He is incorrect on the mpg btw. The 20 combined mpg is for the twin turbo v6. The hybrid numbers are not yet released
I have to say Toyota is doing a really good job in the design department these days 👍🏼
The new Sequoia is so nice
Yeah they are in survival mode
Great work on this video, MotoMan! Greatly appreciated.
Great review, I was really looking forward for this!
Excellent review loving the detailed review you be giving off
Glad you liked it
Nice to see the layout, good stuffs
You are the Anthony Bourdain of cars. I enjoy this.
Toyota design team goal each project: OK, we need to make the new biggest grill of all time.
I’m not a truck guy, but I’m always excited to here about trucks getting suspension upgrades to make them drive more like cars. That hybrid V6 TT is pretty interesting. You’re saying to see it in an IS but if rumors are true some version of this will be seen in a new generation LFA or at the least the LC F that may exist?
maybe not the LC F, but hopefully the next-generation RC F coupe (before they make it electric and go after Genesis' newer EV models)
the rumors were the LC F was gonna get a Twin turbo V8. Unfortunately the rumors are that the LC F is cancelled
I am very much looking forward to seeing the reliability of this powertrain. I'm not too concerned about the hybrid component...Toyota's seem to have that technology nailed down. But say what you will about the old gas-guzzling power-lacking 5.7L i-Force V8... it is as bulletproof indestructible as their old 4.7L (2UZ-FE) engine is/was. As much as I love the Ford Ecoboost V6 engines for power delivery & "decent" fuel economy... they are horribly unreliable by the time you get near 150k miles. I am a service manager at an independent shop and it seems every V6 Ecoboost (2.7L & 3.5L) engine needs new turbos before they hit 50k. Combine that with cam phaser & timing chain issues.... they're a nightmare. I know this engine has been used in a variation for a few years on the new Lexus LS500 and I haven't heard or seen any common issues yet but there's just not enough of them on the road with high enough mileages to get an accurate impression. I hope so though. It's an impressive powertrain w/ great potential to be used in many other applications in various forms & iterations. Great review MotoMan! Always watch your reviews and appreciate your thoroughness & insight.
And That Sir. Is why I am on my 2nd Tundra with an I-Force V8. I Had the 1st ten years. Current Tundra is a 1794. The new twin turbo is tempting, however, as I work in quality and engineering at a tier one I well know how 1st year production vehicles go. To your point I’ll drive my 1794 3-5 years more and see how the new generation holds up. Nice input from a service guy. Thanks
@@rockybass9764 I generally agree with you on 1st year production vehicles. However, I find Toyota to be the exception to this rule. I purchased an FJ cruiser in 2008, 1st year production. It still runs flawlessly even at 300k miles
@@theo8326 I'm not sure how practically true that getting a 1st year production vehicle is getting into big $ repair bills. I owned two first year production BMW, and when I took the delivery of my current 2017 BMW 530i xdrive, I was warned that the wheels were gonna fall off after warranty because it's 1st year production. 5 years later - 0 issues. But I'm getting the new hybrid tundra. Looks like the perfect vehicle for a growing family.
In love with my creation, dreams do come true!
These 3.5 V6 engines have been in Lexus cars for ages. They are tried and tested. The hybrid system is almost across their entire range.. I'd go Hybrid 1794 because I like the cowboy interior
Great powertrain and chassis.
Who knows? It'll be recalled enough just like the Prius?
the Lexus GX could benefit from a powerplant like that - love the current V8, but the MPG rating is a hard pill to swallow.
Lol check the back seat space of the double cab but also slide the driver/passenger seats all the way back for the video.
The new for Toyota Hybrid system may just be the shape of things to come for both brands ( Toyota/Lexus).
What a wonderful package.
I feel like the front windshield has little outer visibility it looks like you sit high
Very good pick up from toyota.
I love this pretty monster 👹.
It will be interesting to see how well the powertrain technology holds up long term. It seems like a lot of complication for a vehicle that is (typically) expected to work hard and last for many years. I'm sure it will be great for people that trade in their vehicles by the time the warranty runs out.
unlimited years depending on the rust. 20-25 years/250k miles for the battery. Same battery tech is used 15+ yrs ago. This new way of hybrid is also on the LC500. Pretty cool, I hope to see it in the LX landcruiser.
There are a ton of first gen camry hybrids as taxis on the road, considering that's over a decade's technology and taxis drive all day, I think it's safe to say it'll be reliable.
Almost all these trucks are used by soccer dads not at construction sites, so they should last very long pulling an RV or boat, and trips to Home Depot. No hate just how it is. Cheers
the turbo v6 as already been used in the Lexus LS for many years. And I'm sure toyota abused the powertrain in testing since they put it into their new land cruiser as well. not to mention toyota has lots of experience abusing hybrid motors in racing as well. Since 2016 their Le Mans racecars have been V6 turbo hybrids
Commercial trucks have more heavy duty turbo chargers that go over 300k miles. The tundra is in that category. However, the hybrid is the big question ❓ mark.
