would be more stable if you had 2 Heavy steel Beams that the Tractor could roll on to that also hold down Drill Jig to stabilize it and assist it from careening to One Side or the Other. Make sense ?

    • Great point! Something almost what I have in mind... I usually have a hefty ranch hand handy to help... two of us makes a fast job.

  • I'll bet you get some rust storing that auger dug in the ground. If you had you a garden box of RR ties lined with some vapor barrier or better that stuff they line koi ponds with then you back filled it with your earth and dumped your used oil in that pit I'll bet you'd have to replace that auger screw never again
