Secret Hollywood Rituals, Shane Gillis & Toxic Masculinity - Mark Normand

Mark Normand is a podcaster, actor and a comedian.
Is Hollywood a secret cabal of child-eating sorcerers? It might be. Mark has spent enough time in its orbit to know. And if nothing else he can riff on some good theories for 2 hours with me.
Expect to learn what Mark thinks of the downfall of NYC and Bail reform, why the resurgence of Shane Gillis on SNL might not be the death rattle for woke culture, how Mark remains positive in the middle of negativity, if he's worried about being deplatformed, his thoughts on what is considered offensive in Hollywood, the one word you can never say to an American and much more...

  • As a black man the race issue is way over played. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s non existent but it’s definitely not as prevalent as people try and make it seem. I feel like it derives from people at the top(mainly leftist) who have something to gain by keeping blacks and whites divided. If this illusion of the racist white man oppressing the minorities goes away then theres very little reason to continue to vote for the left. Their whole platform is identity politics and division, that’s how they maintain their seats in office at all levels.

    • Don’t negate all the money that can be made by pushing the identities. We have come a long way from the grifting of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. BLM got over 90 million…how many million went to the DNC? Think of all the money that fuels gender studies, African American studies, now you have DEI administrators, or whole departments….its an industry. And as Thomas Sowell points out….it will never be in their interest to say, things have come a long way, minorities, women, etc are accomplishing xyz, doing well, etc, etc. Think now of the billions trans, lgbt identities brings in. When you start going after a kid painting his face for a sport team, or men sitting with their legs too far apart as toxic male behavior….I would say, you are really running out of things to complain about and fight for. But it will never be in their interest to say we can ease up on the oppression rhetoric. We can take a victory lap and be proud things have gotten so much better. And with the election this year, it will only get worse.

  • Growing up Mormon I can tell you soaking is more of a trendy thing to talk about than a thing that actually happens. Someone HAS so have done it but it is VERY against mormon doctrines and culture. The culture in Utah can be a bit much so people on the fringes of church membership might rebel in that way though. Polygamy did happen at the beginning of the church essentially until the US government forced them to stop. If it became legalized today Mormons might continue the practice but a lot of the membership is so used to monogamy that it would be a major cultural shift.

    @brendenfullmer5573@brendenfullmer5573Ай бұрын
    • They also practiced polygamy for pragmatic reasons and not every male did so. Mormons were systematically hunted for years which killed off a lot of their numbers. Polygamy allowed for quicker repopulation. It also offered protection to widows and orphans. And if that makes some people outraged, I'd also like to remind everyone that polygamy does not automatically imply sexual relations. It is defined as having multiple spouses. In certain situations, such as when widows or orphans needed support, polygamous arrangements might be made primarily for caregiving and support reasons rather than for romantic or sexual purposes. Once it was outlawed, the practice stopped.

    • Yeah but the Mormons that practiced polygamy really had to be talked into it. They came from a mostly strong protestant background. It was a rumor to most of them for a long time because Joseph and a select few who practiced it kept it a secret for a while. I think your comment is right but you make it sound like polygamy was a logical way to repopulate when in reality the only reason it started is because Joseph Smith was commanded by God to start it. Otherwise, no matter how massacred early Mormons were they wouldn't have strayed from monogamy because of their strong Christian/Victorian cultural context. My only other gripe with your comment is that the revelation to begin polygamy explicitly states the purpose is to raise more children. While some were just marriages in Heaven and not on earth, perhaps others were 'on-earth' but non-sexual, but for the most part the purpose was to create children.@@TheSwauzz

      @brendenfullmer5573@brendenfullmer5573Ай бұрын
    • In any case, soaking, polygamy, etc., are very much against church doctrine, as enforced. People aren't perfect and in every situation people will try to cross the lines to justify their behavior. There's nothing unique to LDS people about that.

You have to be confident 100% in what you say and how you feel. You cannot be unsure about statements like that. If you truly believe you will not flinch.

  • I asked AI about "uh," "um," and "like and it said, "Language evolves over time in response to various influences." I asked, "If that's true, then why don't YOU use those words?" to which it replied, "The primary goal of these language models is to generate coherent and contextually relevant text". In other words, the real reason why AI doesn't use "uh," "um," and "like" is because people who use those words sound incoherent and contextually irrelevant. That was a fascinating talking point that you guys brought up! My background is as a Child & Family Therapist for At-Risk Youth and I've always had a fascination about why we do what we do, along with the etymology of words and idiomatic expressions. , Thank you, Chris and Mark!

    • @@davidjones8043 technically, they're both. For those curious, verbal disfluencies are a broader category of interruptions or irregularities in speech, including stuttering, repetitions, and corrections. Filler words, often referred to as "filled pauses" or "filled disfluencies, are typically used when a speaker is pausing to gather their thoughts or to signal to listeners that they are not finished speaking but need a moment to formulate their next words.

  • 0:50 Mark Norman is a savant. You could see his brain working out that Malcolm X joke after Chris made the casual "blitter" joke while he was also thinking about Chris' question, and then, even though he could've just continued with the conversation, he was compelled by whatever engine of autistic brilliance that drives him, to quickly drop that quick quip as though he wouldn't have been able to continue if he didn't, which he probably wouldn't have. This man is a mad genius

  • Jon Stewart returning to the Daily Show might be one of the most important cultural events of this decade. It is is immediately apparent to almost any viewer what has been missing for the last decade or so in in satire and political commentary. Not only does he go after both sides, but he goes after the JOKES. He goes where the comedy is. It's supposed to be funny, and that man knows what is funny. It feels so good to laugh at ourselves. It's cathartic. It reminds us that we can weather the storm, and that we all have a lot in common.

    • A cultural event? For real? He’s only on 1 night a week. He’s already been exposed as a hypocrite . He’s not nearly as funny as he was. That guy on Fox crushed him in viewers. And Stewart is on multiple channels . Not close to a cultural event of the decade. He can’t even beat fox.

  • The story behind unwanted emigration into New York and other major cities is interesting. Instead of paying cartels thousand of dollars only have to hike across desert for days. Along with possibly being shot, used as a mule, or trafficked. Pay a few hundred dollars in Mexico City for a plane ticket to Canada skip across a basically open border & be in New York in a few hours. It is rather entertaining that all the cities that signaled their virtue are proving to be rather unreliable.

    • Most huge cities like New York, London and Paris are pretty dependent on tourism. Sure they would still be great places without it but they would be billions and billions and BILLIONS of dollars less well of every year without it. They need that extra money to keep growing if you were to take that money away the cities would decline in lots of different ways and tons of people would lose jobs as well. So while technically they don’t need tourism they wouldn’t be the cities they are without it.
