That’s what happened to me when I finished TLOU PART 2

This game's story is basically how I imagine a Devil May Cry live action Netflix adaptation would be.

@@PiscesAustrinus they pulled a "Drake of the 99 dragons"
That is…horrifyingly accurate
I prefer playing this game than DMC 2.
@@fernandozavaletabustos205 In terms of raw gameplay, I agree. Yet even DMC2's story beats this one hands down.
I wouldn’t have minded a more grounded depressed Dante. Possibly distancing himself as much as possible from his identity after the death of his mother. Dying his hair black, slimming down, picking up really bad habits. It could’ve been an uplifting story of how he picked up his signature sass and style, maybe even darkly contrasting it by showing that it’s in part a sort of coping mechanism.
You know I actually thought that this was what the game wanted to go for lol
You know, I was going to say that for me the essence of DmC games is that they're silly, but, this as a prequel would be great

It's like how the followup to Mage the Ascension is Mage the Awakening. The base state you start out in becomes the ultimate thing to aspire to in the powered-down sequel.

they really did a naoto kurogane huh. blazblue stole dantes style so dante stole their style back
@@iusethisnameformygoogleacc1013 Er, isn't it the other way around? In Awakening, the character is always less limited than in Ascension, regardless of their level of development, for example, Paradox can be thrown into the surrounding space instead of just dying on it. And even more so, Harry Dresden (a character based on the Hermetic that the author played in Ascension by the way) at the peak of his powers can be created in Awakening at the start. However, perhaps this only applies to the second edition of Awakening, I am less familiar with the first.
The game that brought us: - Donte/Dino and near death looking first model - The Virgil Fedora (technically a trilby but whatever) - "Mun-diss" - Dante's swear session in a not Swurm Factory - The Virgil Mobile - Sparta the BDSM prisoner - Virgil pulling a Fetus Deletus - Virgil "Biggus Dickus" - And can't forget, "Not in a million years"... I worked on this game as an audio engineer, recording all the dialog in the studio and at the mocap stage. Despite all the grief this game has gotten, I have to say working on this title was one of the best experiences I ever had! Ninja Theory was amazing to work with and everyone had a real passion for the project, especially the creative director. I understand why this game was not well received but it will always have a special place in my heart. I agree it would have done better as it's own new IP instead of a Devil May Cry reboot. It is risky business changing a beloved franchise!
The music pumping when your style meter goes up was amazing. They even adopted that for DMC V.

In my opinion, with a little narrative tweaks, it could've been a pretty damn good prequel. Specially the relationship between Dante and Vergil, and the search for power for the last one, as we can see in his DLC. As a fan of the saga that played this game first, it made a lot of sense the rivalry between both for me when I played DMC3 for the first time. Canon or not

tbh the gameplay is amazing i don't even hate reboot dante (though yes og dante was more fun) but eh the story tried too hard to be edgy and serious.
They could've made Vergil so much cooler if in the final boss, Vergil activates a DT that actually turns him into a full demon. Showing Dante hasn't even scratched the surface of learning his Devil capabilities. The difference in power alone would've been interesting.
honestly i like to think both brothers have yet to really embrace their full powers as Nephilim, sure tapping into their devil powers allows Dante to alter time and Vergil gains a spectre, but how would their angelic triggers work or even Nephiliim trigger that has them both take their true hybrid forms?
Or an Angel trigger form which would've been actually relevant to the story
And I wish in the story mode, we saw Vergil using his powers more in cutscenes and/or gameplay so when he’s in his first phase, you know what he’s going to do. But when he activates his Devil Trigger, his move set completely changes, forcing you to adapt your strategy and keep on your toes.
The funny thing is that before Vergil became a final boss in Mission 20, Vergil did nothing in Mission 19 while fighting against Mundus. 🤣
@@sonofsparda80 The problem ends up being that the game does fuck-all to show why Vergil can stand up to Dante outside of being his brother when Dante does literally all the heavy lifting.

The "I'm back" with the music dropping gives me chills still.
I think on paper many of Donte's lines sound like something Nero would say, except his voice/mo-cap actor is no Johnny Yong Bosch and lacks playfulness and charisma in his delivery/body language for it to work.
Nero mostly works because he's the youngest and we know that he's really trying his hardest to be "cool" like the others with lots of hits and misses, usually landing lines and moments the most when he's actually not trying at all and he's just being himself: the temperamental yet kind and caring punk that he actually is. That's why his "edginess" works better, because usually when he brings it up he then gets beat down or someone simply mocks him for being a brat.

