  • As a current teacher, this is a LOATHSOME trend. How are guns *in school* safer than, I don't know, limiting access to firearms? Schools are not prisoners. Teachers are not prison wardens, nor are we the military. I teach music for crying out loud. If my state tried to issue me a gun, I would refuse, and if they fired me for it, so be it. I will not be party to this insanity.

    • It's not really.a second job. Unless school shootings are a daily occurrence at every single school in the state, most of the time, it just means carrying around an extra accessory to work. Also, it's not mandatory.

    • I'm a teacher in a public school in a rural area where most people own guns (we even have classes in school where students shoot shotguns at clay targets, called trap-shooting), and even I can think of coworkers who shouldn't be armed.

  • I am an armed security guard. In order to get licensed I have to go through 68 hours of use of force and firearms training. I have to pass an accuracy test and a mental evaluation every year to renew my license and complete another 8 hours of firearm range time.

    • Where I live, it takes 18 MONTHS for all that including 24 WEEKS of firearm safety training BEFORE being granted a license for a hand gun in any security position.

  • I'm saying this right now, I am FINE with my taxes paying for gun safety classes and mental health tests. For EVERYONE, NOT JUST TEACHERS. If it stops someone from having a gun who shouldn't, I am HAPPY!! Make this a national law if it means the well regulated part of the second amendment finally gets applied!!

    • It wouldn't be an impeachment, just a vote to remove him from that position. That said, several republicans are going to attempt it. Without democratic support he stands no chance. She is handing back test papers, and he failed and is furious because now he can’t play in the big football game that evening. As she passes him to hand back more test papers, how long do you think it will take before the teacher’s concealed weapon is found and taken away?     • @@tjjames9846 Your little fantasy scenario makes no sense because you misunderstand the law that was passed. It doesn't make it mandatory for all teachers to be armed. It allows those that wish to exercise their 2nd Amendment right to do so. There should be no way any student would know whether any particular teacher is armed as they will be carrying their firearm concealed. Concealed means hidden from sight or secret.

  • My airline ticket was literally just downgraded from business class to premium economy because they changed the plane they are using. I was told I could only request compensation after my flight. I really hope they pass this law requiring refunds around air travel. I saved and bought a business class ticket, not premium economy

    • Better late than never. He was swimming upstream against internal opposition and he started from going the wrong direction to begin with. However, I think many people getting their first gun, or a new type of gun might take interest in a free gun safety course if it included something else. Maybe they could include some free time at a shooting range, shooting lessons, or gun cleaning lessons. Those are just some ideas.

    • ​@@JuanMPalacio All of those things are included in a course to get a permit. It's hardly free though, neither is the paperwork. The wait time for an appointment down here is quite long as well. In hindsight, since we dropped the requirement for a permit I'm guessing it's a lot quicker.

    • I am also from Tennessee. Can't stand Trump and I'm pro Ukraine pro choice. But this one I gotta say I don't have a problem with. I don't think it's a bad idea for some teachers to receive training and be armed in case. I also don't think everyone should be required to take classes because the teachers are. Just saying I complain a whole lot about our politics but I don't see the issue with this one

But the number of people that would be willing to come in and forcibly take it from a teacher and use it against students can't possibly be larger than the number that would just get one from somewhere else. I don't think trying to take one from a teacher would be their first option. So in your example I have to think the benefits would outweigh the potential consequences.

    • Yeah, this topic was handled very poorly. They made it sound like the aid to Ukraine was wrong somehow, but it's old military equipment and a loan to a country whose babies and old people are being shelled and which is making WW3 less probable. Ukraine is a linchpin. If Ukraine falls, there's no guarantee Africa will get its grain, which might mean unrest and hunger (and even more immigrants to the U.S.) There's no guarantee the Middle East will gets its grain, and I don't need to tell you what that means. Russia will have potentially more courage to attack Europe. Europe will be scared and ramping up military production at the expense of other sectors, which means problems for the world economy. China will have more courage to attack Taiwan, which means problems with the microchip market, which basically means the world economy making a nosedive.
