Disney continues their quest to live-action every single animated movie they've ever made, with this dull and boring Mulan movie. The magic is missing here, folks, and it's not just because there's no Mushu. And we count the sins to prove why.
Thursday: Sins of a mid-aughts comedy that got a surprising sequel.
No movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

BetterHelp is a service we use personally, and all therapists on the service are licensed & certified by their own state board. Please don't sow misinformation at a time when people crucially need a service such as this. Thanks.
Good on you for getting help!

@The Hermit no therapist service is without sin
Don’t listen to the hate man therapy sites help people you’re promoting a good thing
I dont buy that you guys “personally” use the service
The live action changed the message from “anyone can be strong with enough effort” to “you need superpowers to be strong”
Honestly it's a big issue when it comes to female protagonists. I would love to see more Ellen Ripleys, that kicks 100x more ass then the average dude without giving up being human or a female(Well Alien Ressurection aside ofc, I mean seriously).
Nah it should just be "anyone can be strong with plot armor".
@@magnuscarlsson9969 I know right, they don't give them any flaws. And they just overpower them.
True
That’s one of the main problems of the movie
Ngl, I feel like Mulan being superhuman kinda undermines one of themes of the original movie, in that she started out as an ordinary woman but became a talented soldier thanks to diligent training and hard work.
This is exactly what I had been thinking, and why I never watched it. It takes the meaning and purpose out of the story!
She was also smart!! Like she was strong but she also had brains to problem solve. Having some super power undermined all of it.
That is what I said to my sister but she said it was better that way. In this movie, Mulan didn't earn her power she was just born with it.
and dont forget: she has the aid of her magical pheonix pokemon
it does indeed do that. Because apparently the big wigs at Disney think that Wamen can only be stronk or smrt if they have actual god damn super powers and not through things like their wit, or their determination, or bravery, or problem solving skills. You know, like the ORIGINAL?
OG Mulan: I was a simple girls who joined the army in my father’s place. I trained hard to fit in, but eventually learned that true strength comes from within. 2020 Mulan: I have magic that makes me cool, so I fight because I have magic.
OG Mulan always win
She's got real character too.
@Olivia WeltonRauh then he simps
Og mulan: I want to save my dad :D New mulan: THE FORCE IS STRONG WITHIN ME, I CAN FEEL IT.

The reason Mulan removed her armour, is because she remembered she was already wearing plot armour.

Animated Mulan: Young girl saves China with her intelligence, ingenuity, and grit. Live action Mulan: Young girl saves China with luck and magic.
To be fair, animated Mulan had some luck and magic too. But I agree she survived more on her own intuition than pure luck.
Animated Mulan : A woman can achieve as much as a man with hardwork and intelligence Live action Mulan : Ah yes I am a Mary sue blessed with talents from the start everyone else is pathetic oh look I have superpowers
I completely agree, but after re-watching both the original Mulan never really became adept with a sword, and relied on the big hunky man to do all the real fighting. I just want the Mulan that starts like the animated one where she is smart and courageous but weak and untrained and ends like the live action where she is an expert with the sword and actually does the fighting herself.
@@coffeebeanbenjamin Mulan is the one who beat Shen Yu in the end. Not her hunky boyfriend. Being unarmed, by the way. If it was not a kids movie they could have easily shown Mulan dispatching him with his own sword. She can use spear, sword and bow. It´s just that the animation was not focused an anyone actually doing much fighting.
@@coffeebeanbenjamin Mulan defeated Shanyu with a FAN, which is the symbolism of femininity. She basically won Because she's a women, that's more powerful than she "adpat to the old manly way" to defeat him. @@livingphantom It’s bad on its own merits. Not because it’s not like the Disney film.
The fact that they removed Mushu to “make the movie more realistic”, but added a frikkin Phoenix makes me peeved
not to mentioned OP witch.
@@YouDonkeyfu or Chi
Dont forget the shapeshifter witch. WTF
That Phoenix was 100% unnecessary. It appeared like 2 or 3 times and what purpose did it even serve? Remind her of her family and legacy and whatev the fuck that was supposed to mean. Cutting out all those phoenix scenes would have literally not changed the movie at all.
So. Effin. Peeved.
Mulan in the animated version was so relatable. She was clumsy, had a hard time fitting in, and was truly struggling to find her place in the world. But then she realized how strong she was and used her power to save China. It was a beautiful journey of self discovery that was also fun and witty. This movie stripped all of that away from the story, and it just breaks my heart at how horribly they destroyed the true message of Mulan.
I couldn't agree more.. It's just sad how much they changed Mulan from, my favorite to least favorite disney movie
it is also sad how they said that it was supposed to be closer to the original ballads and poems of Mulan than the cartoons but ended up being further than any of the former movies loosely based off of them.
@@momoe9349 so true! And I hate that they took Mushu out because they said that it made the movie "more realistic." But in what way is a spirit guide in the form of a magical phoenix and a magical force that gives Mulan her power as a warrior more realistic?

