  • 13:35 By the way, the underwear Kidman screenshot is very typical of 3d body scan data that's been cleaned up. I recognize this because I'm a character modeler myself and worked with human body scans before. So it's likely her model started life as a real life actor that stood in a body scanning device in her underwear and the modeler retopologized the raw polygon data into proper edgeloops, then made the body symmetrical for rigging for the final asset.

    @rodneyabrett@rodneyabrett2 жыл бұрын
    • They have devices now that can literally just scan your full body appearance into a program? Like if I was rich, and wanted a game made about me, I could actually go to the studio or workspace, and have my whole body scanned in? And they'd just touch it up and add details to finish making the model look like me? Is that how it works or am I way off?

      @jakethesnake4040@jakethesnake40402 жыл бұрын
    • @@jakethesnake4040 Well, the full body scanners are these huge devices that are pretty expensive, but yeah. Common in Vfx especially for digital double work. However, what @Lying Figure is talking about is an alternative called photogrammetry, which is less expensive and is a method of extrapolating 3d shapes from a series of sequential photographs. It's gotten pretty good lately.

      @rodneyabrett@rodneyabrett2 жыл бұрын
    • @@jakethesnake4040 Like Lying Figure said, you don't need to be rich. A good quality camera, good lighting and a podium to rotate you while you T-pose are all you need.

      @DarthMcDoomington@DarthMcDoomington2 жыл бұрын
    • Then why don't any of the other characters have similar scans in their underwear?

      @goten339@goten3392 жыл бұрын
    • @@goten339 Because the dev team probably wanted her character to have more realism in the shaping. There's some stylization and adjustment for sure, but it probably started life as a scan. Hands always have to be made bigger too(scan data hands are very tiny). Her character wears tighter closes where as the male characters are in suits and you don't see the silhouettes of their body's physique compared to Kidman's. Female character modeling is actually very difficult(the female character in the last game I worked on was a struggle), way harder than a typical male character. The more subtle the shapes and forms, the harder to nail and the easier to screw up and have it look bad.

I was calm in the evil withinh 1 beccause it was linear and just an action game most of the time, the huge amounts of ammo i had even in higher dificulties made me confident, and dying all the time just made me frustrated. The Evil Within 2 made me feel helpless, beccause in higher dificulties, i was finally worried about using too much ammo and not having as much as i wanted to, the constant optional stealth section in the second game gave me more tension. And unlike a lot of people, one of my favorite sections is Theodore's blood sea, that area made me extra carefull.

  • I think that in case of TEW1 what matters is what do you consider a horror game should look like. I actually had a hard time getting into it initially, as it felt too hard, but after a few days of practice I fell in love with this title. It's uniqueness lies in this sort of hardcore-arcade'y gameplay - as it wants you to learn to be super precise and fast thinking. No other horror game felt as oppressive to me as this one - and it's actually very respectable move from Mikami and the dev crew, because here everything wants to rip you up and it doesn't care if you like it or not. Thinking about it, that is actually a good definition of real horror. In TEW1 you're being hunted, and in TEW2 you play as the hunter, and I guess it says a lot.

    • It is pretty fascinating. I loved just about everything about this game. My cons/issues are more on the technical side, and I didn't like a large part of the City levels. Just about everything else I was enjoying. The mood and atmosphere, the enemy designs, I loved how the game restricts you but doesn't make you fully helpless. It is what it is, but I feel she was way too critical and had unrealistic expectations and too caught up in the hype. Was weird how she complained about Horror games not allowing you to fight back, and wants a return to Survival Horror and we mostly get that in Evil Within aaaand she doesn't like it? Eh *slow shrug*.

I love games like the RE2 remake where you have free rein to explore, but you really have to think about how to spend your resources as you solve puzzles. I like when games expect you to think and explore but subtly nudge you in the right direction with expert game design. Games that are too linear leave me feeling bored right along with most open world games that lack proper pacing and level design, it's a delicate balance.

As a kid in high school, the evil within felt like I was finally getting to partake in that tradition. Other games and older ones have obviously come to outclass it, but I’ll always look back on those memories of it fondly because it was my own resident evil that I didn’t have to watch over my brothers’ shoulder.

