Spoilers for Devil May Cry 4 and Devil May Cry 5 in the video.
Who knew such a "simple character" could be so complex? Not me actually. Welcome to my longest video ever. I intend to make this a series eventually covering every other playable character in the Devil May Cry series in every game. The next video will be on Dante in DMC1. It will be shorter. Think of this video as introductory, just like how Nero was meant to be. The next one will be shorter. When that video is done it'll be linked here, along with the relevant C&C video.

Of course, thanks for watching. Also thank you for looking at the description. There's no analytics to show how many people read this, but it is nonetheless important to me. And for those of you commenting, thanks for your well wishes and for keeping me honest. I appreciate it.
Finally, cheers to the individual who goes by "Mid". He asked me my opinion on Nero's gameplay and thus put me down this path.

  • GamingBrit put it best when he described nero's devil bringer as a beautiful marriage of gameplay mechanics and contextual spectacle.

  • a small disapointment i have in 5, is that nero kind of geta his human arm back. i liked that he was portraied as an amputee, because it represented people in real life who are amputees and use prostetics. I would have liked if at the end, his arm was like a semi transparent demon arm, like the ones he uses in gameplay as extra hands, because it would have still been visible as some sort of prostetic. but with the human looking hand, we might forget that his arm is actualy missing

  • 21:05 --- Table Hopper to me is nice, because it's either: a) you accidentally get a better dodge roll mid combat or b)you're skilled enough to consistently table hopper. It's only upsides as far as I'm concerned.

  • Dude, this is fantastic! Sometimes, I sit back and put my thoughts on each individual DMC game into a script I'll never be able to make a several hour long video of due to lack of editing software, recording equipment and the like, and this is the kinda stuff I dream of seeing turn out to be the end result. Seriously excited to see the rest of this series play out, as well as that second iceberg! I think Nero's kit, even as far back as DMC4, is the type of character that most action devs would kill to be able to have something on the same level as. I think he's got just enough to keep veteran players at least somewhat interested, given the depth both Exceed and the Bringer add to his greater attack and mobility options, while also giving new players a good crutch to lean on. Learning MAX-Act timings is almost a character in and of itself and is always going to separate the novices from the pros. What you say at 24:09 is definitely an issue; despite action games being primed for replays with higher difficulties, BP modes and the like, DMC4 had the issue of introducing a bit more bloat to the unlockable moves list. Pause combos and enemy step, things that were always part of the base movesets of any character, as well as more multi-tiered moves, Trigger Heart and pointless bloat like Get More Orbs and Speed were abundant, which feels like it was done in part as a reaction to changing DMC3's style system from being EXP based to being upgraded via Proud Souls. My guess is the devs didn't want new players getting too much too quickly. Combined with the dripfeeding of Proud Souls in the vanilla release of DMC4, and it definitely felt like just as annoying a burden as replaying Misison 18 to level up all of Dante's styles in 3. It's also hard to not want a full Yamato moveset at this point in the series. I'll get into the controller issue further down, but maybe they could put his weapon swap on the D-Pad, akin to how DmC did it; up to swap RQ and Y, left or right to swap Devil Breakers. I feel like the Devil Bringer is the single best use of contextual attacks in any action game, especially on bosses. You're rewarded for figuring out their useage yourself in a way that isn't overly cryptic or punishing if you don't (unlike, say, using DT to disspell Doppleganger at the end of the Vergil fight in the reboot), without the need of a QTE prompt when Credo's spear is flying at you, or when Sanctus charges you. There's a lot more I wanna say below about individual topics, so I went through the liberty of timestamping it all. - 0:10 - It's this, and the fact that gameplay mechanics throughout the series are pretty much always universally shared on every enemy and boss (EG, you can jump cancel off of anything with a hitbox, you can royal guard and release any attack, etc; there's never an enemy or attack immune to those rules AFAIK), that make DMC click with me in the best way. Every character's energy and personalities are portrayed perfectly throughout their overall movesets, versus, say, Jeanne being a reskin of Bayonetta. I think the only games that hit that same feel of embodying individual characters like that are No More Heroes 2, for better or worse, and the one man indie-developed Assault Spy. - 4:55 - I don't think I've ever heard of the Order Of The Sword viewing firearms as dishonourable. Was that brought up in the DMC4 files or something? Probably wasn't intentional that The Order have a similar hangup on firearms as Vergil, but it's funny to think about. - 12:55 - I think you're the first person to put this into words, aside from I think TheGamingBritShow in his MGR VS DmC video. Looking at this comment, I'm not even sure I'm wording it right. I think action games that use light-heavy dial-a-combo systems, good as their systems can be, are more often than not hurt by lack of both real distinction between a few of their combos, and the fact we usually have to refer to them as, for example, "Light, Heavy, Heavy, Heavy", rather than "Combo X". - 14:36 - I think the only thing most players would use Hold for is the secret mission that requires you to earn a C ranking in combat without damaging enemies. Even then, I think you can still manage it by well-timed jumps, table hoppers and taunts, but there's probably some insane combo player who used it for something sick. - 16:38 - Actually had a friend of mine play DMC4 earlier in the year, and this happened to them a lot. The amount of times they released the charge shot half a second early and had it completely whiff, despite me insisting it's one of Nero's absolute best damage options, was insane. - 19:31 - Nero's DT activation window also gives Nero I-Frames, which is really fun when something like Berial's giant swings are coming at you. - 21:40 - This actually made me whip out the FuturePress DMC4 Strategy Guide out of curiosity, because I thought I'd seen something like this in there before. Starting on page 94, the game's Combat Points are discussed, with each move of both Nero and Dante being listed. With them are their individual damage values, and the difference in damage of firearms depending on distance from enemies, a base Combat Points value, denoting the default amount of Style generated, the action's Combat Points Timer, denoting the amount of time in frames it would take for the action to lose its style degradation and return to base value, and a self explanatory DT Increase value. So, for example, the first swing of non-Exceeded Red Queen, regardless of the rest of your combo, will do 80 Damage, give 130 Combat Points, take 250 frames, or roughly 4 seconds, to lose style degradation, and give 120 DT increase. While I couldn't find a Combat Points value for jumping to dodge (the closest is Enemy Step, listed at a value of 150), I was able to find that "Tight Evade (>5 Frames - 20 Frames)" and "Table Hopper (>5 and

