  • I love the fact that Batman is created by the Jokers first real joke namely killing his parents. This is revealed in the scene previously were he tells a knock knock joke. He isn't the person holding the gun in this movie but he is the reason behind it happening. From the Jokers point of view it is justice for abandoning him as a child as he is convinced he is the true son of the Wayne family and that the joker just as easily could have been batman which I am sure he finds terribly funny. Powerful stuff as you can hear his desperate laughing trying to understand if he is in fact crying or laughing at that very moment.

Personally I connect deeply with this scene a lot, feeling betrayed and judged by others for a long time. To see a scene like this in cinema is like a rude awakening, even though none of us will become what the joker became, it’s nice to see him finally get what he wanted, acceptance from the society that abandoned him.

  • What I love about this scene is that without any words it explains the relationship between the Joker and his thugs. They're his fans. They get the joke. Arthurs "comdey" speaks to their anger and frustration. They also felt abandoned by society and look down on by the ruling elite class. So jokers humor connects with them, making them feel less alone. Which allows them to unleash their built up rage against a world that has never cared for them. They fall in line with his ideology which gives them a sense of purpose and become radicalized. In return Arthur finally gets what he has always wanted: an audience that loves him. You can see he's holding back from getting emotional but he embraces his new act and turns to the crowd like he's on stage about to perform. At last he's finally found people who think he's smart, revolutionary and funny. In a twisted way he achieved his dream of becoming a comedian with a loyal fandom.

  • This scene is by far my most favorite scene. The colors, lighting, theatrics, it all flowed perfectly and Joaquin Phoenix couldn't have been outmatched by anyone to perform this scene. Not only did he strike well similarity with the character, his acting was just so up to par with someone that is mentally ill struggling to gain sympathy from society and just becoming unhinged from all of the despair and trauma he endured. He finally felt like he was getting recognized and listened to, and you could just FEEL THAT while watching it. This scene to me should be a Hallmark of what acting and theatrics should be.

    • @@complte6440 Keep in mind the very last scene where Arthur's in a mental hospital; in an interview, the director claims that this laugh is the only real, genuine laugh the Joker gives out during the entire movie. I think most of us know that the Joker creates numerous past experiences in his head to imagine and sees them as jokes (In the dark knight, Joker had a new story every time he wanted to let someone know how he got his scars), and DC themselves have never confirmed a true origin story for the joker. Basically: We don't know how Joker really became Joker because Arthur's stories that he's lived in his head all seem like realities that he's gone through, so if the real Joker doesn't know how he became himself, how could anyone (including the audience)? So the director confirming that his only real laugh (I interpret it as 'real' meaning the only laugh that really occurred, NOT the only laugh that was 'genuinely funny' to Arthur) suggests that this entire movie may have just been another past life experience the Joker's tragic mind has created in his head. This is my theory and tbh the only hole I can find with it is that we see the Waynes' deaths, which Joker did not witness indicating that these events may have actually happened; However I think Joker witnessed everything we've seen (the audience + in a third-person manner) because he wants to create a perfect reality in his head. This may seem far-fetched and tbh this is the first time I've ever theorized about something so hopefully, maybe someone else has a better interpretation to this 'hole'. But I'd love for you all to let me know what you guys think! (Sorry again I'm not rly good at making these haha)

  • What a powerfully nihilistic scene this is, the music makes you feel the pain, the tragedy that was his life, and the appreciation at last that he receives in the chaos. A passerby might see a crazy person dressed up as a clown but we see his pain, the long journey and descent to madness all in his eyes as he realises he’s finally appreciated as he completes the archetypal costume with the smile. The whole movie he kept trying to smile but something was amiss, he knew it wasn’t right because he was faking it. After realising the truth, about his past, and the truth of the darkness in the world, he could finally see how ridiculous it all was, and decides to finally genuinely smile because he finally gets the “joke”. He’s the symbol that directly represents that ridiculousness, and pointlessness of everything. They cheer for him but the music is dark and tragic, and he finally accepts his role in society as the chaotic nihilist outsider that ridicules and torments those that oppressed him and others like him in a system that favours tormentation. He was playing the game wrong and trying to fit in incorrectly, and now here he is, fully realised, a dark reflection of the society that bore him.

Then as soon as he starts to cause chaos and murder and has gone full psychopath, he is noticed.
