Fun fact. When I was 12 I saw a video of Dead Rising on the TV show The Electric Playground. I was blown away. When I was 13 I saw the game being displayed at a local rental store. I had to ask my dad If I could rent it. (The game and the console. Since we didn't have the money to buy an xbox 360.) He said no. It was too violent. When I was 14 I had the money and was allowed to rent it. But when I arrived to the rental store. The clerk told me the game had received Sun damage by a renter leaving it on top of his console in the sun.... When I was 15 I got my first job. I still didn't have enough money to buy an xbox 360. So I bought the game. I had to rent an xbox 360 every time I wanted to play it. I loved the game so much I rented an xbox for an entire month.
Hardcore!
I was around that age by my sister was a lot older then me and spoiled me when I really wanted a new console/game.
I wish renting consoles was still a thing tbh
This story touched my heart, tbh. Very Zennial in essence /pos
I rented this from gamefly like 3 times. Used all my money to get a 360. I still play this game and have it on pc, ps4, and xbox 360 now. I got an xbox one just to play deadrising 3. Yeah like the best game series ever made. But the first is the best.
Peak RE and Peak DR are polar opposites in tone despite having the same ratio of comedy and drama. RE1-3 were silly apocalypses, taken completely seriously by their main characters. Zombie sharks, a big gray man in a trenchcoat and trilby, giant mutant plants and bugs, all played straight, because the main characters took them seriously. Meanwhile Dead Rising is a very serious apocalypse. Everyone's dead, people have gone feral in response to seeing all the trauma, its horrible. But Frank doesn't give a solitary shit. Its a comedyhorror game because of the perspective Frank brings to it, despite the horror being more grounded than it is in RE.
Frank *HAS* covered wars, you know?
And that's why fans love Frank. He gets the absurdity of life and just doesn't give af. His sense of humor in the face of complete insanity is legendary.
It seemed to me frank took his situation pretty seriously in DR. A few wisecracks sure but frank never acted ridiculous or like he wasn't in a life or death situation. That was up to the player/psychopaths
@@jayh5840 Frank encouraged chaotic behavior, though. When you crossdress as, say, Chuck in DR2, he complains. When you do it as Frank, he checks himself out and enjoys it. Frank takes the time to take pictures. Sure, you can argue its "up to the player" but you can tell what a protagonist values through what the gameplay rewards. And Frank's gameplay rewards taking pictures of people suffering before you help them, and taking pictures of zombies with pies in their face. And he repeatedly made it clear his primary motivation (for the opening third of the game, anyway, before shit got Really Dramatic) was The Scoop. And even once he accepted he had to do something ethically, the scoop was still really up there in terms of his motivations.
@@DARE0451 yeah, he takes pictures intended to shock people and draw them in for the media. Just because there's an achievement for changing into every outfit doesn't mean running around in panties is what frank likes to do. Frank reacts the same no matter what outfit you change into. In every cutscene, frank was serious and only tried to get to the bottom of the incident even if his priority was the scoop
"There is a ton of reading material in this game." Neat. "But I bet Frank would love to listen to it on the go." Wait- she isn't... "Well- thanks to audible-!" Well played Sphere Hunter.... Well played...

Really? He in RE2 remake? I might have to replay RE2 just to hear that. Thats really amazing.
Dead Rising 1 is still playable to this day. I wish they would remake it for current gen or make an ACTUALLY faithful followup.
When Birkin yelled _"G is my creation!"_ I thought that was Frank's voice. It had the exact same pitch and tone.

