Even Hercules had to work harder for his character arc then this mulan did.
@Zack Smith Yeaaah
But he could go the distance...
"Being true to yourself" means taking off your family's treasured armor, letting your perfectly conditioned hair down and applying makeup before reentering a battle because IF YOU'RE A WOMAN YOU MUST BE GRACEFUL AND ATTRACTIVE, IT IS YOUR TRUE NATURE!
And don’t forget US WOMEN NEED TO HAVE OUR LONG HAIR HANGING DOWN, EVEN THOUGH IT’S EXTREMELY IMPRACTICAL FOR EVERY SINGLE PHYSICAL EXERCISE, LET ALONE BATTLE.
THANK YOU!!! That was the worst part of the whole movie & pissed me off so bad. Because obviously you’re not a woman unless you look like what people THINK a woman should look like. I’m sorry, but my short hair & baggy men’s clothes ARE me being true to myself. The entire message of this movie was reinforcing gender boxes & stereotypes & it’s so much worse because it’s supposed to be Mulan.

Alright so let me get this straight, they didn't include Mushu in the story because Disney said they wanted to make the movie more realistic. But that lady, she's a bird...
They also add a Magical bird(Feng Huang) that they totally mess up the look and act more like a greek phoenix than anything
@@askovtk4834 surprising how both Greek and Chinese or any other msytical creatures from other mythologies are described and portrayed with different and sometimes conflicting version (both in literature form and visual). So that Chinese Phoenix is still what it is, even the description of Feng Huang varies across different accounts.
But the bird doesn't talk. 🤣🤣
I think its because mushu was voiced by eddie murphy and you know how chinese hate black people, just google starwars poster in china, they removed finn in the chinese version.
It’s not historically accurate. They wanted to make it closer to the ballad of mulan
The whole POINT of the animated movie was that Mulan gets trained like every other dude and LEARNS to be a soldier. She wasn't a 'born killer'. This made her out to be a total Mary Sue ugh
The whole point of Mulan is that anyone with a good heart and enough bravery can achieve great things, I think. She had to learn, but not because she wanted to, but because it was needed. She puts herself in all kinds of danger to save her family (and, ultimately, her country). That’s heroic. New Mulan is... anything but.
I agree! Now when are you going to complain about all the "Gary Stus"? Tony Stark? Spider-Man? Falcon? Pretty much most heroes in the MCU? oh yeah... you won't... because they're men.
@@mikyto7313 I think there's a reason people don't complain about Gary Stus, specifically Spiderman and Tony Stark. Spiderman is always a struggling student/photographer in every show, while we know Tony has faced incredible loss and ptsd. A gary stu would be more like Luke Skywalker or Han Solo, and it's unfortunate people don't complain more about them when Rey is under scrutiny all the time, because they're totally Gary Stus.

I'm not even Asian, but when I saw the ORIGINAL AND FAR SUPERIOR Mulan, I connected with her. She had faults and weakness and a PERSONALITY; that she overcame using her wits. NOT SOME CHI STUFF. That's what made her relatable, and beloved to SOOOOOOO many people.
same here. she was literally my idol when I was a kid
You don't have to share a character's ethnicity to be able to relate to them. You just need empathy. The animated Mulan was a vulnerable human being with relatable struggles. She was one of the most relatable Disney characters imo.
I love how this trailer addressed the Uyghur issue. I hope more and more people would know about this.
Sadly I doubt more than 0.001% of people who find out will actually do anything beyond say how bad it is.

That bird lady is incredibly realistic. A worthy enough replacement. (*sarcasm*)
Mulan in 1998: "I did it to save my father." Mulan in 2020: "I did it to excel at kicking sharp pointy objects into people's chests."
At least the 1998 version followed Mulan's motive in the original poem. In the poem it was mentioned the only men in her family is his aging father, so when his family been drafted, his father must go. And no in the original story Mulan's family's size was not mentioned (assumed small), nor the "beauty contest".
This is basically toph's story but mulan is more serious

It wasn’t even a “song.” It was just him saying words in a kind of “song” way
Aladin was nice because they made it the same Story and music, but then you can also leave it by the animation movie-
I actually liked the Aladdin, but it’s nowhere near the original
I was anticipating that part. And then they just cut it. :(
Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast were both pretty good. And I don't know if I'd really consider it a remake considering how they deliberately turned the story on it's head, but Maleficent was also good. The rest though, not so much.
Og Mulan was perfectly empowering why did they have to try and force it
Copyright renewal is a powerful motivator it seems.
@@Soroboruo It's not "copyright renewal". After 90 years, people can still use the old Mulan design, but not the new one.

Kevin Faultner Witches don’t exist in China either. They should’ve made her a bird spirit.
Animated Mulan started with Huns invading. It sets the threat and tone (followed by mulan's morning routine setting the tone further) Live mulan starts with kid mulan doing stutns even pro athletes might find difficult. And when khan debuted, he and his crew just run up the wall magically sticking to it while dual wielding. (Sarcasm) yeah. Live mulan is more realistic.
I honestly would've preferred a movie about the shape shifting witch.....