The only good part of these live action remakes is proving how good the originals were and that animation is actually a quality form of movie.
Animation (especially anime) often expresses emotions way more deeply than live action
@@theself5738 well anime has a bunch of silly things that make it blatantly obvious what they're feeling. Its almost like a lot of the shows don't take themselves seriously.
@@user-fs4um7oq9c Lets be honest, most anime's take their absurd fantasy plots much more seriously than this drivel. An anime character would never discard their armor because of 'girl power' or 'your chi is pig dung'...

Horrid. 'Chi', bad acting, bad story, bad editing, no valuable lesson, gives a TERRIBLE message, fails to effectively empower woman, and doesn't give anything substantial in the slightest, to the meaning of being true to yourself. If I watched this movie on an airplane, I would still walk out.

And worse : no more the woman who feels bad in a role of wife., but is capable in other... Here is a superheroine who beats any enemy but cannot stop a hen. Stereotype.
ahahahahah
That was the worst point of this to me. I actually like some things about this film. But making it a version of crouching tiger hidden dragon which is a very good Chinese art form but I didn't think it worked here. The legend of Mulan has her becoming a great warrior through experience, training and innate leadership. And that diminished her I think in this film. The second thing was playing Darth Vader and Luke and return of the Jedi with her in the witch. It meant that the biggest moments were not move on with her family or the emperor or her enemy but this other character
Worst thing by far is that it doesn’t have “A Girl Worth Fighting For” and its abrupt end and cut to the waste of the battlefield from the original. That scene was utterly heartbreaking.

@@aaronruf8421 Also Böri Khan, because what a stupid fucking name. Idk if it is accurate. Shan Yu was so much more intimidating as a name.
I think that was just the simple lip service that the moviemakers gave the decision, and not the full story. Really, Mushu is more of a tone issue given the nature (read: loud and contemporary in a historical setting) of his comic relief. I think the honest truth is that Mushu was one of the more forced anthropomorphic animal sidekicks that Disney looked to always include in its cartoons, and that animated version might have been better off without him. We'll never know, but of course given that he was in the film and tons of people grew up watching it he's beloved now. These filmmakers didn't see a place for the comic relief animal sidekick, but did see a place for a mystical animal that would appear (potentially real, potentially not) to offer implied guidance at key moments. But, rather than try to explain all that (which would be fair, right or wrong), they went with the short and simple (but not entirely accurate) explanation, if that makes sense.
@@redsoxu571 You know, they could have just made mushu more serious. Like the dragon guardian who was actually supposed to look after mulan. On the other hand, mulan is so OP, why would her ancestors give a fuck about HER safety, right? Who needs a Hawk Yoda working with a tyrant for what again? The right of super powered females? If you can have an ambiguous reptilian sidekick, where it is unsure whether he wants to help mulan or stop her . They could have just taken the literal picture of chinese dragons of wise and intelligent creatures and put him in as the "i don´t know whether he´s evil, or good, but he seems to help the Mc" kind of character. Mushu could have taken exactly the same role as the shapeshifting Witch. But hey, to pull something like that off, you need actual good writing and not "Huns can accurately shoot at soldier of several distances at rapid fire without adjusting the trebuchet. They shoot the avalanche 200+m behind mulan"