I think that, though they dug their own grave on this, was them souring on them after the fanbase's (generally justified, though of course shit like DEATH THREATS is never oka) reactions. Kind of a mess all around, and while there's aspects where they ARE victims (reiterate: can we please stop threatening peoples LIVES over VIDEO GAMES), they kinda overall the party that contributed more of the bad faith to the pot in the end.
A lot of the really awful ideas actually came from Capcom and NT was basically forced to implement them, you can look at a sort of time progression of the concept art and similar in development material to see that yes at least at first they really did want to replicate the original pretty well. I suspect the more spiteful and disrespectful moments where a combination of reciprocal spite and sort of overcompensating and trying to convince themselves that they're doing it right because their too deep in cognitive dissonance to admite that the fans who are saying horrible things to them have a point even if on some level they agree. Matt McMuscles has a good video on the sort of development and marketing problems and office politics that went into making the game if your interested, he explains it better than I could, it's also just a good video in general.
@@GodOfOrphans The original Trailer of DMC was utter shit and nothing like the original Devil May Cry series. I'm pretty sure that Ninja Theory didn't want to replicate the old games and I don't think they even like Devil May Cry in the first place. Their reboot was bad. It had some things going for it (Combat, Level-Design, etc.) but all in all the game was garbage. I'm not saying that as someone who hates on this game, I played through it a few times and unlocked everything, also bought the dlc (which was good). I can say, after about 50 hours in this game: It's bad, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, maybe buy it in a sale for 10 bucks or better yet, for the same amount, buy DMC 4 SE
If a prequel is made it needs to be about Vergil when he was a child, show him growing up and learning how to use his devil trigger. Remember when the demons attacked Spardas' family, Vergil was stabbed with the Yamato forcing his demon to come out. That would be pretty cool to see kid Vergil pouncing off demons going DT and slicing them to bits.
this was my first DmC game, after unlocking a couple of weapons, the combos i could pull off were INSANE, long combos that use all of your weapons with correct timings to chain into each other, gather enemies and end in a flourish with the bullet rain into ground pound fist (forgot the names). they absolutely succeeded at making stylishness accesible to both newcomers and veterans. having completed DMC 5 multiple times now and coming back to DmC: Devil May Cry, it's no less satisfying to pull these combos off. it's VERY commendable that they managed to make this intimidating series known for it's high skill ceiling accessible enough for noobs to get the same experience as pros without holding their hand. naturally it took me much longer to get good at DMC 5 but that's neither a compliment or an insult. bit of a shame you didn't feature any footage of cool combos in the video. people watching can't really get the right impression for exactly how good and how stylish this game can be, which is important when you're discussing devil may cry. i'm sure there's lots of footage on youtube you could have used, or popped into training mode / mission replay to get some combo footage but oh well.
It's sad, because if it didn't have the baggage of being a Devil May Cry game, and had better writing, I think it would have been regarded as an under-the-radar classic.