V8 with hybrid motor (like the Germans did in their large-spec sedans & SUVs).....that was in the later year Toyota Century. Really rare sedan, that one. Wished it was accessible in the Lexus LS 500h, but we aren't on the board of directors, so yea. Also, the new LX was just announced on the 13th, and they didn't specify the output for the F Sport, which has one wondering if it will have the hybrid motor same as the TRD Pro to assist with quick sprints to the latest upscale restaurants etc.
Toyota made an LS600h and LS600hl for a while. That thing was awesome.
"recreational vehicle" then they only put 400w inverter when Toyota's own Sienna and Rav4 have 1500w inverters...
Wow their less powerful hybrids have more electrical power, wow Toyota.
8:05 it is a preproduction model..
The transmission is the most unique one in the history of automotive industry. Its a parallel hybrid - but not a CVT. Since the EVs are on the rise , it may not see much adaptation, and even for Toyota may not adapt into its own fleet for long. Perhaps will hold its value just as collectors item.
@blacknester i dont know what u mean by eCVT. But prius transaxle does have Belt. which again is shared with almost most of their hybrid trasaxles including larger ones like Rav4, highlander and sienna hybrids. The power split u mentioned is used in larger lexus models like 350h,450h and the LC500h. They also call these ones as multistage hybrid transmission.
Rumor has it the upcoming Lexus LX600h will have the same hybrid propulsion system as an optional alternative to the standard V8, we'll find out tomorrow. I wont be surprised if it showed up in the Land Cruiser in a year or two as well, they share the engine and platform after all. But I digress, imho the double cab Tundra should've had suicide doors.
COMPLETELY agree about the rear doors.
3:30 was that a full 1 second delay in throttle response, on a flat road?
Cool red interior but super basic screen setup/ center console
This is not the first application of this type of hybrid system in the Toyota universe. They have the commercial *Hino* truck which this type of hybrid has been in application since the 90s. Toyota is the parent company of Hino. Toyota has not provided the *mpg* on the hybrid models. The 20 combined mpg is for the gas models and not the hybrid.
I would love to see a similar hybrid engine system in a 4Runner. 😍
Now with the fuel economy numbers out this really doesn't look like Toyota's best hybrid.
Looks like Toyota needs to improve that throttle response time, so much delay!
I was hoping the hybrid makes it to the lx600? So far no news of that
The LX is a Land Cruiser and Toyota won't put a hybrid in a Land Cruiser.
13.9 in front rotors and 6,200 lbs empty?! Geezus the Sonata N Line has 13.6.
I'm a Toyota guy, but I have to say that I really hate that grille. It's just too large. Wish list: the 300 series Land Cruiser with the hybrid 3.5. I would be at the dealer trading in my 2013 Land Cruiser tomorrow. As much as I love the 5.7l V8 in my Land Cruiser, I don't like the 12.5 mpg I get in the city. Yes, I can afford the gas, but I'd much rather be getting a combined fuel economy closer to 20 mpg than my current combined 14.5 mpg.
A big step for Toyota to ditch their famous V-8. It wasn't too many years back I remember a Popular Mechanics article about Toyota buying back a one-owner Tundra from the original owner that went a million miles. Toyota then took the motor apart and found all moving parts remained in spec. That was monumental, if recollection serves, no manufacturer had ever achieved such a feat - or maybe even never attempted. Obviously there is a lot riding on this new power plant. As in most mechanical, and now hy-brid electric things, time will tell. Even unproven as of yet I would pick this over a Ford Lightning which if the Hoovies Garage channel is any indication is not a good towing vehicle due to excess battery consumption.
Only 20 mpg is an improvement over outgoing model....
Right I hope that's a mistake. I thought that was the mpg of the non hybrid
@@travisstrickland7270 "...Chevrolet Silverado1500 Hybrid is the only hybrid in the full-size truck segment. They have not released the Hybrid MPG specs
He misspoke. Those are the non hybrid numbers.
@@roque-au-parcus non-hybrid Big 3 are 22-24 mpg. Then there is their diesel option which is in the 30's. Toyota is sucking more than gas!
I would like a bigger battery. And not in the cab. Ever put out a battery fire? All that bed could hold the biggest battery somewhere. Just think fort knox toyota.
3:58 sorry wrong statement, the eCVT is a bullet proof design and what allows hybrids to get the gas mileage they do. This type of transmission is more durable than any other automatic transmission. I think automotive journalists like yourself need to research the cars your review thoroughly to better understand the technology behind them.
Correct because it is an eCVT in name only, as you are likely aware.
Toyota ..electric tundra please.
Never complain about the size of BMW grills again.