I do own quite a few because there are things I REALLY like in those games and still enjoy them, but I def prefer Survival Horror that allows you fleeting moments of safety & power but that at a moment's notice you could lose all of it. Evil Within is a favorite of mine, there's just some really great moments of atmosphere, tension, a intriguing & semi confusing story to glow through and imo, a great voice acting job from Anson Mount as Sebastian Castellanos. • And, the big reveal to the mystery as one goes along, is that all the twisted imagery and stuff going on that seems supernatural is actually sci-fi based horror via technology of the STEM device, a matrix like artificial world comprised of many people's memories and nightmares - People that are controlled by one "master mind" whether for good or bad aka Ruvik. TEW has a really wild world premise, that basically gave fans of Resident Evil and Silent Hill series a mixed dose of psychological/supernatural/body horror all under the sci-fi based umbrella. A quick dip into your channel brought me here - in anticipation of the Steam Deck arriving I picked up The Evil Within along with all three DLC packs for around a fiver, and it's next on my list to play - so part of me wants to watch the whole of this video, while another part wants to at least start playing the game first 🙂 I played Evil Within 2 through on Xbox One a while back and loved it, but never played the first one. I always ALWAYS had ammo on me no matter what and the game does reward you if you play smart ie, throwing bottles at enemies heads to stun them for a insta kill, stealth killing enemies, light a good match to kill a group of enemies, all of those conserve ammo and can reward more ammo if you are low. You will always have enough ammo to get past a section in the game. Hell I felt as if I had too much ammo to spare at some points because of how many things I did to minamize ammo consumption using the actions as I stated above and I played through the game multiple times on hard and akuma. • Yeah to me it felt like it was an interesting system because you start off really limited in what you can carry and have to work to conserve your ammo but then you find out that if you invest some green gel you can increase your carrying capacity but at the cost of not being able to get other vital upgrades like sprint out time, syringe recovery, guns & crossbow etc. for more time it creates such interesting decisions when I played. I found I was pretty good at managing my ammo by using stealth and fire or crossbow combos in combat as often as I could, so I opted to not upgrade the carrying capacity as much instead getting sprint time so I can better outrun or escape and hide from enemies, syringe recovery, and upgrading my weapons. When the game started to get more difficult in it's encounters later on I shifted my priorities to being able to carry some more ammo because to max out the sprint time to 10s and get the increased stamina recovery buff it was SO MUCH green gel that I decided not to and leave my sprint time at 8s cause it felt good enough. All these decisions you make ultimately cost you the green gel you get from exploring the environment or killing enemies the stronger the enemy the more gel you get but that will use up your resources to kill it.... everything ties together so seamlessly all the mechanics in this matter everything you do adds up to make an awesome truly survival focused experience.

  • Fun video like usual, but I've got a question for you- in your mind what counts as survival horror? Because this kind of just reminds me of another Avalanche Reviews case of "I have a VERY specific list of qualifiers for what makes something survival horror". TEW1 requires more resource management and mechanical mastery than most other games in the genre (Resident Evil and Silent Hill included), especially the higher difficulties. Pair that up with the general aesthetic and atmosphere and you have a better survival horror experience than most (again, especially on higher difficulties). The high concentration of combat doesn't really change any of that. The story is also inherently psychological in nature and easily digestible by time you beat the game, so I don't see the problem here either. But yeah, honestly this just sounds like the game isn't for you more than it not being survival horror.

    • My opinion is this: Survival Horror isn't a genre, it's a capcom marketing tool. I consider even the classic RE games to be action horror games. Even the newer fps ones, which take control away from the player far too often thereby negating one of the greatest strengths of being first person, have tried to entice the people back to RE who shunned it as being tooactiony with the words survival horror. Survival Horror is just a nonsense term they slapped on the back of the box, not a design ethos.

      @AngryCosmonaut@AngryCosmonaut Жыл бұрын
    • For it to be survival horror the player must be rewarded for avoiding combat and punished for engaging in it, for example RE4 is not survival horror because of the item drops, RE7 has no item drops so engaging in combat will cost you rather than reward you, also there must not be any areas where all enemies must be killed in order to clear the level other than boss fights of course, avoiding combat must always be an option, that's my honest opinion on the most important factor in defining something as survival horror

I didn't really master the mechanics until my second playthrough but it has a lot of depth and combat is really satisfying. The sequel has more polish but felt really watered down and generic in comparison. Like a PG-13 followup to an R-rated cult classic. This was the first game that made me want an Xbox One (then Bloodborne came out and that decided what console I'd be on mainly) I was shopping at Walmart and saw this was on the Xbox 360. Bought it right there and played it lord knows how many times. Bought it again down the road for PS4, same thing, numerous playthroughs. I still play this today from time to time. It's dated, but it's a timeless masterpiece that will always have a place in my heart. This game was amazing in it's day.