Producers: This is meant to be "Realistic" so no talking dragon sidekick! But what about a shapeshifting bird witch? That's realistic!"
No mushu. No money
Not to mention the random Phoenix?
"So here's this giant enemy crab!"
The story of Mulan is a ballad; it comes from a poem and not about a historical figure so definitely open to interpretation and there have been many film adaptations. I think Screen Junkies and many other people who have watched/reviewed the movie nailed on the head - there were good plot points but this movie under delivered on all of them. For example, the movie explores the concept of staying true to oneself and in this case, Mulan tries to hide her gift of strength, power and fighting abilities because those are traditional masculine attributes. What comes across to me is that you had to be special rather than you can do anything through hard work, determination and perseverance.
@@KBVRdjFEVA lol Asians hate the fact there was a reliance and incorrect interpretation of chi, shape shifting witches and other stuff that made the movie become a stereotypical white interpretation of stories

There's one more thing inside the film that you can laugh at but that was not mentioned (and I'm not surprised). It's about the phoenix. "Chinese" phoenix is different from phoenix. Yes, I put the quotes intentionally. "Chinese" phoenix and "Chinese" dragon, these legendary creatures are very different from "Middle-East" phoenix and Medieval dragon. Those "Chinese" phoenix and dragon are wrongly called phoenix and dragon but these names were borrowed without deep consideration of the real meaning and difference. It would have been better create some new words to describe them. "Chinese" phoenix has no connotation to fire: it won't reborn from fire.
What Disney didn’t realize is that most people can’t relate to the “chosen one” protagonist who already have what others have to work really hard for. Most of us are just ordinary people trying to get by and this sorta message isn’t inspiring or relatable to us what so ever.
Wait... you're trying to tell me, that not everybody has special powers and is the chosen one?! 😳
Mary sue
Finally, someone who gets my feeling! Thanks a lot, mate.
Sofia the First embodies this entire message, lol. (It used to be pretty okayyy... Sigh.)
It's not completely impossible for a chosen one narrative to work, you just have to make sure they're not automatically special or do things just because they're the chosen ones, but actually work hard to gain their skills. A good example would actually be Aladdin. He's technically a chosen one, but the movie doesn't dwell on it much, and also makes it clear he gained his skills over time. Another good one would be Bobby Pendragon from the Pendragon series. On the other hand, you have chosen ones who are put on a pedestal just because they're the chosen one and don't do much else, like Harry Potter, Bella Swan, or Alice from the live-action sequels.
Mulan: is a great warrior due to rigorous training and a proclivity for quick thinking problem solving and creativity New mulan: she has the force (chi) so she's naturally good at everything One of these is an actual good character the other is cookie cutter hollywood "chosen one"