    • Splitting into a second comment here; KZhead kept returning an error when I tried to post the whole thing, and I'm not about to let the last few details go to waste. -Regarding the general approach to controller remapping, I want to use this time to say how glad I am that DMC, since 3, has allowed fully remappable controls, and in the case of 4 onward, individually remappable controls on a character by character basis. From DMC1 up until now, the best you'll get out of a Kamiya directed title is a few preset options, which was especially annoying in Western PS2 releases of DMC1, where triangle was forced to be the jump button for seemingly no reason. Even DmC, which mostly gives you the option on the surface, had garbage like Gun Special (X+Square/A+X at the same time) and DT (L3+R3 at the same time) be forced onto the player. The ability to just assign every character's DT to Square/X and their gun to L1/RB, like I do with everyone in DMC4 and with Nero and V in DMC5 (Dante and Vergil require holding L1 to fill their SDT meters, so until I get a back-paddled controller or rebind the Steam Deck controls and fight muscle memory to the bitter end, I'm bitching out for now), makes a universe of difference in how effectively you can play them, and there's way more examples that I'm sure every player has been able to use to their advantage. It's such a basic QOL function that I'd expect it to be a standard in literally every game, and I'm glad Itsuno is keeping it alive. -My personal Nero control scheme in 5 is the Bringer on B/O, just like in 4, DT on the D-Pad, Breakers on R2/RT for easier Breakage charging, and Blue Rose on L1/RB because that's just how I did it in DMC4 and it's a habit I don't wanna kick. You're definitely right on Nero not feeling like there's enough buttons on the average controller, for sure. It's something that's been nagging me since I played 5 on release, so maybe back-paddled controllers are gonna be a standard sooner than later for stuff like this. -1:01:44 - If we're talking more about Nero having additional charge shots via DT, while watching a friend of mine playing DmC, I thought it'd be cool to give Nero something akin to Ricochet, the E&I charge shot that bounces between multiple enemies. Maybe that could be a fun way to spice his kit up; one DT rune to get Ricochet, and if you get 3, you can maybe tag it with a Summoned Sword barrage that also bounces between enemies? Just a thought. - 1:04:14 - My only source of this is an image I had to track down through /v/ and isn't even listed on places like TCRF, so take it with a grain of salt, but there seem to be a series of UI elements in DMC4's code that indicated a reasonably robust training mode, with things like player and enemy settings, for things like infinite DT and enemy HP, and a cockpit display (whatever that means). The fact it wasn't implimented in SE is even more insane, but so is the fact that training modes in action games haven't been standardised across the genre since DMC3 at the latest. To paraphrase VashTSB, "If you wanted to practise in DMC4, you had two options: Download a trainer, or restart the mission, and that's a freedom of choice you only had if you were on PC". Thankfully it seems to be much better now, with Bayonetta's loading screens being the groundwork that eventually got us to DMC5 allowing us to drop whatever enemy we choose into the mode to practise on as we see fit. Even before that, DmC had a fairly barebones one that allowed you to practise against a single, motionless enemy, the Lesser Stygian I think. - 1:04:54 - This is a good point; sadly game companies are gonna do as game companies do, and deluxe editions are part and parcel of the industry. It sucks, and while it's easy to overlook, given that they're just variants on existing weapons that come packaged alongside the other, newer ones, it's definitely a weird, corporatey choice that I doubt Itsuno would've done were his hand not forced. And I'd say that's about all I've got! I hope I don't end up dominating the C&C video(s?) when they end up getting uploaded. