Jon Stewart Calls BS on Trump & the GOP's Performative Patriotism | The Daily Show

2024 ж. 10 Нау.

Jon Stewart unpacks Biden’s fired-up State of the Union and Katie Britt’s disastrous GOP kitchen rebuttal, then calls bulls**t on conservatives branding themselves the party of “true American patriots” and wrapping themselves in the Constitution, while their leader Trump's rhetoric sounds more like an undemocratic king. #DailyShow #JonStewart #Trump

    • @@Duncan_Idaho84 You've no idea who Samuel Johnson was? Well, allow me to educate you. Samuel Johnson (18 September 1709 - 13 December 1784 was an English writer, philosopher, politician, political analyst and commentator. The comment derives from the following: On the evening of 7 April 1775, he made a famous statement: "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."[8] The line was not, as is widely believed, about patriotism in general but rather what Johnson saw as the false use of the term "patriotism" by William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham (the patriot minister) and his supporters. Johnson opposed most "self-professed patriots" in general but valued what he considered "true" patriotism. History is so fascinating and you can learn so much and truly broaden you horizons. Investigate Samuel Johnson, he was an interesting guy. Cheers! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Johnson

There was an immediate rebuttal that patriotism is actually the *first* refuge of the scoundrel, which I tend to agree with personally and is probably closer to what Dylan was getting at, rather than what Johnson intended. The US ranks 5th in world in per student spending, ahead of even most of Europe. The problem is a dysfunctional and wasteful education system, along with a culture that just doesn't place a high value on education (no, just emphasizing getting a degree isn't the same thing). But as is typical of American politics, they want easy solutions to complex problems, which in itself is probably an indictment of the American education system.

And there's more than one 1 thing. If we had ranked/ranged voting instead of first past the post voting in all elections nationwide is another 1 thing that would fix things. That's 2 things. Just do one and the other will follow.
