  • Just wanted to leave this here since not a lot of people know about the just frame charge for Ifirit attacks and how it stacks with the nightmare beta damage boost. You can also retain the nightmare beta damage boost by performing a distortion when activating DT. There is a video by ExcelitoL that shows this in action. "Devil May Cry 1 about Ifrit Damage & Nightmare Distortion (자막 있음)"

  • THAT'S THE GOOD SHIT WHOOOOOO YEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! Said it a fair few times before with friends and stuff, but DMC1 may not be the deepest action game out there, but when taken as a whole, I'd easily still rank it in my top 10 favourite games of all time, and top 5 action games period; with only DMC3 and 5 being definitively above it. Sure, Bayonetta 1 and Ninja Gaiden Black and 2 might have more to their combat, but there's so much I love about DMC1; its short length makes it so damn easy to replay that I could beat it for breakfast every morning. The atmosphere is on point, the enemy roster is probably my favourite in the series to this day, all the bosses barring Griffon 2 and a few spots of the last third on DMD specifically(I still can't S Rank Nelo 3, Nightmare 3 or Mundus...) are at worse fine, and at best still some of the best of the genre. There's nothing save Griffon 2 that I ever look at and think, "Yeah, I wanna skip this part", like I do with the bike and rocket. or some of the secret missions while chasing Platinums in Bayo 1, or most of the bosses in NGB/2. Even the swimming section is like, a minute 30 of total playtime on a NG+ run for me, and like, 5 tops on a NG because of the secret mission. The difficulty escalation is still one of the absolute best in the genre, with DMD essentially making Sparda replace Alastor; DT healing gets completely removed so it's better to prioritise the constant damage boost at all times, and allowing skilled players to potentially prevent most enemies from ever DTing if they're good enough. Combined with all the secret tech, and it makes for one of the best experiences I've ever had playing a video game. That goddamn soundtrack is still one of the all time best, and I even stand by liking the simple story and cheesy VA work. There might not be many cutscenes and what's there might seem a little cobbled together, especially regarding Trish's revival (Viewtiful Joe notwithstanding, IYKYK), but it's sowing the seeds for the series' thematics of family and humanity, and I'll always crack a smile at lines like, "You're right, I'm his son, Dante! Sweet dreams!". Only a guy doing a performance as dorky as Drew Coombs could make that line work. Sure, there's some cryptic BS in there with the secret missions and a couple blue orb fragments, and you could definitely argue that the game's reliance on knowledge is alienating to the firsttime player, but for me? DMC1's just a game that gets better every single time I sit down and play through it. Short, simple, and sweet; the SSS. It's just a level select, permenant air hike and bloody palace away from being completely perfect for me. In regards to a remake, since it got brought up in the video, I've always been of two minds in terms of DMC1 getting that treatment. On the one hand, I wouldn't want it to either be essentially a DMC1 map pack for DMC5, even if it's the far more likely outcome. I love Itsuno as a director; DMC5 and 3 are my favourite games of all time and both Dragon's Dogma and DMC4 are in my top 15 and like 30 respectively, but DMC1 has such a unique feel to it from the rest of the series that I kind of eyeroll at the possibility of DMC5 Dante being near wholesale dropped into 1 and just going from there. But I also don't quite trust the idea of Kamiya remaking it, however slim it might be. DMC1 was clearly made while he was being constrained by budget, hardware and time (the devs had to basically beg him not to include QTEs because the game's workload was so heavy as is!), and given Bayo and Wonderful 101, great as they might be, both had a major focus on QTEs, setpiece bosses and gimmicky sections, it makes me feel a little on edge about the idea however you slice it. Thinking about the castle in the RE Engine makes my pants tighten tho, and given there's a lot of assets Capcom could use (Dante, Shadow, a version of Griffon and Nightmare, Sin Scissors and Nobodies from DMC5, castle environments from RE Village and 4RE, and DMC1 Dante's coat from MHW), I wouldn't be surprised if it's the next DMC project we end up getting to test a new director advised under Itsuno or something. We'll just have to wait and see. Stellar video overall, I always love a good piece about DMC1, as I've no doubt made clear in this very comment lol.

    • I beat DMC1 as my first DMC like, 2 weeks ago, and after my first playthrough with a list of rankings full of D's and C's; with barely any moves beyond stinger and Inferno purchase. It was miserable. After seeing the credits, It was one of the few times I sat back and said "...F*** that, I can do better." I immediately started a NG+ run on Hard and everything made sense. I was pulling off some insane shit, I was gaining red orbs thanks to rankings like crazy, I did missions close to ten times faster than on my first go, I got the entire move list unlocked at around midgame. It was labeled as Hard Mode but man it felt easier because I finally put the pieces on the puzzle. I loved it so much the moment I beat Hard Mode I went into DMD straight on and despite suffering sooooo much on Nightmare 3 and Mundus 2, the amount of catharsis I felt when that special ending cutscene played on DMD was ENORMOUS. It's not a perfect game, it's a product of its time and circumstances and it had the cross to bear of being the first of its kind, but it's so goddamn cool man. I'm on the middle of my DMC3 playthrough and while I'm enjoying that one a lot already I can tell DMC1 is something that's become truly special to me.