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • A few tidbits I think worth mentioning: Since charge shot also activates color up, using it will always use up one color up charge. You can also save color up charges by releasing the button while attacking or in any other animation. Gerbera's neutral attack blasts the enemy away, really weird cause I have Overture for that and its the defining difference to the superior GP01. Pasta Breaker's attack works a little differently than Punch Line in how it hits enemies, tending to drill them away instead of smacking them around the same area. Some enemies (especially bosses) can break through Ragtime's standard bubbles. Being hit while charging a Break Age also breaks the arm. The addition of two snatches let's you have access to it even when holding an enemy or charging a break age, negating a major problem with Hold in DMC4. There's also the Dual Snatch in DT. Raaaaaawhiiiiiide boosts Wire Snatch, pulling in some medium sized enemies and dealing damage. Healing from Sweet Surrender or Recovery Provocation doesn't continue when out of combat, no sitting around between each fight for free heals. Recovery Provocation can also only be done if you win his credits minigame, can only be used once per mission, and wears off either when hit, going into DT, or after enough time passes. EX Provocation only gives orbs in combat. Special Provocation puts Nero in a special state while active (also inactivated when hit or DTing). When he first goes into Special Provocation, his damage is reduced, I believe it's about .8 what it normally does, but as he defeats enemies the multiplier goes higher, I believe it's 7 kills for 1.2x but I'm not certain since you can't test it out very well in The Void. Knuckle can actually be done in any animation you can't cancel out of, even the beginning of a jump or start of a taunt or when charging maximum bet, holding streak, or the wind up of Punch Line Break Age. It can also be used sometimes in Buster animations, though sometimes only when also in DT and/or using the Breaker instead of Bringer. Split's changed input in 5 is directional input back. While Nero only has one sword, it has more moves than other weapons, with 4 standard combos, 2 aerial combos, 5 directional input moves in 4 and 6 in 5, and a hold move in 5, not to mention the EX versions of the directional moves. He even uses the back to forward directional input, which iirc no other character uses until 5. Could be wrong about that, I'm not super familiar with DMC2 or 3. Super costume... hoo boy. Special Edition, while fun, doesn't change Nero too much. His wide swinging moves feel like some of the most fun I've had in the series in Legendary Dark Knight. With Dante getting Full Custom it's a little surprising Nero doesn't get something similar. Heck, with Showdown doesn't he get a sword of energy or whatever? Both 4 and 5 teased him using the Yamato or Sparda as a major weapon and then he... doesn't. Summoned swords get more swords when charged, and can be fired when in animations for extra damage, like during busters or charging showdown. Nero's D-pad is severely underdeveloped compared to Dante. At least he uses it... unlike V. Some Busters allow for additional effects like charged shot effects, additional hits, charging EX... dependant on the specific Buster. Some Taunts also allow for Color Up or EX refills. Ah the Void... thank you DmC. I'm fairly certain the timing for Act is more lenient than 4, same with the positioning for Enemy Step. Could be me, but I've heard others share the same sentiment. Nero is basically Lucia redone. Member of a devil hunting order on an island, while not amateurs they're not especially matured either, this is basically the biggest days of their lives and is truly the protagonist on a journey while Dante is just kind of on a job, introduced in an even numbered game, unique looking Devil Triggers... Always liked Nero. While I played... either 1 or 2 on PS2 as a kid, I didn't like them. Wasn't until 4 when my cousin and uncle introduced me to 4 that I got into the series. Then I bought and played the hell out of 1 and eventually bought and played the hell out of 4 and DmC. I didn't get 2 or 3 until years later when I was on the cusp of adulthood. Nero was my intro to DMC, and when Dante gameplay threw me in the deep end in 4 I missed him. Of course going back now, I love the Dant Man just as much, but I feel both 4 and 5 hamper both of them with the pacing. Nero running the front half of his games and Dante running the back half keeps making it feel like they aren't being balanced right, especially if 4 or 5 was someone's entry point. You ever notice Nero on the non-NG+ difficulties never fights Blitzes, or those fire dog enemies, or Furies? Meanwhile you take control of Dante and you have a new character you have to learn how to fight 2/3 of the roster with even before they start adding new enemies. Hey now, Nero took down one of his bosses in 4, Bael (and of course Sanctus and the Savior)! Not his fault there's a near identical pallette swap Dante fights later.

