  • The whole POINT of the animated movie was that Mulan gets trained like every other dude and LEARNS to be a soldier. She wasn't a 'born killer'. This made her out to be a total Mary Sue ugh

    @Berries20@Berries203 жыл бұрын
    • The whole point of Mulan is that anyone with a good heart and enough bravery can achieve great things, I think. She had to learn, but not because she wanted to, but because it was needed. She puts herself in all kinds of danger to save her family (and, ultimately, her country). That’s heroic. New Mulan is... anything but.

    • I agree! Now when are you going to complain about all the "Gary Stus"? Tony Stark? Spider-Man? Falcon? Pretty much most heroes in the MCU? oh yeah... you won't... because they're men.

      @mikyto7313@mikyto73133 жыл бұрын
    • @@mikyto7313 I think there's a reason people don't complain about Gary Stus, specifically Spiderman and Tony Stark. Spiderman is always a struggling student/photographer in every show, while we know Tony has faced incredible loss and ptsd. A gary stu would be more like Luke Skywalker or Han Solo, and it's unfortunate people don't complain more about them when Rey is under scrutiny all the time, because they're totally Gary Stus.

I think Screen Junkies and many other people who have watched/reviewed the movie nailed on the head - there were good plot points but this movie under delivered on all of them. For example, the movie explores the concept of staying true to oneself and in this case, Mulan tries to hide her gift of strength, power and fighting abilities because those are traditional masculine attributes. What comes across to me is that you had to be special rather than you can do anything through hard work, determination and perseverance.

Yes, I put the quotes intentionally. "Chinese" phoenix and "Chinese" dragon, these legendary creatures are very different from "Middle-East" phoenix and Medieval dragon. Those "Chinese" phoenix and dragon are wrongly called phoenix and dragon but these names were borrowed without deep consideration of the real meaning and difference. It would have been better create some new words to describe them. "Chinese" phoenix has no connotation to fire: it won't reborn from fire.

    • It's not completely impossible for a chosen one narrative to work, you just have to make sure they're not automatically special or do things just because they're the chosen ones, but actually work hard to gain their skills. A good example would actually be Aladdin. He's technically a chosen one, but the movie doesn't dwell on it much, and also makes it clear he gained his skills over time. Another good one would be Bobby Pendragon from the Pendragon series. On the other hand, you have chosen ones who are put on a pedestal just because they're the chosen one and don't do much else, like Harry Potter, Bella Swan, or Alice from the live-action sequels.