Two things 1. As mostly everyone knows, the battle scene was filmed near a concentration camp. 2. Jeremy advertised BetterHelp, which was proven years ago to be a scam.
@JayLeeBeanz Philip DeFranco and several other creators got in loads of trouble for it too back in 2018. DeFranco responded but didn’t seem to care. Everyone else was quiet and said nothing
@@aydenmarietta4906 wow
That BetterHelp Scam Is Exactly Why I Unsubscribed From Phillip DeFranco.
I could be wrong, but I'd argue that Betterhelp isn't as much a scam as it is a "know-what-you're-paying-for" kind of website. At least in France, a therapist or a counselor can be literally anyone who has decided to help people with their mental health. Therefore, most people don't realize that only certain job titles are linked with actual long studies, like those a psychiatrist would have done for instance. The site does provide the accreditations of each therapist, but I have no idea how valid these are, being not familiar with the US system in that regard. So basically, you pay for a service that matches you with a random range of therapists, which could be perfectly competent or not, depending on your luck. Anyway, I personally used their service for a couple of months, and it proved useful in a time I didn't have any access to face-to-face competent therapists. Even though I can honestly say the therapist I got was only okay-ish, he did provide me various basic tools to work on my issues and provided me much-needed support at that time. I think it's the kind of service that would be useful on a very situational level, and most of the time only as a short-term option. So yeah... I wouldn't say it's a scam... but it is probably advertised as something fancier/more competent/more efficient than it is.

I love how they wanted to “make it more realistic” but then you got phoenixes, witches, guys running on walls for 10 seconds, and three hours worth of broken logic.
The animated film was more realistic funny enough.
It’s kinda weird how in the original stories her character was weak and flawed. Only when she faced her fears in order to protect the ones she loves does she over come her disadvantages. She goes through the process of finding strength in odd places and her entire existence was a stance against the rules that didn’t make sense. However the newer movie throws all of that out the window. They turned a wild rebel with flaws and character development into an emotionally unstable static wuss of a machine that was fully loyal to the government. I wonder why Disney would want to pander to the Chinese government? Oh yeah… Money.

I'm a person who isn't picky with movies. Give me a movie I'll probably like it. But when I watched the Mulan remake, I absolutely, with every fiber of my being, hated it. 1. Aside from the millions Disney put into it...they at least get to keep that) Cause China has made multiple version of this story, including a sequel. @@spooderman6312 Ok Aladdin was fine. It wasn't as good as the first but I pressed through and I would watch again if I REALLY wanted to. Also Will was pretty cool. Dumbo had NOTHING to do with the original, and was pretty out there and all over the place. The only reason I dont say it sucks is because of Danny DeVito. Jungle Book was actually enjoyable, and I would watch again, but main problem was that ALOT of songs were cut, when they could have been easily be cut in their respective places (ex: the Elephant march song, Trust in me). It was respectful to the cartoon and found the new elements not too serious and cool to look at. Lion King was too serious, and would not watch again. because they wanted to make the remake, more realistic, that's why Mushu and Cricket is not in the movie. I think the did a great job with ''realism'' .
I’d also like to point out that chi literally means “breath” and (to my tiny understanding) is a life force that moves through everyone, not a randomly assigned superpower. And as everyone else has mentioned, mulan was about hard work, not being a chosen one. Also I miss the music 😭
Both stories had the same agenda of empowering women, and it's a great agenda. The difference is, the animated movie was executed brilliantly. Showing that women can be equal or even exceed men through sheer will, and effort. It's empowering because everyone can do it. While the live action movie pushed it's agenda by literally making Mulan just "Built Different" so unless you're a born prodigy in sports that can do a triple back flip in the air and holding your entire body weight with a bamboo chute. Than you're *just f u c k e d*
Ah yes Live Action Mulan, the warrior who was perfect since she was a child, didn't have to train to become a warrior, and has no character flaws.
And overcomes no personal struggles with identity or relationships or her training. Ugh.
Why are you guys talking about Star Wars The Force Awakens? Stay on topic please
@@rickhunter6513 my bad. I mix up the two sometimes
Sam totally understandable seeing both train wrecks were produced by Disney 🙄
Who let Kathleen Kennedy near the script again?
Not gonna lie, I am really disappointed that you guys didn’t do a sin counter for every time they said loyal, brave, or true. It’s enough for a drinking game at this point.
My bf and I made a drinking game out of the words chi and honor 😂
You’d die. 😂
I’m disappointed you didn’t add 100 extra sins for not having Mushu
It existing is a sin in itself, nothing like the original and that’s heartbreaking.