  • The weight nero puts behind his hits and his body movement is SOLID. When he swings you feel like hes about to drag his toes like a boxer almost coming off the ground giving their hardest punch, really reaching. Almost Anakin Skywalker-like. Neros stance is also EXTRA wide with his feet and toes actually pointing way out like hes crows footed. His strange hoodie and leather straps on his back bring his midline WAY high up, as high as you could go really, making his legs look very long making him look super tall.

  • I hope in DMC 6, Nero gets devil arms from bosses, they would still work like the breakers, they can be broken with super moves. But he can switch like styles and instead of being destroyed they go on recovery. And then I think that guns in the DMC franchise are incredibly lacking, gunslinger is one of the main styles and in 3 you were expected to be relying mainly on guns and yet they really need a lot more moves. Dt shots, gunslinger combos with guns, and more directional and aerial moves with guns would make them a lot more fun to play with. I also think blue rose should get a timing mechanic like exceed for like a quick draw.

    • you're barely meant to rely on guns in DMC3 did we play the same game

      @GribbleGob@GribbleGob11 ай бұрын
    • @@GribbleGob I feel like I brought up more interesting things than just insinuating that guns were supposed to be used but maybe I should've explained it better. In DMC 3 we were restricted to 1 style per level. Gunslinger was one of those styles, in that game you were forced to focus on one aspect, blocking, dodging, expanded melee moves, and expanded ranged moves. The problem is that swordmaster effectively doubles your moveset while gunslinger adds a few new options, combine this with the fact that guns have 1 basic attack while weapons can have 4-5. While obviously we're playing as Dante so he's gone use all his weapons regardless of his style, swordmaster incentivise weapons because that's what the style gives you. Why would anyone ever use guns when they are so vastly inferior. Gunslinger incentivises you to use your guns but the game itself is telling you not to with their lacking move pool. In the later games this becomes less of a problem overall because style switching means it doesn't matter if there all balanced because you can use them all, but with how prevalent guns are to Dante it feels weird to have that style be so lacking.

  • couple of thing that you didn't mentioned in the DMC4(which you proabably know) - you can rev to gain exceed charge when you are in Ex-Streak holding pose. - shuffle first dash has i-frame. if you put it together with DTE + Shuffle dash + table hopper, you essentially has the longest i-frame in any action game period(and essentially farm style point on Agnus lab room "boss" fight) as for DMC5 sectoin - Nero's Bringer Snatch will bring you 2 enemy in DT. as for Nero and customizing you control mapping. i think it not just required, but meant to be part of his characterization through gameplay, the guy was a genius, the red queen in DMC4 was his own work. he customize the standardized military sword to fit his own need. same as you customize the control layout to fit your playstyle which is more apparent in DMC5 where you pretty much have to choose which one you would prefer to be able to easily accessed. Breakage, Charged Shot or Bringer.

  • I reckon, that Not being able to completely comfortably play as Nero in DMC5 post game may make sense like, how he doesn't have enough control Due to the new moves. Like, extra frames for moves like exceed, royal guard, etc. Are better in new games, partly because of how the games' feedback and stuff affect newer games in general, but also like, in terms of story, like, the characters are more experienced and powerful, being able handle moves and perform more skills...

