  • Let’s be real, the rich people won’t even sweat it if the toll was $150. The change would just disproportionately affect less wealthy drivers. Unless NYC improves public transit + sets daily road vehicle quotas, the congestion issue isn’t likely to improve or disappear. 🤨

      @middle_of_the_road@middle_of_the_roadАй бұрын
    • 1) If you’re talking about millionaires, then yeah, they won’t care about the fee whether $15, $150, or maybe even $300. Billionaires probably spend even more on their cars, but there are a *lot* more non-millionaires in nyc who wouldn’t want to pay your $150 ($37,000/yr by workdays) and still some who won’t want to pay the $15. 2) The system of funding infrastructure by registration fees, gas taxes, and sales tax, already disproportionately affects low-income drivers. The program nyc is implementing specifically offers discounts to low-income drivers (about 25% discount on average for daily commuters), so it is already better than the current system (where transit riders subsidize the drivers) in funding for infrastructure for income-equity. The program will also be using its revenue to improve the transit system (the funds will be used for capital improvements and not to cover operating costs), which low-income people are more likely to benefit from. 3) Improving public transit is very much a goal of the program. Also wdym by “road vehicle quota”? MTA has bus schedules for every bus line, is that not a quota? 4) It’s estimated that the program will cause 17% fewer vehicles to enter the Central Business district and 9% fewer miles driven in there. It’s also expected to reduce congestion outside the area with less commutes (although not by much).

We've protested this vehemently because this disproportonately impacts lower income people and those who don't have access to train or bus lines. The rich can afford it and won't care. I'm all for reducing vehicular traffic, improving air quality, and the like, but the city has to provide affordable alternatives for people to get to work or they'll only succeeed in angering citizens.