DMC is, fittingly, in a limbo in terms of how to retroactively respond to its backlash. Because it’s simultaneously not nearly as bad as it’s made out to be, and much worse than it’s made out to be.
It was really pretty bad as a Devil May Cry game at release, and the final version only mitigated some of the more glaring issues. It was in some ways the prototype for how studios and marketing companies would deal with recalcitrant fanbases. By 2015 they started to understand the formula, which is to just call them racist and sexist when they don't want to buy their inferior product with the name of something they liked.
This made me laugh so hard. Probably the best comment I've read for this game.
People always say "it'd be better if it wasnt a DmC game" when that's the opposite of the truth. The only reason the game is as good as it is is BECAUSE it's titled DmC. Because of that fact, Itsuno walked into the room and made them fix a lot of the dumb bullshit they were otherwise trying to do. Without the DmC name there'd be no Itsuno influence, and waaaaaaaaaaaaay less Capcom money being funneled into it. It's a catch 22. If it wasn't DmC it would have ended up a completely different and probably far worse game, but no one would care. Because it's DmC it ended up being as good as it is, but everyone rightfully hates it for being a betrayal to the brand name it carries.
@@randomfox12245 I second this. The backlash to the initial backlash is way too strong with this one. Was a lot of the criticism thrown at it done in bad faith? Obviously. In the story, I think the biggest sadness for me was Vergil being a random villain in the last mission. If they wanted to reboot they should’ve committed to the different route. It would’ve been at least interesting to see the brothers be allies in a story.
Eh... Cain and Abeling is more fun.
Or like you could fix the whole plot by just making Vergil, when absorbed into mundus, absorbs some power. That’d also make him plot wise as strong if not stronger than Dante (since the entire game keeps repeating how weak Vergil is) and make him pick up the theme of, “oh sh*t this demon power feels good…it’s like I need…MOAR POWER” instead of “ah yes enslave humans *tips fedora*”
@@parisbower6939 I also would love the idea of Vergil's point of view, instead of being Dante for the rest of the game. Vergil was a good brother to Dante. Unlike his original counterpart, that Vergil is salty for no reason. Hates his son and brother for no particular reason. Imo the story had great writing if taken as its own thing. Imo it had a better writing than 2&4. But its not the kind of story DMC fans were looking for. A person can make the most well written "chick flick" ever, and we all think it would suck if it was placed under the title of "Devil May Cry"
I kinda agree. Although I generally think the gameplay is ultimately what's most important in a game, regardless of how crap the story is, a good story is something that will always stick with you first before how the game played. At least for me. It doesn't even have to be Shakespeare or anything like that. It just has to at least be fun and/or interesting, or have lore behind the universe or personalities of the game that leave an impression on you.
this was my first ever devil may cry game i played and i loved it i loved the dialogue most of the time and the music and combat i think this game is perfect for people getting into dmc
Thank you so much for making me realize how awesome resist and disorder sounds playing DMC
The funniest thing to emerge from all this is the fact that the chain smoking, foul mouthed, lackadaisy reboot Donte was basically cut down and made into DMC 5 Nero and Nico.
Donte is V+Nero+Nico
from the trailer i thought "quite and badass" Dante is a welcome one, but turns out just another punk xD
And the thing is, it actually works with Nero and Nico. Splitting the personality down into two separate characters really made things a lot better for the characters as a whole. Nico is a fantastic supporting character. I absolutely love her. She's got a weird sense of humour that hits just right and Nero is cocky but it fits him so damn well. They really made things a lot better by splitting the personality down.
Yeah, the director of DMC5 said multiple times that he enjoyed NT's DmC and was saddened that the fans reacted negatively towards it.
yes I also like lvl design in this game and combat system. It's just the writing suck and enemy designs are not memorable.

Especially the special edition, which added a ton of features to make it play more like the other games in the series

Whenever someone asks me about this game, I always tell them the same, " It would have been so much better, if it wasn't a Devil May Cry game ". The gameplay alone and some of its aesthetics are awesome and had it been a different IP instead of a reboot of a known and beloved franchise (one, that by that moment, already had a distinctive tone, look and feel) it would have been much better received.
Y’know, after you cut out the color-coded nonsense.
@@somethingcool1533 Oh yeah, forgot that little detail
Yup. Have said the same myself for years.
The gameplay is good and pretty fun but it's still not DMC if they hadn't of named it DMC I wouldn't have a problem with it. Definitive Edition is actually pretty good, but it was overshadowed by how much people didn't like the original. DMC 4's remake was just more of the original with more characters to add to a great game. Definitive was essentially just a massive upgrade to a game that people already didn't like. Even though Definitive was arguably better people didn't like what the Remake was. It still wasn't Devil May Cry and while they did make way more strong and better changes, everyone just wanted the originals. So DMC5 was born but ironically enough it has a hybridization of both styles in it. Nero is pretty much the Reboot Dante but with way more thought and effort put in, along with a better story. In fact all the breakers and revving is actually just a more refined Reboot Dante. Vergil is just the Definitive version of the Reboot Vergil, mixed with all of his other variations and on crack.
@@Zeromaru42 well just see it as a alternate universe there you go.

i like limbo. i really think the whole changing world concept is fascinating. a world that adapts to a threat and changes the environment according to that threat is an interesting concept
After all the time this version of Devil May Cry stayed in my game library, I finally played it last year. Every second, which I played it, I thought to myself: "Wow, this game has a really great potential as a standalone game. Only if it wasn't associated with an already decent franchise".
Except if it wasn’t associated with its franchise, the universe and gameplay would definitely be different in some way, and it might not have been as good as it is today
@@tezereth To be honest, pretty much all hack & slash games lack in deep story, so the story should not be the main focus here at all. Of course the gameplay and universe would be different, otherwise it would look like a pretentious copycat of DMC (and potential lawsuit from Capcom). Since I know Ninja Theory from works such as Ninja Gaiden franchise and Heavenly Sword, I don't think that it would have been a flop of a product. They already mastered their unique style of combat system, as well as physics. Kinda reminds me of Arc System Works with their unique combat system of Guilty Gear and Blazblue.