  • Evil Within 1 was an underrated masterpiece, it was far superior to the 2nd game. I even think Mikami did a better job in this game than RE4. The settings, story and atmosphere was great and we could feel the dev team put a lot of love and effort into the game. The gameplay was hard but very addicting and satisfying. It felt like a true survival horror because the game was really horrifying and thrilling from start to finish. The Kidman DLCs were even better, the narrative design was def the best in the series and it was refreshing to experience the game from her perspective. They set really cool and interesting concept in TEW1 and its DLCs. When they announced the sequel I was really excited. But sadly, the 2nd one was meh, it felt like they just tried to make money, by making the game a lot easier than the first game. The gameplay was fun at least but it wasn’t deep as the first game, the story wasn’t really a continuation of the first one which was really disappointing, the environment and enemy designs lacked variety and the voice acting was meh. Also the game was very short, despite having a bigger map than the first game. I was so disappointed with the second game, I kind of expected The Evil Within 2 to become like Gravity Rush 2, which was a really really good sequel that improved upon the first game and wrapped up every loose end, but TEW2 wasn’t like that, it just felt like a completely different game from the first game, in a bad way.

    @kitten7199@kitten71992 жыл бұрын
    • Agreed. Mikami really wanted to capitalize with a survival horror title with Bethesda and he did that with EW. The game has slowly become a classic; people forget that Resident Evil started off like that and slowly became popular. EW1 was definitely amazing in tone and atmosphere and while it can be tedious, it was an amazing experience for me. People praise RE4 so much and forget it too was tedious in parts and also inconsistent with its tone. Just like every game, there are going to be peaks and valleys, considering the length of games has increased.

  • The first Evil Within is so beautifully horrifying and tense, with such an excellent gameplay and cool Inception/Cell like Story, and superb atmosphere, that I actually think is better and scarier than RE4, and far superior to it's own sequel, and while I thought 2 was fun the aim felt way off and sadly it lacked unique new creatures/bosses, back to the first one, if you actually use the agony Crossbow you'll find out that the harpoon bolt turns into a fire bolt at level 5, when it comes to puzzles though yes, that could have been done better, for the rest just use the crossbow people, this game still holds up, one of the best and at this point a horror classic 9/10.

  • Just finished the main story. I enjoyed the game more than you overall, share a lot of the same critiques but didn't mind things like Ruvik in the Mansion. (Mansion was definitely one of the better levels, although Village clearly takes the cake as you say.) It's funny to me that the bottles are made such a big deal in the first level, and then I basically never used them again after that. I found that enemies didn't really go after them for some reason -- it was like the noisemakers in Alien: Isolation if the noisemakers didn't work. I was into the story for the most part, but did want Sebastian's backstory to play a bigger role and frankly kept thinking it would. I was waiting for some big twist, like Sebastian is also a patient in the hospital or something like that. Given how the whole conceit is that all the characters are sharing a head-space, it's pretty weird that they didn't have a level at like... the police station or something (very Resident Evil lol). Like you'd think there'd be more levels focused on the central characters and uncovering their secrets. There's a bit of a late-game focus on whether or not you can trust Kidman, imagine having a level diving into her backstory to paint a full confusing picture to explore and complicate that question. Basically I like where they were going but feel there was untapped potential and should probably play those DLCs.

Like, it's apparently was real world when Sebastian and other came to hospital, so all those dead bodies was real, and those cops was actually killed, but i still don't understand how. As i understand, when main heroes was in a car, and they all heard that static noise, it was wireless STEM, and between this and before Ruvik teleported from security footage, it was some kinda process of syncing to STEM, and after it Sebastian and others was officially in dream world. And it's not explain how Ruvik killed those ppl from STEM, and make them bleed and stuff. I guess supposedly they died from heart attack, in Silent Hill style, so they all was connected to steam wirelessly, and Ruvik killed them in steam, and they died in real life, and blood and gore is just, that was still in real world is just a developing error or something.

    @SilentPrayerCG@SilentPrayerCG Жыл бұрын
  • The reason Ruvik didn’t use Sebastian’s trauma against him like he did Kidman was because Sebastian wasn’t Ruvik’s primary target. Kidman was. Kidman was the biggest threat to Ruvik due to her ‘assignment’ in the Stemworld so Ruvik threw all his resources at her. The reason why Sebastian got as far as he did was because he was just brushed aside. I remember Ruvik even telling Sebastian that he didn’t really want to kill Sebastian (since he was a bystander in what was going on between Ruvik and Kidman) but Ruvik said if he has to he would.