Hi. i'm currently trying to get people to report more. For obvious reasons, as reporting out of petty spite is a thing, yes, but not everyone is like that; some indeed want to make the internet better, ya know. I think some people want to make the world a better place and/or are dissatisfied with youtube, so i made a Wiki that provides people with Links. Links that i spend years to gather and confirm. I confirmed that these links lead to bad people or toxic people of one kind or another. Racists, Sexists, Mobber, combinations of the just listed, all that and more. Simple concept, right? If that sounds interesting to you, just try to find the' Link Project Wiki', to find under something like: 'linkprojectforthesakeofeveryone.fandom' and then .com. That should work, i think. Hope this comment isnt too random. Well, deal with the randomness.

This movie deserves a million sins from the fact alone that they made Mulan into a perfect person who never truly struggles. I'm sick and tired of movies making "strong female lead characters" just to pander some journalists, even if it means ruining the whole premise of the original character
Exactly. Besides, this Mulan isn't "strong". She's a superhuman being. The original Mulan was strong. She overcame her obstacles and grew as a human being, learning from her experiences, getting a bit better everytime. THAT is strength. Not the BS they pulled in that movie. No human being is like that. If they truly wanted to show a strong "female lead character", they would have shown the original Mulan.
The 2009 Chinese version actually shows us how Mulan deals with the fatigue of constant warfare and seeing her brothers in arms dying on the field of combat.
The original Mulan was a "strong female lead character" -- this isn't that. So... they were ALREADY making strong female leads and by removing that element of it, they actually created a WEAK female lead for this movie. So, maybe you should be less concerned with strong female leads and more concerned with how Disney failed to understand what a strong female lead is.
sexist writers do not understand what "strong female characters" are. they think it means "power fantasy character who cannot be beaten." sadly, they seem to have forgotten the basic definition of strong vs weak characters in writing. since most basic creative writing courses teach how to create strong characters, disney should maybe invest in some of those classes for its writers.
@@ikeekieeki I dunno, I think the bad/indifferent/lazy writing is more about how little respect most filmmakers now have for the intelligence of the audience. Everything Disney makes is written for the stupidest person in the room.
Mulan 1998: With hard work and dedication, girls can do as well as boys! Mulan 2020: Be born with superpowers! Don't forget to thank the concentration camp guards!
"What man would want to marry a literal Jedi?" "All of them?"
literally EVERYTHING is wrong with this movie... Also... why did he say things about taking off the armor, but not TAKING HER HAIR OUT OF HER BUN??? Seriously, I don't care how cool it is- having your hair down during a fight is the worst. it obscures your view and gets in your way.
not to mention your hair could get caught on something
Exactly! Literally anyone with long hair in any SPORT knows to keep your hair up bc it’s annoying as hell when you’re trying to do something and it falls in your face.
Would have been okay if she cut it, BUT SHE DIDNT
Never mind the fact that your enemy can grab it, which puts you at a serious disadvantage. There's a reason soldiers keep their hair short.
True, but the hair was the more-than-adequate symbolic gesture, a visual representation of the decision she's made. Getting rid of the armor too is both more unwise and unnecessary.
original Mulan: you can be whatever you want to be and even do it your own way new Mulan: you can be whatever you want to be as long as you are born with magic powers if not your only purpose is to be married like her sister
Uh… no that’s not what this movie is trying to say at all, it still has the original message, mulan just has chi because it’s more faithful to the original Chinese legend.
I feel like in animated Mulan, Mulan herself was far better and more awesome than this Mulan. In the animated movie she was likeable, respected for her great intelligence, uniqueness, and her compassion and love for her family and friends. This Mulan seems self-centered and like she was just given the movie luck that they're always given.