agreed a game with og dante and the goofy story but this games gameplay would be perfect.
I genuinely believe that if this game had different characters and a different story the game would be a lot less awkward. Like just let it be a one off ip to explore gameplay ideas. The original creators of the franchise even admitted that certain aspects were cool to them. The slowmo effect when you kill the last enemy, Virgil having a clone.... There were some ideas that they learned to make a part of DMC 5 and people love it. Gameplay is solid and had interesting gimmicks even if a bit simple compared to most Devil May Cry games.
@@Zayindjejfj Wasn't the original DMC supposed to be some other game and when it turned out that the idea is good, but not workable in that universe, they created this one? I think they could have gone the same route, but were too busy being petulant children.
The problem is the mechanics get old fast, except for the really small levels basically. The slurm factory is cool for a minute, but then falls flat rather quickly. Yeah it is a cool idea, but it doesn’t make it a cool reality. It needs to be way more fleshed out, and it seems like people automatically believe Ninja theory was going to be able to refine it while adding to it somehow. Just because they were beholden to making it more devil may cry like, doesn’t mean they were not open over in this area already as was. Honestly I don’t know if NT would have made it better, or not. They could have, but they strapped themselves to the DMC franchise, and should have known better.

Suzi's initial reactions was literally how I reacted back then... except for me it was actually denial protecting me from the horrible misused edge.
Luckily this was my first (and still only) DMC i've ever played and i liked it a lot back in the day. I immediately fell in love with art style, combat and level design. While i am not a fan of drum'n'bass and electronic music in general, the soundtrack didn't bother me and there were even some catchy tracks during fights that i really enjoyed listening to. The weskest points are story and characters, it's been over 6 years since i finished the game and i dont remember what the game was about, meanwhile i still remember a lot of locations from the game - nightclub, amusement park, Dante's family house or whatever that place was, a factory where energy drinks were being made and so on. I really liked the game so much so i started learning combos and experimenting with weapons which i usually never do when i play hack and slash games and mostly use 2,3 moves throughout the game. It's probably the easiest game in the series and combat is not that deep like in other games, but i was so proud of myself when i managed to get an achievement that requires you to beat the game on SSS rank on Nephilim difficulty (LMAO now when i think about this its so cringe because it's only a third difficulty and 4 remaining ones are unlockable) So yeah, i wasn't obsessed with DmC, but i really enjoyed playing it
It was my first dmc. Played it with my friend. Swapping after each level or boss fight. I enjoyed it. Still need to play the others.
"Eh Succubus, Comete Esta" -Donte' El Exterminador de Demonios
You had me at "I'm back"
I've actually heard cut snippets of dialogue and alternate takes from Dante in this game, and he sounds more like his old self. I feel like the dev team freaked out and changed a lot after the initial backlash and the final product is this weird hybrid between the 2010 trailer with personality traits seemingly ripped straight from Nero in DMC 4.
I played the game well after all the drama when I caught up on all dmc franchise because I wanted to play dmc5. I loved dmc for this mix of platformer and stylish hack and slash. The story is a bit generic but it seemed to me pretty much in line with the type of stories of the others dmc. The aesthetic of the game was beautiful and unique. The bosses were well crafted without being too hard (to some that's a downside, I can understand that). To me, dmc is a lot better than dmc4 for example. I kind of agree that the characters aren't very likable but I see each one of them as irremediably broken by trauma. Stone of the dialogues were over the top, true. Maybe had I been a fan of the original franchise, is have a different point of view. Funnily enough, while I could never get my sister to play any devil may cry, she like dmc a lot.
I always read it as Katt being in love with Vergil and Dante's attempts to get closer to her were being rebuked because she wasn't interested. She definitely seemed most hurt by Vergil's betrayal.
The prequel DmC comic did have Kat and Vergil fall in love, but Vergil decides to erase both their memories of it for their safety, or something.
In my original headcanon i think they really were in love and kat might have had his child (which would've been this this game's nero ) because kat was more broken about it than dante was (which makes some sense because dante never really knew his brother very much because he memories of him were erased from a long time ago) but quickly droped it and painted it as her reaction being of a daughter/student watching her father/mentor become a monster since this game tried (key word there tried) to develop dante and kat's relationship. Never really liked kat's overall character so i didn't look too deep into it 🤷♂️🤷♂️

I never got over how one of the developers tried to make Dante look exactly like him (same hair and same face). It just all seemed off and yeah i was one of the people that thought Donte looked like a drug addict.