Yeah, Dead Rising is like the most weirdly charming jank game ever. One thing it does very well is construct a sense of place.
Nahh
HadesWTF Right! It was one of those games where once you played it for long enough, you actually remembered your way around without having to use the map. Probably helps that there’s a lot of backtracking, but you really did get the feel of that place. As “jank” as it was 😂🤘🏻
I remember Dead Rising 2 being disappointing after realizing how short one of the late phases was.
@Ball Weevil The Forge Engine of DR 2-4 will forever be unsupported, But Dead Rising 1 still has it's main MT Framework architects in place.
@Ball Weevil Heh, DR2 is by far the best sequel (and imo on par with the original because it did improve the gameplay a lot and coop is crazy fun) but Fortune City doesn't hold a candle to Willamette, I didn't find it nearly as memorable (maybe because of how much bigger it is) and it doesn't really change during night time (which makes sense since it's like a big casino city), Willamette was colorful during daytime with that stupid catchy music and all, but during the night it was completely silent and dark af, none of the sequels really did that again (they either go for a really colorful look like DR2 or...gray like DR3) and I really think it's a shame

flashergoldpower15 Yea, not only will the mode no longer freeze on Day 3 whenever visiting the food court, you can play at your leisure, rather than 14 hours straight if you want all the unlockables. And given that most of the mode consists of just waiting for Frank’s health to drop from hunger (20ish minutes for a lvl 50 Frank) any break is good for your sanity...
Yeah the convicts are pretty easy to kill once you get them stuck in a tree but I think it's just the intimidation that scares most players since they arrive when you're such a low level surrounded by a ton of zombies and with a survivor to rescue. Plus their song Gone Guru is just somehow a perfect weird theme for them.
Dead Rising1 was amazing, maybe the best of all, I can't even forgive how they made the DeadRising4, it's so incomplete, and lacks of most of the features you just pointed out
Yeah, I feel the same way with DR4. Capcom Vancouver literally made DR4 the DmC: Devil May Cry of the Dead Rising series.

the timer in Dead Rising is one of the most japanese things in capcom games.
Till this very day I still say “FAN-TASTIC!” Every time I take a picture.
As much as I love this series, I have one large complaint. How does an old lady manage to take down a fortified barricade while men attempt to stop her? That lady's either very strong, or those men are very weak.
Old ladies with dementia are some of the strongest people on the planet 😬😬😬
People also love their dogs, too. People have fought kangaroos, alligators, and even mountain lions and bears for their dogs. As dumb ass as she was for opening that barrier, I'm not surprised she found the adrenaline to do it. I thought the first thing at first when I first saw it, but nah it makes sense, in a way.
Remember to kill dumb people like that during the Zombie Apocalpyse

I freaking love Dead Rising. It's too bad the series had to go the route it did, I think if they had kept the original Japanese developers the series would probably still be around today.
Capcom Vancouver did a fantastic job with Dead Rising 2. I don’t understand how it all went wrong.

@@wintersong2266 They were called Blue Castle Games when they made 2. Since they did such a good job, Capcom decided to rebrand them as Capcom Vancouver.
@@jamesedleymusic Dead Rising 2 was pretty much the beginning of everything wrong with Dead Rising today. The series progressively got more mindless and exaggerated.
The best part about having to carry a survivor (piggyback or just lending a shoulder or even a hand) is that it makes you almost invulnerable: the physics engine adds the survivor's weight to Frank's weight, making it extremely easy to push back zombies before they can even attack you.

I love how well researched and constructed your vids are and honestly, the first DR is still, in my opinion, the best in the franchise because it blended both the seriousness and the humor so well.
It also just has better characters. Psychos feel like people who just lost it in 1. Cliff incapsulates this perfectly. He’s not supposed to be entertaining he’s supposed to be sad. Every other game makes them cartoons for the sake of “wow zany wahoo adventure time am I right? You kids loved how silly these characters were right?”. I will give the second game credit for its analogies involving desensitization and corrupt big pharma exploiting people who need a medicine to survive for profits though. These things have aged depressingly well.
@@Neogears1312 As much as it sucked that "Dead Rising 4" took out the psychopaths, I think the one that best illustrates the problems with the psychos in 2 is the one in the chapel, trying to marry that woman. There's nothing sympathetic about him, and no indication that he was ever normal. He was always a creeper, from the very beginning. And the snipers, too. I've seen people like that in real life, unfortunately, but that doesn't mean I want to see them in video games! There's a difference between a person who snapped, and people who are just itching for an excuse to hunt people, and the zombie outbreak gives them the perfect scenario. I guess it's supposed to make them satisfying to kill, but meh.
PyramidHead316 to be fair that one is made to mock a real human being. You’re not supposed to sympathize with him. Slappy really sells this to me though, as he’s just Adam but then they decide “nah remember Stevens death that was funny. Slappy is comedic relief now” in 1 the convicts stayed the silly ones, jo was always the despicable one, Adam was the creepy one with tragic undertones, cliff was a broken man the snipers were an allegory for the problems with gun nuts etc. they didn’t just flip the script midway through so jo is actually a silly character.
It was lightning in a bottle with it being a whole new concept. Everything after that was trying to recreate 1 but they kept taking out things that made the 1st one great.