  • I missed the shotgun on my first play through. I love devil may cry 1 and it’s so funny that it is not concerned at all about you missing upgrades or guns

  • Liked seeing someone actually talk through some of the hidden tech, but really wished you had included the demon specific critical hits (other than SM1), as well as the unique fatalities animations.

  • Great video! On the stingy red orb economy: I got through the game by saving at difficult bosses, losing, then replaying the entire stage. You start again with all the orbs you had when you saved and get to gather the entire stage worth of orbs again. So being stuck on a boss long enough would naturally gain me orbs over time until I either unlocked some skill that made the boss more approachable or got good enough at the boss that I didn't need it. Someone else mentioned doing this more deliberately, just replaying a stage on purpose over and over to farm orbs, so I guess I'm not the only one to realize the power of saving at the end of a stage. Definitely a good tool to let struggling players know about.

  • Just watched this and your Nero video. Both show impressive work looking into their characters via moveset and story integration. I'm looking forward to the DMC2 video, as not only does that have ideas that become series staples, but does have some good underneath the mess. I personally think Lucia should get a second chance, but that's just me. Though as a warning, much like DMC1, the movesets are not all there in the game. You have to find them through either experimentation or, thanks to nowadays, videos that go in-depth on said moves. Keep up the good work and good luck!

  • Great video, i love how you structured it but also delved into different topics in a fluid way!!! Love the detail too A few thoughts! id admit that i got around the low red orb count and lack of mission select by saving into a new save slot just before i thought it would be end of mission (which isnt always obvious). Then would reload the save and finally do the level as well as possible when comfortable, normally gaining a decent amount of red orbs just from enemies in the process. I managed to have all blue orbs/devil trigger fully upgraded by nightmare 3 boss. Regarding combat, im pretty sure the combos and details on enemy glossary are all in manual. Combo II is quite hard to pull off consistently Secret mission where you fight 3 shadows in the hallway i never managed to beat - still gives me nightmares😂

  • I've just recently gotten into the series proper with the first game and it's nice running into a video analysis about it. I remember this game kicking my ass when I was like 13 or something when I played this game but it had been around 10 years at that point since it originally released and I wanted to see what made the series so popular and wanting to be a fan but man I got humbled so hard. I had a hard time getting into the series even after having played Bayonetta. It's always been one of many blights on my gaming backlog that I haven't been able to get into this series, so I've been slowly rectifying that and am already getting ready to play through DMC 4. I got to say though I really like the original. DMC3 is the one a lot of people recommend getting into with it cementing how the series would move forward, but I really like the atmosphere and pacing of the original. Considering it was a reworked game based off one of the original iterations of RE4, I feel at home since I had also been going through that series awhile back. I also really enjoy the exploration of 1 since ive always liked searching through game maps as thoroughly as i can for neat secrets and items, but damn the ones in DMC1 are really hidden. Great video, i really respect the knowledge and dedication you have to this series and hope to watch more stuff from you, and hopefully this series in the near future.

  • Oof DMC2. Given what I've seen I am genuinely interested in what sort of video you can Wrangle out of that game. I watched a very good LP of it a long time ago and the person playing the game pointed out repeatedly how Limited your combat options really were.

  • I always take DMC1's cheesy dialogue and questionable writing as a good thing and partially intentional like every pre RE5 Resident Evil game and i'd rather have goofy genuine dialogue over boring trying-too-hard writing that takes itself too seriously. not saying other DMC games other than 2 are doing that, just my general opinion whenever I hear people talk about weird dialogue like a bad thing.

  • 22:00 You know, I see your point, but I think this is a horrible idea. Or well.. not horrible, but I just really really don't want that to happen. What I'd much rather see is simply them paying homage to DMC1's design and atmosphere in an entirely new game. Like having one or a couple missions set in a spooky castle or another environment which could serve a similar function. Especially since there's like one of these games coming out per decade, and you just know if they seriously remake 1, people won't fucking stop asking for 2 and 3 to be remade as well (I've even seen people asking for a 4 remake) And none of that is necessary. Just make new games. If people are really eager to see a specific thing done better, put it in a new game. Don't remake 2 to try remedy Lucia and the infested fucking chopper. Hope that makes sense... God I seriously need to make a video about this topic someday
