  • Brings back old memories to me….. My Dad, God bless him, was a mechanic, old school, didn’t have his own shop, more like a “mobile” mechanic. But most the time he would work around our home. I still remember all these acts working on valves and all kind of mechanic work, anything in a car, from A to Z. He didn’t have laths or other machining devices, just the basic tools, his strength and his brain (not particularly in that order). He always repeated that tools are the most important, they work for you. It’s like a gift from heaven to get a new tool, particularly the specialized ones. He grew up orphan and illiterate. I was helping him after school, weekend and summer holidays. And I would read for him automotive repair guides for some newer car models. Then to make things easy for him he would ask me to write down a single letter for some parts and put next to it the value for the torquing amount needed. Mainly for Pistons and 3 or 4 other majors parts. I know some people will criticize about the environmental and safety parts of this video but it is what it is and these guys are gaining honest income. Cleaning was with “petrol” then for some parts with “diesel” followed with water jetting, it helps a quicker drying and I’m guessing it’s like using a surfactant and repelling water. Thank you for sharing this.

For starters, using a steel brush at high revolutions to clean intake and exhaust valves along with the mating surface. Just a dang shame. They are probably thinking, "Oh, but hey! Look how clean it is"!😂 Still, it is fun to watch. 😊

Pressurize the cylinder you’re working on with an adapter from your compression gauge hooked up to shop air to keep the valves closed , then hold the socket on the top of the spring then smack it with the hammer , the grease catches the keepers lol

  • These videos are nostalgic and fascinating to me. There is a certain kind of zen to doing this work. I used to work in my dad's machine shop and this is how we would do it. All of his equipment was older stuff, he ran the shop from 1985 to 2015. With all of the heads I've taken apart, I never saw the valve seats get pulled and replaced. I was scratching my head when I saw them do that. We also had a bench for cutting the valve seats and never did the lapping process seen here with the paste. Also had a big acid cooker and would throw the parts in for a few minutes to get them degreased and cleaner to avoid the manual scrubbing seen here.

    @janner2121@janner2121 Жыл бұрын
  • I'd like the videos with the boys helping out. It reminds me on when I was their age and worked with my father and my uncles and cousins. They were in the construction business and every weekend all the boys had to go with her father and part of the summer we would have to help out. These boys are learning a very good skill. I don't care if you have $1,000 car or truck or a million dollar car or truck. They all have one thing in common and that is they have cylinder heads. I know some people on here have negative things to say about the young kids. People are even saying they are forced to do this work. I have never seen it in any other videos I always saw the boys smiling and laughing. And one video they were racing each other one who could get their cylinder head done first. As always I enjoyed this video and of course I gave it a big old thumbs up. You can only subscribe once and that has been taken care of at the beginning of your series. I love watching just kind of work. I think if I was a young man again I believe I would work in a machine shop. I love all the different machines and what they do. I look forward to the next video. I hope everyone has a very Happy New Year.

    • A small industrial application ultrasonic cleaning bath with water and appropriate soap is what is usually used for this kind of work, after a blast from high pressure pressure wash with solvents and water. High pressure here means that it's safe operation requires a safety box and iron reinforced rubber gloves. Reconditioned tractor turbos caked in horse excrement and other fun stuff like tuning them up during the summer. Works a charm. Barring access to that, yeah, mechanical abrasion with appropriate tool tip / pad as you recommended. I can see the aversion to use of chemicals as their safe disposal and handling is difficult in the kinds of environment these guys are working in. Would advise at least nitrile gloves from some cheap chinese outlet for the lads rubbing the metal flakes out with it by hand. Thicker rubber ones for the dude degreasing the springs in the acid bath. They're not single use and couple of bucks to future digital functioanlity is a cheap medical insurance. They're also performing a lot of precision work they should have a drill press for, which they certainly could have access to by the looks of the planing machine, with out any guides, I know it's make do and mend out there, but this hurts my mechanical engineering student soul. I know hand lapping valves is a thing but seriously, this ain't no dragster head its going to a working machine that needs to last. That being said they're clearly skilled craftsmen and their method works. Same cannot be said of certain "craftsmen" of an American distiction. With none of the resource impoverishment that can occur in their area: kzhead.info/sun/ZNKKqqp_nGOvgKM/bejne.html