Dead Rising 1 is the only game i will always play as much as it irritates and gives me anxiety, it's still one hell of a classic game of '06
I still love Dead Rising 1 even if I haven't played it in ages. I cared so much about playing it and seeing all it had that there's only two achievements I never got back on my original copy, the five and seven day survivor ones. It's one of those games that wouldn't get made today, and I mean in the "if someone took the concept and tried today, it'd be executed differently" sense. The timer especially wouldn't have made it through as it did, the first and second games were made into what they were by just how impactful the timer was, much like how the timer added pretty much nothing to the third game with how much leeway it gives. Love that you closed the video out with Justified, by the way. Also, how I beat Adam at low levels? Pick up a bunch of pistols and keep your distance. Shoot the balloons he blows and then him when he's stunned. Makes the fight a breeze. TJ Rotolo is also the only Frank West, there is no competition.

Another great video. I love it! I remember getting a 360 and 5 games which included this along with Kane & Lynch, Halo 3, GTA IV, and Army of Two. While I spent a considerable amount of time with Halo 3, I played and replayed DR to death. Even after trying to get into the other games in my early library which included the revered GTA IV, I STILL came back to DR. Here was a game where I truly felt I could go anywhere and do anything. Also worth noting, if you had a standard tube TV (which I had for the first few months that I owned a 360), you couldn't make out the text in the game which, outside of trying to figure out what ingredients made what drink, wasn't too much of an issue. That aside, the secondary attacks, the photo taking, the pick up virtually anything and use it as a weapon, the abilities you gained, the strategies if you wanted to save everyone (I managed to do this once) and the loads of zombies on screen, yeah, this game was awesome. I played DR2 and...I dunno. It lost some magic with me. I think it was the whole combining weapons or the fact that I got the good ending in my first play through, it just didn't grab me as much. Not saying it was bad, but yeah. I still preferred the first one.