  • Nero was also essentially my first dmc character and i also put it down a quarter in and started playing dmc3 when i finally got a ps2 copy. That being said after i learned devil may crys honestly strange priorities of gameplay mechanics especially the combo style jump and just generally knowing what to do with moves when, i fell in love with the game and regretted not going deeper bc i agree its too shallow at first youre already limited to one weapon you need to give me something to chew on yaknow? Give me more moves. I COMPLETELY understand nero not having a bunch of weapons like dante honestly i didnt even notice, and thats a good thing. Im glass they had some balls and really went for it on the red queen and invested heavily in that. Instead of maybe spreading dev time over many mediocre weapons. That being said the no yamato thing is a total sin especially since immediately in the next game he loses it. I honestly wasnt done with this version of nero even though i adore dmc5. Even though it is less classy than its older titles it looses some high moral role model character points. I think a dmc '4.5' was really needed. Where they keep this system and engine and then just build more weapons and environment and expand before the entire overhaul to dmc5 next gen. Story and mechanically its missing a beat with nero and you arent giving nero a chance. So many people HATED nero, JUST because they LOVED dante. So you never give nero a chance like we gave dante a chance. I totally get nero being sloppy and he has to earn his way up, but once again nero feels choked to me. Hes loyal but they have him flash in the series like a one night stand and the people who like him dont have time to get too attached and wouldnt want to. The same EXACT thing happened with mgs2 and raiden and snake if you remember. Now people love raiden. I was a true fan bc i loved raiden and snake honestly i like raiden more. Snake is made to be loved, he is every rough hero trope rolled into one. Raiden isnt this legendary guy and he is fresh and new and i dont even full understand his tropes and it was really going somewhere then once again he got kindof snuffed out in development and the down times. Raiden and nero are characters who im saying have open endedness FOR ONCE in story telling. I literally dont know what the deeper meaning is yet bc they are meta in a way but not. Theyre the outsider of their own world. Obviously so is dante and snake. But.....they are the type to...DIVERT EXPECTATIONS thats exactly how i would describe it. And in that way they actually challenge you to be more intelligent and look at yourselves. Why are you judging them so harshly? What does that say about YOU. Everyone loves snake and dante. But raidens entire experience was to emulate that hes just as good as snake in shadow moses, they even call him snake when you start the game. Nero is very very similar. And they did nothing wrong besides be themselves. Should they have be created to be exactly like their "rival"? A carbon copy? That says more about fans being like an ill tempered child when they lose interest in their toys and always need new ones. Then you get them one and they hate it. But its actually the same toy with a different color. Then theyre mad you tricked them and showed then their own immaturity. I could eat dante and virgils psychology all day long. Its deep af. But nero is also deep but they DONT LET IT GET DEEP. Nero is a perfect example of the paradox of being a good loyal person actually makes you angry and vulnerable in a corrupt world.....that is a wayyyyyy more important message to society than dante and virgils message. To the world and what they need to hear. You make art people need not want, if you actually want to make the world better. That being said dantes story is just as important on a selfish personal level and thats fine. No one relates to him and virgil more than the exact type of fan I AM. My mother snd father both died when i was young, me and my father not having a good relationship and my mother being like an angel. Her name was actually Angela. It sent chills through my body when i first learned of dante and virgil story thats why i was drawn to the game like a moth to the flame looking for ACTUAL philosophical life answers. But i will say neros story and character is something the world needs a lot more on a broader scale. And what does it say about humanity that we rejected him?...........the exact kindof reaction and treatment why Nero has the bad fatherless delinquent attitude he does. Delinquent? Yes, there is nothing holding him to his good morals other than his own code. He could be a total shtbag and for good reason. He is a rebel for love. He is a fighter for good. He is angry for peace. He is seen as bad for being good in a system that is seen as good but is bad. He is the walking talking contradiction of our society. Hes the framed innocent good man in a prison of real criminals. And to survive the environment he has to be angry. When really he just wants to love Kyrie.

    • Sorry for any typos. I understand nero deeply for reasons i wont explain. Im saying kyrie is more important than dante and virgils mother and father bc they are gone. Kyrie is alive. And its changeable and something of neros that he needs to protect. If you think about your parents who passed either way you are going to sulk into a deep depression. Im saying kyrie is a reason to be alive, to live, for nero. To move forward and make a better future. That is so important and rare now. Im sure nero cares who his father is but thats not his doing or up to him. You wouldn't be happy even if you found him. Why invest in more hate and revenge? Looking back is death. It is. The book has been written. Rereading it will never change what happened. With kyrie its like nero gets to write the last chapter 💖 thats why she is the symbol for everything worth living for to him. Let the devils fight. Let generational hatred consume the old. Nero wants to plant his own garden and write his own story, he could choose anything, but he chooses to be good. And they try to take that away from him too.

    • I felt that hard! Nero is so me, after putting so much trust and time/energy into family and looking up to others, I finally under what It means to be let down and treated like a fool when you give your all. Finding out the brother you once looked up to is a pathetic nonce would shake anyone's world view as it did mines, and if there's one thing that vergil taught me it's that we have to save our selves. I'm overall tired and done with family and even at just 18 I'll live alone and cut out all useless people to hold me back and drive crazy, family or not. I'm most definitely sick of people pretending they know me and I dont know the real them when it's right in front of me and I'm not stupid.