She’s not a Chinese citizen lol, she has a different passport. That already gives her a lot of advantage over other Chinese celebs
Pretty sure her grandfather is a pretty high up there Chinese official. I think she genuinely believes that the CCP are correct
She should definitely be a Chinese citizen rather than holding American citizenship now...
@@hamijai She is legally Chinese. China doesn't recognise dual citizenship.
you guys went easy on this movie.. seriously. my hatred's not satisfied.
There's a Chinese lady who made a KZhead channel just to rant about it. You need to watch her video.
@@phun1901 What's the name of the channel?
@@phun1901 yeah, link man!
@@patrickperlas the women is Xiran Jay Zhao, and the video is "everything culturally wrong with mulan"
@Hugo Carriere
The child Mulan had more emotions than the adult Mulan. Even after revealing herself she's still emo af
That's because the adult had to keep up the perfectly smooth doll-face that befits a female lead. Can't have wrinkles on a heroine! Also: gender stereotypes are bad.
1:57 God I really thought the mark on her forehead is the logo for Huawei LMAOOO
"Let's cut the songs so the movie is more realistic" *adds a shapeshifting witch and gives Mulan the Force* "We had to cut Mushu because it was insensitive to Chinese people." *adds westernized Phoenix*
It's actually not a westernized phoenix. Westernized phoenix are flaming birds. Eastern phoenix are not flaming and are more like a peacock have you ever seen asian phoenix art?
Mushu was a "westernized" dragon. Chinese dragons have control over watery phenomenon and live at the bottom of rivers, lakes, etc. On the other hand, the western version of the phoenix is cover in flames, while the one in the movie wasn't. Besides, the phoenix simbolize the male and female aspects. I think that was a more meaningful change but the "Chi" part was just mambo jambo for me
@@ximenarevolle1812 I've read comments from Chinese people here on YT saying that they don't actually assign gender to dragons. They merely represent good luck. There's nothing male about dragons. That's some western bs someone made up.
@@antobutera my mom is chinease and used to read me chinease tales of dragons brothers and there were from a chinease book 🤔
Tea Tea he means the depiction of the phoenix in this movie is much closer to the Egyptian Phoenix (not western but not really Orient) than the Chinese Phoenix.
Disney: We want this to be realistic. Disney: So anyways here's a magic falcon lady
And a winged protagonist \ flying phoenix too lol
Don't forget bad guys who can catch arrows in mid-air and magically walk up wall
NICK, SCHMIDT, AND WINSTON that got me XDD
I reckon this movie would've been solid if they got rid of the magical element and made it purely a war film. The whole sorcerous character just felt out of place and if we're honest, could've killed anyone she wanted without trying
I still think it’s hilarious. “Yeah, we’re not gonna have Mushu in the movie, because we want it to be a more realistic take on the story. Also, Mulan has magical powers.”
you forgot the most important part: theres actually a phoenix instead
Wow wow wow wow
And one of the characters can turn into a falcon.
"Also the behind the scenes crew has no Asian people, but don't worry, we visited a few museums in Europe"
@Jennifer J. Wrong channel
ikr... she's a woman so she doesn't need practical hair and armour?!
Yea... The armor that she stole from her dad was cramping her style
Well tecnically the absense of armor is a wuxia thing.
I thought the same thing, her reveal came in the most inappropriate moment, mid battle. You need your armor girl your not immortal, then again she's a Disney heroine so she is.
Wait I thought she basically was immortal because of the chi thing this movie had for her
She should keep the bun on her head, but the armor cramped the bumps on her chest She no amazon warrior, petite she maybe
Just when you think 2020 can't get worse, here comes Disney
The Emperor's new dude 😂 that's a good one
Even Screen Junkies can't resist a dig at people who commit accidental arson in the name of the latest baby fad.
I mean, they set our state on fire so DIG AWAY
They barely account for a fraction of the fires though. Most are from lightning and just the hot temperatures
Mad respect to Screen Junkies for mentioning the atrocities against Uyghurs
But still understating them: organ harvesting, forced abortion, forced sterilisation, slave labour, whole families in prison, thought police, etc... And not mentioning how in the end titles of the movie, Disney even _thanks_ the security agency in the region that is responsible for all this.
screen rants "pitch meeting" didn't bring it up and that upset me
Findecanor very true, but it's still nice that they even called attention to it. That's more than Disney and most companies are doing
That and the main actress is apparently into oppressing Hong Kong. I don't need to watch this and support oppression.
Findecanor Maajid Nawaz listener? Thanks to him it is a lot more well known in the UK.
3:52 "Falcon Punch"... that Super Smash Bros. Reference XD
Hmm, yes. A tiny net _is_ a death sentence.

MaiAolei sword art online is an anime about people who got stuck in a vr mmo game world where Dying in the game kills you irl

The Honest Trailer was better than the movie.
Waaay better. :D
Same with Les Miserable I’ve NEVER been so bored in my entire life, 3 hours? I thought I was going to go insane
Honestly
That happens alot with Honest Trailers. Listening to someone talk about the movie is better than watching the movie.
In one small redeeming way, it made watching it worth it Just to understand how far Honest Trailers justifiably rips into it

I love the “Kung Pow: Enter the Fist” reference! Master Betty: Yes, a tiny Net is a death sentence. It’s a net and it is tiny!”
"And a gender reveal party..." OUCH, OUCH, OUCH. LOL.
@@the_marvvv Everything leading up to that was good, but that one was the ultimate way to close out.
Disney:We're are not going to have songs or Mushu because we are too make it more realistic. Also Disney: We added Qi (The Force), Mulan was born with powers, and we added Witches. Also for good measure we have a thank you to a GOVERNMENT AGENCY THAT COMMITS GENOCIDE. If anything they might finally stop making live action remakes.
Not before they make a live action remake of Disney's Hercules staring Kevin Sorbo.
And all that pandering to the chinese was for nothing too, because turns out they don’t like the movie.
@@Charlie0l9 I personally think they are making the movie for the Chinese Goverment, which won't bode well with Chinese citizen.
Plasma Shade I laughed so hard at that comment 🤣🤣🤣
wow, now you make it sound like a star wars movie
i'm currently rewatching New Girl so the Nick, Schmidt and Wilson part killed me 😂
Saw this on my recommended...just thought: ooooooh boi....this is gonna be brutal
Look how they massacred my boy Chien Po you telling me they couldn’t find a single sumo sized guy to play him damn
I love him too!
The gentle giant... Not even an attempt to find a huge guy to play the part. Very disappointed.
He's such a sweet guy why did they do him like this
Disney did our guy a big dirty one.
Honesty Disney could even use him for body positively, soldiers come in all shapes in sizes or something. But NOPE Ladyhawke needed to... exist.
Everyone: So is this gonna be a war film or a fantasy film? Disney: Yes
Making a good live action Mulan is very difficult definitely an inconvenience.
Making a good war/fantasy film isn't something new. Remember Lord of the Rings, and to a lesser extent The Hobbit?
@@mangeshk9002 i understood that reference
Pan’s Labyrinth is a war fantasy film.