What a fantastic video! I love this game so much. The time element is actually one of the things I think makes it so great. Having to make decisions about what you want to do if you want to uncover the truth, not being able to do it all, when most open world games now let you take all the time you want, is still such a breath of fresh air.
Great video. I have very fond memories with this game. We were 18 or 19 that summer, and my friend and I (RIP buddy) went to Gamestop. The dude behind the counter asks him "you guys want to pre-order Dead Rising? It's a game where you're trapped in a huge mall with zombies and everything is a weapon." He looks at me and back at him "hell yes I want to order Dead Rising!" We were not disappointed. The maniacal, side splitting laughter we had was priceless. Any time one or both of us had free time, we played it. I still remember when we had been playing it half an hour and he goes "are you hearing this dumbass music???" and we about died laughing. I also met my first real girlfriend that summer, and those memories among others comingle with this game for me. I ended up completing it, which is honestly something I rarely do. Fully leveled, saved all the survivors at least once, and then uncovered the truth. It was so fun to go back thru with the Mega Buster and humiliate the bosses. Playing this, we finally red ringed his early Xbox 360 the following February. Such good times with this game, so many memories. All I can do is smile at this.
Dead rising 1 is an amazing game! So many great memories playing this game.
Dead Rising is one of my favorite games of all time. The pure fun of murdering zombies in a mall, the crazy paychopaths, the tounge-in-cheek dialogue, and of course Frank West himself. I just love it so much.
Amazing video, made me really nostalgic ! I was about to go out and buy a 360 to play this again when you informed me in this video it had a PS4 port and I just checked and it’s on sale! Thank you for that
I just found this channel but I'm already hooked. Can't wait for more content
I remember when I first played this game I got my neck snapped by the final boss immediately, then accidentally clicked save. Meaning that was my ending as far as the game was concerned and there was nothing I could do about it haha.
I played the demo for this on the 360 back when I was like 9 years old. Always wanted to play it properly, but I never did. This review made me buy the PS4 version and I'm currently loving it. Thanks for this video!
I was hyped since you announced this video and god damn did you deliver! I hope you'll do the rest of the games too,I'm really interested to hear your take on them
About a week ago I started DR to 100% it then one of my favorite youtubers (you) uploads a great detail video on it. You have amazing taste :)
Best damn sponsorship segue I've ever seen in a KZhead video.
That was smoooooooooooth
When you think about it, the first Dead Rising was basically a triple-A rouge-lite.
Damn straight, classic game.
Great review/retrospective! This brought back SO many memories.
The spoiler warning and time skip option was a great addition to this video. It addresses basically my ONLY qualm with your content. Keep up the great work!!
Just thought I'd stop by and say happy Halloween to you Suzi and to anybody who reads this comment, have a absolutely fantastic day.
you to
I sort of missed this generation of gaming. This video has convinced me to give Dead Rising a try. Thanks!~
I never thought much of this game but your video actually kinda got me interested in taking a second look at it. It looks really fun
You just earned a sub and a bell for spitting the final boss to death. Seriously.. that gave me a hearty chuckle. This video takes me back. I gave up on some tasks in this game. Getting all survivors, the population kill count, answering Otis every time. These all took a backseat to the struggle of trying to read the text on my old, standard-def CRT television, finding scantily clad zombies to photograph for the erotic PP bonus (which was absurdly amusing), and making zombies slip on cooking oil. Okay, those last two weren't a struggle, but playing this without HD was a squintfest. The old lady with the dog initiating the onslaught of mall occupants was all too real for me and made my blood boil.
The fact that the 360 was able to handle that many zombies on screen at once was amazing and the boss fights were unique.
I like to pretend Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is the only sequel to this game.
I've been playing "Dead Rising 2" recently, and I like Chuck's determination to keep Katey alive, but what gets me is that he doesn't defend himself! Everybody's insulting you left and right, Jesus Christ defend yourself man! He starts making quips later on, but it's almost like he feels he has to make them. Dark humor, but he's not really that kind of person. Frank doesn't put up with any bullshit, or at least much of it. I started playing "Off The Record" recently, after the frustration with some of Dead Rising 2's things, and the first thing Frank does is immediately kick the asses of the thugs TK sent after him!
@@PyramidHead316 I adore Frank West, the main reason I'm not a big fan of games past Off the Record is the lack of Frank West! It's like "Sure, he's cool, but he's no frank West"
Just discovered your channel through your Dead Rising and Resident Evil videos. Love what I’m hearing; definitely subscribing. 👍🏻
I appreciate the deeper analysis you go into about the game's story. Bravo!
Oh god I LOVE the first dead rising. I feel like no one I talk to "gets" this game. A game built on interaction as it's design goal, with over the top western caricatures for bosses. I spent soo much time playing this game when I first got my 360. Is the salmon method common for Carlito 1?
Yes one of my favorite KZheadrs and one of my favorite games also who remembers the smallchainsaw with the 3 books?
Once you get those, you're untouchable.
I really enjoy your well in-depth analysis of these games . Even if I might not be interested in the game being talked about . You make it interesting and really fun as well easy to be as enthusiastic about it as you are . Seriously , you make amazing videos and I’m definitely subbing to see where you go from here . Keep up the amazing work! 👍🏻
15:20 I actually loved how you brought up Audible cause I was not expecting that.
