    • I find it kind of inspiring, imagine if they did this for every US citizen getting released from prison. Reassuring them that no matter how harsh their crime, no matter how harsh the punishment they received for it, their Senators still see them as true American citizens and part of the Nation. That this can really be a new beginning for them. Bonus point: Given the sheer amount of prisoners in the US carceral system, it could possibly be a really taxing obligation for Senators to attend to, giving them some reason to really want to find solutions to the issue. They might even want to make the part about "new beginnings" a reality, imagine that.

    • I'm okay with the idea that everyone gets a second chance. What makes me cringe is that the January 6th riot was directed at the Congressional building and those who work and serve there. So a Senator giving a rioter (even one who's done their time) a flag is like a victim pandering to (not forgiving, which is noble, but pandering) their abuser.

  • I'm living in Brazil. Something extremely similar happened here. The main difference is that almost every single person involved went straight into jail, most of them in the same buses that took them to invade the Congress. People involved in the logistics and finances of that operation are being processed. Former President seems to be heavily involved. America, supposedly the so called Leader of the Free World, still is trying to figure out if they will apply their own laws. This is a precarious situation for your system. No democracy is free to the risk of a dictatorship.