@@christiancolon8748 What?
@@VladDascaliuc yeah they wanted to do something more serious that's why they got rid of mushu, crikey and those three guys
It wasn't for the realism. It was because they thought it was insensitive after the "Me Too" movement to portray a relationship between a woman and her superior (which is something pretty realistic).
@@mariohotelbestgame1050 oh yes because realism was their top priority this can be seen by the dudes running up walls and the witch lady that can turn into a hawk
"Khan has our army focused on the silk road..." Nitpicking but still a sin: The silk road was a network of trade relationships and routes between the east and the west. In this movie they keep using the term like it was one ancient highway.
Depending on the country, in some areas, it was just a single road/route. But where she is at...yea it would have been a network. It usually went to a single road in the vast dessert area, and in a small section in the middle east where it would pass through the Constantinople area.
Fushigi Yuugi got it right. What's Disney's excuse?
Oh yay, actual historical facts, diggin' it!

Just further proof Disney'll dig up a beloved classic and defile it just to make a $5
The fact that Mushu and Li Shang are not here, and that the actress of Mulan supports Hong Kong police brutality and finally that a big part of the movie was filmed in Xinjiang, precisely near Uyghurs concentration camps deserve way more sins than that ! Great video though.
You see unfortunately China funds pretty much everything you enjoy, and funds almost every company in NA. And movies. I don’t support anything they do, but people are kind of stuck. Although yes Disney could have filmed somewhere else but do they care? No they are the biggest monopoly in the world lol
An actress' political affiliation should not warrant sins for the movie. Sure, I can understand why you might boycott paying to see the movie so you can choose not to support it (which you are still doing indirectly by viewing this video anyway, albeit arguably much less) but that isn't a reason to criticise the film. I realise that cinemasins aren't professional critics and we get sins like "x hot girl is not my girlfriend in this scene" but you are not cinemasins.

Making a movie on the backs of a culture suffering from genocide is the only sin you need to put up. Free the Uyghurs!
I love this channel for one major reason. They seem to legitimatley care about their viewers well being.
The two hares are from the original poem. They’re supposed to be a metaphor for how, when seeing them both hopping, you can’t make the distinction between their genders. It’s a beautiful way of representing equality. The fact that the movie puts it like an easter egg and yada yadas them is a *sin*
And not only did they breezed through it like it was nothing special, they put it NEAR THE BEGINNING! What made that part of the poem so good was this it was Mulan's last line after she reveals to her army brothers, when they visited her home after the war, that she was a woman the entire time. THAT'S what makes it such a good line!
What's the name of the original poem?
@@metalliccheese2967 Ballad of Mulan
@@metalliccheese2967 In the original, she both did have some experience in fighting AND was known to be clever. She was never caught as a woman. Her brother at arms just found out when they visited her home AFTER the war. Which lead to her talking about the two Hares. Other adaptations mention she has a sister and a younger brother(that's why may be why she had a dog name little brother in the original Disney film) who was too young to join the war. One where she became a general and almost was married off someone's daughter- which would have been a funny parallel to the match maker scene. (they just became friends after the reveal) And the darkest one where the emperor decided to make her one of his concubines, and she decided to commit suicide. As far as I know none of the adaptations mentioned chi/Ki, witches(because they had sorceress, whom they actually respect), or spiritual guardians like a dragon or Phoenix. So a story solely on a girl leaving home and the high expectations of a woman to learn the high expectations of a man. Then bonding with the men, becoming army brothers, with no one becoming a romantic interest- as far as I know. All to protect her family, while saving china in the process- And NEVER getting caught during the war, was what I- someone who knew a bit of the ballad, expected Disney to do.