👌👍👏🇨🇦💪🔥
Glove box area is a waste of space with that big o toyota logo
I want the v8 on the Lexus and TRD Pro with a v8
If the TRD Pro doesn't average a combined 28 mpg minimum, it's a major fail in my opinion. This is coming from someone who drives a 2008 Tundra that averages 15 mpg.
There’s no way it will come remotely close to that. Try MAYBE 22mpg MAX - my 2019 RAM loaded Laramie 1500 with ORG gets 22-24 mpg V8 if I keep it at 65mph - if you get 15mpg in your Tundra, try putting it in 4wd and it will drop to 10-12mpg
@@jjames2162 My point is that we are in the year 2021 and these companies have yet to come up with a better engine that will give us better gas mileage? That is a major fail. Put the money into R&D.
@@deandeleo6084 I agree 1000% it’s pathetic - blame republicans
@@jjames2162 It can be done but legacy automakers choose not to. Case in point--Tesla.
So many entitled and greedy people these days. Something that makes this much power- 437 hp and 583 ft lbs of torque and you’re expecting it to get almost double of you’re existing MPG average!? You people crack me up 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️If the power figures were similar to the V8, then yes, 26-30mpg would be expected. You’re getting a beast of a power train that is significantly more powerful than the outgoing V8 and will STILL have an improved MPG rating. Can’t have your cake and eat it too. What do you want, power or mpg’s. It’s a TRUCK for gods sakes. I’ll take the power. If you’re so concerned about MPGs maybe you shouldnt be looking at such a high performance truck, or trucks in general. Maybe the 4cylinder 2.7L eco boost from Ford is more up your alley, which is a piece of crap. Or a Prius or EV. We’re talking about a gas motor here…comparing to electrics is completely different.
After decades of refinement a cabin (heater) battery pack that delivers so little is a bit disappointing. A V6 that needs 4 square feet of grill is style over function that needs to quit looking a German trends. 🤦🏻♂️
Fake news. 20mpg is the none hybrid
Not fake, just all that was provided by Toyota at the time of shooting.
@@MotoManTV Yes, but that was for the non-hybrid V6. There has been zero mpg information released by anybody for the hybrid. I think it might be a good idea to clarify that for the viewers.

90,000 to 125,000 miles and you’ll be buying a battery….. just after most people pay off their truck
It’s a 1.87 kWh battery. That’s pathetic. Doesn’t even qualify for the rebate from Biden’s massive spending bill. Toyota is really dropping the ball. BEV trucks will eat Toyota’s market share.
Let’s go Brandon
TOYOTA has made a VERY BIG MISTAKE ( and I am a 100% Toyota loyalist ! ) The 2022 Tundra has an "active air dam " underneath , up front. At high speed, it deploys to direct air to the sides. At low speed, it folds up to restore full ground clearance. This "active air dam" PREVENTS Tundras from having FRONT TOW HOOKS which to work properly must be attached to the frame . An off-road vehicle without tow hooks ???? You will not be pulling your buddy out of a snow bank or no one is going to be pulling you out of a mud bog . Tow Hooks are essential for every off-roader . Huge Oversight by Toyota !
I haven’t seen the air dam on the TRD Pro, nor heard any info about which trims include it. I’m sure you’ll be able to get a trim that works.
How often are you getting stuck? I have a TRD off-road Tacoma on stock wheels, tires and suspension and it can do 90% of the trails here in Colorados Rocky Mountains.yes getting stuck happens occasionally in extreme circumstances like deep mud or deep snowpack but I find it to be pretty rare. Aftermarket bumpers and winches get most of my buddies out that do get stuck. So I’m not freaking out about the tow hooks. The other positives of this truck outweigh that in my opinion
@@jmanlevan personally ; I have been driving on public roads for 50 years , never once in my life had a flat ; yet I would never drive around without a jack and spare tire.
@@uconnapharm if you don't know how to pull a stuck vehicle out without tow hooks then you are not a offroad but a troll. All my offroad vehicles use aftermarket shackles not those gay ass factory hooks. I've pulled out my motorhome without hooks several times that no factory hook would do the job. Get a life
Has to be the ugliest truck I’ve ever seen
Toyota they Kinda screwed up with the new tundra :( With a new design the front is ugly the back it’s ugly headlights are ugly :( what ugly bumpers :( mirrors are old school ugly to :( I don’t know how much it’s gonna cost you when all this goes down twin or 2 turbos, hybrid generator and battery 🔋 :( Will cost you $-25-35k to replace every 10 years or sooner :( Plus the quality is not anymore and Toyota has issues consuming the tires to fast All Toyota platforms 25-35k miles:( And the interior it’s not wow ugly GPS screen :( Maybe they should start a 15 more years
Jesus Christ...that thing is ugly! Hard pass on this one.
Go get your eyes checked... this thing is a beast
Go see a doctor you must have defective eyes
You’re obviously not a truck person, a real truck owner don’t care for the looks only it’s capability and dependability