@@nicktoons125 prolly isn't confirmed but the resemblance is uncanny honestly especially the early look
Tameem Antonaides looks nothing like Dante facially. He wore his hair in exactly the same style that Dante did in the original reveal, and when the game bombed he shaved his head and started looking like his version of Mundas. He really was a case study in how not to handle a belligerent fanbase, but I'm glad his team went on to make Senua's Sacrifice. That's definitely the kind of game they wanted to be making.

The lead developer wasn't used as the basis for Dante but more like the dude was promoting the game by having that haircut.
As a VERY casual DMC fan, when I heard it was getting a reboot my first thought was along those going 'Why the series is not that old?'. Yet I figured it's Capcom (as they had fallen into their 'chase the west' phase by this point) and they have been going down a strange path for some years. So the 'wait and see' game began and sadly the more I saw as info and trailers came out, the more I saw this was a disaster in the making. While Ninja Theory did not help themselves antagonizing the fans, the members of the fanbase who went around being toxic as well, two wrongs do not make a right. This DMC game just felt, well mechanically it was good but the characters and story felt like ass with some half-baked potential goodness for the story narrative in places. 'Donte' really feels like a try-hard edgelord wannabe Dante, lacking the charisma of our favorite demon-hunter. From where I stood, there was no reason to do this reboot, much less change the main character everybody loved so drastically. I mean yes, reimagines should allow for such creative freedom, but also if you change and established character too much; you risk losing what made the character endearing for the fans. This is why many reboots FAIL these days, if you lose the heart and soul of the IP you're 'reimagining' you might as well just make something new entirely. Given how DMC5 while narratively pushed the story forward, but gave us a lot of the same the fans loved, goes to show Capcom really made a bungle of a choice when all they should have done was let Dante and crew sleep until the right script for a good story crossed their desks. Ultimately, I'm glad this game came out because it served along with RE6 as a major wake-up call for Capcom to stop whatever drugs they were doing and rethink their current strategies that were leading the company into further dissonance with their fans. Aside from repairing the damage done to Dead Rising and giving Mega Man some overdue love after snubbing him and the fanbase from 2011 until the last few years; Capcom has been on a roll (save RE3:Remake as that game felt like a rushed product than a proper reimagine like RE2:Remake). I hope we never see them fall into whatever rut hit them in the end of the late 2000's and early 2010's ever again.
I remember buying this at gamestop a few years back by accident. I was looking for Devil may cry HD collection. I was a little disappointed. But oh well. All that changed when I actually played it. And I had a blast. I did enjoy fighting Vergil.
Good job describing this iteration of DMC especially the story and weird character development.
The thing I always credit this game for is that it's a pretty good intro to DMC mechanics. It retroactively made me a better DMC player and I felt more comfortable when I went back to play dmc 4 and eventually 5
Dude I’ve always felt the same way. I knew nothing about Hack and Slashes or even DMC Combat but after playing this game and slowly learning how the mechanics work I began to love it and inspired me to go back to the original series and I pretty much became a big Devil May Cry fan.
I fully agree with this. I got introduced to dmc 4 years back and just did basic stuff. Combo A, combo B, just the basic stuff. But when I played DmC, I learned to do combos, shifting between weapons while doing slick combos. And when I played Dmc 5, making combos became a breeze and trying to make smooth transitioning combos became second nature.
Would this be a good start for someone who doesn't get combos yet? I have played a few action games, but only casually. Could I learn the basics here?

Yeah, the OG games weren't trying to be fake-deep at least, they leaned into their campiness because they knew it was an interesting contrast to all the blood and violence and heavier plot elements and it worked well. But this game just feels like middle-aged men trying to imagine what would've been cool to a 15yo at the time and just slapping the DMC name onto it to fulfill the qualifications of being a reboot. I definitely think they should've attempted to reboot in a similar universe to the originals, but with new (hopefully better written) characters so that they weren't going in already stepping on the toes of veteran fans.
